Beautifully written but disappointing narration

The narrator's accent was grating and distracting. Once you get past the accent the story is beautifully told though. Wonderfully descriptive text.

Amazing book, modern day shakespear...

Would you consider the audio edition of The Bricks That Built the Houses to be better than the print version?

Yes - Kate's reading is part of the lyrical mastery of this production. Her delivery and character portrayal are just outstanding.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Pete's birthday at the pub, becasue it is the perfect climax to the setup.

So many moments that moved me! Her character portraits are mu favourite thing about her writing.

I honestly think that listening to Kate Tempest is like what it must have been listening to Shakespear at the time - her word economy, and detailed picture painting is phenomenal. This is an unpredictable and exciting first novel which I inhaled as it was so good.

Stunning

The Bricks that Built the Houses is amazing. I loved everything about it. I loved the setting, modern-day London. Tempest breathes life into the city and I could practically hear, smell and taste it. I loved the characters as well. They are all wonderfully formed, made of flesh and bone. I loved them all and wanted everything to work out for them. The plot is great as well, gritty and compelling. I really like Tempests prose style.

A good and all to believable story

An all to real story.wonderfully well written and made more real for having been written by a Catholic who almost became a priest. It also made a great audio book beautifully read by Humphrey Bower a great favourite of mine.

Disappointing!

I've tried for months to get into this book without success. It goes on and on and takes forever to get anywhere...and the narrator is rather depressing. I am going to return it.

Excellent.

The audio is well produced, the narration amazing, the writing just defines the term 'excellent'.

The Devil and Webster

If you like the academic world and the complexity of scholarly, political, historical, and social dynamics, this is a great read! The narrator is supremely accomplished in her use of inflection as it informs the reader of the lead character's (the Webster College president) varying perspectives. Full of range and nuance. My only criticism of the story is the too-easily-passed-over reality of tenure decision confidentiality which, if fully highlighted by the college president, would have calmed the waters. Yet this flaw in plotting enables the unfolding of a dramatic story of campus life that would otherwise not have been told.

Identity politics can poison an open mind.

This book is an excellent illustration of when the beauty and necessity of youthful idealism is corrupted by charismatic self promoters. The story of a college president struggling with the illogical means of modern protest while simultaneously coming to terms with the fact that she is not one of them.

Identity politics runs amok on today's campuses. The devil and Webster is a perfect synopsis of the negative impact it can have on today's youth.

Dark Desires, Dark Story

This Book 2 from the Dark Desires series is extremely DARK. It is a long story, but I couldn't stop from listening to it. It certainly kept my attention, even though there didn't seem to be a lot of characters involved. The author did an excellent job of portraying the characters, especially Axel's family. I had to listen carefully to get the background of Axel's family. The Darkness in Axel's heart can be understood. However, the "punishment" seemed a little strange to me. The two narrators did an excellent job with the characters. Even when each, male and female, were required to speak like the opposite sex, they did a great job. This book is a "Standalone". You don't have to have read Book 1. Looking for more books by this author.

I have to say I liked the book but I just got tired of it dragging along. I know that sounds contradictory as it did keep my interest but it did drag in a few areas...a lot. I also think I just wanted to lead character Lea to be a stronger person. That got very frustrating for me to listen to. I also wasn't crazy about the ending. I did hear it out and some parts I really enjoyed but I had a hard time rating it extremely high in stars.

The Old but not Dead Club

I'm not sure what to make of this translation of a huge bestseller in Holland with its anonymous author. The whole is a one year-long Diary-Blog written by Hendrik Groen, a resident in a care home in Amsterdam. Whoever the author really is, he has intimate inside knowledge of such a place.

Hendrik's blog tells us like it is - the oldest resident is 'senile as a goldfish'; dementia patients are 'trussed up like escape artists who have forgotten how to escape'. There's no shying away from the minutiae of humiliations suffered by these 'ramshackle bodies'; the nasty undercurrent of bullying between residents, or the endless groaning and complaining. This all makes it sound awful to listen to, and in some ways it is a profoundly distressing and hideous scenario of what may await us. BUT it is saved by Hendrik's spirit. As he says, it's 'sad, grim and funny' in the care home, and friendships forged there are his saviour.

Hendrik is witty, acerbic without being cruel, and switched on to his country's politics of care for the aged as well as the world. He organises outings for those able enough to join his Old but Not Dead Club; he loves his mobility scooter, and gives and receives kindness and consolation. The more Hendrik reveals about himself, the more we respect and admire him as he keeps his private tragedies to himself. He is tolerant and positive, enjoying smartening up for his Christmas dinner, and making comments which are heart-breaking and funny at the same time, 'Old people, like children, are always losing things, but no longer have a mother to tell them where to look'. He makes jokes at his own expense as when he reels at the cost of a haircut which soon will be 1 euro per hair the rate his hair loss is going.

The winning element is Derek Jacobi's narration which makes the whole a dramatic monologue creating Hendrik as a complete person with a full supporting cast. Jacobi himself is 78 - a younger narrator could not have done it.

This is certainly a one-off. It will move you to tears and laughter, but, dominated as it is by Hendrik's humour, courageous spirit, respect for old people, and sense of the absurd, it is ultimately a listening experience not to be missed.

Absolutely Marvellous

Having lost two close and very elderly relatives in residential care in the past few years I recognise everything in this diary! It has been written so perceptively and with such a light touch that over its duration I experienced the entire range of emotions. Knowing that if I live long enough I could be looking at my own future made the whole thing even more poignant.

Needs editing at transitions, but highly relatable characters.

The editing could use a little work, but this entire family saga is complex and an interesting read. My biggest complaint is that when they go from one character to the next within the same chapter, there is no separation. All of the "Texas" series has interesting characters that have very believable family dynamics. However, I will be reading along about Maggie and all of a sudden the story changes to Riley in the next paragraph without any transitions. I find myself starting over and then realizing the editor did it again. If the editor had separated, as so many do, with a simple 5 star line, or a swoosh between transitions it would be much easier to follow the change of characters.

I will say that this is not a fast read. The books are long and the story bogs down from time to time, but the characters are so engaging, I want to find out what happens next. Again, I am blaming the editor, because I have not had this experience with other Fern Michaels books, which are usually very fast paced.

Great story, but very, very depressing.

This was a very compelling story, but with a very deep and sad dark side to it. There is a good message behind it though, and that's...Be careful what you wish for, because it may everything you thought it would be. While being rich might be nice, it also usually comes with it's own set of problems. And yet; even though this book was so dark and sad...I just couldn't stop reading it for some reason.

I kept waiting for Billie to grow up get a backbone and then leave those three scheeming idiots behind, but that wasn't to be. Well it was, but it was a little too late. I just couldn't understand why someone would stay like she did, especially after they had all proved time after time that they couldn't be trusted. And how could Thad ( A man who had professed to love her since the first day they laid eyes on each other) stand by and do nothing? I know he was Moss's friend, but when you love someone....aren't you supposed to try to protect them from heartbreak? I wanted to slap her mother and Moss so many times for playing the power game that cost Billie big time. And Seth? He was the worst of them all. No one should have that much power over so many peoples lives.

And even though this book pulled me in and wouldn't let go.....I don't think I'll be reading the next few books, because this one really depressed me to no end. I read for entertainment and enjoyment, and this one was way too depressing for my tastes.

A lyrical tale of the Alaskan wilderness

A wonderful tale, a mysterious, exciting boy's own style adventure of exploration through the Alaskan wilderness, and a moving love story at the same time. I listened to this straight after The Snow Child; and it is very different; the story here being told by letters, diaries, reports,and newspaper clippings, in such a clever way that you might think these characters actually existed. The narration seemed a little slow and stolid after The Snow Child; but again this book required a different performance and I soon got used to it after a chapter or two, and before long found it very affecting- particularly in showing the relationship that developed between the men on the journey.

The more mystical events I found fascinating, and if anything, more believable and unnerving than the more fairytale 'magic' of The Snow Child, particularly the character of the shaman who 'flies on black wings'.

My only complaint is with Audible, the Audible sample is very short, and not really representative of the book, and might put potential listeners off; and I understand that the print book contains maps, photographs and drawings. Is there no way that these could be made available to enhance our listening?I listened to this so quickly I have run out of credits! This was a great book, and I am very sad that it is over.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character, Sophie Forrester. She is possibly not the most plausible character considering when this book is set but the isolation and wildness of the setting allows her to be a fully developed, multi-dimensional character. She is an original creation and I liked her very much.

Well written book and summary

I was pleasantly surprised by the way this Insta read drew me in! I didn't think I would easily follow the story line, characters and their interactions but the author of the instaread wrote it so well! I gave this a five star because it was simple to follow, short, descriptive enough that I felt like I was reading the book, and intriguing. It kept me on the edge of my toes, which is how I would expect the full version to be. I recommend this book to anyone! I was given this instaread in exchange for my honest and unbiased review!

The past-ridden present

The more I read into this summary, the more intrigued I am about reading the book titled "LaRose" written by Louise Erdrich. For one thing, even though the summary is good, it uses language such as "may or may not," which makes me wonder about some parts of the story as it is summarized in this book. One of the most sensitive parts of the story, for example, which determines how a character should be judged by readers, is whether Peter assaults his wife Nola sexually after their son Dusty dies. The summary is ambiguous about it, which makes me think either the author Louise Erdrich is also ambiguous about it in her book or the summary can be written more clearly. The Author's Style section of the summary alludes to the former reason, referring to the author's use of language and poetic proses. These ambiguities in combination with knowing that ghosts are used as symbols in the book make it a very interesting read. However, the summary does its job of warning the readers of dark themes such as murder, racism, psychotic murderous mindsets of some characters, suicide, adultery, drugs and sexual violence. It's up to other readers to decide if a happy ending to the story is good enough to consider reading it.
