    Title: Baker's End: Gobbleknoll Hall
    Author: Paul Magrs
Narrator: Tom Baker, Katy Manning, Diane Morgan, Susan Jameson, Stephen Critchlow, David Benson
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 1 hr and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-31-17
    Publisher: Bafflegab Productions
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Baker's End: Gobbleknoll Hall brings together Tom Baker, former Doctor Who companion Katy Manning, and comedienne Diane Morgan (Philomena Cunk from Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe) for a tale of television ghost hunters, dead glam-rock stars and goblins.
Ghost-hunting TV show Manifest Yourself is filming an overnight vigil in the infamous Gobbleknoll Hall, deep in the murksome woods somewhat near the village of Happenstance! When Mrs Frimbly gets wind of these swervish developments, she is terribly excited: she's a huge fan of the show.
But the spirits of Gobbleknoll Hall are not to be messed about with, as the King of Cats knows all too well! Why is the crepusular mansion haunted by the jangling of ancient glam-rock anthems? What is the secret of the phantom boozer in the basement? And what the fudgeknocking blazes is Mrs Frimbly playing at?
    Critic Reviews:
"As totally insane as its predecessor...this second Baker's End adventure is a delight from start to finish." (9/10, Sci-Fi Bulletin)
"Paul Magrs has done it again! This time writing a sequel to the BBC Audio Drama Award nominated Baker's End: The King of Cats that's not only is as good as the first but surpasses it!.... The kooky fun really shines through with the endless wordplay and the shades of the absurd and the macabre. When the cast is having a good time, it really shows through the finished product." (We Are Cult)
"In truth, there is nothing else out there, and nothing else quite as "out there" as Baker's End. It manages to be hilarious and heart-warming, as well as manic and melancholy too and if you enjoyed The King of Cats, then Gobbleknoll Hall is surely a must have." (5/5, Cultbox)

Bafflegab have produced some of the very best audio dramas (The Scarifyers) and once again they have teamed up with writer Paul Magrs (The Brenda and Effie Mysteries) for Bakers End.
The story starts when Suzy Goshawk (narrator + played by Katy Manning) travels to Happenstance for Tom Bakers funeral (played by himself), but not all as it seems.
Some stories are predictable, this is not. Its bonkers and a highly enjoyable listen.
Episode 01 - King of Cats
    Episode 02 - Gobbleknoll Hall
    Episode 03 - Tatty Bogle
Only three episodes have been produced so far, but I do hope the saga of Bakers End continues..

    Publisher's Summary:
Former Doctor Who star Tom Baker stars as himself, Tom Baker, in a series of bedazzling audio adventures from the pen of Paul Magrs (Doctor Who, The Brenda and Effie Mysteries): Baker's End.
Peevish actors are descending mournfully upon the remote English village of Happenstance for the funeral of TV legend Tom Baker. His one-time costar Suzy Goshawk is sucked into a parochial vortex of intrigue involving the quailsome local vicar, Tom's acidulous housekeeper Mrs Frimbly and various other fruminous scumblebums. None of them can agree upon how Tom met his disastrous end, and Suzy is starting to suspect that something murksome and swervish is going on.
The snow comes down, and Suzy finds herself trapped at Baker's End for Christmas, with all the village's creepy pensioners enslaved by a strange, dancing dragon...and a Sinister Presence lurking on the sidelines.
Why are old ladies twerking their bottoms outside the post office-cum-mini-mart? Why is the vicar creeping about in the bushes in the dead of night? And why, just when all looks hopeless, does a strange, scobberlotching creature spring into view? Who exactly is the King of Cats in his furry costume and his battered golden crown?
    Critic Reviews:
"A bizarre, off-kilter story suffused with the feeling that almost anything might happen.... Baker is in full flow here, playing an amped-up version of himself, much in the same way that Matt Le Blanc does on Episodes.... this shaggy cat story is probably the oddest thing you will hear all year. It may well be the funniest too!" (Cultbox)
"Beautifully bizarre and laugh-out-loud funny, writer Paul Magrs wonderfully baroque dialogue suggests the star himself may have had some input.... A riotous, fantastical, absurdist romp then.... 82-year-old Tom has never sounded more at home than in Baker's End." (Edinburgh Evening News)
"Giggle-inducingly joyous listening.... Top wordsmithery on the part of the lovely Mister Magrs, beautifully realised by the cast and crew.... Highly recommended listening, if you like the clever, the silly, and the downright delightfully batty." (We Are Cult)

Well done, Paul Magrs! Delightfully excentric!
I love Tom Baker, and these stories are an absolute delight! Thank you for the blazing wit and humor, getting me off to a wonderful start before work! I can tell these will be favorites for years to come. All hail the King of Cats!
    Hilariously funny!
If you are after something incredibly silly, that will have you in stitches then The King Of Cats is perfect!!
I can honestly say that I have not laughed like that since my mid teens (& I'm nearly 40 now) yep funny things have coaxed a smile out of me, but real belly aching laughter, not a bit of it!
    This though, was hilarious!
What a shame that there are only 3 of them...
    Well worth the money!
Will definitely be buying the other two (just wish there were more)!..
    Baker At His Best
Excellent performances all round but Tom is allowed free reign to be himself in a crazy adventure in which he always seems at home.

It's raining blood on the village of Happenstance.
As the end of summer beckons, the local folk are planning the festival of Tatty Bogle. Hideous scarecrows are appearing all over the place, and almost everyone is behaving as if they're fudgeknocking bananas. Retired TV star Tom Baker is in the garden making friends with cabbages (especially Eric), and Mrs Frimbly is up to curious, malinky deeds of her own.
Before the festival is over there'll be ritual sacrifice, a nasty homunculus and an almighty ruckus in the front parlour. But that's not all. Tom has had a word with the Ferryman, and it's all aboard the ferryboat as it glides through the kinching morts of midnight....
We're all going to hell. And it looks a lot like Middlesbrough.
Baker's End: Tatty Bogle is the third episode of the critically acclaimed audio series starring ex-Timelord Tom Baker as himself, alongside former Doctor Who companion Katy Manning and Susan Jameson, who played opposite Tom in the AudioGo Doctor Who audio series.

    Brilliant
Have listened to the whole Bakers End series and can only hope there will be more as they are riotous and totally nuts. I can't recommend these playlets - as that is what they are, enough. For light-hearted enjoyment and a mind-boggling vocabulary you'll want to try out yourself they are outstanding.

In the aftermath of a major hurricane, a massive antique crate washes up on the shore of Raadsel Point. It's smuggled cargo from the wreck of the Edmund Wood, an unregistered transport returning from a very unusual expedition...a ship that went down in the deepest and most dangerous part of the Hudson known as The World's End. The nightmare creature it contains is about to unleash havoc on the citizens of the sleepy river village of Wyvern Falls and inadvertently draw to it a predator thought extinct a millennium ago. It will come down to two people to figure out what both these creatures are and how to stop them: expat CID Detective John Easton and American Indian anthropologist Sarah Ramhorne. The two of them will have to unravel local Indian myths, outmaneuver a corrupt mayor, a failing TV show and an overzealous Green Folk Festival if they are to stand any chance of saving the day.

    boring
Did not like this book took for ever to get to the plot was boring
    Suspend All Disbelief
What did you like best about Nightmare from World's End? What did you like least?
Clichés abound, sometimes in pairs. On occasion they don't even relate. It feels like the author was trying to reach a targeted word count. It's very distracting.
For instance on of the characters looks forward to a "tall, cool, cold one" in the bar. Really?
Would you recommend Nightmare from World's End to your friends? Why or why not?
No, I found myself at several points how close I was to the end of this book.
Which character as performed by Doug Greene was your favorite?
The narrator did a good job with challenging writing. There really isn't an opportunity for character development by the narrator due to the writing.
Did Nightmare from World's End inspire you to do anything?
I was inspired to avoid further encounters from the author.
    Any additional comments?
So much potential handled so poorly. Overly verbose and heavily clichéd writing competes with unbelievable situations to stretch and eventually snap my very flexible level of credibility. There is a lot of character description that doesn't add to the story and feels needlessly over done.
The author takes just about every creature feature plot and kneads them into some pretty heavy and stodgy dough. Then half bakes the whole mess.
Yes, you do get a two-fer on monsters, but even that deal can't salvage this effort.
On a positive note, it is good to know you can kill a giant squid with a Bowie knife that belongs to someone else that just happens to be on your belt.

One day she stalks a rather tasty-looking murderer and things get messy. Very messy. Amber, the hunter, becomes the hunted.

New spin on old vampire mythology .
    Any additional comments?
This is an enjoyable listen. There are new and varied elements to the vampire mythology . I really like the character of Amber and it was fun to follow her struggles as the story progressed. All of the secrets that we find out about made the story more enjoyable. I am looking forward to the next installment.I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. This review is my honest opinion.
3.5* - narration detracts from audiobook
    Any additional comments?
This is my first experience with this author and I was pleasantly surprised. There were only two instances of the book where the heroine behaved in a way that didn't fit with my mental image of her character (in a class and in Iceland). But otherwise, I found her to be a very appealing protagonist. The writing was witty and the characters were all likeable. For the first book in the series, the book ended at a good transition point.
Now it's time to get on my soapbox about narration. I've been teaching female grad students at a post-secondary education institution for years, and I've never had a student who sounded like Amber. I was once a grad student in my early/mid '20s (many years ago) and I never came across anyone in my class who sounded like that either. The narrator voiced a teenager character, someone you might find in a high school drama class. I don't mean to hammer on the narrator, but if this is her range and her vocal style, then I think a better fit for her would be narrating stories intended for younger audiences. She's certainly enthusiastic, that's for sure!
So, because I didn't find the narration compelling and I did find the story compelling, I set my playback speed to 2x so I could find out what happened in the story. I wouldn't have finished the audiobook if I played it at regular speed. I'd definitely, definitely read the next story in this series. I definitely would not listen to the next story in this series with this narrator; in my opinion, she's a good children's book narrator, but she's not Amber Fang.
I provided my opinion in exchange for a complimentary copy of the audiobook from the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Amber Fang
Given the tag line Librarian Assassin Vampire I couldn't resist.

    Some Good Horror Fun
    Any additional comments?
If this isn't a cautionary tale for the old adage "be careful what you wish for" then I don't know what is! "Horror Story Volume I: Death Wish" is a different kind of short form horror that left me wanting more. One thing I really appreciated about this story is that once the "horror" part of it was established, I thought I guessed what the twist would be and I so often (disappointingly) guess correctly. I was completely wrong about this one and I'm so glad! It's lovely to be surprised and G.M. Hague does a great job of this. This was a tight, well written, spooky, fun short horror book that I would recommend to any and all horror lovers!
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Sometimes they come back
Would you consider the audio edition of Horror Story, Volume I to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version so I can't comment on this point; however the book was well narrated by the author.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that the story was somewhat relatable and despite the obvious supernatural theme it felt really grounded and not utterly far fetched like other horror novels can tend to be; that's important in a good horror story and I think G. M. Hague had this aspect of the book perfectly balanced and the characters were fairly believable in their actions. The circumstances at least at the beginning happened to a very ordinary couple to could have been any friend or family member.
Would you listen to another book narrated by G.M. Hague?
Yes definitely; I plan to listen to and review the other 2 books currently available in this series.
If you could take any character from Horror Story, Volume I out to dinner, who would it be and why?
I don't think you'd especially want to take ANY of the characters in this story out to dinner! They all had nasty sides to them that wouldn't make for particulary pleasent company.
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this book. It was essentially a "long" short story, not quite a novella either. A quick satisfying listen. I hadn't read anything from the author before and was pleasently surprised. I am looking forward to listening the other horror shorts he has written in this series now.
    careful what you wish for...
This was an original story about what happens when you wish for something just for the sake of wishing. A grieving wife wishes her husband would come back from the dead. Little does she know, that something is listening and grants her wish. She now must learn how to play this game to get her husband to move on to his final resting place.

    A Scary Enough Ghost Story
A present day Ghost Story bouncing to the historical desolate Yorkshire Moors tying together an entertaining fun read
    Loved this book
I absolutely loved this book. It had me gripped right from the start. I loved how the 2 time lines run alongside each other. The history the story and the characters had me hooked. This is definitely worth a listen.
WOW Truly haunting I was gripped by every syllable
I love this book!!! The Haunting of Thores-Cross is a superb listen that is both creepy and gripping in equal parts!
Karen Perkins' writing is excellent. Her plot cleverly follows two separate time periods and stories, each chapter subtly revealing more and more of both, which become increasingly interwoven, leaving you desperate and terrified to hear the next.... I think I'll I'll be hearing 'The Bells' in the dark of the night for a while!!!
The characters are both engaging and realistic, and I was swept away by their respective struggles and journeys. With a strong connection to Yorkshire I found the descriptions of the both the locations and actions of the characters to be very believable.
Without revealing the plot the plight of Jennet leaves you empathising for this complex protagonist, you cannot help rooting for her, as well as being frightened at the same time.
The narrator Fleur Edwards is excellent, providing a perfectly delivered read.

    Awesome
Note: Same review as I've written for Book 1
Iâve read Book 0 and Book one in December of 2016. I knew that Book 0 would be a cliff-hanger just because it was labeled Book 0. I followed with Book 1â.still a cliffhanger. I just recently re-read both 0 and 1 and I had to finish the series. I ordered Book 2.
I am not fond of the way authors try and hook a person in using cliff-hangers. I do not order additional books. I donât think itâs fair, though I can understand their thoughts behind it. It would be more honest to say something like, âThis is a free taste of my seriesâ However, and this is a big however, The Haunting of Bechdel Mansion was well worth it.
All three books are well-written, exciting, a lot of twists and turns. I would not have put down Book 2, except I was too tired to read, through the night (a little spooked even). In the morning I finished. Wow. I loved The Haunting of Bechdel Mansion.
    good fast paced story
good fast paced story. just understand that every time it gets to an exciting part in the story, the book section will end and you have to purchase the next one. Go ahead and purchase them all at the beginning so there are no hold ups when you begin reading.
    Excellent
The horror genre is outside my normal reading; however, I thoroughly enjoyed the set. The story was intriguing. However, I do feel that the author left me hanging toward the end almost as if he just got tired of writing. It helps to read the set starting with book 0, but I think this book could've stood on its own.
    Spellbinding
After reading the first book you were hoping that there would be another book and there was. After reading the 2nd book you just knew there was as third book. Mr. Hayden did a great job in the writing of these books. The way he wrapped it up at the end of book 3 brought everything together. Great reading
I will still recommend this book
Cliffhangers, to me, should end one story but leave you with a new one to want to follow. Even though this was a very exciting story, it should have been all in one book. But since I didn't have to pay much for it, I will still recommend this book. I laterally read all three books in one sitting. All are short and there is a good deal of recapping so it was fast reading.

    HUGE RIP OFF
I BOUGHT THIS, BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE AUTHORS. I WONDERED HOW THEY WERE GONG TO GET 19 TALES IN 4 AND A HALF HOURS. THE PLAIN FACT IS YOU ONLY GET 6 STORIES, UNLESS YOU COUNT THE STORY THAT STARTED, BUT FINISHED WITH A TOTALLY DIFFERENT STORY. KOONTZ HAS ONE REALLY LONG STORY, WHICH IS NOT BAD, GORMAN HAS A GREAT STORY, LAYMAN HAS A GOOD STORY, LANSDALE CO-WRITES A STORY WITH A NOBODY THAT HAD GREAT POTENTIAL, BUT JUST WASN'T PUT TOGETHER WITH ENOUGH COHESION. HOCH AND MCCAMMON KIND OF HALF A@@ IT. JANESHUTZ STARTS A STORY THAT WAS INTERESTING, BUT THE ENDING HAD SOME OTHER STORY SPLICED INTO IT.
    STAY AWAY.
NARRATORS WERE GREAT, EXCEPT THE ONE FOR KOONTZ. I REALLY WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE HEARD THE WHOLE BOOK.
    Mediocre Collection at Best
A couple of gems from known authors but overall not worth the price. Also a glitch in the production gave me the first half of one story and conclusion to another part way through.
    Not 19 stories.
Well, it's not all 19 stories first off.
I liked some of the stories that were there. But it's not as advertised.
this is 19 stories? I want my money back
not 19 stories. I want my money back. or I want the remaining chapters please
    Interesting collection of short thrillers
I love short stories, it's a medium that's given me a lot of joy over the years - this is a bit of a mixed bunch though really. Dean Koontz's contribution, which accounts for nearly half the length of the audiobook and is more of a novella than a short story, is pretty typical of his other work - experiments gone wrong, shadowy conspiracies and almost unbearably wholesome families in crisis. If you haven't read his other stuff, you may like it - if you have, you'll probably find it's more of the same. Of the other stories, Ed Gorman's Stalker stands out my personal favourite - unfortunately I didn't find the others particularly inspiring, I may give it another go and see if that helps.
The performance is very good - a mix of actors and actresses give each story an individual flavour, and no story is in anyway hindered by poor narration.
If you looking at this audiobook, are intrigued by the blurb and recognise some of the contributors, and have a credit to spare, it's definitely worth a listen.
