Great read by the horror and supernatural master!
Great Stephen King novel. Sometimes predictable but enough suspense and twists to keep you listening. I've been a King fan since I picked up my first, and this did not disappoint. Really enjoyed listening to it narrated by the author himself as it seems to add another aspect to the book. You really get the impression that the author has enjoyed reading his work as much as writing it.
    Just a gentle road trip!!?
What a fantastic tale. The interwoven spiritual theme intertwined with the violence that unfolds is absolutely brilliant. It makes you shudder but unable to resist the next passage.
    God is cruel.
This was the second time I tried to read this book, the first time I found it to violent and relentless in its gore and suffering; it still is but compared to the news we read every day it has lost some of the horror and that is a very sad reflection on our times.
The plot is a kind of revelation come commentary on environmental issues and racist abuse, but do not worry it just plows all that under a ton of bodies and blood , the characters are well drawn and the evil ones are also well described and put to some horrific use, this is the period where King was talking a lot about alcoholism and probably confronting his mortality, lots of references to middle age aches and pains, also his confusing religious expositions, still a very Christian mix of ideas ( unlike in his last books where god is closer to a god from the Necronomicon).
I can not describe it as fun but it certainly kept me interested and worried for the people in the story.
    Z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z
Usually love Stephen King novels, this one was a snooze feature. Narration added nothing to experience.
    gripping tale
intriguing story of an epic struggle between good and evil..... the familiar foundation of many a good yarn. Very enjoyable listen.

Title: North Carolina Ghosts and Legends
    Author: Nancy Roberts
    Narrator: Fleet Cooper
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-27-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
This collection of tales was originally published as An Illustrated Guide to Ghosts and Mysterious Occurrences in the Old North State. To her group of classic stories, Mrs. Roberts has added three new tales about the Carolina coastal areas. The mountains, Piedmont, Eastern Carolina, and the Outer Banks all provide settings for the unique and haunting accounts found in this book. Six of the stories take place in the Outer Banks - a particularly inspiring location and the perfect place to meet the ghost on Blackbeard's last voyage.
    Critic Reviews:
"Fleet Cooper's spirited performance brings out the history and hauntings of the Carolinas. Cooper's narration is unhurried as he paints the variety of settings in these 19 stories. His assortment of animated voices and accents invokes the myriad characters, who include distressed sailors, Southern ladies, and a menacing pirate who rolls his 'r's with a gruff growl. Cooper's storytelling adds drama to the suspense while his thoughtful presentation of backstory augments the eerie atmosphere of each tale. Though spookiness abounds, there's no gore, making this a fun listen for children as well as adults." (AudioFile magazine)

    Good, Not Great
Nancy Roberts is a great storyteller, usually putting the reader into the story through the eyes of its participants. While her normal eye for detail is there, I found many of the stories to be a bit below her usual standard. Granted, her classic "Ghosts of the Carolinas" is a tough act to follow, but I'd still have to recommend that book over this one.
    I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book. Each chapter is just a few pages, perfect for dipping in for a moment or so. Some tales I had heard, but others were totally new to me.
    Contents:
The Ghost Comes for Blackbeard, Ocracoke
    The General's Ghost, For Fisher
    The Whaler's Return, Shackleford Banks
The Unearthly Music of Roan Mountain
    Lifesaver of the Outer Banks
The Lovely Apparition, near High Point
Run of the Ghost Train, Warsaw
    The Mysterious Hoofprints at Bath
The Fairy Cross, western North Carolina mountains
Music by the Ghost Organ, Kadesh
    Bummer's End, Smithfield
The Little Red Man, Old Salem
The Thing at the Bridge, Smithfield
    Devil's Tramping Ground, Siler City
The Light at Maco Station, Wilmington
    Dromgoole, Chapel Hill
Ghost of the Old Mine, Gold Hill
The Battle of the Dead, Bentonville
The Ghost on the Stairs, Fayetteville
This book is well worth reading if you like gentle horror or ghost stories. Nothing is too scary and all are well told.
If you enjoy paranormal stories or North Carolina legends and history, then I think you would enjoy this book.
    North Carolina Ghosts & Legends
Enjoy a good ghost story or legend? Then this is the book for you. Especially if you also have an interest in North Carolina. North Carolina Ghosts & Legends, as the title indicates, covers many old ghost stories and legends from the mountains to the coast. Stories include "The Ghost Comes for Blackbeard", "The Unearthly Music of Roan Mountain", "The Mysterious Hoofprints at Bath", "The Little Red Man", "Devil's Tramping Ground" and "The Battle of the Dead".
I found the stories to be very interesting. Nancy Roberts' writing style draws you in and makes you feel like you're there.

Christine was eating into his mind, burrowing into his unconscious. Christine, blood red, fat, and finned, was 20. Her promise lay all in her past. Greedy and big, she was Arnie's obsession, a '58 Plymouth Fury. Broken down but not finished.
There was still power in her - a frightening power that leaked like sump oil, staining and corrupting. A malign power that corroded the mind and turned ownership into possession.

    My favourite
This story has been one of my favourite every since I first saw the movie. The movie is fantastic, the book is amazing and now the audio book is mind blowing. Great job
A wonderful book brought to life
This is one of my favourite King novels and Holter Graham did not disappoint as the narrator. The character's were fully realized and just as I imagined them to be. Very impressed
    never gets stale
I read this book for the first time when I was about sixteen. It was my first Stephen king. I loved it. I've 're read it a few times over the years, and most of Stephen kings other books, and in my opinion it is one of his best. His earlier books had a strong continuity and commitment that I think some of his later books lacked. This is the first time I've listened to Christine as an audio book, the narrator is excellent in every way. His voice has a youth full yet wise tone, he was a perfect choice. His voices were so good especially Arnie who's voice changes, subtlety at first. I'm now much much older than sixteen and this audio book stood the test of time for me
    Totally gripping.
A hard to put down book, tense & brilliant through out. Loved it, no disappointment .
    Christine Review...
If you could sum up Christine in three words, what would they be?
    Sinister,
    Gripping,
    Epic
What other book might you compare Christine to, and why?
The shining, as I loved that book also
What does Holter Graham bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
    Atmosphere
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found it neither, I did find it scary!
    Any additional comments?

    Title: Insomnia
    Author: Stephen King

    Language: English
    Release date: 07-14-16
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
You'll lose a lot of sleep.... Ralph does. At first he starts waking up earlier. And earlier. Then the hallucinations start - the colours, shapes and strange auras. Not to mention the bald doctors who always turn up at the scene of a death.
That's when Ralph begins to lose a lot more than sleep. When he begins to understand why his hitherto mild-mannered friend, Ed, is getting out of control - dangerously so. And why his hometown is about to become the new Armageddon....
    Members Reviews:
Great story and narration. God awful music.
Great story, rivetting. Eli Wallach's voice is a joy to listen to. The only thing was the music, it was terrible and inappropriate. Marred an otherwise excellent read of a great book.
    Too much music
What three words best describe Eli Wallachs voice?
Talented voice artist and very easy to listen to.
    Any additional comments?
There is terrible music all through the performance. I assume it is between chapters. It is distracting, detracts from the performance and ruins it. It is also far too loud for the voice of Eli Wallach to be heard clearly. There should be a warning that there is music introduced to the book.
    brilliant
really gripoing all the way through the kind of book i could listen to again
Great story, great reading - dreadful music
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It's a lengthy and enjoyable reading which in my opinion makes this purchase money well spent
What was one of the most memorable moments of Insomnia?
Sadly the memorable moments are the most frustrating (see comments below).
Which scene did you most enjoy?
When a certain character got his comeuppance.
Could you see Insomnia being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
Definitely, as with a gazillion other Stephen King books. All the actors that spring to mind for Ralph are too old (or dead) - Jimmy Stewart would have been super.
    Any additional comments?
Insomnia is a favourite of mine and I've read it a couple of times. Finding it here and read by Eli Wallach - a 'proper' Hollywood actor of a classic era - made its purchase a no brainer. And it's just as enjoyable to listen to as to read ... except for the incredibly intrusive incidental music that cruelly punctuates the reading at far too frequent and inopportune moments. It's discordant and unnecessarily loud and it's driving me up the wall. And yes, I realise that's the point - the lead character is functioning on increasingly fewer and fewer hours' sleep, the music is no doubt meant to mirror his frazzled nerves - but whoever thought this ear drum-jangling cacophony was a good idea and would compliment the actor's reading - it damn well doesn't!
    Music Spoils the Book
What did you like best about Insomnia? What did you like least?
Music during the chapters drowned the narration and was pointless. A shame.
If youve listened to books by Stephen King before, how does this one compare?
Had to give up because of the music intervention.
What didnt you like about Eli Wallachs performance?
Eli was fab, music drowned him out.
Did Insomnia inspire you to do anything?
Write a petition not to use music on audiobooks.
    Any additional comments?
I hope this is not a new trend, as i will not be buying. Returned.

I like this author and these books.
    Creepy!
LOVED the creep factor in this book! Deborah LeBlanc writes the stuff bad dreams are made of. Gets you hooked in right from the beginning & keeps you there til the story is finished.
    Ugh!
Wow! I wish I Hadn't wasted my time and money on this. I have read LeBlanc's works before and have enjoyed them; but this was over the top, disgusting-wise, and not up to the level I have previously experienced from her.
    Love her short stories!
I just love the creative craziness of Deborah LeBlanc's short stories like this one. I have read a lot of her novels, and they are all pretty good, some better than others. These are just fun and fast for an entertaining evening, and sometimes that is what a person needs!
    Love this!
It was so descriptive, I wanted to put it down, but couldn't. I love her books and highly recommend her.

    Entertaining!
This book was great. It was funny and had a good story line. I loved all the characters and want to know what happens to them. Definitely invested. The plot was a little unexpected and definitely interesting. It is also fantastically British in a very American-accessible way. The narrator was really great. The characters sound exactly how I heard them in my head when I read it in the print version. I am really pleased I spent a credit on this. For a good time pick up Shoot the Dead.
For more Steve Wetherell and other comedic fantasy writers, tune into their podcast, Authors and Dragons. It's hilarious. You're welcome.
    London's Culling!
Don't hold the Clash pun against it, this audio book is awesome! Luke Thompson's narration takes great, and makes it near perfection. I found myself being oddly reminded of Terry Pratchett's "City Watch" books by the whole thing.
Classic East End thugs, Jack and Billie Thatcher vs zombies would not have gone over half so well with me. There's just been too much of that. This is more East End thugs versus voodoo yardies, vampires, zombies, the police, and an ancient demon skull thing. Jack and Billie are villains and no attempt is made to redeem them and their all the more likable for it.
Luke Thompson's narration only really misfires in a few places. Jock's accent seems to fall apart when he leaves comedy Scot to make serious threats. Leon's accent wobbles a bit too. Neither thing really takes away from the story, but it needs mentioning.
This wasn't the first of Steve Wetherell's books I was hoping would make it to Audible, but having read it, I'm even more determined to get the rest as they become available.
A badass bad guy you cant help cheering for
I first encountered Steve Wetherell, (AKA Brandon Thighmaster) through his work on the podcast Authors and Dragons. The premise of the podcast is that several authors of comedic fiction play a game of D&D. I dont listen to podcasts, Ive never played D&D or even met someone who played (at least, no one who admits to it) but I am a fan of Robert Kroese, Drew Hayes, Rick Gualtieri and, especially, Robert Bevan. Wetherell steals the show among these well known authors and, often, is responsible for the biggest laugh of the show.
All of that to say, I had high expectations for this book; I was blown away. While you can see inexperience in Wetherells writing, the compelling story, creative descriptions, unique similes, and a great narrator made this one of my favorite books of the year.
There is a ton of action, violence, and gore in this one that keep the story moving.

    Publisher's Summary:
The year is 1953. Disgraced in the psychiatric hospital where he'd practiced for nearly 30 years, Dr. Walter Freeman has taken to traversing the country and proselyting about a very new kind of salvation: the transorbitol lobotomy. With an ice pick and a hammer, Freeman promises to cure depression and catatonia, delusions and psychosis, with a procedure as simple and safe as curing a toothache.
When he enters the backwater Oklahoma town of Burnwood, however, his own sanity will be tested. Around him swirls a degenerate and delusional cast of characters: a preacher who believes his son to be the Messiah, a demented and violent young prostitute, and a trio of machete-wielding brothers, all weaved into a grotesque narrative that reveals how blind faith in anything can lead to destruction.
    Members Reviews:
If you like your horror fiction dark and hopeless
Doctor Freeman is a pioneer in the field of psychiatric medicine in the early 1950s, unfortunately it is for his work in lobotomizing homicidal patients. The hospital has decided the surgery is too dangerous and asks him to stop his work or leave the hospital. He chooses to leave. Distraught and depressed that his work will be lost to time, he forges out to share his work with the world.
In a parallel story, the town of Burnwood seems to be overcrowded with the evil and the insane. A preacher has declared his son to be the second coming of Christ, insisting that he can cure the ill and ultimately raise the dead. A teenage girl obsessed with her mothers hidden treasure has turned to prostitution and murder until she can get the money and free herself from squalor and humiliation.
The characters collide in a world of insanity and depravity. There are glimmers of hope, but darkness pervades. They are all desperate to feel better about their downward spiraling lives, but continue doing the truly awful with predicable results.
The Incurables is a horror story about depraved people. The only redeemable character seems to be the preachers son, Durango, whose father has mostly destroyed any chance of happiness in his humiliating life.
It is an interesting premise, and generally entertaining, but the story fumbles in its believability. A doctor who can perform thousands of lobotomies on willing participants is a stretch at best. Everyone in the story is either purely evil or utterly heartless, giving them a two-dimensional feel.
Richard Rieman performs the story well. His voice is pleasant and his characters well defined. There is a folksy quality to his reading that lends well with the mid-20th Century setting. A good performance overall.
If you like your horror fiction dark and hopeless, this may be a good listen. There is an otherworldly feel to the story, that maybe someone will be saved by the supernatural. But darkness pervades and evil ultimately has its way.
