Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the critically acclaimed The Mermaids Singing comes a haunting, luminous novel set on an enchanted island off the west coast of Ireland where magic, faith, and superstition pervade the inhabitants' lives and tangled relationships - perfect for fans of Eowyn Ivey, Sarah Waters, and Angela Carter.
May 1959. From one side of St. Brigid's Island, the mountains of Connemara can be glimpsed on the distant mainland; from the other, the Atlantic stretches as far as the eye can see. This remote settlement, without electricity or even a harbor, has scarcely altered since its namesake saint set up a convent of stone huts centuries ago. Those who live there, including sisters Rose and Emer, are hardy and resourceful, dependent on the sea and each other for survival. Despite the island's natural beauty, it is a place that people move away from, not to - until an outspoken American, also named Brigid, arrives to claim her late uncle's cottage.
Brigid has come for more than an inheritance. She's seeking a secret holy well that's rumored to grant miracles. Emer, as scarred and wary as Rose is friendly and beautiful, has good reason to believe in inexplicable powers. Despite her own strange abilities - or perhaps because of them - Emer fears that she won't be able to save her young son, Niall, from a growing threat. Yet Brigid has a gift too, even more remarkable than Emer's. As months pass and Brigid carves out a place on the island and in the sisters' lives, a complicated web of betrayal, fear, and desire culminates in one shocking night that will change the island, and its inhabitants, forever.
Steeped in Irish history and lore, The Stolen Child is a mesmerizing descent into old world beliefs, and a captivating exploration of desire, myth, motherhood, and love in all its forms.

Helen Cadmus was dead - but how had it happened?
Suicide, most people said. She jumped off that millionaire's yacht in a fit of despair, her body was never found, and the case was closed. The story was too neat to suit Perry Mason. It didn't add up. Somebody was concealing the truth about Helen's death, and how was going to uncover it even if it killed him.
That's how Mason fell into a trap set by three killers - two humans and one grinning gorilla!

Early Perry Mason, a gothic tale
This is early Perry Mason. It's a gothic tale set in a mad scientist's gorilla lab in the outskirts of Los Angeles. I'm not making that up. I don't think it ever showed up on the television series. There is a murder, and I'm not giving much away by revealing that Perry Mason, Della Street and Paul Drake are in on the solution. It has a bit of a Sax Roemer flavor, unlike a lot of Gardner's later work, but without the racism and sensationalism. Despite the dark subject matter of homicide and animal experimentation, it's fairly light reading. You won't face complex moral dilemmas or have awful nightmares. You'll just go on and grab the next Perry Mason novel.
A rather fun experience to read
A rather fun experience to read. Of course the ending did catch me, along with other first time readers of this book off guard.
    A unique Perry Mason mystery
This one isn't solved in the court but it is unique Perry Mason just the same. A good read. Worth reading.
    Five Stars
It's very entertaining and intriguing, can't put it down to find out the what the outcome is.
    Three Stars
I'm typically a great fan of the Perry Mason series of books, but this one was just strange.

Holmes and Watson Come to Life
I grew up listening to these books. I remember my mother popping the cassette into the car stereo when I was young and play these stories along with all the Sherlock Holmes stories portrayed so masterfully by Clive Merrison and the late Michael Williams.
For start, you can certainly see an improvement in quality from "A Study in Scarlet" to "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and the "Valley of Fear." The voice acting, which has been lauded by critics, and the engrossing story have brought me back to listen to these again and again.
I highly recommend these for a long car ride or trip. They are entertaining, faithful to the original books, and thoroughly enjoyable.
    Fantastic!
I love these actors. They are perfect in these roles. The play is so tightly woven with the original novels.

And it's up to the legendary legal eagle to unravel the case's most baffling mystery: a buried clock at the murder scene. But as time runs short, the ticking of the clock sounds more and more like the rattling of family skeletons that everyone wants silenced....

WWII is causing wide-spread bloodshed, but on the Home Front murder is a family affair
It's 1943 and a soldier has been sent home on leave to recuperate from his wounds. Unfortunately, things are far from peaceful in the California mountain town. There's a wealthy industrialist and his two daughters and the oldest daughter's shady husband. First, an embezzlement becomes public knowledge, then there's a body, and (nearby) a buried clock set to the wrong time. And (of course) Perry Mason and his faithful, shrewd secretary Della Street are there to sort things out.
This is a peek into American life during the war years. Daylight Savings Time (called "War Time") has been introduced to save precious fuel. Drivers are urged to curtail travel and to drive at "tire conserving speeds." (Perry never does.) There's a tire rationing board and one major clue is the fact that only one of the suspects could have qualified for a new tire. And the street lights are doused to make cities and towns less attractive targets for air raids.
Like most novels written during the war, there's some heavy-handed patriotic propaganda and Gardner puts some speeches suited to a middle-aged writer into the mouths of his young characters. It's jarring, especially since he's normally clever about keeping his characters "in character."
One thing disturbs me. The case is a complicated one, and Perry just can't seem to get a grip on it. He follows several false trails and (although he's convinced of his client's innocence) he's on the ropes when it comes to trial. The D.A.'s office is openly gloating because THIS time Perry Mason doesn't have all of the inside information and THIS time they're going to beat him. In other words, they claim that he wins cases because his detective skill puts knowledge in his hands that would normally be known only by the police and the D.A.'s office.
Isn't "full disclosure" one of the basic principles of our legal system? I believe that both sides are required to disclose all evidence that will presented in the trial. Any surprises are reason to ask for a mistrial (or acquittal.) Was this not so in the mid-1900's?
Anyway, it's a pretty good mystery and the town has as nice a collection of slightly off-beat characters as Gardner ever dreamed up. Watching Perry almost defeated by the hot-shot young Assistant D.A.

Do birds of a feather plot murder together?
The extraordinary Perry Mason never handles straightforward divorce cases, but this one is an especially strange bird. Rita Swaine is dating her sister's ex-boyfriend. Her sister, Rosalind, is married to shady insurance adjuster Walter Prescott, who's got dollar signs in his eyes and ice water in his veins. When Rita's beau gallantly steps in to warn Rosalind about her heinous husband's designs, Prescott hatches a plan to prey on them all...by suing for big profit.
For Mason, this case should be a lark. But when a murdered man is found in the Prescott home - and a nosy neighbor sings an incriminating song about illicit love and a hidden gun - legal eagle Mason suddenly finds himself defending a sitting duck.

Perry Mason seen the way the author created him.
I'm a huge fan of the Perry Mason TV series and have listened to the old radio dramas but the book gives depth to the characters I've not seen before. Perry is quite different from Raymond Burr' s portrayal, a bit more hard boiled at times. The story has all the twists and surprises that Mason is known for. Narrator has some unusual voices for some of the characters, Drake took some getting used too and the female characters were a little awkward but not too distracting.

    Nostalgic fun
I was feeling nostalgic for the old tv show so decided to read this. It was fun to re-experience Perry, Della and Paul together, and the mystery was enjoyable. The book was written in 1939, if I remember correctly, and it was also fun -- even strange -- to travel back to a different time when people called police cars "prowl cars," might say "that's mighty white of you" upon receiving an unexpected favor and thought nothing about lighting up a cigarette (even in a courtroom). The word "cigarette" appears over 40 times in the book!
I read the book in spurts, and I found it a little difficult to follow - there were many characters, some with secrets and fake identities. It was also a little difficult to distinguish between what Perry knew, what he suspected and what he wanted others to think he knew. Perry's work was, as one character described it "a most remarkable piece of detective work, an example of sheer deductive genius."
Too long in getting to the court room.
Wanted a good read, not this one. It was too slow in getting to the real crime. I do give it a +3 out of 5.
    Five Stars
    My mom loves it!
    Great plot which never unravels
Great plot which never unravels. I just wish ESG's dialogues were a bit more believable. His characters all use the same phrasing regardless of age, sex or education level. Otherwise, great!
I am once again reading Perry Mason after a gap ...
I am once again reading Perry Mason after a gap of 40 years and his books are still as engrossing as ever. "Unputdownable!" I had to reluctantly shut it late at night and go to bed.

Fisher College at Cambridge lies between St Johns and Trinity Colleges. Here one morning the bed makers and gyps, clamouring for admission on the last day of term were admitted to find, lying across the path, the body of one of the college porters.
The murder of the porter begins a mystery which deepens when it is found that the unpopular Dean of the college is missing. The search for the murderer is conducted in part by the police and partly by the Vice President of Fisher College Sir Richard Cherrington, an eminent but slightly eccentric archaeologist with a penchant for amateur detection.
    Members Reviews:
    Enjoyable but overlong and repetitive
I was intrigued by the murder mystery in the book but the constant repetition of the clues and suspect statements made it hard to sustain my interest. The case is looked at by three different individuals, an eccentric college don and archaeologist, a local police inspector, and a Scotland Yard man. They spend so much of their time analyzing the same information, both internally and in spoken dialogue, that the story loses momentum and fizzles at the end. The reader sees little of an actual investigation.
I was especially taken aback when mild manner archeologist and Fisher College vice-president, Sir Richard Cherrington, goes off on a long diatribe about human suffering after he unmasks the killer. It was totally out of character.
    Sherlock Would Be Proud
Good old fashioned detective work updated skillfully. A regular "Who Done It" written so smoothly updated that I didn't think of Sherlock until it was over.
    The Cambridge Murders
To many caricatures and to many plots but I made it through to a excellent ending.
Really enjoyed a good, very British murder
The narrator was most excellent. Able to do many voices well. Am looking for other books with same.
    Good Story Very Long Winded
so this was a VERY unnecessarily complicated story. they told and retold the story which I found tedious. otherwise I liked the characters and when they FINALLY got to the end it all seemed so simple.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hollywood's beloved song-and-dance man, Dick Powell, turned gumshoe in this 1945-era detective yarn. At once a tough-talking detective working with police to solve tough murder cases and yet an affable crooner who ended nearly every episode singing to his girlfriend in his rich baritone voice.
Whether murder or music, Dick Powell beguiled radio audiences through 100+ episodes before the show moved to television and the role was eventually taken over by David Janssen, later the star of The Fugitive.
Richard Diamond, Private Detective became the template for many of the private eye shows to follow on both radio and television. Gritty crime stories combined with lighthearted banter and, in this case, a musical number served up a compelling half hour of entertainment each week.
A must-have for fans of detective stories and Dick Powell.

Not as good as book 1
These episodes didn't seem as humorous as the first and the recording wasn't nearly as clean. There was indistinct background talking (a ball game?) throughout many of the recordings and changes in volume and clarity that sounded like the speaker had turned his/her head away from the mike. These were not present in book 1, but I still enjoyed it.

    Another classic hard boiled mystery
If you enjoy Phillip Marlowe, Mike Hammer, Mike Shane, and the other hard boiled detectives you will enjoy the Perry Mason series of mysteries. This is not the Perry Mason you may know from the television series. This Perry Mason is s tough, no hold bared, lawyer/detective. Think Phillip Marlow or Mike Hammer with a law degree and you got the idea.
    Another mystery solved
Excellent story with a great plot and characters. The voice for women is quite distinguish in a strange way. The plot followed well; definitely will continue to listen to the series
    Interesting case for Mason
The writing style is horribly dated. Gardner was big on "telling" and not "showing", something that would never pass an editor today. He also uses phrases repeatedly, and I think Mason hooked his fingers into the armholes of his vest 3 times in the first 3 chapters. The case was a good one, not horribly complicated (but made more so by Mason's clients, who lied a lot). Cendese is growing on me as a narrator. He does amazing voices for men, each totally different. He just can't do women's voices. They all sound like chipmunks on helium. Mason's client, in particular, was bad. When Cendese did her "angry" voice, it was laughable.
    Irritating performance ruins great story
What would have made The Case of the Sulky Girl better?
Nothing. It's great historical reading from the 30's and the plots grip me.
What other book might you compare The Case of the Sulky Girl to and why?
N/A so far - nothing else I've read sounds like Gardner
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Female parts read by Cendeses sounded like all the women were drag queens. Very distracting while trying to enjoy the story. English accent a little over the top.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Case of the Sulky Girl?
None of it needed to be cut. Love what little of the Perry Mason books I've read so far. Just not impressed by them as audio books because you don't have much variety in narrators.
Performance makes Perry a mad monster
The performance of the book makes Perry Mason sound mad and like a cheap gangster instead of the thoughtful attorney portrayed by Raymond Burr.
