    One of the best!
Forget the episode of the TV series, ESG is masterful in creating a wonderful mystery. Be mindful of its being written in a much different time as there are some objectionable references to people of color but remember that ESG did practice civil rights law before turning into an author. With that said, this is truly enjoyable and Alexander Condese is masterful in his narration.
    Missed Raymond Burr!
Hated this because I missed the voices of the TV Raymond Burr and the actors I am used to hearing....Sorry!

    Publisher's Summary:
Who was that masked woman? That was the question plaguing Perry Mason. No one loves a good mystery more than Mason - but being asked to represent a client who is concealing her identity, not to mention the particulars of her case, has given even the legendary legal eagle a case of ruffled feathers. Yet the intriguing cloak-and-dagger tactics have Perry hopelessly hooked. As for the silent siren behind the mask, is she heiress Byrl Gailord or penniless Adelle Hastings? Both women have ties to a man named Tidings, a man who may be a protector or predator. A man who could answer a lot of tough questions - if only he hadn't been murdered.

Trust Fund Babies, Corpses, and Masked Clients
Like many of Gardner's Perry Mason novels, Baited Hook begins with an unusual introduction to a client. In fact, the client is so mysterious that she is covered up and wearing a mask and doesn't even speak to Mason. And to top it off, although a large sum of money is dangled, Mason isn't told what the case is about or what he's expected to do. The case from there gets even more convoluted with Mason getting involved in a questionable stock trade, stumbling on corpses, and stands accused of being a pursesnatcher.
Gardner's Perry Mason stories are mysteries centered around a lawyer not a detective. Although this one is bereft of courtroom scenes, it has plenty of deductions and antics.
Who Has the Other Half of a Ten Thousand Dollar Bill?
Erle Stanley Gardner is prolific, timeless and entertaining. Featuring a supremely confident lawyer whose clients are always innocent, Gardner was the world's best selling author at the time of his death. The title in this one was selected by Perry Mason himself, although Della Street suggested "The Mysterious Mistress" as an alternative. A light, quick read, "Baited Hook" doesn't challenge the intellect, but retains your interest.
    It's Interesting that...
The Perry Mason books, which predated the TV show, almost never made it to trial. Perry solved the crime, the perpetrators got arrested and that was the end of the book. On the TV show, they most always spend the last 15-20 minutes of the show at the trial. Though these books do take liberties that the TV show couldn't. This was a good read.
TV shows very good, this is better
Mason really comes across as a fighter in Gardener,s books. There is enough time devoted to Mason 's character and his philosophy to give the reader an understanding that he is a man driven by some inner force that few possess. Sherlock Holmes would have the same tensions while trying to piece clues together. Give some of the early cases a try, such as Velvet Claws (first Mason), and you may find that you have been caught on a "Baited Hook".
    A new experience...
I've never heard of a coroners inquest, so it added interest. The characters had depth and interesting philosophies, good and bad. Most of all, the facts were all there, to be interpreted by you and Mason.

The case takes many shocking twists and turns before revealing its surprising conclusion.

    another good one
Yes, another good one. More complicated than earlier ones (I'm reading them in order), but Perry is still taking chances to find the truth and protect his client.
    A Gem!
Mason and Della encounter death on their cruise from Hawaii. Beautifully told, with unusual, for ESG, sardonic humor. The romantic angle does not interfere. All in all a masterpiece of invention. If one would like a sample of ESG'S work an excellent choice.
I love Perry Mason and pulp fiction
I love Perry Mason and pulp fiction, so I'm cool with this. Just remember that it IS pulp fiction.
    Great read
    Another favorite book!
    Great plot
Moves through the story line steadily, and the pieces of the puzzle dovetail neatly toward the end. The keen intellect and insights of Perry Mason are fascinating to follow. The TV character pales by comparison. The best way to appreciate the immense talent of Mr. Gardner - read the books!

    Lucky to Get It
Perry Mason solves another one! He knows the law and how to push it as far as he can, bending it to the benefit of his innocent (naturally) client without actually breaking it. He is scrupulous in a just-shy-of-unscrupulous way. Ends justifying the means, perhaps?
Ethical questions notwithstanding, Gardner is ever entertaining. His language is crisp, plots endlessly twisting, and characters deliciously villainous or improbably naive. Forgive him his stereotypes (racial, gender, or whatever) because he was a reflection of his times.
Despite Gardner's frequently sexist portrayals of damsels in distress, one of his strongest and most interesting characters is none other than Della Street. She ran the show but was wise enough to not let on to her single-minded boss who would rattle off a litany of orders, confident she would get them all down on her steno pad, finish them on an impossibly short timeline, and never have a hair out of place. She was his defensive tackle who ran interference for him without ever showing a single ruffled feather. The soul of discretion, she would make the most secure information vault pale in comparison to her secret-keeping abilities. No wonder she remained 'Miss Street' all those years--there way no way she had a life outside that office. But we loved her for it.
These books from Earl Stanley Gardner are kind of a time capsule. You might enjoy references to 'expensive $5.00 ties,' or dropping a nickle into a pay phone. And no matter how dangerous the world seemed to them, it feels nostalgic and safe to visit now.
So if you want a (somewhat predictable) brain teaser, interesting (though somewhat stereotypical) characters, and a hero who is equal parts anti-hero, you'll enjoy these books. Take them for what they are and enjoy!
"Lucky" to have Perry Mason as her attorney
What a wonderful book! Erle Stanley Gardner has done it again with this third installment of the Perry Mason series. This case deals with the murder of a shady promoter of good-looking young women. Young women win a "legs" contest and are promised a Hollywood career and attendant fame. This is, of course, a scam, and the girls are left fame-less and penniless. The promoter, of course, is murdered and Mason represents the girl and man who are the prime suspects. The plotting is intricate; the pace is fast and the end is surprising. Through it all, Mason is calm, deliberative, ingenuous, and brilliant. I highly recommend this book.
    Learning from Erle Stanley Gardner
Slowly reading through the Perry Mason series, I am still in the middle of this one. It is a light escape from the chore of reading about Ptolemeic Egypt as translated from papyrus and the Rosetta Stone.

Read a Page a Day to Improve Your French
My French instructor told us that the French love mysteries. Of course, their own French detectives are popular and they love Agatha Christie. I thought it would be fun to read this mystery in French as it has a single narrator and an interesting plot. I have read it in English at our library mystery book club, so am familiar with enough of the details to make the French a tad easier to translate. I have read that other reviewers read mysteries in French to polish their French and it's a very pleasant way to learn French vocabulary. This might be a fun French class activity for homework to read and translate a page a day, or a few pages each week. I was reading the kindle version and ordered it in paperback.

So much better than the TV series
Why do TV producers think they can make something better by fiddling with it? The stories and characters in these books make perfect reading and listening to. The characters are believable but with plenty of heartache, mystery, crises, humanity rev going on - there was absolutely no need to take anything out of our anything in - sheer arrogance in part of producer. Just enjoy the real thing before TV destroys it totally!
    Gentle and charming
What did you like most about Sidney Chambers and the Dangers of Temptation?
Despite normally having an aversion to any domination of clergy as a character (unless they are the murderer), in this case I let it go, Sydney Chambers is a sweetie.
What did you like best about this story?
They stories are not really 'who done its', but the characters are charming and flawed.
Which character as performed by Peter Wickham was your favourite?
    Sydney Chambers
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    It made me smile.
    Gentle, pastoral, slightly boring

    Publisher's Summary:
In the summer of 1994, a workman at the historic mansion of railroad baron James J. Hill in St. Paul, Minnesota, stumbles on a long-hidden wall safe. When experts arrive to open the safe and examine its contents, they make an astonishing discovery. There, inside, is a handwritten manuscript bearing the signature of John H. Watson, MD. The manuscript contains the story of how Sherlock Holmes and Watson traveled to Minnesota to track a murderous arsonist - known only as the Red Demon - who is threatening both Hill and his Great Northern Railway.
Set against the backdrop of the real, devastating Hinckley forest fire of 1894, Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon is the tense and atmospheric first novel in Larry Millett's classic series of adventures that brought Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to Minnesota.
    Members Reviews:
I have been waiting for this to come to audible .
It's a great story with a lot of historical accuracy . I wish that they had included the footnotes as an appendix because the original books have a great deal of Minnesota history identified in them in such a manner that did not interfere with the story but was available afterwards . That being said is still a wonderful entertaining story I highly recommend it
    Exciting and enticing!
What did you love best about Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon: A Minnesota Mystery?
Sherlock and Watson in America brings a new point of view and the introduction of several wonderful new characters.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon: A Minnesota Mystery?
The scene where Sherlock is nearly lost to the raging fire at the site of one of his rare failures.
What does Steve Hendrickson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He makes the story come alive so that you can almost feel what the characters are experiencing.
    Any additional comments?
This book is a great beginning to a fabulous series of American adventures for Holmes and Watson.
Sherlock investigation; set in America; engaging.
This story begins with an introduction that authenticates the event as a Sherlock Holmes investigation and the journalling as Watsons account. I was fully drawn in and convinced.
Holmes is approached by the executive to James J. Hill, an American railroad baron. The baron seeks to engage the greatest detective, Sherlock. Holmes of course, to find an arsonist who is threatening to burn a major train line in Minnesota. Holmes and Watson travel to America to begin the investigation. Watson chronicles the trip as well as the investigation once they reach the rustic town of Hinckley.
The initial investigator has gone missing so Holmes traces his steps. He interviews the town marshal who appears to be in someones pocket; a woman who owns a bordello just on the edge of town and who is suspect of penning the threatening letters; an obstructive newsman; and an infamous logger who is reminiscent of a pirate. Holmes and Watson face assassin attempts and are rescued by a surprising, backhills character.
The suspects multiply although they are eliminated one by one by Holmes until he uncovers the true demon. He has to race from one town to another, serving as the locomotive coalman/stoker, as he tries to stop the villain.

What made the experience of listening to Arte en la Sange: Una aventura de Sherlock Holmes [Art in the Blood: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure] the most enjoyable?
Thoroughly enjoyed the narrator's Latin American accent--but definitely need to caveat that statement--listening to the narrator portray a character in the book with a french accent was downright unpleasant.

    Publisher's Summary:
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Simon Brett's entertaining crime novel, starring Bill Nighy.
Charles Paris has been 'resting' for quite a while, so he's relieved when he is cast as Ghost of Hamlet's Father and First Gravedigger in a touring production of Hamlet. But rehearsals are a little tense - the lead roles of Hamlet and Ophelia are played by a reality TV contestant and TV talent show winner respectively, and their opinions on celebrity and the theatre differ somewhat from those of the more experienced members of the cast.
The show is barely on the road before tragedy strikes - just before opening night, part of the set collapses, seriously injuring one of the actors. Then another member of the cast is found dead. It's up to Charles Paris to turn detective and investigate the mystery, but with almost everyone having a motive for murder, will he ever track down the real killer?
Bill Nighy stars as Charles Paris, with Suzanne Burden as Frances, in this dramatisation by Jeremy Front.
    Duration: two hours.

    Another excellent dramatization
I was really happy to find this as I love all the Simon Brett stories about Charles Paris. Bill Nighy does an excellent job with the rest of the cast to bring these amusing murder mysteries to life. The sounds of London are spot on and the production values excellent.
    Fantastic Production
The cast is superb, the writing is sharp and funny and the production values are the best that you can get. I highly recommend.
    love, love, love this series!
with a terrific cast, a great story. it's incredibly funny. more, please! and oh, bill nighy!!!
    I love this series!!
Would you listen to Charles Paris: A Decent Interval again? Why?
Yes!! Great acting from the entire cast and fantastic production values overall. The stories are just the right mix of drama/mystery and humor.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. Another clever plot (and you gotta love the acknowledgement that trouble follows Charles wherever he goes).
Which character as performed by Bill Nighy was your favorite?
You gotta love Charles Paris. Bill Nighy plays the aging alcoholic actor/ladies man turned amateur sleuth just right, in my opinion. He's the poor man's Poirot!!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions. It's a light mystery with just the right mix of drama and humor.
    Any additional comments?
I own every episode of this series. I've listened to each episode multiple times (great for background at work). I hope the series continues!!!
    Updated (thank God)
By now Charles Paris would be 87, and probably pinching care assistant's bottoms, if he hadn't been reborn, like Dr Who, in the person of Bill Nighy. He's much funnier, less sexually predatory, sexist, uncomfortable with LGBT people, (people of colour aren't in his universe) snobbish and suspicious than his original avatar.
This version is self aware humorous and capable of love, even though he's not good at it. His relationship with Frances has two sides; she's not the stooge of the novels, but a fully rounded woman capable of refusing his advances or accepting them on her own terms.
