    And Life Goes On
If you consider that I fell asleep with ear buds in my ears a fact that I couldn't stop listening you'd be right.
I have always enjoyed Miss G's attitude toward life. I know when I listen more often I tend to mimic her bravery and "can do" fierceness.
Ms Davidson has captured this cast of characters and bootleg them up. She just takes the top off to let the aroma of suspense and mystery float around the room long enough to begin her next book. As inspiration wans the bottle opens.
I can't wait to read the next one. You can read out of order but only by one or two books. More than that and you could miss an entire character.
    Nobody's best effort.....
Diane Mott Davidson's "Goldy Bear" series is the most uneven of any of the contemporary cozy detective series. A few are absolutely excellent, a couple are perfectly dreadful, and the majority are spread throughout the middle somewhere, neither remarkably good or bad. Except for the recipes. Those are ALWAYS good.
This one's in the middle, tending toward the 'not so good' side. For one thing, there's very little catering going on, which is the key element for me, anyway, the part I most enjoy. Not only that, there's not even much murder going on. What we have, instead, is Goldy holding forth, for dozens of minutes at a time, all about the evils of her former husband, "the Jerk". That's half the book. The other half is Goldy obsessing about her annoying son again, "Arch", certainly the most spoiled child in all of literature. There are times I swear she's just watching the kid -- who must be in his early teens -- minute by minute, to make sure he draws another breath. Enough, already! Goldy and 'the Jerk' have been divorced for several years, Goldy herself is remarried. At times I felt like taking her by the shoulders, shaking her, and saying, 'Get on with it!' Forget him! He's gone!" There's a real pathology there, her hanging unto all the hurts from that past relationship, ready to repeat them all, again and again, at the drop of a hat to anyone who will listen. And in an auciobook, that would be us.
I won't get started on "Arch" the son again.

    These BBC Efforts Never Disappoint!
Look for this title to pop up on sale and grab it at discount! The cast does credit to small-town British evils, with even pacing and careful plot development. A murder occurs in wintry conditions, and possible culprits abound!
    Death by Misadventure
Would you listen to The Sittaford Mystery (Dramatised) again? Why?
Yes. I have listened to it several times. It is a clever mystery.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sittaford Mystery (Dramatised)?
    The table turning.
What about John Moffatt and Stephen Tompkinson s performance did you like?
All the voices were distinct and fit the characters. I could visualize the scenes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes, every time.
    Any additional comments?
Emily is a plucky heroine. I liked her interactions with the other characters. Good non-series short story.
    Totally Enjoyable
The performances were superb! I knew the story, but the performances made it new and more enjoyable. Rarely do I listen to a book more than once; this will be the exception. I look forward to more full cast productions.
One of the best stand alone Christie stories
Entertaining and well performed full cast audio adaptation of Agatha Christie's book. As each mystery unfolds, it is easy to imagine you are really there experiencing it all.
    Spooky and atmospheric, outstanding performances.
Excellent production of this story. The parts are played so well, and easily discernible from each other. One of those Christies stories that twists and turns and really gathers speed towards the end.
I really loved to sound effects, fire crackling, snowy sounds and crunching of feet in snow. Really creates a warm cosy feel or icy depending on scene. Music is used occasionally to add to the mood and atmosphere.
Parts are actually really scary! But then I don't want to spoil the story...
Loved it! Perfect for dog walking and ironing!

Love the story... Hate the typos
Have been a JP Thatcher fan for years and a devoted Kindle user since I first discovered them ... BUT as a retired English teacher and former newspaper editor, am really distressed by all of the errors found in these books. Will continue to purchase them, but wish I could make the corrections as I am reading so that I would have a corrected version when I choose to reread them.
Why did this go out of print?
This series was a new discovery for me, even though the books are long out of print. Emma Lathen is the clever nom de plume of a pair of authors, whose contributions to the whole are so well interlaced that I am unable to distinguish between the two voices. The book is a mystery in the form of the golden age classics. Well plotted, good characters, interesting sleuth, with many humorous and witty lines. I intend to read the whole series.
Emma Lathen is under read and is a great series for mystery buffs
My Aunt introduced me to her in the 1980s when I was looking for a new series. The protagonist is a SVP of banking at a giant NY bank back n the day when NYC controlled everything. John Thatcher gets roped in to save the investment of his bank. The causes seem obviously emotional but always come down to money. He sniffs it out with the help of his wonderful cronies, playboy but good banker Charles, straight laced Everett, young Nichols, and secretary Miss Corsa who keeps everything straight. His bosses the Pres and Chairman are busy being social and useless, but great fun. A much under rated series. When you find ne, let me know!
    Five Stars
Enjoyed the book. I liked the banking angle to a mystery.
    Disappointed
I found the plot slow and plodding with little character development. I could not visualize people or places due to lack of description. This was not an intriguing or interesting mystery.

    Excellent addition to the series!
A definite good addition to the franchise, while factoring the story into current series. The plausibility is excellent and the time frame of the story is believable. I am looking forward to any installments from Mr. Todd. Well done!
    What's not to like?
Not a bad read. Especially if you are a Sherlock Holmes fan.
    Another case for Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes â or rather Arthur Conan Doyle â has provided an endless supply of entertainment and stories with books, movies and TV series for fans of the genre. In this short, fast-paced novella, Todd has done a credible job of maintaining that Sherlock Holmes style and has captured the familiar characters well. I was not disappointed. A few minor typos.
    A fun, quick read.
Todd certainly captured the feel of classic Sherlock Holmes in this short novella. It will certainly be enjoyable to anyone looming for an enjoyable read of 1-2 hours. My only complaint would be one of asking for more!
    Great book !
I started reading and could not put it down. Kept you guessing . You will really enjoy this book. A great Sherlock Holmes mystery.

    An extremely good primer
What made the experience of listening to Crime/Mystery Starter Library the most enjoyable?
The stories, which I thoroughly enjoyed and also the narrator, who gave a good performance of all the books.
What did you like best about this story?
That's a hard one. It's not one story. I think I liked the first story best, even though I didn't manage to solve it.
What about Richard Wards performance did you like?
Variation. The English books were delivered with an English accent and the American ones with the American accent. Voices were also well done.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Hardly. It's very long and incorporates four different books but I liked the idea of getting stories by authors I'd never heard of before.
    Any additional comments?
This is one I'll probably listen to again once I've forgotten the stories a bit. For their era, they're well written and (mostly) tightly plotted.

    Publisher's Summary:
Adrian Gray was born in May 1862 and met his death through violence, at the hands of one of his own children, at Christmas, 1931.
Thus begins a classic crime novel published in 1933, a riveting portrait of the psychology of a murderer.
Each December, Adrian Gray invites his extended family to stay at his lonely house, King's Poplars. None of Gray's six surviving children is fond of him; several have cause to wish him dead. The family gathers on Christmas Eve - and by the following morning, their wish has been granted.
This fascinating and unusual audiobook tells the story of what happened that dark Christmas night - and what the murderer did next.
    Members Reviews:
    great book
Great book. Different murder premise. I really enjoyed reading this book.
    Anything but cosy!
I gather that this is the fiftieth forgotten classic to be issued in the British Library series. I have read nearly all of them and in many ways find this the most difficult to review.
The plot is, on the surface, simple.
Adrian Gray is murdered in the library of his house, Kingâs Poplars, deep in the heart of Grebeshire, at Christmas. The murderer is one of his six children. The culprit is revealed one fifth of the way into the book. The remainder provides a psychological study of that person and a little detection, both professional and amateur. To say more would be too revealing.
The Gray family members, and some of their spouses, are mostly eminently dislikeable. I found the murderer to be one of the most egocentric and hateful I have encountered in Golden Age fiction-a tribute to the vivid portrayal at which Anne Meredith excels. The only jarring note in her pen portraits is the casual anti-Semitism, so typical of this period, and so unacceptable.
I cannot say I enjoyed reading this book although it was undoubtedly compelling. The writing is excellent and the concept is brilliantly carried through.
Avid readers of Golden Age British detection might like to compare this with Christieâs 1938 novel, âHercule Poirotâs Christmasâ. In my opinion, âPortrait of a Murdererâ is vastly superior.
This edition comes with an informative Introduction by Martin Edwards which ends:-
âYet Portrait of a Murderer is notable for its portrayal of character and social comment, and illustrates the truth that, contrary to widespread belief, a good many crime novels written during âthe Golden Age of murderâ between the two world wars were anything but cosy.â
    Be warned!
    In the bleak midwinter...
Every Christmas, the Gray family gather at the home of their elderly father, Adrian Gray â a rather unpleasant, miserly sort of man who has produced an equally unpleasant bunch of children on the whole. This Christmas, in 1931, only a couple of the children are there out of any feelings of affection â most are trying to screw money out of the old man.
There's Richard, a politician who desperately wants a title, but feels he needs to put on a show of wealth to impress the people who could grant his wish. Eustace is a son-in-law, married to Adrian's daughter Olivia â a dodgy financier, his whole reputation is on the line if he doesn't manage to raise a substantial sum of money urgently. Brand is the most wayward of them all, having run off in his youth to try his hand at being an artist.

FNH Audio presents an unabridged reading of the classic best known Sherlock Holmes story.

I envy anyone who has not read this novella.
This is Doyle's longest and most complete story. We get to know several characters besides Holmes and Watson. Doyle describes Dartmoor and the Grimpen Mire with tantalizing details.
If you are not familiar with any of the movies, radio or TV adaptations, you have a rare treat in store. But even if you have been a longtime fan of Sherlock Holmes it is worth another read.
    Absolutely Classic Story
The classic Holmes story. It can be a bit wordy at times but the reasoning behind that was to involve the reader in the general moodiness and atmosphere of the story. This isn't THE Holmes story to read if you are just becoming acquainted with Holmes, but it is very worthwhile reading once you've been introduced to him via some of the short stories or perhaps even A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four.
    Old school detective story
If you want to start with Holmes, start here. Many old school stories don't hold up well, this does. For cultural literacy reasons alone it's worth the time (it's a quick read) but it's also a good story. Call it up on the Kindle for a buck and enjoy the bus ride.
    One of the best
It was fun to have a Holmes novel with Watson taking center stage. This is a classic. Doyle makes you picture and actually feel the moor. Do yourself a favor and read this one. (One star is taken off for the incredible amount of typos.)
    Sherlock Holmes rocks
Sherlock Holmes is the best. Read every story over and over again. Love this one because it proves that answers don't have to be fanciful to be right.

Title: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Length: 11 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-29-17
    Publisher: Oregan Publishing
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
"THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES" is a collection of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. It was first published on 14 October 1892, though the individual stories had been serialised in The Strand Magazine between June 1891 and July 1892. The stories are not in chronological order, and the only characters common to all twelve are Holmes and Dr. Watson. As with all but four of the Sherlock Holmes stories, those contained within "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" are told by a first-person narrative from the point of view of Dr. Watson.
In general, the stories in "THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES" identify, and try to correct, social injustices. Holmes is portrayed as offering a new, fairer sense of justice. The stories were well received, and boosted the subscriptions figures of "The Strand Magazine", prompting Doyle to be able to demand more money for his next set of stories. The first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia", includes the character of Irene Adler, who, despite being featured only within this one story by Doyle, is a prominent character in modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, generally as a love interest for Holmes. Doyle included four of the twelve stories from this collection in his twelve favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, picking "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" as his overall favourite.

Beautiful single-volume edition for a great price
This is a beautiful, well constructed, and finely printed volume of the collected works of Sherlock Holmes. These are my impressions of the book (mostly good!):
    THE PROS:
    * It is a hardcover book with a cloth cover. It has an elegant houndstooth pattern and simple cover design (as shown in the picture). It also comes with a yellow ribbon bookmark and a slipcase for storage. Overall I think it's a really attractive book that would certainly catch my eye on the shelf. It's one of those book designs that makes you want to read it.
    * The binding is cloth and seems to be very durable. Cloth bindings are, of course, commonly used on big books, such as bibles and dictionaries, that are large and heavy and need to last a long time. I think that's the goal with this volume as well.
    * The book itself is quite large: approximately 10 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and nearly 3 inches thick. It's also fairly heavy owing to its thinnish pages. In my opinion, these attributes qualify as good things. The entire collected works are here in one volume, which I can keep in a single place on my bookshelf, and use as a single volume when I want to take the book on a trip or read the stories to my children. But I see that this is a matter of preference (see my "cons" section below).
    * The text is printed on the small side, but I think it falls easily within the readable category (not always to be expected from a single volume edition of Sherlock!). See my photo for a better look.
    * The paper is nice, in my opinion. It's not quite as thin or glossy as bible pages, but it's on the thin side. Any thicker and it could never fit into a single volume.
    * The price is right.

    - Trois morts, c'est exact, dit Danglard. Mais cela regarde les médecins, les épidémiologistes, les zoologues. Nous, en aucun cas. Ce n'est pas de notre compétence.
    - Ce qu'il serait bon de vérifier, dit Adamsberg. J'ai donc rendez-vous demain au Muséum d'Histoire naturelle.
    - Je ne veux pas y croire, je ne veux pas y croire. Revenez-nous, commissaire. Bon sang mais dans quelles brumes avez-vous perdu la vue?
    - Je vois très bien dans les brumes, dit Adamsberg un peu sèchement, en posant ses deux mains à plat sur la table. Je vais donc être net. Je crois que ces trois hommes ont été assassinés.
    - Assassinés, répéta le commandant Danglard. Par l'araignée recluse ?

Another delicious mystery from Fred Vargas.
So delighted that Commissaire Adamsberg is back. I couldn't wait for the translation into English, so I'm slowly making my way through Fred Vargas's lovely prose and marvelous invention. And strangely, suddenly recluse spiders are popping up everywhere around me. Coincidence?
    Sublime
Been a while since my last "worth it" thriller read... and even though im reading as FLE student (soo many words to look up), commissaire Adamsberg and the recluse kept me hanging till the very end. It has the right doses of all elements of a good thriller
    Fred Vargas at her best
Fred Vargas at her best. Her novel is full of suspense, full of humor, beautifully written in a style that is both original and extremely powerful. You always feel like a friend of yours left when you close the book knowing that you will not meet Adamsberg for a few years.
    Five Stars
    Un très bon livre !
    Best yet
I must say that I haven't read one of the Vargas rompols that I didn't like, and I think I have read them all. The last one I read always seems to be the best one ( even when it's re-read later) and that is the case with this one. There's always something interesting in the development of the old characters and in the invention of the new ones. Her treatment of the perpetrators often highlights the ambiguity of their actions: this is particularly well done in this case. It really shows what ugly stepsisters Justice and Vengeance are to Mercy. The language is an important part of good writing and in the Vargas books some things depend on the particular nuance of the word used so read it in the French version if possible (traduttore; traditore.)
