This story is very true to the Gardner's novels. Love Perry-daring, dashing and cool. My family loves CRT's Perry Mason too. I listen to this often. the quality of this dramatization is excellent. Thanks for a great story!!

Brings back Memories

I have a stack of books/audiobooks on my desk all in the 800 plus pages/40 plus hours range. Before I started reading/listening I was looking for something a bit different to end the year with. I came across this radio dramatization of a Perry Mason Radio Show. I remember listening to Perry Mason on the radio when I was young. I thought this might be just the change I was seeking.

Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) was an attorney. He passed the Bar in 1911. He practiced in Southern California for many years. He had a large Chinese clientele and he spoke fluent Chinese. Using information from his practice, he wrote magazine stories for pulp magazines in the 1920s and 30s. He primarily wrote mysteries and westerns. When the pulps declined he went on to write novels. He wrote about 150 Perry Mason novels.

This story was made into a movie in 1934. It starred Warren Williams and Mary Aster. Williams played Mason in four movies. In this story, Perry writes a Will for Arthur Cartwright. Arthur believed a howling dog in his neighborhood indicated that someone had been murdered. Cartwrights next-door neighbor is found murdered and Cartwright is missing.

I sort of wished that this was a replay of the original radio show rather than a dramatization by the Colonial Radio Players. But I guess sound quality would be much better in the dramatization. It was great to listen to many people playing parts rather than a single narrator reading the story. This book does make for a nice change of pace. This brought back memories of listening to plays and programs on the radio.

The book is one hour and eighteen minutes long. The performers were Jerry Robbins and the Colonial Radio Players.

Fun to see the original!

If you grew up watching the old b&w Perry Mason shows on tv, here is a chance to here what the original character was like, along with Della and that savvy detective. Perry Mason is a bit more edgy and considered a bit of a maverick in these. Worth checking out for the fun in it!

Big Perry Mason Fan

If you are looking for the great Perry Mason from the Erle Stanley Gardner books, look no more!! This is another great piece by Colonial Radio Theater. All my favorites are there-hard hitting Perry, efficient Della, and shrewd Paul. Great entertainment! I have listened to this many times and find this dramatization to be so enjoyable.

Also... I wish someone would do enactments of the A.A. Fairs -- Donald Lam and Bertha Cool... those were pretty much made for radio broadcasts!

Acting falls flat

I love all the Perry Mason books and thought a dramatization was a great idea. The stories lend themselves to the spoken word. Unfortunately, it was difficult getting past the high school production values. While the actor for Perry was not too bad, Della was just plain awful. She sounded 16. And I would not be surprised to learn that for most of the other actors they had just read the script as they were recording it. I bought another Perry Mason by the same company and will let you know if it's the same for that episode, too.

New Mystery Written in 1920's Style-What A Thrill!

Mysteries written in the 20s or 30s -- or set in the 20s or 30s -- are some of my favorites. Rennie Airth has written a wonderful story, evocative of post WWI era, but introducing modern elements, like a serial killer with psychological problems. The characters are well-drawn, the plot keeps you interested, and a little love story is thrown in for added enjoyment. Christopher Kay does an excellent job narrating, making vaious regional British accents sound believable (at least to an American!) and still making them understandable.

I will definitely be looking for more from Airth.

Exceptional Story

This book kept me up all night listening. While seemingly a story of gratuitous murder, River of Darkness also explores the theme of how a person's psyche long after a war is over. War, in fact, is never over for some. Airth skillfully weaves together a police investigation, a love story, and a killer's narrative. I highly recommend this book. The narrator was excellent and his regional accents sounded authentic, at least to my untrained ear.

I though it was trying to ride the fence between romance and mystery/war in order to interest a broader audience. Failed.

This Mystery Does Not Sacrifice Story

River of Darkness exceeded my expectations. I thought I was buying a detective yarn, where a brilliant detective would be paired against a wily and diabolical killer, chasing clue after clue until finally piecing together the mystery. And make no mistake, those elements are strong throughout the book, but at the same time, RoD offers quite a bit more.

Like all the best stories, this is really about living people, not murders. This is somewhat ironic, given that when we first meet him, the protagonist is a man in many respects already dead. Set just a few years after WWI, the echoes of that terrible conflict are still very much present in the world of "River." It seems to stain combatants and non-combatants alike, men and women both.

Despite the grisly subject matter and the sense of ennui that seems to surround so many of the characters when we first meet them, this is ultimately a positive, redemptive book.

A Delightful New Series!

Absolutely yes! I would recommend it for anyone who loves mysteries, complex characters, and a powerful story.

Revisiting the 1890 classic

If you're unfamiliar with this story, you can't do better than to choose this virtuoso narration by David Timson. It's astounding, even for an actor whose narrations are consistently of the highest quality.

A lovely young lady comes to Holmes to help her solve a mystery: she has been receiving a pearl of great price each year from an anonymous donor.

You'll see Holmes at his best and worst, Watson at his most chilvalrous and romantic. An eccentric valetudinarian, a gang of criminals, foreign lands, violence, adventure, and a man with a most unusual sidekick all figure in this engaging tale.

Highly recommended to all who love Victorian classics and good mysteries!

Excellent Narration and Story!

I am a big fan of David Timson's audio performances, he makes it look easy! He lends terrific narration to Watson, Holmes and all of the other characters in The Sign of Four. I hadn't read this story in quite a while and it was relieving to see it was as good as I remember it! The violins that accompany the end/beginning of each part really adds to the performance. This story is highly recommended - don't hesitate and get it now!

A Mixed Bag

This seemed to have been a week when I was destined to listen to unknown works by two authors I enjoy (See my review of Double Star by Robert Heinlein).

The narration of The Sign of Four was very good. He varied the characters voices so that you had a good image of each one. Discovering the meeting and romance of John Watson and Mary Marston was also enjoyable.

The book does fall down in middle, however, and never really recovers. The first half is classic Holmes and Watson and they quickly resolve the mystery. The second half is devoted to the culprit giving a detailed and (to my mind) tedious back story of the events that led up to the story's two murders.

As with Double Star, I bought this audio book as a daily deal but it wasn't nearly as good a bargain as that book. Given the low price, I felt reasonably satisfied with it.

Miss Whitfield makes a wonderful Miss Marple. Just the right combination of shrewd judgement and elderly fussiness.

I did' realize this was an abridged "performance," and I hate those.

But it's a good story.. The readers were good. I just don't like the format- or that Audible requires you to use words more words just to lengthen reviews. It's stupid.

Pretty Good for a Time-Passer, but Nothing Special

June Whitfield has done a very good job of voicing Miss Marple each time she's done it, and the BBC is quite reliable for putting together good casts, good scripts, and overall good performances. I like these radio play adaptations of Agatha Christie because they're a little safer for listening to while driving, in my opinion, than audio books would be -- I say this because with the plays, you don't have to pay as close of attention to every word in order to follow the story, thus enabling you to remain a good, attentive driver. They're nice for airports, too, because you can usually fit one or two right into the average layover. Nothing too deep to weary the mind; just a fun little mystery.

In this instance, I felt like the BBC trimmed out a few too many of the details, which made the solution and the story itself far less interesting (and also made things less clear than they were in the book).

Irritating

This is not one of Christie's better known stories but I've always liked it. It's atmospheric and I've always thought the murder and motive quite clever and surprising. In general, the performers do quite a nice job, though the person who plays the Met inspector (and why is it a "Met inspector" when it's supposed to be Superintendent Battle???) overdoes it and makes the character unattractive. The real problem, though, is whoever adapted the original story. I've come to terms with adaptions that change the original story out of love and respect for it, that seem to play with the characters or story in order to examine various aspects of the original in a new light. It's taken me a while to get to that point, but the new Marples and Poirots on TV have finally brought me to being a bit more open minded about my Christie adaptions. This adaption, however, does not play with the story or characters in order to examine them in a new light, it just changes them for no good reason other than that it seems to think Christie's original plot wasn't smart enough so it will fix it up by making a number of the attractive characters into jerks. In my opinion, Christie's original plot was quite good enough, and this is a significant worsening of the situation. I particularly resent the way they changed the character of Mary, who's always been a favorite of mine. I'd avoid this if you actually like this book.

The Queen of Crime always makes murder enjoyable

Ever since my first introduction to The Queen of Crime, I've loved reading her books. I got this book as a way to read one of my favorite Miss Marple stories again. I loved the dramatized version as I felt I were there! I will always recommend Agatha Christie as an author and now I will recommend any BBC Radio dramatized production.

Hmmm....another question for a non-fiction book. It seems Mr. Audible thinks A Pocketful of Rye is a book about the history of growing rye in Britain.

VERY ENJOYABLE

Very enjoyable Agatha Christie starring June Whitfield, not my favourable actress, mine is the late Joan Hickson, perfect Oh! Marple. However; June Whitfield is rather good for radio. I can listen to this one anytime and enjoy as much as the first time, even though I knew from the start who did it. Afraid Christie was too obvious with this one, but we forgive her. The Pocket Full of Rye is a comforting listen. Well done BBC.

Settle down in your fave comfy chair a nice drink & relax for over 2 riveting hours of fun & intrigue. All the Christie stories are perfect British crime thrillers. You will not be disappointed.

Old but good

An interesting programme to compare to modern TV adaptations. One has to think in an old fashioned way, a good experience which I was glad to take.

Fabulous dramatisation performed by an all star cast. I'm sure that the cast have as much enjoyment in performing these dramatisations as we do in listening. Just delightful and,as ever,sorry when it came to an end. However, these are so perfect that I will listen over again many times no doubt! Much recommended!

Nestled among the usual notices about dogs for sale and appeals for domestic help, the startling entry in the personal column of the Chipping Cleghorn Gazette has the the entire village agog with curiosity. Is it a game? And who is meant to attend?

Sure enough, the evening sees a crowd of residents standing expectantly in the drawing-room at Little Paddocks. Then the clock strikes the half-hour, the lights go out, and three gunshots ring in the dark. When the lights go back on, the promised murder has been committed. Can Miss Marple work out what has happened and why?

Enjoyed all the different character voices and the sound effects that add atmosphere and makes one feel as though we are right there with them listening and watching everything, but invisible.

A Classic!

A first class dramatisation of one of Christie's classic murder mysteries - this one is one of the best - one of my favourite stories of hers, and one of the best dramatisations of all of her stories and I have nearly all of them and listen to them all regularly. Enjoy!

A drama to die for!

Superb performance of a classic. Excellent cast, June Whitfield is an extremely credible Marple. Story is wonderfully far fetched but all the better for it! Lovely short Marplesque musical interludes add to the listening pleasure. A relaxing Sunday afternoon listen.

Agatha Christie at her best

I have really enjoyed the dramatisation of A Murder is Announced. It kept me guessing for a while.
