Gwenda Reed arrives from New Zealand, travelling ahead of her husband with the task of finding the perfect place to make their base. In the quiet village of Dilmouth, she finds a house with immediate appeal.
A few renovations will convert it into her ideal home. Then things get very strange indeed. Wanting porch stairs, Gwenda hires a builder to put them in - only to find some old steps, covered up by bushes. She decides on a connecting doorway between the drawing-room and the dining-room, but discovers one already there, now plastered over. When she opens the painted-over doors of an old cupboard to find wallpaper exactly the same as she had imagined, she begins to wonder if she is going mad.
It takes Miss Marple to realise that an unsolved murder is behind Gwenda's apparent intuition - but even she does not suspect the murderer will strike again...

i just knew jane and i had it figured out and couldn't wait to see if i was right, and sure enough it wasn't who they thought it was but who we meaning me and jane did,and she had listed all the reasons,i had it's like solving crimes with an old friend.i enjoyed listening as much as i did watching the bbc ones i've seen on masterpiece.or when use to read her books.
    Very fun listen!
    Any additional comments?
This production of Agatha Christie's "Sleeping Murder" was originally made for BBC radio. I had wondered what it would be like before deciding to listen to it--the experience of which left me wishing I had not waited!
I felt as though I had moved back in time to when our family actually sat around listening to stories on the radio when I was a child--and what fun that was. (Possibly why I so enjoy listening to Audio books). Those were times when the listener depended upon good actors and sound effects--and this selection does not disappoint with either.
June Whitfield plays Miss Marple (this was the last of the MIss Marple stories written by Christie), and as usual, she provides the calming presence who is able to see solutions by careful observation of what she sees and hears.
The story/play is set in England, A young woman, returning after living in New Zealand, is seeking to find a house for herself & husband. Upon finding a particular place, she begins having flashbacks from childhood that she has difficulty believing, since they point to the possibility that she may have witnessed a murder in that same house as a small child.
The rest of the play develops the characters and reveals the information needed to reach the conclusion along with Miss Marple. The people who read the other parts were each excellent--the sound quality of this production is very good. I think it might be a (relatively) recent production of a classic Christie. It does not disappoint in any way, except that it left me wishing it had been twice as long!
    Enjoyable. Got me through choresm
I gave the narration a "3" which may not be entirely fair. No irritating voices. I find I just don't like the dramatic versions as much as the single narrator format. This one was read a little too dramatically and the sounds a little too over board for my taste.

My favorite book- my favorite drama
Where does The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Dramatised) rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
TMORA is one of the best dramas that the BBC has done from Agatha Christie's Poirot books, probably because it's one of her best books in the first place. Readers are more sophisticated these days so the revelation may not have the same dramatic effect but when I first read it I was blown away. The radio drama manages to keep the suspense and mystery until the appropriate time remarkably well.
Who was your favorite character and why?
John Moffat as Poirot is brilliant. Dr.Shepherd is great too.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    It Just Got Real.
    Any additional comments?
If you can't read the book this audio version is almost as good. The story is told in a tight, concise way that retains all the mystery and charm of the novel. I highly recommend it- along with all of the BBC Agatha Christie radio dramas. Git some.
A good way to wile away time
A typical Agatha Christie but short and well narrated. Story is a bit typical with the famouse Agatha Christie confrontation at the end
    good performance
good performance but it was a little confusing of you have not read the book
    More BBC!
Wish BBC would do more of these! And perhaps branch out to other literary works like Bunyan, Addison, Blake, And more. Really makes required college reading transcend from boring to interesting; and further provides context for these older works.
wooden narrator takes edge off one of the greats

    Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 83 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
This is the very first Poirot/Hastings story. Set in 1916, we meet Captain Hastings as he is invalided out of the Great War and goes to convalesce at Styles Court, the family home of his great friend, John Cavendish. By an extraordinary coincidence, billeted in the village is a brilliant little retired detective with an egg-shaped head, who made a considerable impression on the Captain when he was in Belgium.
Styles is not a happy household and in the blistering summer heat, tensions mount. Even so, the tragic murder which occurs is not expected. The entire family is drawn into the case but with their reluctant permission, Hastings calls upon the services of the diminutive Belgian. Thus begins one of the great partnerships and friendships in the history of crime.
A destroyed will, a shattered coffee cup, an old envelope - such are the seemingly unrelated details surrounding the murder of Mrs Inglethorp, mistress of Styles Court. With a thoroughness that is to become legendary, Hercule Poirot, the methodical little Belgian, begins his first - and perhaps most fascinating - investigation.
Cast includes Philip Jackson, Nicola McAuliffe and Simon Williams.

    Most Entertaining!
Where does The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Dramatised) rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I thoroughly enjoy the BBC radio dramatizations of the Agatha Christie novels. They are well done and the Mysterious Affair at Styes, is no exception.
What did you like best about this story?
It is Agatha Christie's first novel. I read the book and then wanted to listen to the full cast audio. Really enjoyed the whole performance.
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
I was able to tell the different characters voices apart. All the actors were lively and engaging in character. Love, love all the background noises and side effects.
    Any additional comments?
Wonderful way to relax in the evening after a long day.
    Good addition to the series
If you could sum up The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Dramatised) in three words, what would they be?
    Great series start
Who was your favorite character and why?
Poirot is always my favorite. Although he is self important and vain, he is often put in his place by those who don't fall at his feet because of his intelligence. It keeps him humble.
What aspect of the narratorss performance would you have changed?
I would have choosen someone with a younger, stronger sounding voice to be Hastings.
    Any additional comments?
I like the dramatizations; the characters really come to life. I didn't really care for this recording's Hastings. He sounds old and dottering when Hastings is suppose to be relatively young and a good man in fight. His inflection was good (showing Hastings penchant for falling immediately in love with every beautiful woman in need). Otherwise I have no complaints.
    Another Fantastic Hercule Poirot
The very first in the Agatha Christie 'Hercule Poirot' series.

    Love hasting.
What did you love best about Murder on the Links (Dramatised)?
I love all books with hasting in. I especially like this one as we meet the gal who Hastings gets with.
    Very enjoyable
I am probably not a good source for an opinion on the BBC radio dramatizations of Agatha Christie's works because I find them all absolutely marvelous theatre of the mind.
    Wonderful Full Cast Radio Drama
What made the experience of listening to Murder on the Links (Dramatised) the most enjoyable?
All the actors were superb. The sound effects make it realistic.
Which character as performed by John Moffatt was your favorite?
    Poirot and Hastings, of course.
    Any additional comments?
If you like Agatha Christie novels, you will enjoy this radio production. Murder on the Links is one of Christie's earlier works and a good listen.
    SLEUTH IN FRANCE
Intriguing array of characters and trails encountered by Poirot in his quest to solve the crimes using his little grey cells. Romance has a place, too. In my opinion this is one of Christie's best stories with a well chosen cast for the dramatised series by the BBC.
    Good acting
a bit of a tricky plot to follow but written very well and played out just as well.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Private eye Mike Hammer is no stranger to murder, but this time he has two to untangle - the killing of the Captain, a legless, homeless panhandler, dismissed by the police as minor, and the slaying of gambling kingpin Marty Wellman, whose lady friend, Helen Venn, turns to the P.I. for help when the Mob fingers her for the next kill. Seems the new kingpin, Carmen Rich - with whom Hammer has a violent history - thinks Helen made off with ten mil in skim money courtesy of her late lover, or anyway, so Rich claims. But Mike Hammer knows a damsel in distress when he sees one and takes up Helen's cause, igniting a series of hit attempts on the P.I. by a small army of out-of-town shooters - some as far out of town as Cuba. Such minor distractions can't prevent the toughest detective of them all from solving two murders and avenging a "little death" in a big way.
    Critic Reviews:
Vol. 1 of this Blackstone series was a finalist for the prestigious 2009 Audie Award for Distinguished Achievement in Production. Here Vol. 2 continues this fully-dramatized "theater-of-the-mind" audio adventure enhanced with sound effects and music.

    Relentless psychos
Few readers are better suited to their characters than Stacy Keach to Mike Hammer. His leathery growl brings Hammer, a private eye who's a relentless psychopath to life--making him almost sympathetic. Best exchange in the book? Something like this:
Hammer: "Honey, fix your skirt. I'm only human."
    Velda: "Suffer!"
    Easy listening. Fun, too.
    Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer
The Stories are what they are, old fashioned now, with vigilante stabbings and shootings aplenty. Accompanying the Mike Hammer and Velda characters there is always sexual undertone. I enjoyed the wonderful voice of stacy Keach and his rendition of Mike Hammer. It's well worth a listen.
True to the style of Mike Hammer
Not to be taken too seriously, but this book kept to the genre and was a pleasant listen.
Entertaining On A Long Ride In A Car.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it is a great mystery.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, when a person is missing like his partner.
What does Stacy Keach bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Love to listen to his voice and pronounced his words so clear.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I enjoyed this book. It was short enough to finish in a few hours, and filled with red herrings. Good mystery.
    What an ending!

This was a quick and interesting read...Wandering through a woman's Sherlock Holmes -style story. I enjoyed the ending very much.

    A Dandy Little Mystery
This book grabbed me immediately because of the startling setting. We find ourselves in a boarding house, whose owner is narrating her concerns that a murder has been committed. But, lo! There are people rowing boats down the hallway of her establishment and tying up at the stairway on the second floor! You see, her town suffers annual flooding, and she is resigned to the fact that every year, her basement is subterranean and her first floor tenants must be housed on the upper floors. And, oh, yes, when the water goes down, she knows she'll have to re-paper the walls. Not to mention that any of her furniture and other items that are swept out in the floor are apt to be nabbed by her neighbor, Molly Maguire, who will have finder's rights to them.
But back to the murder, if there is a murder, and our narrator isn't certain. But it seems that the actor couple, originally housed on the first floor, but now sheltering in a second floor room with her own obsidian clock, is no longer a couple. The wife is missing and so is the clock. This would be unnerving in normal times, but now there is the brooding fear that perhaps a body is floating around in the underwater regions of the first floor or even the basement. And the clock, well, it won't float, so not even Molly Maguire is likely to find it.
So is there a murder, or is there not? This well told little tale keeps us in suspense until the end -- just the way we like it, don't we?

    Holmes to the Rescue!
Through a lot of road trips and sleepless nights, Sherlock Holmes has been a wonderful companion to the members of my family. As interpreted by the brilliant Derek Jacobi, "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" in audio form seems fresh and new. You just can't beat this for sheer joyful escapism!
    Wonderful!
What did you love best about The Return of Sherlock Holmes?
I loved the way it was read. It was great.
What did you like best about this story?
The story was classic Sherlock Holmes. Wonderful as usual.
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite story was "The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez" because of it's dramatic ending.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I love this book because you can listen to it in bits and pieces not necessarily all at once.
    Jacobi makes my day
What did you love best about The Return of Sherlock Holmes?
Jacobi's voice and characterizations. Plus Holmes. I love Holmes.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Return of Sherlock Holmes?
Oh, no one moment sticks out. I've loved these stories for decades.
Have you listened to any of Derek Jacobis other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Yes. They are all excellent.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Nothing extreme.
By far the best Sherlock Holmes audiobook
Sherlock Holmes mysteries are classic, but having them read by Derek Jacobi is by far the best way to listen to them... they are love of the few series I enjoy listening to over and over again.
    A return to form
As with the previous editions, Derek Jacobi once again does an amazing job of bringing Sherlock Holmes to life in this collection of stories, starting after Holmes supposed death at the Reichenbach Falls. Starting with Watsons' shoving discovery that Holmes is alive, the stories move along at an even pace. Well worth the money, and perfect to while away long journeys.

    For the Fun of It
What a great narrator Derek Jacobi is! His reading of "Sherlock Holmes" unabridged is just flawless. Sherlock Holmes cannot be beat for sheer fun and enjoyment. Try these books in the car -- each story is not too long but still really compelling. There is a reason that Doyle and Holmes are classics -- add Jacobi and you have a winning combination indeed! Elementary!
    Timeless!
I've read these books many times before and wanted to listen to them on my ride between jobs. Great narration is the key to the Holmes Cannon of work. It delievered in spades. Loved it!
    Elementary!
Derek Jacobi delivers Sherlock in fantastic form, the adventures seem short to begin with but as you get further into the book the stories get longer and more involved, which is quite a stroke of genius by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. the audio presentation sounds very authentic and as sherlock should be (I still only ever picture sherlock as jeremy brett), I would recommend this version of the adventures over any others.
    Holmes's first short-story adventures
"Crime is common. Logic is rare. Therefore it is upon the logic rather than upon the crime that you should dwell. You have degraded what should have been a course of lectures into a series of tales."
    - Holmes to Watson, "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches"
"I believe in hard work and not in sitting by the fire spinning fine theories."
    - Inspector Lestrade, "The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor"
Ive arrived in my chronological listening to the Sherlock Holmes tales to the 56 short stories that form the real meat of the canon. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes collects the first 12 of these stories and includes several well-known classics, including A Scandal in Bohemia, which introduces Irene Adler, the crafty woman who outwits Holmes, and the often-assigned school reading, The Adventure of the Speckled Band. (The latter is rightfully familiar, as it contains all the ingredients of the best Holmes stories: a brisk plot, brooding atmosphere, a fiendishly clever crime, and Holmes and Watson risking life and limb for a client.)
Here are tales of a priceless jewel found in the throat of a Christmas goose (The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle), of long-simmering resentment and revenge (The Boscombe Valley Mystery), of an inexplicable disappearance (The Man with the Twisted Lip) and of a complicated and hilarious diversion meant to facilitate robbery (The Adventure of the Red-Headed League). Each story lasted about 45 minutes to an hour the perfect length for my commute so I looked forward for several days to hearing the details of a new case presented in the morning and finding out how Holmes unraveled the mystery in the evening.
One story in particular (The Adventure of the Copper Beeches) contained enough Gothic elements dark family secrets, inexplicable behavior, a locked wing of rooms and a plucky, resourceful governess to fill an entire novel. I would happily have spent more time in the company of Violet Hunter, Holmess perceptive and brave client.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jaded and cynical Los Angeles detective Philip Marlowe meets up with classy, well-endowed redhead Betty Mayfield in this last novel by the master of mystery, Raymond Chandler.
Marlowe is assigned to tail Betty - a cinch, he thinks, until lounge lizard Larry Mitchell turns up dead outside Betty's hotel room a few hours after pawing her in a California club.
Filled with Chandler's famed snappy repartee and starkly frightening scenes, Playback simmers with suspense as Marlowe tries to solve a tale of big money - and, of course, murder.
    Members Reviews:
It doesn't get any better than this!
Great plot and characters, excellent hard-boiled (and, at times, funny) writing by Chandler. Elliott Gould does a really fine job with the narration also. I wish they hadn't abridged it ... wonder why? It's so refrershing to listen to a story that doesn't rely on exotic or impossible technology, gratuitous sex, an ending where everything blows up, and all the other gimmicks used by so many so-called authors today. (There was a little sex, but it fit in beautifully.) Just a great tale, well-read! You won't be disappointed.
    Solid novel, but forgettable
What did you like best about Playback? What did you like least?
The prose was more straight forward and easier to follow in an audiobook than some of Chandler. The narration by Elliot Gould captured Marlowe's voice well.
Would you be willing to try another book from Raymond Chandler? Why or why not?
Sure I would. But, I'm not in a rush to. I like the character of Marlowe, but I find Chandler's plots too knotted. He introduces characters and twists to make the narrative complicated. But, there isn't enough character development to make you care.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The first hour or so was the most compelling.
Did Playback inspire you to do anything?
    Not really.
    Excellent!
This is a really excellent story, one of Phillip Marlowe's best outings in my opinion. Elliott Gould makes an excellent Marlowe. His voice conveys the perfect mix of sensitivity and toughness that makes Chandler's private eye the real deal.
    Boring
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
    Dont know
Has Playback turned you off from other books in this genre?
I will try to be more aware of what i am buying next time.
What three words best describe Elliott Goulds voice?
    Clear, OK.
    Any additional comments?
To humdrum, Did not finish the book.
As cool and gripping as Chandler always is
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, read all Chandlers at any opportunity, if only for his metaphors
What other book might you compare Playback to, and why?
The rest of the Chandler canon: this one somehow wanders a bit, more of a stroll than a jog.
What does Elliott Gould bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
    Authentic American drawl
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, and did, on a long drive.
    Any additional comments?
    Oh, just relax and enjoy
