    Agatha Christie Always Pleases
As with every Agatha Christie, this one features a couple of breakneck twists that keep you guessing to the very end. My only complaint would be there was something of a lack of closure as the "bad guy" wasn't "caught" in the usual way. For all that though, still a good listen.
This was my first time listening to this narrator, and I am more used to Joan Hickson's somewhat more "age-appropriate" voice for Miss Marple. Notwithstanding, Ms. Cole did a good job with the range of voices, and made for an enjoyable listen.
    Pleasent listen
Stephanie Cole is a good substitute for Joan Hickson. The story is well read. It's a comfortable, easy listen.
    Excellent
Having watched the film of this audio book - first class. Will download more. Love Agatha Christy books. Audible well done
    At Bertrams Hotel
Adventurous estranged mum, accidentally goes to the same hotel, what will happen if they meet up!!!!! There's intrigue, murder, love affairs, what more could you ask for from Agatha Christie
    Totally entertaining
I listened to the a chapter at a time over a number of weeks and found it really enjoyable. Apart from one character accent (sounding like an extra from a vampire movie to be honest) the reading / performance was spot on and highly entertaining. Well worth a listen.

Great Wolfe but not the very best story
I have liked virtually all the Nero Wolfe books I have read or listened to, and this is no exception. This is not the best story, but the Archie and Nero characterization is really great. I particularly like the narration which does a great job making Archie come alive. I would not recommend this as a first Nero Wolfe selection (maybe Some Buried Caesar is a good place to start), but any fan will really enjoy Father Hunt. Although this is not the best Wolfe story, even a below average Wolfe is better than most mysteries. The mystery story makes sense and is interesting, intelligent, engaging, and fun, but the characterizations is what makes this particular Wolfe story special.
One of the better Nero Wolfe books
The dialogue and sleuthing we're better than usual. The story had more twists and the ending wasn't quite pulled out of a hat.
This is our 20th or so Nero Wolf book, we are hooked! He is our before bed gentle murder mystery listening. Consistently good.
    Another excellent Prichard read.
It's a Red Stout in the Nero Wolfe collection. if you're familiar, that's all that need be said. if not, get it, sit back, and enjoy a ripping good mystery.
    Typical Rex Stout quality
If you could sum up The Father Hunt in three words, what would they be?
    intriguing. entertaining. Enjoyable.
What other book might you compare The Father Hunt to and why?
Fer-de-Lance had the same kind of intricate plotting and character development.
Which character as performed by Michael Prichard was your favorite?
    Archie Goodwin, as always.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Wanted to but couldn't of course. Every chance I got I went back to it.
    Any additional comments?
Like all the Nero Wolfe books read by Michael Prichard, this was excellent.

Defend a widow, outfox the FBI, and make $100,000
Nero Wolfe's interest is raised when a wealthy woman offers him a huge check if he can get the FBI to stop harassing her. Only a man as arrogant as Nero Wolfe would even dream of attempting this act of professional suicide. But Nero Wolfe loves a challenge, so he takes the case. Although the plots of the books are always clever and engaging, the irresistible appeal of the Nero Wolfe books is the interplay between the principal characters. This is witty banter at its absolute best. Rarely will you hear goads and observations delivered with such acerbic humor or with such rich vocabulary. Stout could have educated Shakespeare in the art of satiric dialog. In particular, this book is my favorite because Mr. Wolfe's real desire to strike a blow for civil liberties and his evident enjoyment of the challenge enriches the story.
The best of the Nero Wolfe series? Perhaps.
If not the absolute best, this is one of the very best of the Nero Wolfe series. It has some of the best characterization and relationship development in the series along with some of the best imagery and cleverness plus it was a brave exposure of the abuses by the FBI of the time, earning Stout a thick FBI file. Although I enjoyed the TV version of this for the premier of the A&E series, the book was much, much better. Although this is a great book, I dont think it should be one of the first read as it depends more than most on the history between characters.
    Annoyed by the FBI?
I started reading Rex Stout -- specifically Nero Wolfe in the sixties. Because of the timing, I collected and read the paperbacks in order, starting with 1934 Fer-de-Lance. This shorter novel had me laughing out loud because it tickled my fancy, propped up my prejudices (about the FBI) and is Archie and Nero in full alter ego stride, albeit closing in (1965) on the end of a long series of well written, entertaining detective novels.

    Not a representative Nero Wolfe
This was more of an adventure story. Not all all the classic deduction driven mystery. For those who love Nero Wolfe and want to hear them all, sure. For those trying Nero Wolfe, it would be better to start with another one.
An off-beat story line by Rex Stout
This story line is very different from just about every other Nero Wolfe book that Rex Stout wrote. Being different it has a number of detractors, which is understandable to an extent.
What you still see is the same interaction between Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, which is always entertaining. Another aspect you don't get in the rest of the Wolfe stories is a view of Stout's view of a communist country In the middle of the Cold War.
If you know and enjoy the world of Archie Goodwin, Nero Wolfe and his brownstone in his other stories, this is an interesting divergence.
If this is your first Nero Wolfe story, read but withhold judgement and read another story then decide. When choosing your first story I suggest you stay way from the books that contain several of his short stories. You cannot get the total atmosphere of the inhabitants of the brownstone; Archie Goodwin (who 'writes' the stories), Fritz, the cook, Theodor the orchid nurse of Wolfe's 10,000 plants in the greenhouse on the roof, Inspector Cramer, Saul Panzer, and much more.
However, be careful. You too may become addicted to the ever fascinating story lines, characters and brilliance of Rex Stout's characters that first saw the world in 1934 in "The Fer-de-lance".
    VINTAGE NERO WOLFE
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
A great buy for fans of Nero and Archie - this is one I hadn't read before. A really interesting story well read as always by Michael Prichard
    not remotely believable
What did you like best about The Black Mountain? What did you like least?
It was nice to have Nero out of the Brownstone but really, the story was so farfetched! And there was quite a bit of violence and even torture.

    Excellent Nero Wolfe Book
Rex Stout does it again! All your favorite characters and great story. Spell binding and intriguingly read....that says it all.
He did it again and again and
Love Nero Wolf, Archie and Fritz! Sometimes I even like Inspector Kramer.
This case was a tough one since the "murderer" had already been tried and was in prison. Then there is the case of the long lost, ?? prodigal son.
The reader is superb, He has both Nero and Archie down to a "t". Yes, I have not only read many but watched the series. I never get tired of the detective who does his work in an overlarge chair.
Nero Wolfe solves a case a jury thinks it has.
Twists and turns and bodies everywhere, this mystery is a tangled knot that only a genius can untangle. Superb naration as usual for Prichard.
One of the funniest & most gruesome
    First, no spoilers:
This entry in one of the greatest detective series of all time is one that makes me laugh out loud as much, if not more than almost any of the others. It's a great one and a typically great performance by Michael Prichard.
    Now for some spoilers:
This one is also one of the grimmest entries. The murderer is practically a serial killer. Four people are murdered, and while the descriptions and details are mild by today's standards, in terms of the series and the standards of the time in which it was published (1956, same age as me), it's pretty gruesome.
Which somehow makes the humor even funnier by contrast. Truly comic relief. Both Wolfe and Archie get in some zingers, both at each others' expense and others' as well (Inspector Cramer, for one).
    Highly recommended
    one of my favorites
one of my favorite Nero Wolfe stories. this one has a real happy ending :)

    Good stuff
Michael Pritchard is one of the best voices out there for audiobooks and he's perfect for Nero Wolfe mysteries. This one has a pretty good plot and is worth a listen.
    Great Stout
This was another particularly excellent Nero Wolfe novel. One of the best I have listened to. The narration, as usual, was great. The story keeps moving and keeps interesting and fun. The plot has some of the most interesting twists and enjoyable character development of any of the Nero Wolfe novels. This one is worth reading more than once.
    Truly one of the best
I read all Rex Stouts books in the 70s, but fortunately I've forgotten most of them. I love them all, but this plot is particularly good.
    A fun read
Rex Stout had an amazing way with words. His stories are fun, witty, and all around well written. And, as read by Michael Pritchard they truly come alive. All of them are gems and this one is no exception!
    Very good, with good ending
This is typical Archie Goodwin, the physical end of Nero Wolfe. I listened to this all night while sitting up on a train. I couldn't fall asleep until I knew whodunit. What happens in California will keep you guessing, for nothing is what it seems. Not RS's best, but very good.

    Nero Wolfe never fails
Great story. Love the voice work.
    My least favorite Nero Wolfe
This story follows a powerful criminal character introduced in And Be a Villain leading to a somewhat anticlimactic showdown with Nero Wolfe. I really like almost every Nero Wolfe novel, and even the ones I dont particularly like, I dont dislike them. This is the one I really did not like. I found the powerful criminal and conflict too derivative of Holmes and Moriarty. I dont want to spoil any of the surprising bits for anyone, but I did not find them interesting or compelling. This is the only book of the series I actually wish I had not read, as the off characterizations here very subtly degraded my relationships with the series characters. I very highly recommend the series, but I would skip this and even And Be a Villain if I had it to do over again.
    loved it!
favorite nero wolfe (so far). many unusual and unexpected events. the twists in the story kept me engaged until the very end.
    Ultimately Satisfying
This seemed a bit of a slow starter, as Rex Stout stories go, but eventually got going and proved ultimately satisfying, with Archie exhibiting fine phonated form, and Wolfe unusually discomfited.
    Excellent nail biter
I was really worried about my heroes but as usual, good triumphed over evil. This might be one of Reed's best woven plots!

Still one of the elite private detectives
Readers familiar with Rex Stout's tales of Nero Wolfe and his Associate Archie Goodwin will be gratified to see that the Old Master retained his mastery of the detective story form to the end of his long writing career.
Civilized, articulate, short on explicit violence and long on solid craftsmanship, this late book in the series will give pleasure to long-time readers.
For those, perhaps attracted by the excellent TV series of some years back, this offering should be no disappointment. The narrator, I imagine, has had a longer engagement with these characters than anyone but the late author. His reading reinforces the different characteristics of the two leading characters and offers none of the failed efforts of some to reproduce male and female voices with verisimilitude. He allows the text and subtle variations in intonation to work their magic in the listeners mind.
The plot retains its interest throughout the book without resorting to the complex variations, misplaced psychologizing and ready sex play which bog down the straight ahead story line preferred by the "classic" detective story writers of his era.
Plot It Yourself is a good listen.
I love Michael Pritchard as the narrator of the Nero Wolfe books. This is a good story with interesting characters well drawn and I think Rex Stout got in a few digs about the publishing industry of his time. Well done.
    EXCELLENT WORK
What did you love best about Plot It Yourself?
I love the way Stout manages to trick me every time with his false and real clues. Very Satisfactory
What was one of the most memorable moments of Plot It Yourself?
The dead body with the kitchen knife in the stomach on the sofa
Have you listened to any of Michael Prichards other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Usual high standard maintained
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    The ending

    Another Great One
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would, and have. This has a lot of the classic Nero Wolfe elements, including Archie acting in his element (The world outside the Brownstone), and Wolfe being very much in charge of his castle.
Normally, we see Archie go out and get information or lure someone back to the apartment. In this story we see him doing other things; things normally associated with action roles.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    No, but few do.
If any of the series were to be bade into a movie, I think this would be one of the better candidates.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The one where Archie is the cab with the guy who doesn't want to take Archie to a certain place. The ways Archie shuts down every attempt to get out of it is a highlight of the series for me.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Cry? No. It's not a crying type of book. Every Wolfe book makes me laugh at some point.
    Any additional comments?
There is one nagging question I have, and repeated listenings haven't helped. There is a government representative that turns up several times to ask questions that are clearly hints at the overall plot, but those visits are never explained in any way I've been able to find.

Still enjoy Rex Stout. Can't resist Nero & Archie

Does Nero Wolfe Have a Daughter? Find Out.
This is yet another extremely entertaining and surprising story that will make you laugh out loud at times and be shocked at others. As Wolfe would say, "Very Satisfactory."
You can't really miss with Wolfe
Michael Prichard has Wolfe down to a T. Personally, in my head I hear Archie as being a little more chipper, but that's just my choice. Great story, loads of political intrigue, and a couple of murders...plus we meet Wolfe's adopted daughter!

    Brilliant collection, excellent narrator
Parker Pyne is one statistician you must get acquainted with! Love this collection of short stories. Will become a much listened to audiobook.
Hugh Fraser is perfect pitch as usual.
    Great stories and well read
I do love a good murder mystery (or a few in this case) to listen to and Hugh Fraser reads the Parker Pyne stories brilliantly. Agatha Christie keeps you guessing as always. Entertaining and good value for money.
    Parker Pyne
    Well read by Hugh Fraser
it was really interesting having stories inside a bigger story.
    Easy to listen to
    Parker Pyne Investigates
Very good interesting and varied plots in the different stories linked together with Parker Pyne ? Detective Agency
    Something completely different
I enjoyed these strange tales, out of the usual Christie mould. Needless to say they are unlikely stories, but ingenious and a nice change from middle class murders.
