    A great miss Marley
Not the best story by chistie but very well read. It important to have the right voice, and she does.
    Excellent
Agatha Christie as ingenious as ever. Great plot and keeps the mind ticking. The book is very well read too.
    Classic Christie.
Timeless Christie classic. Excellent narration by Stephanie Cole. More twists than a teally twisty thing.
Another great investigation by Miss Marple
Well told by Stephanie Cole, good characterisation too for all the persons. Bit of a struggle to see how the real culprit was detected but as a true Marple fan I didn't mind that.
    Brilliant Body in The Library
Characters, actions and attitudes obviously somewhat of their time, the late 1940s /early 1950s of Mr Gove's imagination, but an ingenious, well told story for all that.
For me, Joan Hickson IS Miss Marple, so I was a bit doubtful about buying this reading by Stephanie Cole, but SC is brilliant and, from a technical point of view, actually a better reader. Thoroughly recommended.

    classic poirot twists and turns
Hugh Fraser reads beautifully and this story is classic Agatha Christie with lots of red herrings and twists and turns. My one comment to audible.com is that around the 2.5 hour mark there was about 10 seconds of technical glitchery in which every second syllable was garbled.
    Otherwise really really great.
A superb mystery superbly read by Hugh Fraser
This Agatha Christie novel is read by Hugh Fraser who plays Captain Hastings in the TV series Poirot. His talent of bringing the dialogues to life is outstanding. His ability to sound like Poirot, Inspector Japp, Captain Hastings and variety of female characters, as well as his ability to imitate various accents makes you feel you can see the protagonists in your mind's eye. This is a hugely enjoyable plot, with the usual Agatha Christie twists and turns, that keep you guessing to the end.
A real treat, and I will certainly be buying more books read by Hugh Fraser.

    Abridging books is like amputation.
This is one of my favorite books ever. This acted out performance of it is an amputation of it's most delightful parts. Ouch!
Somewhere someone should do an audible book of Murder Must Advertise. This is an unfortunate cousin with its toes cut off at the knee.
    London in the 1920's
Ever wonder what London was like in the 1920's? D. Sayers has given us a magnificent view with Lord Peter posing as Death Bredon, his lookalike relative, secretly investigating a murder at an advertising agency. Lots of suspects, loose glitterati, and wild drug parties, not to mention funny ads in newspapers. The audio is clear as a bell and the acting will keep you on the edge of your seat. Great sound effects make this a tremendous buy. Thanks Audible, for giving us Ian Carmichael at his very best. Now for the next audio program in this series?
    Great Golden Age Fun!
What did you like about this audiobook?
The cast, led by Ian Carmichael was fantastic! Some readers may need to be reminded that this is a radio adaptation rather than a traditional audiobook, but it works beautifully.
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
Dorothy Sayers wrote mysteries that are always fun even if some of the attitudes are a bit dated, they hold up well overall.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
    Nothing. The cast was superb!
Do you have any additional comments?
Some of the jokes about the advertising industry are still true today even though the book is from 1933. Great fun! Audible, the BBC did a whole series of these productions. At present, you only have one other which I have already downloaded. Please get some more!!
    Simplified but very good anyway
The book is an old friend, and this dramatization is well-done. But I miss the parts left out--necessarily, as most are too visual.
    Outstanding as always!
Where does Murder Must Advertise (Dramatized) rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Thoroughly enjoy BBC Radio productions and their work with Dorothy L. Sayers "Lord Peter Wimsey" is no exception. Ian Carmichael IS Wimsey (just as David Suchet IS Poirot).
    Excellent!

When murder upsets the creative tranquility of an artists' colony, Scotland Yard sends in its most famous investigator. And what begins as a routine case turns out to be the most momentous of Roderick Alleyn's career. For before he can corner the killer, his heart is captured by one of the suspects, the flashing-eyed painter Agatha Troy, who has nothing but scorn for the art of detection.

"Artists in Crime is Miss Marsh's best....Her touch is light, without lapsing into the facetious, her characterization excellent; her plot neat and precise." (Spectator)
    Members Reviews:
    Great Classic Mystery
Ngaio Marsh was a better writer than Agatha Christie and created one of the early English aristocratic detectives. Urbane and self-effacing, Roderick Alleyn still stands up well against Elizabeth George's and Martha Grimes' modern examples.
"Artists in Crime" is one of the important series stories, as it introduces the character who will become the inspector's wife. A classic British whodunit from the 1930's, this is an ideal listen for those who appreciate the genre.
Nadia May has the perfect clear, crisp, no-nonsense voice for this kind of book. If you haven't yet discovered Marsh, this is a good place to begin.
    Elegant Golden Age Mystery
    Any additional comments?
Ngaio Marsh creates another closed community, in this case, a group of artists studying together, in which disparate characters with outsized personalities and flaws compete for the reader's suspicions. The writing is a pleasure with both description and dialogue creating a vivid multi-layered fictional world. The narrator is superlative.
    Loved it.
I've become enamored with Nagio Marsh having stumbled into listening to her books. If you like a good mystery with likeable characters and just the right number of clues, then you will like this book.
They are all "just" painters, or are they?
This happens to be my favorite detective, (at this time) It has been my privilege to read these books. Now I am going to lie back in the hammock, enjoy the beautiful weather, and LISTEN!
Not the best, but can't be missed in the series
This is not my favorite book in the series, but it is an important one to help establish background for later ones. I highly encourage the audience to read or listen to this series in order to avoid confusion and often characters re-appear in later books.
Overall this book is a nice classic mystery and fans of this age of mystery will enjoy it. I first started reading this series based on a recommendation for Agatha Christie fans and I have been hooked ever since. I have read and/or listened to many of the books multiple times.
The plot of this one runs from slow to medium but is well constructed if a bit overdramatic for my tastes. The biggest issue for me though is that I am not a huge fan of Nadia May's narration of this series. I much prefer James Saxon and I have a harder time staying engaged with her reading. The characters in this story are also harder to like, even the ones who reappear and I like much better later in the series. If this had been my first introduction to Marsh I am not sure I would have kept going, but being as it is the 6th book in the series (which I read in order), I kept reading.

"The Maltese Falcon is not only probably the best detective story we have ever read, it is an exceedingly well written novel." (The Times Literary Supplement)
"Hammett's prose [is] clean and entirely unique. His characters [are] as sharply and economically defined as any in American fiction." (The New York Times)
"William Dufris is a one-man band, covering the entire cast of diverse characters with unbelievable ease....just short of amazing." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    A little overacted
Good book and great story. The narrator was good and the audio quality was good. Only one problem - the narrator REALLY overacted the women's parts. In fact, he carried on so much, I fast forwarded through a couple of sections because it got so nerve-rattling.
    Play it again, Sam.
The audiobook of the Maltese Falcon exceeded my expectations. It was richer, and more detailed than the movie (in which Bogie played Sam Spade). The femme fatale is wonderfully portrayed, as is the treacherous Joel Cairo. This is the first time I have heard an American reader carry off multiple voices and characters. Usually the 'dipthong drift' which characterises Amer-English makes the voices too whiney and insubstantial when compared, for example, with Richard Burton or Derek Jacobi. But this book is the exception. The voice of Cairo (Peter Lorrie in the movie) is delightful, as if the actor himself, dead all these years, had come back.
Listening to the audiobook also made me realise how much 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit ?' owed to the book, rather than the movie. The mental images created are very strong in this novel, the characters so stereotypical or 'characaturised' as to be almost cartoonish, but in an entertaining way, and in a style which reflected the 1940's I suppose.
This might be the best audiobook I have heard so far. Strongly recommended, but you do have to pay attention !
    A Nice Rendition
Most people have seen the movie (often more than once) and many have read the book, so what's new and worthwhile about this audio book? The narrator, for one. William Dufris does a fine job with this book. He doesn't try to make Sam Spade sound like Humphrey Bogart--a wise choice. After all, the Sam Spade in the book (blond hair, somewhat satanic smiling features) isn't like Bogart's character at all. At the same time, he does an excellent imitation of the film versions of Cairo and Gutman. All in all, it was fun to listen to. The story stands on its own merits: classic hard-boiled detective fiction. If you're looking for good entertainment, this is is.
    Gritty, Deceptive, Wonderful!
I had seen the movie (the 1941 remake, never the original) years ago but had vague recollections of the story. Being older now, I have a much higher respect for Mr. Hammett's writing style as well as a deeper understanding of the plot. The book was ever bit as good as the movie, if not better.

    The Leper of Saint Giles
    Good. Moderately enteraining.
    Another great listen!
    Any additional comments?
I have been slowly going through the BC series, and have enjoyed them all thus far. But I want to comment specifically on the reader, Joanna Ward. There have been some comments on this, and other BC books, about her being a bad choice. I have to strongly disagree. Of the readers I have heard so far, she is clearly the top one. Her ability to add Welsh inflections, where needed, are terrific, and her male/female character voices are as good as anybody else's given that any reader, male or female, is going to be challenged to sound authentic doing the "other sex".
I have just started "Virgin in the Ice", and the reader (Vanessa Benjamin, I believe) is already bothering me immensely.
I wish that Joanna Ward had read them all.
Another well written Brother Cadfael mystery
What made the experience of listening to The Leper of Saint Giles the most enjoyable?
    Well written story; well told
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
While the plot is good; the enjoyment for me is in the telling.
What does Joanna Ward bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Like many peiople I
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
The whole series gives a wonderful picture of 14th century England. It is also provides a peep into customs, religion and the basics of forensics and criminal psychology. Reading in chronological order provides a good insight into a civil war not often written about.
    Why was this narrator chosen?
I have read all of the Brother Cadfael books in French as well as English, and am a solid fan of this author and series.
While I enjoyed the accent of this narrator, however, and her skill, her efforts to convey male voices failed in my view (as a function of her voice capabilities), with the unfortunate and unintended consequence of making all of these characters (and almost all characters are male of course) sound pompous and self-important. I have much preferred male narrators for this series.
    No mystery at all
Well-narrated, but this murder was no mystery at all.

    Abridged is not as sweet
When I read the print version about 20 years ago, I thought it one of the best novels I had come across. I think the audio version's "brilliant re-creation of the 14th century" and plot suffer in abridgement, or perhaps there are just other good historical novels out there these days to compare.
The narration is good and the story is easy to follow, however - and an abridged rose is still sweeter than none.
Good enough to make me wish it were unabridged
This book -- what I heard of it -- was both an excellent mystery novel and, at a deeper level, a fascinating exploration of the way that piety can beget sin and a love of the truth can beget anti-intellectualism. The narrator did an excellent job, particularly with the German and Italian accents (though the British one could have used some help, I thought). I can't address how much is lost in the abridgement, but I do wish an unabridged version had been available -- especially now that I've heard this version. I have the book on my shelf and based on its length it seems that a great deal must be missing. On the other hand, that book has been on my shelf, unread, for some time, and I suppose the abridged version must be pretty good on its own merits if it left me wanting more.
And Excellent Book, A poor Audio
This is an outstanding and complex work. It deserves to be released unabridged. So much is lost in an abridgment that it isn't worth listening to. If you are interested in what was one of the few best sellers deserving that status, read the book. If you want to listen, then wait until it is available unabridged. An abridgement is a waste of money.
    Abridged? Really???
Would you try another book from Umberto Eco and/or Theodore Bikel?
Yes and Yes! This is one of my favorite books, and Theodore Bikel does a marvelous job bringing Adso to life. His accent and delivery are enthralling!
The only problem is that this version is abridged.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I love this book! The story is gripping
Have you listened to any of Theodore Bikels other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first, but I loved his performance and will look for more!
Did The Name of the Rose inspire you to do anything?
Since this book is Eco's fictional take on his philosophies on semiotics, I was inspired to read more about semiotics.
    Any additional comments?
Only problem with this book is that it's abridged! Which is terrible. Several of my favorite passages were missing!
    Great for night-time listening!
I purchased this novel based on some vague memories of the old Sean Connery movie. I was not disappointed. A very fast, suspensful listen. Imagine Sherlock Holmes as an Italian Monk and you've got the idea.

    Publisher's Summary:
A "very short Catholic priest" who does "...not seem to know which was the right end of his return ticket," Father Brown is the embodiment of the phrase 'looks can be deceiving.' Arguably the second best-known crime-solver in English literature, this unassuming man of the cloth solves case after case with ease. Collected here are some of his best, including: "The Blue Cross," "The Secret Garden," "The Queer Fleet," "The Flying Stars," "The Invisible Man," "The Honor of Israel Gow," "The Wrong Shape," "The Sins of Prince Saradine," "The Hammer of God," "The Eye of Apollo," "The Sign of the Broken Sword," and "The Three Tools of Death."
    Editorial Reviews:
Unlike deductive Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown uses intuition to get to the bottom of a crime. He is a Catholic priest after all and in these unusual detective stories, God ensures that good triumphs over evil. Listening to John Horton's bass-baritone voice, complete with British accent, is an absolute pleasure. He gives life to a wide array of character, some quiet and reverential, others hard and gruff. Horton's performance adds new depth to these faith-based detective tales.
    Members Reviews:
Unabtrusive Edwardian counterpoint to Sherlock H.
G.K. Chesterton's empathetic little detective seems like an unabtrusive Edwardian counterpoint to Sherlock Holmes. While Sherlock Holmes ability to adapt allows him to escape both time and place (House to Sherlock to Elementary), Father Brown is (like Catholicism itself) almost tied to man's fallen state and the early 20th century.
That being said, there are many of Chesterton's stories which I solidly prefer to Doyle's. Chesterton's prose, his love of paradox, his appreciation for humility, his black humor and his empathy for mankind makes me emotionally connected to Father Brown in ways I never managed with Sherlock Holmes
    Intriguing mysteries, excellent readings
While the audio could be just a little clearer (otherwise, 5 stars), this first set of Father Brown stories have been enjoyed by our whole family.
    Enjoyable but curious
Loved this. It gives additional insight to the character of the TV series, as well as the true nature of Flambeau. Plus, the stories are quite entertaining.
    Imaginative
Quite an interesting turn for C K Chesterton! Never is a hint revealed as to the direction the storyline will take. Chesterton, in all his use of language, makes each moment an anticipation for the next.
I love bits of this collection of stories
I really wanted to like this. I love G.K Chesterton and his character Father Brown are men who lived their faith in a glorious way. But the audio quality was terrible. And I think the stories are a bit too dated. And the racist words that pepper the occasional story (back then were not objectionable) offended me as I listened. I wish someone would take these stories and modernize them, there is some good stuff in there that is mired in antiquity that just feels stale and sometimes offensive.

Experience Chandler's cool wit and taut language as his most famous character travels through the sunbaked streets of Southern California, unraveling a tangled web of murder and deception. Elliott Gould, who played Marlowe in Robert Altman's film version of The Long Goodbye, once again brings L.A.'s toughest private eye to life. Gould captures the distinctive combination of cynicism and gruff compassion that have made Marlowe one of America's favorite fictional heroes.
    Critic Reviews:

    Members Reviews:
    Not Chandler's best. Convoluted plot.
Chandler fans (like me) will enjoy this book, however, it is not the author's best work. This novel is not as witty or compelling as his other stories. The plot is complicated and difficult to follow. Even after repeated listenings I still have trouble following which character is suspected of what. That confusion left this reader a bit bored.
If you are new to Chandler and want to try something, then I recommend skipping this book, and instead try Chandler's short stories. They are much better,
    Elliott Gould's narration is amazing.
    Gould is flawless
So often audiobooks are over acted. Gould is understated without being dead. Hard not to hear him as altman's Marlowe, though, who is very different than Chandler's, I think. It complicated the experience but made it much richer, and gave a lot to think about
