It is Egypt in 2000 BC, where death gives meaning to life. At the foot of a cliff lies the broken, twisted body of Nofret, concubine to a ka-priest. Young, beautiful, and venomous, most agree that it was fate - she deserved to die like a snake!
But at her father's house on the banks of the Nile, the priest's daughter Renisenb believes that the woman's death is suspicious. Increasingly, she becomes convinced that the source of evil lurks within their household - and watches helplessly as the family's passions explode in murder.

    Very different
An interesting and unexpected story from the queen of mystery. The story is set in ancient Egypt, which for some reason removes a bit of the charm that is usual in her books. I would still recommend this book to any Agatha Christie fans
Classic Christie with an authentic Egyptian twist
What made the experience of listening to Death Comes as the End the most enjoyable?
Christie gets the details of Egyptian life right! From Ka priests, to the names of people, to the descriptions of life on the Nile, she really did her research here.
After listening to this, I also found out that her husband was an Egyptologist, so I guess that helped =)
    Egypt rivals England
A great story once I embraced Agatha's departure to ancient Egypt and could recognize the characters' names!
    Intriguing
I really enjoyed this book set in Egyptian time. It has great characters and holds the interest until the end. Another great work by Christie!
    Enjoyed it!
Not the usual period work by Agatha Christie but just as enjoyable. Definitely one of my favourites

    Started out great
...with some really fun characters, but then it just started to ramble, losing the fine construction most Christie mysteries are known for, and soon became more of a steamy romance novel than a detective mystery. I finished it but had lost interest in it long before the last chapter.
    Too much
This just seemed a bit too much. A combination of the narration and writing, the characters were so trite and cloying. Simple adventurous girl, mysterious man, daring police, and conniving villain all on a boat to Africa.
    Prototypic Christie
I enjoyed the story but didn't care for some of the voices employed by the narrator for different characters.
    awful narration of male voices
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The only readers who might like this story are those who have a goal of listening to every Agatha Christie novel available. This one is a girl's own adventure, written with a running commentary about what similar heroines in the movies would do. It is not one the author's better efforts.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The theme of the bold, unprotected young woman off on an adventure to South Africa and what was then Rhodesia by rail and steamship had some moments, but the author 's approach of relating the story through the journal entries of two of the characters was ineffective and at times annoying.
How could the performance have been better?
Novels read by a single author almost always suffer a bit when the narrator does characters of the opposite sex. I have had listen to some pretty strange woman's voices when male narrators lack the ability to do female voices adequately. But this female narrator's efforts to perform the male parts of this novel were the worst screechings I have ever heard. She tried to mimic a "gruff" male voice for the journal entries of a male character that constitute almost half the novel. The result was terrible. This is a bit surprising because her voices and readings for the female characters were generally good. But I tried to get though this audiobook twice and couldn't stick it out to the end either time because the male voices were so bad. Perhaps the narrator should compare her performance to Joan Hickson's narration of a Miss Marple novel. Hickson does not try to imitate a male voice; she just uses a small variation in order to indicate a male voice. Likewise, male narrators who use a slightly higher voice for a female character instead of a falsetto seem to me much successful. After all, this is narration of a novel, not a one-person radio drama. Most readers accept the difference and buy accordingly. Few narrators are talented enough to correctly mimic a wide range of male and female voices, and this narrator is not the exception. The narrator could do much better.

    Christie at her worst
Hugh Fraser did a stellar job of reading the most disappointing Christie novel I've encountered. I've enjoyed most of her books, so I was quite surprised. This should have been a short story but was padded out to novel length by annoying and irrelevant chit chat between Tommy and Tuppence. Even that sounds as if it could possibly be charming, but it is not, it is maddening. They find a clue and, instead of examining it, start a discussion on dinner or whether they had washed up yet...I wanted to pull my hair out. Small, insignificant details are discussed repeatedly.
Possibly my favorite of this series.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
After reading reviews, I almost missed out on this wonderful book. My favorite part of the whole series is Tommy and Tuppence's interactions with each other, and this book made me laugh a lot (though not as much as "Partners in Crime").
I'm really sad that there aren't more books in the Tommy and Tuppence series, they became instant favorites. I will probably re-listen to these last two the most, because I love the matured relationship of these characters and old Albert.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tuppence. Her spunk, wit, and tenacity -among other things. :)
What does Hugh Fraser bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I LOVE Hugh Frazer's performances. I would almost buy a book just to keep listening to him.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed a lot, especially at Tuppence's experiences with True Love and Matilda's surgery.
    Boring
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I enjoy listening to Hugh Fraser but I didn't care for the story itself
What could Agatha Christie have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
not to my taste...that's not to say other Christie fans shouldn't give it a try
    Dull reading.
Would you try another book from Agatha Christie and/or Hugh Fraser?
Christie can be simplistic, but the reading on this made it soporific. Much preferred Nadia May's reading of The Secret Adversary.

    A Christie country mystery
As with all Agatha Christie mysteries, the solution to the mystery isn't revealed until the end. The clues lead round and round as the sleuth peels away the superficial covering laid down by the murderer.
The charm underlying this story is of young romance, honor, and destiny.
Readers who enjoy a diversion into last-century English country life should find this story a nice vacation from 21st century concerns.
    Entertaining with Twists and Turns
I enjoyed the characters in Murder Is Easy, though Christie again adds one of those love at first sight subplots that I find hard to accept. The plot twists keep you guessing until the end. This is sometimes billed as a Superintendent Battle story but be warned, he only shows up in the last chapter or two and is really an afterthought. Any Superintendent would have done the job.
    Christie at her best
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, because the performance was great, and this was one of Christie's better works. The plot was tighter, and I thought I knew "whodunit" long before the end, but I was wrong...which was fun!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder Is Easy?
The end when you find out who the murderer is!
What about Hugh Frasers performance did you like?
    Everything! He's a brilliant performer.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I really enjoyed this work. Christie's plots seemed to get looser as she continued to write, but this one was very tightly written and had a good twist at the end.
    Another Christie Surprise Ending
Whether you are a longtime fan or a first time reader, I think you will find the characters and plot and setting an enjoyable adventure.
    Is this really Agatha Christie?
Hugh Fraser did his usual good job of narrating, but the story itself was predictable, the characters not at all compelling and their dialogue dull. So unlike all other Christie books I've read.

Six people sit down to a sumptuous meal at a table laid for seven. In front of the empty place is a sprig of rosemary - "rosemary for remembrance." A strange sentiment considering no one is likely to forget the night, exactly a year ago, that Rosemary Barton died at exactly the same table, her beautiful face unrecognizable, convulsed with pain and horror.
But then Rosemary had always been memorable - she had the ability to arouse strong passions in most people she met. In one case, strong enough to kill....

poor resolution to an interesting mystery
This is a different type of Christie story for me, as almost half of it takes place in the past - remembered by characters and explained in exposition - rather than actively happening. That made for a different feel to the story, but it's a good story nonetheless: A year ago, a young socialite married to an older man dies of cyanide poisoning at a restaurant, and it is declared a suicide. Almost a year later, her husband gets a note stating that it was actually a murder, and at the birthday dinner at the same restaurant for the dead woman's sister, he ends up dying of cyanide poisoning himself. Was it suicide from grief? Was the note correct or a red herring? Was his death also a murder?
All good questions and a plot for a good mystery, but the resulting solution is weak and unworthy of the setup, IMO.
    What an enjoyable listen!
The ending is a little too improbable but in general, this was a very enjoyable and fun book! I absolutely love Agatha Christie's works. And High Fraser is the BEST narrator for her books!
This is one of Agatha Christie's finest works.
Hugh Fraser is excellent as always.
Sparkling Cyanide is riveting and hard to put down. There are several twists and turns, and the murderer is not easily identified. The clues are subtle.
    Typical Agatha Christie
I figured out who before the end, but not why. Christie is a master at that
    Clever !
Great characters and clever plot! This book is a quick and entertaining read. You can always count on Christie to deliver!

    overlong paragraphs
Ms. Solomons has the talent to be a major writer but she has to work with an editor who will get her to reduce the size of her paragraphs so that she conveys the essence of her story and the reader feels relaxed hearing her story as a book at bedtime. She has a powerful imagination and she writes very well but there are too many mental leaps for me.
    for example
Kit shrugged, and began to follow Mr.Wrexham out of the hall and along the service corridor leading to the back pantry.I watched them for a second, and then, not caring if I was to be scolded later, called out,'Mr. Wrexham?'
The reader has to visualise the hall and then the service corridor and further the back pantry.
in fact it is the call to Mr. Wrexham which is the important point and not the route from hall to
    to back pantry.
Seconding the review by John Seifert
I've read half a dozen of Vargas' Adamsberg stories by now and have to say that the plausibility of the story is often a bit or more than a bit far fetched.

    Publisher's Summary:
In Olen Steinhauers bestseller The Tourist, reluctant CIA agent Milo Weaver uncovered a conspiracy linking the Chinese government to the highest reaches of the American intelligence community, including his own Department of Tourism - the most clandestine department in the Company. The shocking blowback arrived in the Hammett Award-winning The Nearest Exit when the Department of Tourism was almost completely wiped out as the result of an even more insidious plot.
Following on the heels of these two spectacular novels comes An American Spy, Olen Steinhauers most stunning thriller yet. With only a handful of tourists - CIA-trained assassins - left, Weaver would like to move on and use this as an opportunity to regain a normal life, a life focused on his family. His former boss in the CIA, Alan Drummond, cant let it go. When Alan uses one of Milos compromised aliases to travel to London and then disappears, calling all kinds of attention to his actions, Milo cant help but go in search of him. Worse still, it's beginning to look as if Tourism's enemies are gearing up for a final, fatal blow.
With An American Spy, Olen Steinhauer, by far the best espionage writer in a generation, delivers a searing international thriller that will settle once and for all who is pulling the strings and who is being played.

    Very complicated
There are many, many characters in this book and the story is quite complicated. It helped to have re-read The Nearest Exit just before embarking on the "listen"; however, I still found the book quite difficult to follow as a listener. I expect that the book would be a very satisfying "read" because, when confused, I could have gone back to review previous chapters. This being said, I enjoy a good puzzle and An American Spy is one of these. Mr. Pittu is an excellent narrator, making this audiobook one of the best performances I have heard this year.

This book is well written, has an excellent and consistently engaging plot and piles a few more layers of personality on the fictional portrait of Milo. Excellent story
I loved this story the whole time I was trying to work out who committed the crime. Highly recommend this book.
    Jolly good!
    Any additional comments?
Firstly, the actual story is a good one. This is one of the few Christie novels to have never recieved any adaptation and (don't worry, no spoilers) I can see why, the ending is a little strange. It has a slightly different scope to the other Christie novels I've read, seeming in my opinion, much more self contained. But it kept me gripped and listening intently!
Hugh Fraser reads it brilliantly and has a lovely tone of voice. At times he reminded me of Stephen Fry.
Addictive, just like any other Christie
Have you listened to any of Hugh Frasers other performances? How does this one compare?
Hugh Fraser has become the definitive narrator for Christie's work to me. This one was wonderful as always.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I initially wasn't completely hooked. But the story gets better and better and I definitely didn't want to put it down after a while.
    A cracking story
Once again Agatha Christie tells a cracking good tale with plenty of twists and turns. Hugh Fraser is so good as a narrator that one soon forgets there is only one person speaking and imagine a whole cast of characters. I heartily recommend this story, especially if on a long train journey.
    The victim is the hero
The 87yr old Greek immigrant and wheeler dealer Aristide Leonides, ugly, undersized but charming and generous (within limits) is murdered. He has lived in comfort in a London suburb made fashionable by his presence (with his county first wife) in a house he has built, much despised by the old establishment. He doesnt give a ***!
He isnt bothered by the reactions of his family or wider society to his very late second marriage, at 78, after a long widowhood, to a woman in her 20s who worked in a tea shop.
    Hes nobodys fool.
Unfortunately his wealth and the corruption of English mores of that time in the rich, undereducated classes result, indirectly, in his poisoning.
It is unusual for Christie to paint such a positive (albeit nuanced) portrayal of anyone not English- we must allow Poirot, but she got sick of him!
It is also unusual for her to describe characters who can function without servants, who must be either robotic (Good) or impertinent (I.e. human = bad). Normally Christie characters are incapable of existing without unearned income- how could anyone expect the poor dears to WORK for a living! No wonder the males retain military titles from short service in 14-18 or 39-45, even if of rather lowly officer rank. Captain or Major après-guerre looks like an admission of failure!
For once, the victim is someone I might have liked, if not approved of, someone with substance. A wonderful change from all those stories of wet chinless inbred inept English aristos, and nasty foreigners.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best seller Dana Stabenow returns with her most outstanding novel yet, teaming up two of her most beloved characters, Aleut private investigator Kate Shugak and Alaska state trooper Liam Campbell, in the same story for the first time.
Alaska aviation entrepreneur Finn Grant died in the fiery crash of his Piper Super Cub. Someone sabotaged his engine, and virtually everyone in southwestern Alaska has a motive, including his betrayed wife, his bullied children, and Liams wife, bush pilot Wyanet Chouinard. With few places to turn, Liam asks his former mentor Niniltna post commander Sergeant Jim Chopin, for help, and Jim quickly brings Kate onto the case.
Working undercover as - of all things - a waitress at Bills Bar and Grill, Kate learns over beer and burgers that Grants business had expanded meteorically over the last two years. After buying the closed Air Force base south of town from the federal government at a bargain-basement price, he became a fixed-base operator running his fishing, hunting, and flight-seeing business, servicing planes flying through the area, and most interestingly and lucratively, getting into the air freight business. But what kind of freight was he moving, and where? The answers involve Kate in her most challenging case to date, one that starts with murder and quickly sprawls into a much larger conspiracy ranging from the darkest family secrets to treason and beyond. Restless in the Grave is a treat for fans and another outstanding addition to Dana Stabenows acclaimed and award-winning series.

    Kate Shugak plus Liam Campbell!
In this primarily Kate Shugak story, Liam Campbell plays an important role, and we get a chance along the way to learn a bit of the Campbell back story that we hadn't gotten yet. The story overall takes place primarily in Campbell's town and revolves around the death of a pilot that turns out not to be an accident. Liam asks Kate (and Mutt, of course) to investigate because Liam's wife, Wyanet Chouinard, is a prime suspect.
The dead pilot, Finn Grant, was a thoroughly unpleasant person with no shortage of suspects for his death, but someone doesn't want Kate to investigate, apparently, since she is attacked almost immediately upon arrival and stuffed in a chest freezer. With Mutt!
Overall, an excellent addition to the Kate Shugak series. Very well read by Marguerite Gavin, as are all the Kate Shugak books. Highly recommended.
Good story but recorded at wrong speed
After reading others in this series, the characters are like family, the stories of Alaska along with a bit of mystery, usually great fun but this was hard to listen to and enjoy because of the speed. I know this reader and how she usually portrays these characters and I don't think she could possibly read this fast. The characters voices were distorted. Couldn't this be slowed down to a normal pace?
Wish The Narrator didn't speak so fast
Would you listen to Restless in the Grave again? Why?

    Publisher's Summary:
Max Tudor has adapted well to his post as vicar of St. Edwold's in the idyllic village of Nether Monkslip. The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. But this new-found serenity is quickly shattered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women's Institute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max's training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play. As the investigation unfolds, Max becomes more intricately involved. Memories he'd rather not revisit are stirred, evoking the demons from the past which led him to Nether Monkslip.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Agatha Awardwinning author Malliet (
Death of a Cozy Writer) debuts a superb new series... Youll marvel at the authors low-key humor and crystal-clear depictions of small-town life... Malliet, like Louise Penny, brings a contemporary freshness to the traditional mystery." (
    Library Journal)
"Malliet has mastered the delights of the cozy mystery so completely that she seems to be channeling Agatha Christie... with a hero who adds sex appeal to the mix... includes snippets of ironic humor...making the story even more delicious...winning." (
    Booklist)
"[A]n authentic village mystery that also pokes fun at the conventions...Malliet deftly juggles all of her characters...the murder plot here is quite devious and the motive quite evil.... The author provides a story that works on several levels, including the pleasure of a visit to a traditional English village." (
    January magazine)

A Classic Cozy English Village Mystery
I really enjoyed this first book in the Max Tudor mystery series for its dry, witty sense of humor. The writing is subtle, urbane and insightful. The whole story is full of small insular village flavor with a cast of wacky and often strange characters.
Be aware that to me this is a full blown cozy. So don't expect edge of your seat suspense and over the top violence. What you will find is a comfortable (within the limits that this is a murder mystery) listen that easily engages and entertains. Very like Agatha Christie comes to the modern world as a Anglican Priest.
I am looking forward to continuing the series with book two as a winter listen.
    Too Many Sermons
A lot of the characters are caricatures: the vegetarian, the independent femme fatale etc.
There is quite a lot of preaching about tolerance of difference which I found utterly tedious. The narrator is superb and wasted on such drivel. The author plays it too safe and endeavours to convert the reader to political correctness. A great setting and a fun idea for a cozy but the fearful and timid writing destroyed what it had the potential to offer.
    Brilliant, but not for everybody
I loved Wicked Autumn, but some may find the writing too literary and the British reader too stuffy. I enjoyed the characters and the setting and found the prose brilliant. When I first started listening, I wasn't able to concentrate to follow the rhythm and accent of the reader, and it doesn't help that they start with the list of character descriptions, which I think was a mistake. However, when I restarted I was completely drawn in and loved the intelligent and elegant prose and the uptight British reserve.
