Agatha Christie's most famous murder mystery, read by the inimitable Dan Stevens.
Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside.
Isolated and with a killer in their midst, detective Hercule Poirot must identify the murderer - in case he or she decides to strike again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Need it be said - the little grey cells solve once more the seemingly insoluble. Mrs Christie makes an improbable tale very real, and keeps her readers enthralled and guessing to the end." (Times Literary Supplement)"A brilliantly ingenious story." (Dorothy L. Sayers, Daily Herald)"Ingenuity at its height the idea is utterly novel, the setting a model of realism, and the characters a versatile, attractive crew." (Woman's Journal)"A piece of classic workmanship... exquisite and wholly satisfying." (News Chronicle)

One of AC's best w the best narrator
There isn't anything I can say abt this celebrated novel that hasn't already been said. So I will concentrate on the narrator. Dan Stevens is fantastic. It sounded like a full cast of multiple ppl instead of one narrator. absolutely worth every penny.
    my first detective book

    Excellent story & Narrator
I really enjoyed listing to this audiobook - Dan Stevens has a lovely voice and the story is very enjoyable.
Was a bit of a let down
Started off great but had a really disappointing ending. The last 90 minutes were a let down
Great fun as my first Agatha Christie read
My very first Agatha Christie. Didn't know what to expect! Definitely not your standard "who done it". Great story and presentation of the characters.
Voice acting by Dan Stevens was great! For an Englishman he spent a lot of time doing French and American accents. Really enjoyed it :)

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Georges Simenon's tragic tale of lost identity, translated by David Coward as part of the new Penguin Maigret series.
What was the woman doing here? In a stable, wearing pearl earrings, her stylish bracelet and white buckskin shoes! She must have been alive when she got there because the crime had been committed after ten in the evening. But how? And why? And no one had heard a thing! She had not screamed. The two carters had not woken up.
Inspector Maigret is standing in the pouring rain by a canal. A well-dressed woman, Mary Lampson, has been found strangled in a stable nearby. Why did her glamorous, hedonistic life come to such a brutal end here? Surely her taciturn husband Sir Walter knows - or maybe the answers lie with the crew of the barge La Providence.
Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.
David Coward is Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Leeds, England, and an award- winning translator of numerous works from French.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Compelling, remorseless, brilliant" (John Gray)
"One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century... Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories." (Guardian)
"A supreme writer... unforgettable vividness." (Independent)

    Publisher's Summary:
Miss Silver joins a friend from Scotland Yard to investigate a suspicious suicide.
Frank Abbotts vacations never last very long, and his trip to Field End is no exception. He has hardly enjoyed a moment of Jonathan Fields hospitality before tragedy strikes. A niece ventures into old Jonathans study at night to ask him a question, and finds him stone cold with a revolver by his hand. An obvious suicide, it seems, but Inspector Abbott is not so sure.
He asks his friend Maud Silver, the brilliant detective, for assistance. She agrees it must be murder. But who is the killer? Assisting their investigation is the dead mans strange habit of fingerprinting all who come to visit. But there are fingerprints all over the house, and solving this murder will require Miss Silvers particularly delicate touch.
    Members Reviews:
No clues except for an old fingerprint
Although first published in 1959, The Fingerprint feels as if it was written in the forties. Tea rationing is mentioned more than once, so the plot must be set before 1952, when the rationing of tea was lifted in Britain. But aside from that, the story has a satisfying Golden Age ambiance, thanks to the country house setting; the ingenuity of the plot; the focus on wealth and inheritance; the moderate level of violence; and the outmoded wardrobe of the elderly investigator Miss Maud Silver.
The reader need not wait long for the murder. Jonathan Field is shot dead in his study while pouring over a volume of fingerprints. Collecting fingerprints has been his hobby for years, and some owner of the one of the prints may be sorry Field has them. The police suspect that Field's intrusive hobby my have been the death of him. Another possible motive arises from Field's sudden decision to change his will. Detective Inspector Frank Abbott must consider every possibility, especially since Miss Silver's services have been retained by one of the suspects. Miss Silver never stands for hasty conclusions -- and always has a quote from Tennyson to back her up.
Any fan of the Miss Silver mysteries should relish The Fingerprint. Patricia Wentworth keeps us guessing long enough to make the puzzle engaging (although the solution gets pretty clear in the last quarter of the book). And Wentworth more than satisfies our expectation of romantic entanglements with two sets of lovers and a broken heart or two besides. Furthermore, a delightful character from a previous book reappears: the young bedridden Maggie Bell, who alleviates her pain and boredom by listening in on the party line. You can imagine how useful Miss Silver finds this...
The Fingerprint is a bit harder to get than most of the Miss Silver mysteries. All the more reason to get it!
    The same and yet different
The 30th book in a 32-book series of cozy mid-century mysteries is better than its two predecessors, though far from perfect. The basic format of each book is this: take one large country house, plenty of inhabitants, an overdose of gossip, a couple of pairs of lovers who aren't yet at the home stretch. Fold in spite, anger, jealousy, perhaps an anonymous letter, and revised wills. Add a dash of red herrings. Bake until murder is achieved, then bring in Miss Maud Silver, retired governess and current private enquiry agent to cut into the pie and reveal the truth. A lot of the plot devices, apart from the basics, have been used before.

Kathy , Kathy, Kathy.. Let it go already, r
A 32 yr old woman goes on and on and on and on about a botched junior high friendship. What would Kathy think, or do , or say! too much filler. Thin story material. Jamie was not likable at the end. Too silly and self-centered. Needed serious editing. More events , much less speculating on kathy's failed nursing career she never bothered about. Enjoyed the first book this one was boring, redundant, repetitive.
    Vintage glass can be deadly!!
In Queensville, Michigan, Jaymie Leighton, enjoys collecting her vintage kitchenware and cookbooks. She has lots of friends, including her ex's fiancé, the family at the local B&B, and a couple of men who are interested in her. But Kathy, her best friend from twenty years ago, still refuses to speak to her and Jaymie has decided it's time to finally clear the air. This can't happen though, because Kathy's body is discovered by Jaymie at the Fourth of July celebration, murdered with Jaymie's beautiful vintage square glass bowl. Everyone in town knows about their situation. Thus begins the search for the killer.
This is the second book in this series and I have found them both very enjoyable. Kathy is spunky and determined in everything she does. The descriptions of the vintage items in the story is excellent and fascinating, including the foods from old cookbooks. The mystery was full of twists and turns, but made total sense in end. Looking forward to the next one. I've been listening to these on audio, which adds a lots to my enjoyment also.
    second best
This story was disappointing because it did not talk enough about her vintage kitchen business. The first one was way better and I don't know if i'll move on to # 3
Good start to a new series
This was a very interesting and quick read. It had interesting characters and a believable plot. I'm looking forward to the next book.
She was Out of Control and Offed by a Bowl
The second in the Vintage Kitchen Mystery Series is a good listen (not quite as good as book one . . . but almost) . . . some reviewers question that a spat in middle school could last so long, but not me . . . pettiness has a long shelf life, unfortunately . . . and as heartbreaking as it is, that's the world we live in . . . Jaymie's desire to make amends with her friend, Kathy, even after all the years had gone by, were admirable and right . . . the brokenness in a young girl's family and home life make permanent scars, and the author portrayed them well in the story . . . I did miss the descriptions of Jaymie's collecting of vintage kitchen items, which were minimal in the second book . . .

    Publisher's Summary:
When Abigail Doorn was wheeled into the operation room at the Dutch Memorial Hospital, her face was strangely blue and bloated. A wire had been tightly wound around her neck. The strongest suspect, because he stood to benefit by the death of this wealthy old woman, was her protégé, the famous Dr. Janney. Just before her death he received a strange caller - one whose name he would not divulge.
Ellery Queen, having come to the hospital to visit his old friend Dr. Minchen, had been present during the time of the murder. He immediately took over the case. Besides the problem of Dr. Janney and his caller, Ellery found himself confronted with still another - why had Abby Doorn and her housekeeper quarreled continuously for twenty years? The housekeeper admitted she hated the old woman, and with a religious fanaticism declared she was an evil old woman who had received only what she deserved.
    Members Reviews:
Good, but not my favorite in series, so far
Abby Doorn, a wealthy old woman who has endowed the local hospital, seems rmuch beloved to most people there. However, she is in a diabetic coma after taking a fall, and they are preparing her for surgery. Alas, they discover she is already dead--by murder, rather than Nature, and so the mystery begins.
This is a good (enough) Ellery and Richard Queen story. But it is not up to the quality of the first two. To begin with, too many coincidences. For example, Ellery Queen, no kind of medical person whatsoever, just happens to have been invited to observe the surgery that would have taken place, thus is right there when murder is discovered. Also, even though the EQ series does typically employ rather two-dimensional characters in it's setup, some of these were too unbelievable and wooden. Finally, for some reason, I didn't quite think the narration of this one measured up to the quality of the first two.
Don't get me wrong. I really like this series. I am old, but somehow am only now getting around to enjoying them. But there seemed a stiffness (no pun intended in a murder mystery) about this one that was a trifle off-putting. I still recommend it, think other readers will enjoy. Especially when taking into consideration that the books are about 80ish years old.
    classic golden age mystery
this is a classic. very well read. 2nd time I've listened to it. Ellery is somewhat prissy but he grows on you. there are others on site. that's my next listen sorted.

    Publisher's Summary:
1955: Canon Sidney Chambers, loveable priest and part-time detective, is back. Accompanied by his faithful Labrador, Dickens, and the increasingly exasperated Inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney is called to investigate the unexpected fall of a Cambridge don from the roof of King's College Chapel; a case of arson at a glamour photographer's studio and the poisoning of Zafar Ali, Grantchester's finest spin bowler.
Alongside his sleuthing, Sidney has other problems. Can he decide between his dear friend the glamorous socialite Amanda Kendall and Hildegard Staunton, the beguiling German widow? To make up his mind Sidney takes a trip abroad, only to find himself trapped in a web of international espionage just as the Berlin Wall is going up.
    Members Reviews:
Good writing, but weak mystery, and awful reader
This is a collection of six short stories, each of which stands on its own, though there are some connections between them, and some characters are present in each story. The protagonist is, of course, Sidney Chambers, a Church of England canon in Grantchester, a bucolic village close to Cambridge University. Sidney's sideline is criminal investigation, via his friendship with Cambridgeshire policeman Geordie Keating.
Sidney is a mild-mannered man, but there is some spice to his life. He has two women in his life: Amanda, his longtime close friend, and Hildegarde, the German widow who he met in the first volume in this series, when her husband was murdered. In this volume, the stories range from the murder of a Muslim grocer to a close shave for Sidney when he visits Hildegarde in Germany just as the Iron Curtain is ringing down.
Author James Runcie is the son of Robert Runcie, the Archbishop of Canterbury in the 1980s, so he comes by his interest in churchmen honestly. In the website about the Sidney Chambers series, he writes that he plans to have six novels in the series, beginning in 1953 and ending in 1978, writing about a period in which there were vast changes in English society.
Runcie's strong suit is his ability to evoke the feel of the village and the university in the 1950s, so soon after the war's end. The book should be a rewarding experience for those who reading for atmosphere and storytelling. The avid mystery reader may be less pleased, because the crimes tend to be solved in a burst of exposition. There isn't the seeding of clues that allows the careful reader to figure out the whodunnit.
Avoid the audiobook! The reader, Peter Wickham, is terrible at women's voices. In particular, he makes Amanda sound like a little old woman, when she's supposed to be a wealthy young society woman.
    Watch the TV series instead
I watched, and loved, the British series Granchester on PBS. I can't wait for more. I had great hopes for the book but they weren't met. BBC has taken a mediocre book and created a wonderful TV show. This book is actually a set of short stories with continuity of the main characters and themes. Sidney Chambers is so different from the James Norton TV character, and I couldn't warm up to him. He is flat and unengaged. In his late 30s, Sidney is naive and a bit of an air head.

"Margery Allingham has worked her way up to a worthy place among the tiny hierarchy of front-rankers in the detective world" (Tatler)
"Spending an evening with Campion is one of life's pure pleasures" (Saturday Review)
"Margery Allingham deserves to be rediscovered" (P.D. James)
    Members Reviews:
OK story with a terrible narrator
This is not Allingham's best - Albert Campion is lost in the middle of Amanda's tumultuous family and hangers-on. The story is convoluted and there are so many characters that are never fully formed. But it is entertaining and inventive. The solution comes a bit from left field, but the ride there is fun.
The narrator, however, does not get a single character correct. Everyone comes across as a dolt, an arrogant prick or so blase that you wonder they take the trouble to breath. This is one of the worst narrations I have listened to with regards to character voices. His pacing, clarity and volume are all fine - interesting since those tend to be bigger problems with other narrators. It was difficult to finish the book.
    Find another narrator
I've read this book before and enjoy the story, but couldn't make it more than 15 minutes with this narrator. He makes Campion sound like a perpetual adolescent, complete with voice breaks and cracks every other sentence. The character must be at least 40 by the time of this story! What's more, the cracking voice was one of the only ways I could tell Campion from many of the female characters. Fun book for fans of Allingham, but find a print copy of another narrator.
    Very disappointed
What disappointed you about The Beckoning Lady?
Performance grossly inappropriate to the characters. Highpitched male voices, females reduced to a gloomy drone.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The character of Charlie Luke has a wonderful richness and depth in the book - turned into a squeaky caricature in this performance
Would you be willing to try another one of David Thorpes performances?
    no
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Beckoning Lady?
I wouldn't cut anything from the story; the book is a marvellous piece of work and one of my all-time favourites. I would cut the narrator.
    Any additional comments?
Margery Allingham must be spinning in her grave
Perfect - Wonderfully crime writer - beautifully read
Full of character and humour - one of Margery Allingham's best.
David Thorpe's characterisation is brilliant. Definitely recommend. The voice of Campion takes a little getting used to - but I think he actually has the voice and character perfect - and his ability to change characters and inflect personality into each one is excellent.

    Members Reviews:
    Not That Easy
I thought I knew who was the murder, wrong! I loved sitting and having my coffee and listening to this radio show. Great performance by the actors enjoyed a great deal.
    Really interesting short story
It was a good mystery, I liked the conclusion, everything was summed up pretty nicely.
    Fantastic dramatisation
Would you listen to Agatha Christie: Murder Is Easy (Dramatised) again? Why?
I just bought this dramatisation last week and have already listened to it at least 3 times. I love the characters and actors as this has always been a favourite Agatha Christie story. I had not heard Michael Cochrane before but will be checking out more of his work.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that for a change this story didn't include Poirot or Miss Marple and even though I knew the outcome the twists and turns as it went along took me with it.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
My favourite scene is the final reveal of the mystery as I can remember the first time I read the book I was surprised at the outcome because it is so unexpected.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I really like the start of the story when the stage is set by Miss Pinkerton and the assumption that she is a bit batty is very well done. But then Luke changes his mind about her and decides to investigate due to the subsequent happenings, it is an engaging start.
    Any additional comments?
I will be listening to and enjoying this audio book for years to come as the story is one of Agatha Christie's best and so well done.
    Lovely Murder!
I've always enjoyed a good Agatha Christie, and this is no exception! Top marks on all accounts! Perhaps if it had been a little longer is the only tiny minus, but I'm not deducting marks for that!
    Murder is Easy
I've not heard of Micheal Cochrane before but he did a good job of narrating this book.
Again Agatha Christie did her brilliant job of keeping you guessing all the way through.
The culprit was definitely the least person you'd expect.

    Go for it
Sometimes I experience book doldrums and I search for books that are narrated by one of my favorites. I'm a Davina Porter fan, so I searched on her name and came up with this series. I don't think I've read any bad books that she has narrated. This one was fun and a good mystery. It held my attention, so I would recommend it if you like historical novel types. I'm looking forward to the other two books in the Death series.
A Cozy about a Cozy Writer
Published in 2008, Death of a Cozy Writer is the first in a series featuring Detective Chief Inspector St. Just. All of the elements of a classic golden age mystery are present: a large country mansion, a gathering of all the members of a wealthy family, servants with varying degrees of loyalty to their employers, seething rancor and hatred among family members, a patriarch who is cruel and hatedul to all, and finally, murder. DCI St. Just and his Constable arrive toi nvestigate.
This is a well -written mystery, with well developed characters, an intriguing twist or two in the plot, and the atmosphere of a golden age detective story spiced by a few 21st century devices. In St. Just, Malliet has created a likeable and capable investigator with a sense of humor as well as common sense. All in all, a very enjoyable read, although I must say that I prefer Malliet's other series, the Max Tudor mysteries.
    A modern day classic mystery!
Death of a Cozy Writer won numerous mystery book awards when it came out in 2008. I could tell way before I had gotten very far into the story that the awards were most justified!!
The English countryside and home of mystery writer and millionaire, Sir Adrian Beauclerk-Fisk is the center for this character driven , police procedural murder mystery. Everyone seems to have motive and no one seems particularly honest with their answers. But worst of all, murder seems more of an inconvenience for the family and staff, non of whom are particularly saddened by the deaths of family members.
The mystery had the necessary turns and twists, with building clues.

this was a very short story...not even 30 minute. I enjoy this A.Christie series but was disappointed it was so short.
