    Publisher's Summary:
Philip Marlowe's on a case: his client, a dried-up husk of a woman, wants him to recover a rare gold coin called a Brasher Doubloon, missing from her late husband's collection.
That's the simple part. It becomes more complicated when Marlowe finds that everyone who handles the coin suffers a run of very bad luck: they always end up dead. That's also unlucky for a private investigator, because leaving a trail of corpses around LA gets cops' noses out of joint.
If Marlowe doesn't wrap this one up fast, he's going to end up in jail - or worse, in a box in the ground...
Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago in 1888 and moved to England with his family when he was 12. He attended Dulwich College, Alma Mater to some of the 20th century's most renowned writers. Returning to America in 1912, he settled in California, worked in a number of jobs, and later married.
It was during the Depression era that he seriously turned his hand to writing and his first published story appeared in the pulp magazine Black Mask in 1933, followed six years later by his first novel. The Big Sleep introduced the world to Philip Marlowe, the often imitated but never-bettered hard-boiled private investigator. It is in Marlowe's long shadow that every fictional detective must stand - and under the influence of Raymond Chandler's addictive prose that every crime author must write.

    Ray Porters reading is great
Typical Raymond Chandler Great plot and Ray brings it all alive with his reading. The tone and rhythm of his voice is perfect for the book.
    Great narration - classic Chandler
Well worth a credit, this is classic Chandler. I enjoyed this story a lot and would highly recommend.
    High mystery
Wonderful Reading by Porter. Chandler's prose is alive in every sentence. Great characters, artfully complicated.
    Brilliant.
Perfect listening. Pitch-perfect narration. Near-perfect storytelling. Teasingly convoluted plotting - but the 'whodunit' is not really the point with Chandler is it. The wry, sardonic humour carries you along and, at the end, you want to start all over again.
    Good but not Chandler's best
An excellent book that like all of the Marlowe stories is beautifully noir.
The performance is absolutely top notch as I would expect from Ray Porter and the rest of the book series.
The only bad point (and a minor one at that) is this does not feel as strong as some of the other Marlowe mysteries).
    Great book and very recommended!

I first read The Long Goodbye over 50 years ago
Raymond Chandler was one of my favorite authors when I was a young man. Reading the book again after so long is fascinating and fun. In retrospect it now seems that the Phillip Marlowe crime mysteries all followed a formula; reading one was similar to reading all. I'm less enthralled with The Long Goodbye than I was when I first read it, but it is still excellent crime fiction.
There have been some reviews here that have been critical of Ray Porter, the narrator. I disagree! Porter, I believe, narrated the book just as Chandler would have wanted. The book is written in Marlowe's first person. Porter uses the voice that I imagine Marlowe would have had.
Comparing Chandler to modern crime fiction writers is difficult. Michael Connelly and his Harry Bosch character come to mind, but that is probably because Bosch and Marlowe cover the same geographic territory.
Both the burn and the bush
Labels like genius and masterpiece get thrown around a lot in the arts. Certain writers are deemed to be brilliant and yet their stars fade quickly. Their notable books are soon forgotten, misplaced, unread and eventually pulped. Other writers seem to have the opposite trajectory. They are viewed as pulp or genre writers, but over time they seem to transcend the genre and even seem to dance on the graves of labels. They are iconic. Raymond Chandler is one of those later writers.
He is one of the Holy Trinity of detective novelists (along with Dashiell Hammett and James M. Cain). These are the men who built the hard-boiled noir house that everyone else lives in. He is a god and a poet.

    Good as always
What made the experience of listening to The Laws of Murder the most enjoyable?
Charles Lennox is one of the nicest, kindest fictional characters I know. He and his world are always interesting in book version already, with this reader, they are even better.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was gripping and the characters appealing.
What about James Langtons performance did you like?
He is a very good reader, who suits Charles Lennox' character and the story's mood.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    It made me think...
    Any additional comments?
I highly recommend the book and Charles Finch's other books, less for being kept on the edge of the seat while reading/listening, more for overall thoughtfulness and interest.
    Good historical mystery series
Charles Lenox is an independently wealthy, private investigator in 1876a time when the profession is still young. In previous books, he has always been very successful at whatever efforts he turns his attentions toward. This book takes an interesting turn, in that it shows him struggling professionally for much of the story.
He and several of his longtime friends and associates have decided to open an investigation agency together. And to his astonishment and embarrassment, he not only does not receive a lot of requests for his help at first, he actually is getting some bad reviews in the press. Puzzled and unable to figure out what has happened, he suddenly gets a case when a man from Scotland Yard he has worked with for many years is murdered. Immediately he is back in his familiar territorysearching for a killer.
This is a pretty good series, one Ive read over the years and enjoyed. Id say one of the best parts of this books is the cleverness of the plot, but there were parts that were a bit slow (not too many, mostly in the beginning). The story gets quite involved and interesting, especially in the second half. The narration is good, and the various voices are easily identifiable. Recommend!
    Enjoyed very much
After reading all the others in this series, this was my first audio book of Finch. I enjoyed it just as much as the books. The storyline was well done, detailed and wrapped up sufficiently. The narrator did a good job of changing voices and making it sound more like a drama.

    My Favorite Heyer Mystery!
What made the experience of listening to A Blunt Instrument the most enjoyable?
The story. It keeps you guessing.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sgt Hemingway. I love how he thinks.
Have you listened to any of Ulli Birvés other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is another great performance by Ulli Birve. A real professional.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No crying but I laughed...a lot!
    Any additional comments?
I love Georgette Heyer books, especially the mysteries, and A BLUNT INSTRUMENT is my favorite Heyer mystery. It shows off Heyer's skill in creating characters that make the reader interested in the story. She paints such a vivid picture of the social culture of the time period that it becomes an element of the story. Bottom Line: This story is fun and Ulli Birve gives another great performance so you can't go wrong with this book if you like English mysteries and/or books by Georgette Heyer.
    Fan of Heyer
I'm usually a great fan of Georgette Heyer, and this narrator is usually very competent as well. I'm not sure why she speaks so very slowly in a typical recording, unless it is to facilitate using the alternates speeds for listening.
For my taste, the plant spent far too much time focused on one and two minute increments of time during which the murder could have happened. I think the plotline could be fine, probably better for me if I was actually reading the book rather than listening, but the narration made one of the main characters (Neville Fletcher) seem possibly even more smarmy and unlikable than necessary. He had the potential to be witty and light, but came off as very patronizing and condescending. The first audiobook I just didn't finish.
A very good story with a surprise ending. I really
The narrator was very good. I liked the different voices she used for the different characters
Great story by a terrific reader
One of the best of the wonderful Georgette Heyer mysteries.

    What a twist
While I am enjoying this series of mysteries, I wasn't sure about this one from a previous review by a fellow Audible listener. Apparently they weren't all that trilled with the cast of characters. My first thought was, well that's just typical British mystery casting. Now I'm sure, and glad I did. The twisted sister plot was well worth it.
    Extremely entertaining.
    Great detective story
A grumpy old man is murdered and everyone seem to have a motive. Inspector Hannasyde and Sergeant Hemmingway are called in to solve the case but soon find out, that its not as easy as they'd hoped. The book is arguably Heyer's best detective novel. The parsimonious Miss Harriet, the manipulative Mrs. Matthews and "the amiable snake", Randall Matthews, are unforgettable characters. Ulli Birvè does a great job of recreating the way posh Londoners spoke in the 1920's-1930's.
    Entertaining - couldn't stop listening
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Oh yes. This is a really good MYSTERY. The characters have depth, the story keeps you guessing until the end and the narrator makes you part of the story. You bond with the characters and either love them, hate them, or feel annoyance. A huge plus is that there is no sex or violence....just pure genious.
What did you like best about this story?
The end. It was a total surprise. I suspected the killer at one time in the story, but I also guessed some of the other characters.
What does Ulli Birvé bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Ulii was awesome. She gave the listeners an unusual look at the characters. Helping us to see them as humans with wit, emotions and complexities.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES.....and it was a rainy Sunday. So, I did listen all in one sitting.
    Any additional comments?
I've read Georgette Heyer's romances since I was in my early 20's. I'm 68 now and am thrilled to have found her mysteries. They are well worth waiting for.
    one of my favorites
listening to this was a total pleasure. loved the characters, the plot and the ending.
    Hard row to hoe
As much as I generally enjoy Georgette Heyer, this book was extremely difficult to listen to without throwing it through a window. The only one of the characters in the least likable was the inspector. Never have I wanted an entire cast to be guilty.......until now.

    Surprisingly Awesome!
One of THE best endings I've ever read...
Listening to the audio version of this was the best decision, I believe, as it made the surprises so much more surprising! It started off okay, and because of certain inconsistencies, at first I was a bit overwhelmed. However, as you get through the book, sooo many things make sense. Honestly, it was worth the five stars just for that.
    Hard to stop listening
Just a cracker of a story
No more clues from me you will have to take the clue rice reviewers words as truth
    Listen and enjoy
    Twist and Shout!
Heavens! It takes a brave man to take up the pen and try to extend the Sherlock Holmes legend. However, Anthony Horrowitz is just such a man. He produces a fast-moving adventure with plenty of action and possibly slightly more gore than you'd expect, though never overly gratuitous in my view. The foundations of a Holmes novel are here of course with a mysterr to solve, dastardly villains the two leads in Detective Athelney Jones and Pinkerton agent Frederick Chase. They are obviously there to provide a similar chemistry to Holmes and Watson but they are treated not as mere imitations but as characters and back stories in their own right. The way that Athelney Jones a minor character from the original stories is worked into the plot is particularly well done.
All well and good but throughout the story there are continual hints that we are all missing something. I had all kinds of theories but the twist when it comes really does send a jolt through the senses and it's a genuine double take moment when it happens. I'll definitely say no more because to do so would be to risk ruining it. I'm sure it will divide opinion but there are some lengths taken to "reveal all" which helps.
The narration is very good and although not all accents were fully convincing to my ear the different characters were easy to distinguish and the drama maintained throughout.
In summary I felt this was a very fine effort and well worth a credit and the time spent. The big twist will most likely be the telling point for how most readers regard the book. I thought it was stunningly good and would highly recommend it!
    Completely taken in
I love Horowitz! This is such fun and as good as any Sherlock Holmes.

Not as good as I hoped
The actor playing Father Brown is good, the rest of the cast variable. The sound effects are exaggerated and irritating. The choice of music is inappropriate. But the stories are good. My advice is to try the BBC dramatisations instead.
    Radio show great fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed this radio show. Great fun! It gave a great atmosphere that was very in keeping with the original stories!
    Great entertainment!
The mechanics of mystery were very well done. Somewhat reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes. Offers a classic "explanation" of the solution just before completion.
If you are looking for a new neat set of stories that are clean and safe for older children (decapitations in storyline), these are worth your time and money.
If I had anything negative to say it would be the overreach of a couple of character's accents (not that I could do near as well). At times it was difficult to make out what was being said. Also, sound effect overwhelmed speech from time to time. These had little impact on a great storyline!
    Clever, fun, entertaining, and interesting!!
    Entertaining and fun
A milder form of the Sherlock Holmes type of crimes, though from the equally keen Father Brown. A fun listen with a chocolate loving Father.
    Insulting to skeptics, freethinkers, scientists
What would have made The Innocence of Father Brown Vol. 1 better?
Less insults to reason and skepticism in the first story.Too many "science is less worthy than religion" tropes.
Would you ever listen to anything by M. J. Elliott and G. K. Chesterton again?
    No
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    no
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Innocence of Father Brown Vol. 1?
    n/a
    Any additional comments?

    Publisher's Summary:
In New York City in the early 1930s, a man is poisoned on a crowded streetcar during rush hour. Everyone sees Longstreet die - but no one sees the killer. Inspector Thumm's few clues all lead up a blind alley. He finally seeks the aid of Drury Lane - retired Shakespearean actor, master of disguise, and amateur sleuth. Seated amid the splendor of the vast medieval halls of his castle on the Hudson, Drury Lane hears the story from the inspector. He knows who the murderer is right away, but he refuses to reveal his identity until he has sufficient evidence for the police to arrest him.
    Members Reviews:
Entertaining mystery not as densely packed with clues as an EQ mystery
And with a slueth not nearly as eccentric or weird as EQ. Not to say Drury Lane is not a remarkable character. Completely deaf, but a master of lip reading and disguise with a flair for the dramatic, as would befit retired actor who sunbathes in the nude. Lane is reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes in his perception of subtle clues and in the drawing out of wispy linkages. The story and the characters are just not quite as sharp in this early effort by the authors as they would soon be in their early EQ books.
A Solid Whodunit In the Classic Style of Ellery Queen
This is the first of four whodunits featuring the deaf actor Drury Lane written by the two cousins who usually wrote under the pen name Ellery Queen (the Drury Lane novels originally used the pseudonym Barnaby Ross). The book features flamboyant characters (none more so than Drury Lane himself), a complex plot, and a devilishly clever solution, all hallmarks of Ellery Queen. Sharp-eyed readers who spot the the authors' sleight of hand may arrive at the solution fairly quickly, but they will still find this to be a fun read. I've been a fan of Ellery Queen mysteries ever since I first discovered them when I was in high school many years ago, but somehow I never got around to reading the three Drury Lane books, so I'm especially happy that they are now available on Kindle.
    Three Stars
The book fell apart upon arrival.
Tarnish the Gilt on the Golden Age?
I think I've read every Ellery Queen novel at least twice, and as other reviewers here have pointed out, THE TRAGEDY OF X is one of his top performances from the period when he was the best fair-play detective story writer alive.
But if this is the best of the best of the Golden Age mysteries, may I talk a little about how that gold isn't all golden?
Drury Lane, master detective, makes deductions based on things like how a cigarette lighter works, or how late a man with a cold gets up in the morning. (I made these examples up to avoid spoilers; they're not in THE TRAGEDY OF X, but things like them are.) These simple observations save lives or find murderers.
    BUT.
Drury Lane tells the police he has the first of three murders solved as soon as he hears about it. But he can't tell who the murderer is yet, because he's playing a dangerous game with the murderer, and has to time his revelations perfectly.
This is simply not true. If Lane had told what he knew at once, the lives of two other people would have been saved.

    Captivating mystery!
This was a well plotted mystery with many suspects meticulously narrowed to the culprit. The narration was well suited too.
    Good Old-Fashioned Mystery Novel
This story was a delightful with its precise complexity and detail. I changed my own predictions several times during the story, and it had a very satisfactory ending. It was a relief to listen to a quality story that wasn't peppered with obscene language and sexual scenes that were distracting and unnecessary at the best and often offensive. I often wish that books would have ratings (like movies) so I can anticipate what objectionable features may be included.
    One of Miss Silver's Best
Fast paced, enough dead bodies, some romance, and a new outfit for little Josephine. What else could you ask for? The murderer was a surprise until near the end. A thoroughly enjoyable mystery f the ld school.
    One of her best
Good book. Good story. Love the reader.
As always a good read. One of my favorites. Four more words needed.
