The Guinea Pig Did It!!

If you are new to the world of Bernie Little (Hawaiian-shirt wearing Arizona P.I.) and his intrepid partner, K-9 flunkee (there was a cat involved, enough said) Chet (the Jet), I urge you to give this book a try. Although it is the 7th of the series (and Chet often refers to past cases in his mental soliloquies), you can easily start with this book.

Spencer Quinn is as reliable a writer as David Rosenfelt -- I always know what to expect and am never left wanting, saddened only in knowing I will need to wait for my next Chet and Bernie adventure.

The books are told from the point of view of Chet, which can be puerile or overly sentimental in the hands of less skilled writers. Quinn gets Chet just right, "plain and simple." If you have ever looked into your dog's eyes and wondered what he was thinking, this book is for you! Could your sleeping dog's whimpering be caused by a nightmare of a javelina with buzzsaw tusks? I just love Chet!

The mystery isn't overly complex, so if you are looking for twist and turns and surprising denouements, you can skip this one. If you are looking for a delightfully fun romp in the world of Chet and Bernie (this time in the mean streets of Washington, D.C, where Bernie's girlfriend Suzie Sanchez is working as a reporter), give this one a try -- it is worth a credit.

The narrator, Jim Frangione, IS the voice of Chet and does well with Bernie's vocalizations. However, his delivery of some of the accents (two of the British characters don't sound very British) is subpar. But, he is so perfect as Chet, the few shortcomings did not detract from the overall delivery.

Maybe best book in this series yet

Okay, I am a dog fanatic. So my rating is less influenced by the story (which I like and would rank among the better ones in the series despite what some other reviewers are saying) but the description of Chet's way of thinking. I must admit that I found the last couple of books less enjoyable but this time around Spencer Quinn is back to form and absolutely nails it. I know this is EXACTLY how my dogs think :-) I couldn't stop smiling and often had to laugh out loud. It's just perfect. And credit where credit is due: Jim Frangione is also on top of his game and delivers Chet's lines impeccably.

Not up to Chet Standards

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Chet's viewpoint is what is precious, but after that. the plot seemed idiotic. Placing it around D.C.

Historic Homes Can be Murder

Meg's mother inherits a farmhouse and orchard that has been in her family for hundreds of years. She asks her daughter Meg to move into it, interview real estate agents, and get the old home ready for sale. Since the bank Meg worked for has merged with another bank, her position no longer exists, and so does her relationship with her ex boyfriend. Meg is not only free to help her Mom, she is fortunate to have something to do while she is getting her life together. Meg learns a lot about living in the country, including the difference between a septic system and a sewer system. Most importantly even new septic tanks can't handle dead bodies dumped into them before they are backfilled.

Since the septic tank is on Meg's property, Meg becomes a murder suspect. She is befriended by one family but the rest of the community really hope she did it, and not one of their own. This makes Meg somewhat isolated. she has cordial relationships with the people in the town, but there is no real warmth for the first part of the book, and then only with one person.

Oddly Meg does not immediately grab her phone and tell her Mom that their plan to sell the old home hit a snag. Reasonably a daughter would keep her Mom posted on the progress of the house renovation, not to mention the dead guy in the septic tank.

This is a slow moving story. It distracted me while I was doing a slightly complicated job that I hate. I probably will not get the next one, but this one really helped me through a really irritating job.

An all Around Cozy Mystery

LIght reading but a tightly knit story. Interesting characters that are credible people, you might know or would like to know.

Meg would never have imagined that she'd become involved in a murder and of her own ex boyfriend. When his corpse is blocking up her new septic system, Meg is a prime suspect. Dealing with a hostile detective that looks for the easy, fast way to close the case forces Meg to find the killer herself. Robin Miles was the perfect narrator for this book. Her voice is fantastic.

I like this authors style.

I have listen to another series by Sheila Connelly and enjoyed them. This is a different series and I enjoyed this first in the series. I look forward to listening to more.

Beginning slowly, some moments of intense melodrama, this is a "curl up by the fire and sip wine kind of book". The voices were distinct and varied. The characters were not compelling but light weight.

What made the experience of listening to Rotten to the Core the most enjoyable?

All of Connolly's books are well written, leaving you to want to continue on, not only in the book but with the series! She keeps you guessing right to the end. This one had an unexpected end, it is always the quiet ones.

Another good story

This is another good addition to the Orchid Mystery Series. Meg stumbles on to a body on her property and once again she has to solve the crime. This story is very entertaing and I like the way that the characters are developing. I'm disappointed that the recipes were not included, but I have been told that the technical team is looking into it.

Light but Interesting Read

If you could sum up Rotten to the Core in three words, what would they be?

It's longer than three words but "Apples and Poison don't mix"

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not really, although when they were poisoned, and started working through the possibilities

of who might have wanted to kill them, I figured out who it was. The actual killer was interesting...

What does Robin Miles bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The difference in the vocalization of the characters. The Northern accents are just right, not overly done. The speed of speech was on target....nothing blows a good narration than too fast or too slow of speaking.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Due to the length, it's very doable...even to go on to listen to another book in the series.

Gotta love apples

A fun story but heavy on details that could become a bit boring. Once again Meg has to deal with Detective William Markus her nemesis from One Bad Apple. Thankfully this time Meg does not know Jason Miller who's body she finds in her springhouse. Markus does manage to implicate Meg in the murder and Meg sets out to discover who Jason is and why someone killed.

Robin Miles, narrator for the Orchard Series does such a wonderful narration that it's sometimes hard to tell if this series is fiction or non fiction.

Another Great Cozy Orchard Story

What did you love best about Rotten to the Core?

I love the way the friendships are growing and the adding of new people. I also love how Meg is changing. I also love the slow pace of the relationship of meg and Seth. The story was very good as well. I have never knew so much went into farming.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was a good story but I did enjoy the first one more but it did keep me going and I wanted to see it through and was glad I did.

Could have been a 5 star

First let me say I have been a Catherine Coulter fan, since her first book was published. When her FBI thrillers came out I fell in love with Sherlock and Savich. And would immediately grab them as soon as they would come out. Until they brought in the paranormal and weird characters of the Blessed bunch. I have thrown more than one book and CD out into the garbage. I was so in hopes that they were done with that junk. And am praying that this last book will be the end to it at last. For one I think this book would have been a 5 star without the Blessed parts. Really like that they are bringing Nicholas over from England. And can see all kinds of possibilities for different really good stories.

Predictable but a fun "read"

How could the performance have been better?

I found the Renee Raudman's portions of the reading to be annoying. It was difficult to distinguish between the female characters as they all sounded weak. The characters are strong, powerful women but the vocal rendition was whispy and rather high-pitched. To me, this was very distracting. I kept thinking "I would never take this woman seriously in real-life."

Any additional comments?

Like any book series that makes it to number 18, I found it was very similar to other books in the series...like using a cookie cutter. With that said, I still enjoy the series and will at least try number 19 when it comes out (providing it is not read by Renee Raudman).

I liked the way this was narrated. Outstanding.

Clambakes can be deadly!!

This new Maine Clambake Series starts off with a hanging body at a wedding. Not a good thing for a wedding celebration or the Snowden Family Clambake Company. Julia Snowden has left her high power job in New York to try and keep her family's floundering business from going under. Everything has been invested to keep it going, including her Mom's house, their boat, and the island where they have their clambakes.

I really enjoyed this book as the mystery took a few twisting turns and the conclusion was different but very believable. Also enjoyed the emphasis on family sticking together--those by blood and those by long time friendships. The hints at future romantic entanglements between a few of the characters left me wanting to get right into the next book. Recipes were included, and the food descriptions in the book made me feel like I was right there at the clambake. Winning start to this new series!

I listened to this on audio and really enjoyed the added dramatics. I'm finding that cozy reads are really fun to listen to as well as to read.

Entertaining Cozy Mystery

Clammed Up is a delightful beginning to the Maine Clambake Mystery series by Barbara Ross. From the start I was engrossed by the story and the hurdles before protagonist Julia Snowden in her quest to save her family's clambake. I felt Julia's heartache as her troubles piled up. The reader did a superb job and the book ended with a cliffhanger of the sort that absolutely makes me want to go straight on to book 2 in the series. Highly recommended to cozy mystery readers.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Change the narrator! Overly dramatic performance takes away from the listening experience.

This is a nice story. Not too complicated of a story but is an easy listen while relaxing at the beach or just doing everyday tasks. I was looking for a new series but unfortunately this will not be it.

I have recommended this book to friends and family. My daughter in law was already reading it. We both love it.

My Favorite Miss Silver So Far

I discovered Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver series about a year ago. They are old fashioned British cozies. My rating is based on how well they fit that genre. Many of the books center on lost relatives or an unusual inheritance. The Chinese Shawl is set in the early 1940's. The details feel authentic and the mystery/murder is intriguing.

No - as much as I love the Miss Silver books, they don't bear repeating.

Diana Bishop is a consummate narrator. She saves many a book.

I love the term "cozy". It describes exactly what these books are. When you need a break from some tough reads, it's nice to be bundled up in an English cozy. I retreat to Miss Silver quite often and she always calms me.

Interesting

not really gripping like the Agatha Christie books of Miss Marple or Hercule P . Very good on character analysis of themselves just too shallow for some of the 'bad' guys. I did not like the book

Slow moving.

The story line is lost among a myriad of descriptive details. Length of people's eyelashes and colors in wallpaper just don't hold my attention.

Disappointing

What would have made Undetected better?

I know this review is going to sound harsh but after the last three books I am just too frustrated not to comment. I have read every Dee Henderson book I can find and fell in love with both the O'Malley's and the Uncommon Heroes series. Henderson was my favorite author growing up and my mom and I would fight over who got to read her new books first.

Full Disclosure was different from the rest of Henderson's books, but it started a new trend that I am just not enjoying at all. Unspoken and now Undetected all feel like nearly identical character personality types in a strung out plot with only a few chapters of suspense. The male characters are almost too perfect to relate too and while I appreciate smart, talented, unique, loner-type women I need at least some variety. I love the suspense and the spiritual growth displayed in her previous books. They were about normal, broken people who struggled but ultimately grew with God and were used by him to do something amazing. It was almost creepy how few flaws or struggles any of the characters (especially the males) had in the last couple books. I can appreciate Daniel and Mark handling the situation like Christian men, but there needed to be some more frustration and self-checks to make it believable. Seriously, if Mark asked Gina to marry him one more time I was going to stop listening. It is not that I hate reading about godly, mature Christians, I just need to see them struggle and grow spiritually or at least someone in the book to do so or else it seems like every chapter is just more of the same. Internal struggles and conflict make for a much more enjoyable plot. I did not consider Gina's decision on which guy to marry very conflicted. The book buried her struggle to decide under way too many "marry me Gina"s from Mark. If he had asked her to seek God's will and then just focused on wooing her it would have been much more believable.

The lack of email and modern comms was also a little frustrating.

The Best Kate Shaguk.

This book is by far the best of the series. It is full of suspense, backstory, and character development. Kate, Jack and Mutt are working as hunting guides in the bush. But the clients are anything but likable. They are disrespectful, arrogant, and Kate is fearful that it might be worse than that. When one client dies Kate and Jack must stay safe, protect their clients and investigate without alerting the killer. It sets up a story that is so much tighter, darker and sadder than any we have seen in the series so far.

Warning! This book will punch you in the gut and leave you slightly (or more) sad.

Pivot Point

This book is chock full of action, suspense, mystery, adventure, joy and sorrow. As the title suggests, it's about big game guiding in Alaska--gone bad in this instance. Stabenow's writing is great and kept me on the edge. Her characters are very real, the scenes vivid and believable. The pivot point of the series is in here, and I almost fell off my bicycle when I heard it. Then, Kate goes mad with rage and serves up the perpetrator to a pervert--that's real revenge. With that said, I wonder what's next?

Worst Kate Shugak book ever!

Nothing happens in this book until you're halfway in and then it's like a boulder rolling downhill. The characters are described in excruciating detail twice. Every action and scene was also described in minute detail. Add to that a seriously rotten ending. Don't waste your credit/money.

One of her best

Yes, I'd listen to it again but I still have the rest of the this series and her others to finish first.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Love Kate of course, but the irascible Uncle is also one of my favorites.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I've mentioned this before, and it's so true -- the thing about listening to the book now compared with reading it when it came out is that I've forgotten so much. So much, In fact, that I kept wondering if I'd somehow missed this one. Until the scene that made me cry. That scene was still in my mind's eye after all these years, but I was caught by surprise when it crept up on me again. I knew it was going to happen but I had no idea it was coming in this book.

Marguerite Gavin did an excellent job on this one, even with the male voices. Kudos to her!

Excellent but disappointed

The book is excellent but I wish it had ended differently. Very disappointed with the story. Not sure if I will continue the series. I'm not sure why the woman can't be a hero and have someone they love in their life. I wish I could find an author not threatened by love.

A Book With No Ending

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story just abruptly stopped with no proper ending. It leaves the reader wondering what happens regarding the events happening in the book. Also, it is time for the long, drawn out love triangle to end!

Would you ever listen to anything by Joanne Fluke again?

Maybe, but I will wait for the reviews first. I think she has run out of ideas on this storyline.

These characters have become so boring and tedious and the love triangle so ridiculous. It is time for the author to wrap up the story and start something new. Also, the recipes would be better put at the end of the book instead of breaking up the story. And stop talking down to me so much in the recipes.

Who Cut Off the End of the Book???

This could have and WOULD HAVE been a four or five star book, but the end of it was NOT THERE.. I had to rewind it twice to make sure that I had not missed something. I actually LOVE this series, and was LOVING this book . . . then it ended. Now I am MAD!!!

Barry Eisler narrates perfectly

What made the experience of listening to The Killer Ascendant the most enjoyable?

In this book Dox made it really great! His character is so humorous. I love the sense of humor attributed to him. Even through his brutal interrogation he maintains his sarcastic and cutting remarks. I truly hope there are no plans to kill him off anytime soon, he is a great addition to this series.

What does Barry Eisler bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The tones and inflections he intends when he wrote it.

Having Eisler read his own works was the best thing he could have done. I had tried listening to this series previously and was not impressed with the narration and gave up. When I started listening again now that Eisler has redone them all, I've been on a marathon and have listened to 5 in a row. I plan to repurchase the one I have only now with Eisler narrating. This really is such a good series, I am so glad I decided to give it another try.

Action thriller listeners owe Barry Eisler a lot!

I listened to this John Rain #6 novel 2 years ago. It is an outstanding espionage/action thriller novel narrated by the author who is as good at narrating as authoring. Barry Eisler was an established author who nevertheless was a leader in the move to independent publishing resulting in lower average prices allowing avid readers/listeners access to more good books for less money. Thanks Barry!

Still Good

I thought this novel was still very good, but the story was not on par with the previous 5 John Rain novels that were packed with action, plot twists, and complexed characters. It was more mellow than the others, I feel. Im a huge Barry Eisler fan and still think he rules the genre, regardless of how a story eventually unfolds. I recommend this book to fans of John Rain and newcomers alike.
