    Publisher's Summary:
A classic title from M. C. Beaton's New York Times best-selling Hamish Macbeth series.
About the best that can be said of wealthy Maggie Baird is that inside her middle-aged body, there still beats the heart of a beautiful tart. So when her car catches fire with Maggie in it, there are five likely suspects right on the premises of her luxurious Highlands cottage. Lochdubh police constable Hamish Macbeth has to question Maggie's timid niece and four former lovers, one of whom Maggie had intended to pick for her husband. All five are equally poor - with ample motive and opportunity to monkey with Maggie's car. Now to find the killer, the astute lawman must apply his extraordinary insight into human nature. But when the evidence appears to point to the wrong person entirely, Hamish must dig down deep to stop the real murderer's escape.

Not my favorite Hamish Macbeth mystery
To me the important thing about this series is the characters - granted, most of the villains and many of the minor characters are detestable, but the 'hussy' in this one is particularly unlikable.
Also, while in all the Hamish Macbeth books I've read so far the plots are totally implausible, the plot in this one is particularly so.
Still, if you are as fond of this series and of Hamish Macbeth as I am, don't skip this book as there are some sub plots that run throughout the series, and it's still a fun read.
    .
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator. I'm working my way through to Davinia Porter, though she doesn't seem like the perfect narrator either. All due respect to Shaun Grindell, his delivery is getting better but there's just not enough life in his interpretations for me. Part of the problem could be the editing I suppose. Its quite jarring to go from one scene to another, I'm assuming a new chapter (?), where the action and individuals involved are totally different without so much as a hesitation. There should be a narrative pause to let the reader know there's going to be a change.
Would you recommend Death of a Hussy to your friends? Why or why not?
I'd recommend they read these books. I enjoyed the books much more.
    Any additional comments?
These are not suspenseful or challenging mysteries. The reader will probably figure things out ahead of time. I'd class them with what's referred to as "cosy mysteries", which are exactly what I'm looking for before sleep, or in the middle of the night when the aches and pains of too much time spent in the garden wake me.
    A Fun Cozy Mystery
Hamish MacBeth is always a fun and entertaining read. But I have to admit that the murder aspect of the book was a bit of a stretch. Hamish seems to have a sixth sense when it comes to these things. All in all it didn't affect the story which was enjoyable.
Made me appreciate the other narrators
This book probably completes the series for me. I enjoyed it, but the narrator's attempt at all the voices and accents was very laboured. I found it distracting all through the book.

    Title: Murder and Mendelssohn
    Subtitle: A Phryne Fisher Mystery
    Author: Kerry Greenwood
    Narrator: Stephanie Daniel
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-13
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 477 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
An orchestral conductor has been found dead and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson needs the delightfully incisive and sophisticated Miss Fisher's assistance. Hugh Tregennis has been murdered in a most flamboyant mode by a killer with a point to prove. But how many killers is Phryne really stalking?
At the same time, the dark curls and disdainful air of mathematician and code-breaker Rupert Sheffield are taking Melbourne by storm. They've certainly taken the heart of Phryne's old friend from the trenches of WWI, John Wilson. Phryne recognises Sheffield as a man who attracts danger and is determined to protect John from harm. While Mendelssohn's 'Elijah,' memories of the Great War, and the science of deduction ring in her head, Phryne's past must also play its part as MI6 become involved in the tangled web of murders.

Starchy mystery accompanies KG's take on Sherlock
I didn't know it was possible for one person to feel so polarised about something. But I am!
Usually it requires two individuals of opposite opinions to polarise a subject, but somehow, after a couple of hours consideration I've decided I have very dichotomous views about this book. I loved some aspects and really quite disliked others. If I'm brutally honest, if this were a first book in a series, rather than the 20th (and therefore at a stage where I already have a deep connection with the characters) I'm not 100% certain I would have continued the series. I think this book is not a good introduction to Phryne for non-fans, and deviates a little from the perfected formula enough to perturb her loyal fans. It certainly won't make me throw down my Phryne Fisher Fan Club membership card in disgust, but it didn't make me feel like I needed to press "Play Again" as almost every other Phryne novel did.
On the one hand I loved the return of Phryne, as I knew I would. And Phryne was as she ever was; fun and sassy, and meddlesome in her very enjoyable way, and Stephanie Daniel's narration was stellar as always. I also enjoyed the Sherlock-ian story line. By its very nature, a Sherlock theme is not original, but Kerry does a wonderful job of portraying a Sherlock as SHE imagines him (fans of the BBCs Sherlock will have no trouble imagining BC in the role of Rupert). And I think her style of book really has been begging for the opportunity to take a dig at the Sherlock method, so I enjoyed this aspect of the novel immensely. I also thought that the back story of the things Phryne got up to during the war were great, if a little "out of the blue".
Regarding the the bits I did not enjoy (as much): I, like many other readers, was disappointed with the increase in the detailed sex scenes, scenes that I only appreciate listening to when they add to the context of the story. As many of the scenes were filler, (likewise the increase in Phryne's inner dialogue regarding handsome men she'd like to "tumble") I found these scenes to detract from the story rather than add to it.

    Title: No Turning Back
    Subtitle: Kathleen Turner, Book 1
    Author: Tiffany Snow
    Narrator: Angela Dawe
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-03-13
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 482 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Kathleen Turner has goals. She moved to Indianapolis to start seeing to them, but things arent going quite as well as shed hoped. Shes a runner for a high-powered law firm in town, not the most prestigious of positions, but it and her part-time bartender gig at least pays the bills. And one of the senior partners is a dreamboat in that obscenely rich, disturbingly good looking, slightly snobbish sort of way.
Its the middle of the night when Kathleen hears fighting coming from her neighbor Sheilas apartment. As disturbing as that is, its the ominous sound of silence afterwards that keeps Kathleen from falling back to sleep. Slipping from bed with the intention of making sure everything is okay, Kathleen knocks on her friends door, only to find Sheila murdered, her naked body sprawled on sheets stained crimson with her blood.
Shock and horror are followed by gritty determination when it becomes clear that Sheilas death isnt random and it isnt the result of a jealous boyfriend. Its the opening gambit in a web of murder, deceit, conspiracy, and fraud that stretches to the law firm for which Kathleen works. Maybe to the very office that Blane Kirk commands.
And Kathleen Turner, law office runner, can trust no one if she wants to survive.

I wish Kathleen was a bit tougher
These books have promise, but I don't know if I'm 100% sold. The mystery was interesting enough, but I just wasn't sold on our heroine, Kathleen Turner. I know she's supposed to be young, but how anyone can be that naive, I have no idea. She blindly trusted everyone from the many men trying to get into her pants to her random neighborhood. And she was so hell bent on getting justice for her murder neighbor. I know she's your friend and all, but seriously, you are going to risk your life to find out who killed her? That type of loyalty is usually reserved for someone you know more than a couple of months and had a few cups of coffee with. She just made so many dumb mistakes and most of what she accomplished was from blind luck as opposed to any real intelligence or skill. And she was constantly being saved by someone else. I mean, constantly. I like my heroes (men or women) to be a little more self-sufficient. I had high hopes for this cop's daughter, but overall, she disappointed me, and after a while, the book started to feel a little long with her repeated antics.
I think I'll read one more book in the series to see if things improve, because they do have potential. But if the next one is anything like the first, then I think it'll be the last.
Audiobook review: The narrator's voice was semi-robotic. It was weird because her reading of the dialogue was pretty decent. With the exception of the men's voices, I thought she did a pretty good job. But reading everything else, oh my...
Cannot stand this narrator! Had to stop listening
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    Using a different narrator.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The most interesting was the mystery and the least interesting was the love triangle.
How could the performance have been better?
The biggest issue I had was that, when she did the male voices, they were so low I couldn't hear them so I increased volume, but then it was too loud when she did Kathleene's voice. Male voices were terrible.

BEST book in the entire series.
What made the experience of listening to The Whole Enchilada: A Novel of Suspense the most enjoyable?
Great story. The book kept my attention from the beginning to the end. Love this series but the author really went the extra mile with this one.
I enjoyed the "puzzle" within the story, the review of history for the main character and the way it was all tied up in the end.
BY THE WAY....SPOILERS......SO HAPPY with how this book ended. I for one have been waiting for this to happen in the storyline for a long time. Great way to bring it about.
Very touching.....I laughed....then I cried (with joy) for Goldie.
What other book might you compare The Whole Enchilada: A Novel of Suspense to and why?
Perhaps this is comparable to the book (can't remember the title of the specific book in the series) in which Goldie's first husband the JeRK was murdered.
Which character as performed by Barbara Rosenblat was your favorite?
Toss up between Marla and Goldie. Love em both.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end. SPOILERS.....the end was such a wonderful surprise and sweet gift the author gave us. Such a great way to end the story.
    Any additional comments?
Read it or listen to it especially if you have read prior books in the series. This is the BEST one thus far. Thank you Diane Mott-Davidson for this one!
    Disappointing
I've read all the books in this series, and was looking forward to this new release. What a huge disappointment. I've tried twice, and just can't finish it; it just doesn't hold my interest.
The plot is thin, and presented in a scatter-gun manner. The details are uninteresting: the whodunnit doesn't beg to be solved.
The characters are similarly uninteresting. Goldy, always a scatter brain, is no longer charmingly so; she's just irritatingly stupid.
The performance is similarly annoying. The sotto voce so often used is just boring.
Goldy has been a favorite for light reading since I picked up the first audiobook. This was to be a swing book between heavier reading, but I couldn't force myself to finish it.

    some strong elements, but....
In the beginning I was thinking I'd found a great new author for my collection. A strong main character and a good plot line in the first few chapters soon devolved into an overly detailed mess. The constant back and forth inside the mind of the female protagonist soon became tiring. As did the moody non-communicative 'mentor' Jack. The protagonists patience with and submission to this character became tiresome as well. If three or four hours had been eliminated from this selection this might have been an excellent listen. As it was, it became a tiresome slog through the underbelly of criminal society. Ms. Armstrong is a talented writer and the book was well narrated. Hopefully her next mystery book will avoid the short comings of Exit Strategy.
    Breathtaking!
Would you consider the audio edition of Exit Strategy to be better than the print version?
Jennifer Ikeda does such an outstanding job on this that I can't imagine it without her voice. She does everyone so well, including the male characters, that I'm searching for more of her work.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Exit Strategy?
When Jack makes Nadia hot chocolate.
What does Jennifer Ikeda and Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She's the perfect voice for Nadia, helping you get into the complicated heart and soul and mind of a contract killer, plus her Irish brogue for Jack is downright sexy.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The scene when Jack's leaning over her and she begins to realize she's attracted to him. Plus the scene in the closet.
    Any additional comments?
This is violent, fascinating, angst, funny, and the romance is so subtle it's deliciously addictive. Jennifer Ikeda does a great job of bringing out out a wonderful story, and Richard Ferrone's villain and victim POV are excellent as well.
    Bad editing
The very very long pauses throughout every part of the story were distracting and annoying. I kept thinking my phone died. It was in the middle of the sentence sometimes. I have listened to many other books narrated by this same person and they have been great. Not sure what happened here.
    I liked it but...
I thought the story was GREAT! I even enjoyed the swap between readers. What I did NOT like was the micro pauses that happened through out the reading. I feel it was an editing issue. And really ruined the flow of the book.
    Much Melodrama
The breathy narration and melodramatic story line were just too much.

    Compelling and deliciously creepy
I've been a regular reader of Anne Frasier's thrillers for as long as she's been writing them. What a happy surprise to see that Hush has made its way to audio!
Narrator Emily Beresford convincingly brings Frasier's characters to life with distinct voices for all. It's a tautly written serial killer police procedural, an intelligent and meaty story. Frasier's hero and heroine are refreshingly human; a welcome change from the stick figure kickass heroine and waxed-torso-of-steel hero so prevalent in recent romantic suspense.
I'd love to see more of Frasier's suspense brought to audio. Ditto her romances written as Theresa Weir.
Review copy provided by the author.
    Ehh, it's alright
    Any additional comments?
The narrator actually did a fantastic job.. she was very enthusiastic, and made the creepiness come alive in the book... However, I wasn't a fan of how many characters there were in the book, because it just jumped around too much.
I also noticed that I started losing interest about half way through, but I didn't want to quit without finding out the end since I paid for it. I would not have paid for it if I had known how it would be. It just wasn't all that interesting to me.
    Hush was an excellent listen!
What did you love best about Hush?
The story-it was a different and interesting take on serial killer and capture. Also like to side stories. the characters were fleshed out pretty well and engaging.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Without giving it away-when one of the cops "woke up"
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I cringed a couple of times.
    Any additional comments?
I felt the beginning was VERY slow and the mixture of first and last name use was confusing. Especially in the beginning.
    Disjointed
Where does Hush rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
There's so much potential in this story, but ultimately it felt like a puzzle that never quite fit together. It's disjointed and skips around a lot and leaves this listener feeling unfocused.
Has Hush turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No. I like the genre.
Which character as performed by Emily Beresford was your favorite?
Emily did a good job with her narration. Some of the characters were difficult to distinguish if there were several in a conversation. She has a pleasant voice and is suited to this genre.
Not finished, and Not Going to Bother
Painful. This book is really lame - at least for me. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a weak and unbelievable story that's mushy with romance.

    Not a stand out...
I have always enjoyed this series and I suppose I did this time with some minor reservations. It dragged in parts and could have done with some clever editing.
I think I probably enjoyed the storyline behind the main plot - which describes the private lives of both Pescoli and Alverez, the two main detective characters - more than the actual plot surrounding the killer which did not raise my pulse rate at all.
The narrator performed the story well however the volume of her voice fluctuated between breathy and barely audible to normal and proved frustrating at times. All in all, I'd rate this book as an average thriller and 3/5 stars I gave it reflects this.
    This is a great series!
If you could sum up Ready to Die in three words, what would they be?
    Television Series Material!
Because these books would make an awesome tv series like in the old days when they had a mystery hour or even a movie.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat, especially the twist.....I don't want to say much so I don't ruin it for others who have not read these books yet.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I don't care for the narrator....she would be great, if she quit making the voices with the accents, which by the way were very inconsistent. I liked the narrator of the first 3 books so much better!!! His voice was made for these books.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    I like the entire book!!!
    I loved it!
The narrator really brings the characters to live! Loved the twists and turns the book had to offered. Which kept me fully engaged from start to finish.
can't wait for more in this series!
as always this continuing series keeps me listening and looking forward to the next!! even though each one has a thrilling conclusion, the continuing story line makes me look forward to the next in the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
Edgar finalist Paul Doiron's superb new novel featuring Game Warden Mike Bowditch and a beautiful, enigmatic woman whose mission to save the Maine wilderness may have incited a murder.
On an unseasonably hot October morning, Bowditch is called to the scene of a bizarre crime: the corpses of seven moose have been found senselessly butchered on the estate of Elizabeth Morse, a wealthy animal rights activist who is buying up huge parcels of timberland to create a new national park.
What at first seems like mindless slaughter - retribution by locals for the job losses Morse's plan is already causing in the region - becomes far more sinister when a shocking murder is discovered and Mike's investigation becomes a hunt to find a ruthless killer. In order to solve the controversial case, Bowditch risks losing everything he holds dear: his best friends, his career as a law enforcement officer, and the love of his life.
The beauty and magnificence of the Maine woods is the setting for a story of suspense and violence when one powerful womans missionary zeal comes face to face with ruthless cruelty.

    Riveting!
Love the story Paul! Your characters feel so real! The narrator did an amazing job with all the characters he had to keep track of!
    Hackneyed prose & dialog-Stereotype characters-DNF
I started this because of complimentary comparisons with C.J. Box and Joe Pickett. For me, it isn't even close. I found the protagonist, game warden Mike Bowditch immature and irritatingly whiny. His dialog quickly became predictable as well as the personalities of the other characters. The overdrawn conflict between the "tree hugger," former hippy, wealthy landowner and local hunters and those economically dependent on them. Does she have to be so dislikable as to have no allies, even though she wants to create a National Park? Even if she doesn't like or trust government in general or state Department of Natural Resources in particular, why isn't she working with NGO's such as the The Nature Conservancy, the Environmental Defense Fund, or more radical groups such as PETA or Greenpeace? I invested about two hours of listening, in part because I found Henry Leyva such a good reader, before giving up.
Another great story in this series
This is an awesome series, love the writer. A must read if you like Joe Picket or Longmire!
    Series Only Gets Better
This is the best book in the series so far (I am listening to them in order). This story had more depth than the others and the character development exceeded my expectation based on the writer's previous books. The main character is further developed, showing a depth and maturity not seen in the prior books.Although the end was predicable, the route included twists, turns and detours not expected.
    Getting a little dark
I'm ready go a positive turn in Mike's life! Regardless of the solitude and dark mood the stories are good!

Series Got Much Better with Book # 5
I was not thrilled with books 3 and 4 in the series, but this story was probably the best so far. I enjoy Bruno for his love of simple pleasures (food, wine, beauty, animals). He is the perfect Chief of Police for a small country town in France. I have learned so much French history and geography as he covers subjects that are not just about the World Wars or Impressionism.
The cases, quirky characters, and place all make for great detective stories with lots of warmth and charm with some danger thrown in now and then. These stories are comparable, but not as good as, the Louise Penny series set in Three Pines, Quebec. To be honest, the cases are not hard to solve, but an occasional twist is thrown in that I am not expecting. I have seen much improvement to the story structure with this fifth book.
I enjoy the narrator as he adds more charm to the stories. I have already loaded Book 6 and am ready to go.
    Walker does it again
    Another fabulous Bruno adventure.
Great series; great book; great food; great characters; great narration. I just want Bruno to finally settle on one woman. :-)
My first Bruno mystery. Excellent story.
Very enjoyable. Rich in tradition and history. I'm adding Martin Walker to my reading list.
I love Bruno. even if he is French. LOL. JK
I just love this series. I have my sister listening to it too. She loves it. I cried when Gigi passed 2 books ago. didn't want to spoil that. I will be sad when I come to the end of this series.
    Fascinating story
This was well written and captivating. There was rather a lot of sordid sexual imagery that I didn't like it because the book has some sex-related themes or I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

    Fun ride, good twists
How many different crime fighter stories can there be where multiple factors collide in a believable way? Well, now there is one more and it's a good one. As soon as the story began I was invested and interested to see how the different stories were going to collide. The story did not disappoint. It was creative, with some great twists.
The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the male narrator, Jay Snyder. The female wasn't great either, but it felt like she got better as the story went on and she became nicely invisible. Snyder though was overly dramatic to the point of making the listen less enjoyable. There were several moments when I thought, "oh, that was lame" and at first thought it was badly written, then I realized that if those moments hadn't been read by someone who was massively overacting, they might have been funny and endearing, instead, they came across as just bad.
There is also quite a bit of dramatic music and some sound effects like footsteps which were really jarring at first. I have never listened to a book on Audible that included those. I got used to them, and while I don't think they added to the story, for me, they weren't a negative.
This is a light summer listen. There are a lot of those out there, but this one is smart, fun, and worthy of investing the time. I recommend.
    Good first half
I really enjoyed Patterson's earlier work and maybe it was more his co-author's style but I only cared for the first part of this book, an interesting story and good background. The narration was okay, and then..... The story split, it seemed like filler, what was starting to be a great, interesting story ended up splintering and pulled in too many directions.
"So worried about the kids, and going to ...??..".....It just fell into the abyss along with several other started story lines, and if I'm not mistaken a villain may have changed genders, or were we to assume a costume? Not quite sure. Too many holes for me.
The narration was so over dramatic towards the end my family asked me what I was listening to. It felt similar to an old radio show. Dun..dun..dun..... Likable enough characters but the first half was much better than the last.
Could have been a really great story line if it was a little more serious and stayed more on track.
