The Violinist

I will say right at the start of this short review that Der Geiger (The Violinist) disappointed. It is a wide-ranging theme, modern-day with a touch of history thrown in, covering the search for family roots and a violin which, to the last member of the family, means a great deal.

The story, however, leaves much to be desired: a lack of depth in many parts; jumping back and forth from one story to another without adequate chapter headings; characterization which tells us next to nothing about the characters.

And yet, the theme is a good one. A family split through the machinations of power in the Soviet Union, thrown out of society and cast out into the wilderness of a life in the Gulag, a life outside of society. A single instrument, the violin, which holds the family together over many years and the desire to discover what happened decades before, who was responsible for the destruction of several lives. There are moments when the story comes together very well indeed, but they are not often enough to hold the attention for more than a single chapter, and the jumping from one period to another without an indication of when the story takes place - only the first two chapters are graced with a date as chapter heading - confuses and irritates.

Mechtild Borrmann is undoubtedly a good writer, and has been recognized as such with the Deutschen-Krimi_Preis for her first work, but this new work fails to live up to the genre. It misses the crime as much as the historical through a lack of depth, a lack of feeling, a lack of recognition for the personalities of those depicted.

enjoyed the story

Love dogs, loves chocolate

JoAnna really knows how to create interest in her characters as well as the surroundings that they interact in. This story is set in the same town that we have been introduced to before, but we get another guided tour of new and interesting places in the town and surrounding area. I loved the way the chocolate making is made interesting as well as entertaining. The plot twists make it impossible to know who is guilty of the crime. I really enjoy the Chocolate Chat's that are in between some of the chapters. Makes the setting even more believable.

Fun series!

I read the sixth book first and then purchased the first five and I highly recommend this "cozy mystery" series as engaging, fun and even poignant and touching at times. I tend to guess the outcome fairly early with this series, but it really doesn't detract at all from the reading experience and finding out the details of how it all fits together is always enjoyable.

I read so much about those chocolates and the main character's favorites that I went ahead and ordered from the Dallas company upon which the chocolate company in this series is based. Fun! :-)

Poor narration detracts from enjoyment of story

What did you like best about Murder as a Second Language? What did you like least?

I am a great fan of Joan Hess.I have reread and listened to all her books more than once. All her previous recorded books were a pleasure to listen to - it was with this book I realized the extent to which the skills of the narrator are crucial to that enjoyment.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Not sure I can finish it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Since there is little variation in the narrator's pitch, it is difficult to distinguish characters. Only those with accents are clearly identifiable.Also, at times the narrator reads at such a fast rate it is difficult to follow the story. Much of the reading is in a monotone. The characters lacked their "voices" - and the humor in the author's writing was substantially diminished. I think I would rather read this book than listen to it. I don't think this narrator enjoyed the book. .

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Not sure.

like the stories hate the narrator

I enjoy the story and the characters but strongly dislike the narrator. Her voice grates on my nerves and I find I have to take a break from listening to the story because I keep getting irritated and snapping at people around me. I am reading one of the books on my kindle and I am not finding the same problem with irritation so I have to put it down to the narrator. I think I will continue the series in the written version and give up on the audible version.

just as good as the 1st

Publishers summary is good idea of the storyline.

I really enjoyed the continuing character development and interwoven storylines. Past present, different walks of life. A nice change from serial killers r us. A real mystery book that doesnt try to be too deep and brooding and has moments of humor.

Jasmine continues to impress me as a a herione, not some glamorous unrealistic hollywood sterotype and not some uber tough chick.

Great listen unless you have a hard time with accents. I enjoyed wvwry minute.

Would you listen to When the Devil Drives again? Why?

Yes. I love Hilary MacLean's performance and would gladly listen to her read this again. Also, the descriptions and dialogue in this book are wonderful.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

This is a very entertaining book with several twists and turns. I will say that I figured out one aspect of the story but not quickly. Another of the author's surprises caught me off guard. In much the same way that one might expect for an Agatha Christie mystery, there are plenty of suspects so the author doesn't make it easy for you to figure out the ending.

What does Hilary MacLean bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The author is from Scotland and the story takes place in Glasgow. Hilary MacLean's performance makes you feel as if you have traveled to Scotland and are listening in on local happenings. She brings the story and the characters to life. If you were to sit down and read this book you would miss out on that aspect. It is important to note however that while the book is written with plenty of Scottish slang, it is very easy to understand.

Not Ian McShane

I have read several Lovejoy books in the dim and distant past, and have all the DVDs of the TV series as well.

I had forgotten just how different the TV version was from the book. Lovejoy is not a loveable rogue in the books so if you're expecting him to be like Ian McShane then you're in for a disappointment. The books are far darker, indeed right at the beginning of this one we have Lovejoy hitting a woman to shut her up, so do listen to the sample to see if the books appeal.

Once I'd got used to the change of style again, (especially the 'voices') I enjoyed listening to it, but if you like a cheeky chappie, then this might not be for you.

Brilliant character, almost brilliant narration

Would you consider the audio edition of The Judas Pair to be better than the print version?

Books like this one, with a larger-than-life central character, really benefit from the treatment of a good narrator. You just don't get as much from the page.

What other book might you compare The Judas Pair to, and why?

The Lovejoy series can't exactly be compared to anything else, they have such a distinct identity and style.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The ending, though a little tricksy on the first listen as it all happens quickly, is wonderfully set up and a great resolution to the book.

At first, I was disappointed. Michael Fenton Stevens does a good job but for me Christopher Kay is the absolute perfect narrator and I'll probably return to the older versions of the audiobooks as Kay's voice and delivery is unmatchable.

That said, Fenton Stevens won me over and also has his own appealing take on this brilliant character.

The reader captures the essence of lovejoy and brings the books to life so the stories are fresh and irresistible.

Another Fantastic Book

I can't wait for the next book, Mary Anna Evans has to be one of the most loved authors of her genre.

Love the story line and the characters. Can't wait to start the next book in the series.

Excellent addition to the series

I have listened to all of the books in the Faye Longchamp series. Each is better than the one before. The characters and plot are likeable and realistic. The plot flows at a good pace so you never get bored. I strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a little history mixed in with their mysteries.

galloping good mystery

I loved it, the characters were clear and the story was interesting. I especially loved the interaction with the police chief.

Bailey Ruth come through again

Carolyn Hart continues to entertain with her wonderful Bailey Ruth series. With wit and her willingness to skirt the rules she carries on no matter the obstacles . Ann Marie Lee is a joy to listen to. She manages to carry off the change in voices believable.

Bailey Ruth does it again

Dearly departed Bailey Ruth is back in Adelaide, her hometown, for another emissary assignment - but the details aren't quite clear. Normally Wiggins, the head of the Department of Good Intentions, gives Bailey Ruth detailed instructions but this time, she didn't even see Wiggins before her departure. She soon learns who she is there to protect and as usual, Bailey Ruth isn't very adept at keeping the precepts, especially the one on not appearing unless it is absolutely necessary. So when Bailey Ruth tries to disappear and finds she can't, she knows that she is stuck on earth and Wiggins has no idea she is there.

No, while the earlier book were "light & rather cute." this one was just tediouwl

No! I can't imagine this as a movie. The story world not hold my attention.

I wasn't sure where this series was going to go, but I did not expect a "rogue" emissary. Better that the rogue stayed away. This is the last of this series I will bother with.

Reminds me of Patterson's "Women's Murder Club"

I stumbled onto this series because it was suggested to me based on other purchases I made in this category and I fell in love with these ladies. They remind me of the Womens Murder Club but based in a small town. Guess the small town makes this a cozy" series. The characters are real whether in a large or small city. I have become a fan.

The women are strong and interesting, and the mystery is intriguing. If you're looking for interesting characters and a solid mystery that pushes beyond traditional cozies, then you'll enjoy Scrapbook of Secrets and the chapters are short for bedtime reading.

The book gets off to a fast start with a stabbing and the murder of a young mother, Maggie Rae. The morning after her death all of her photos, letters, notes and scrapping supplies were found dumped on the curb outside of her home. The scrapbook ladies just could not imagine who or why anyone would do such a thing and took all of the mementos and supplies. As a scrapbooker, I loved the way the author wove the story of Maggie Raes life and death into the scrapbooks that were being put together by this group of ladies for the womans children and husband. The scrapbooking is NOT the central part of the book but rather a backdrop. As the women work and talk other interesting things come to light that are happening to other people in the community and surrounding area. And who stabbed Bea?

You will quickly get caught up in the story and the diverse lives of the women. Good thing I was listening to it as I worked in the garden or everything would have been put on hold.

suprizingly suspenseful with humor

I was surprised of the complex plot mystery and the characters and issues all balanced with humor not my regular type of book I enjoyed it

The narrator was exceptionally annoying- bad accents and odd pauses like she was learning to read. Very stilted. The story was not that intriguing and the characters all were stereotypes. Buy only if you're stuck in a traffic jam

Waste of money

I bought this book because it was on sale. What a Waste!!! The characters were flat and superficial. I couldn't get beyond the first five chapters.

Narrator is awful

If I wasn't so interested in where the story was going I would have given up on this one.
