Publisher's Summary:

Secretly, behind closed doors and guarded portals, the mysterious Black Power of Zaava spread its hidden terror throughout America. What evil force was behind the destruction of churches; the wholesale disappearance of entire congregations? What sinister spell had fallen upon American men and women to make them hurl themselves into white-hot flaming furnaces? A trap worse than death is laid for Operator 5 when, in a final effort to combat this monstrous hidden power, he makes his way alone into the cavern of the damned!

From out of the pages of Operator #5 magazine steps a dramatic hero who pits himself against threats to national security from all origins. Whether it's a subversive internal threat, or a full-scale invasion from an enemy land, James Christopher stood ready and resolute to defeat it.

In 1934, with Hitler consolidating power in Germany and the Japanese Empire on the rise in Asia, young pulp publisher Harry Steeger decided that the American public was ready for a magazine chronicling the exploits of an undercover agent dedicated to defending the United States from foreign aggressors. With his editors, Steeger came up with a title, Secret Service Operator #5, and a cover depicting a masked terrorist fleeing an exploding White House. Over this loomed the resourceful hero, blazing away with a .45 automatic. His job: to defeat a new invasion of the United States - every month!

Aided by a small group of trusted assistants, ranging from his twin sister, Nan, to scrappy street urchin Tim Donovan, Jimmy Christopher was a one-man defense force. Proud and patriotic, expert marksman and swordsman, he is the best America has to offer in a time of severe trial.

Into this unprecedented crisis plunged Jimmy Christopher - only one man, but a man who embodied the American spirit and stands prepared to perish to protect his country.

From the August 1934 issue of Operator #5 magazine comes Cavern of the Damned. Read by Milton Bagby with single-minded intensity.

Tegan & Serico Bring Us More Delightful Adventure

Would you consider the audio edition of The Eye of Mezitlan to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version of this John DeJordy book, but the audio is very nicely voiced by the narrator, Cat Lookabaugh.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The characters of Tegan and Serico, the dragon, are in constant relationship throughout the story. I don't believe you can separate them, or that they would stand alone in this tale. Tegan and Serico are now a team of sorts, bonded to each other, as they quest for the Eye of Mezitlan. Their conversations and antics are enjoyable throughout the story.

Have you listened to any of Cat Lookabaughs other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to the first book in this series, also narrated by Cat Lookabaugh. She's a wonderful narrator who brings her story's characters to life through her engaging narration! She keeps the listener involved with the story and her energy as a narrator is felt throughout the work. She truly brings the story to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A tale of this kind is not typically a favorite choice I would make, but this narration made the book interesting and fun.

Any additional comments?

Be sure to listen to the first book in the series so you are familiar with the characters and how this all began!

Title: River of Stars

Author: Guy Gavriel Kay

Narrator: Simon Vance

Format: Unabridged

Length: 20 hrs and 48 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-29-15

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic

Publisher's Summary:

In his critically acclaimed novel Under Heaven, Guy Gavriel Kay told a vivid and powerful story inspired by China's Tang Dynasty.

Now, the international best-selling and multiple award-winning author revisits that invented setting four centuries later - a world inspired this time by the glittering, decadent Song Dynasty.

Ren Daiyan was still just a boy when he took the lives of seven men while guarding an imperial magistrate of Kitai. That moment on a lonely road changed his life - in entirely unexpected ways, sending him into the forests of Kitai among the outlaws. From there he emerges years later - and his life changes again, dramatically, as he circles towards the court and emperor, while war approaches Kitai from the north.

Lin Shan is the daughter of a scholar, his beloved only child. Educated by him in ways young women never are, gifted as a songwriter and calligrapher, she finds herself living a life suspended between two worlds. Her intelligence captivates an emperor - and alienates women at the court. But when her father's life is endangered by the savage politics of the day, Shan must act in ways no woman ever has.

In an empire divided by bitter factions circling an exquisitely cultured emperor who loves his gardens and his art far more than the burdens of governing, dramatic events on the northern steppe alter the balance of power in the world, leading to events no one could have foretold, under the river of stars.

Critic Reviews:

"Hauntingly written, River of Stars is truly epic fantasy and a work to savour." (Sunday Times)

"From whatever angle you approach it, River of Stars is a major accomplishment, the work of a master novelist in full command of his subject. It deserves the largest possible audience." (Washington Post)

"River of Stars is the sort of novel one disappears into, emerging shaken, if not outright changed. A novel of destiny, and the role of individuals within the march of history. It is touched with magic and graced with a keen humanity.... As sumptuous and sprawling as River of Stars is, it is, foremost, a keen example of the storyteller's art." (The Globe and Mail)

"River of Stars: Picture Game of Thrones in China: Guy Gavriel Kay's exquisite Asian-inspired epic fantasy offers a fresh twist on intrigue and adventure." (Salon.com)

"This is stunning stuff from one of fantasy fiction's finest. From one of fiction's finest, frankly." (Tor.com)

Members Reviews:

Hard work, but definitely worth it.

I had previously read Guy Gavriel Kay's first book in this series, Under Heaven, which I loved from the very first page. This one took a little longer to work it's way into my 'must read' imperative, but once that took hold, it was very difficult to put down. Because of my difficulty with a distinct lack of knowledge of China and its dynasties, and the fact that the surname comes first - as it does in many Eastern countries - keeping tabs on who is who was very difficult. I purchased River of Stars as a Kindle edition, and found some bits confusing because it's not all that easy to flick back a few pages to check on who said what to whom. For this reason, I have borrowed a physical copy from my library, which made connecting people and their status much easier to keep track of.

When the 'exciting bits' came up towards the end of the book, I was on tenterhooks until the story came to its conclusion.

Blood and Water is an exciting paranormal series featuring a sexy werewolf, a curvy vampire, and tons of adventure. It's told from multiple points of view. The layout is very similar to George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (more popularly known as Game of Thrones) where each character is given their own section.
