La pièce est un succès. Ce sera la dernière pièce de Molière, qui meurt un soir après quelques représentations, après avoir fait un malaise sur scène quelques heures plus tôt.

Well written and well read

It has been many years since I tried to read this masterpiece and found it tedious so didn't finish it. But listening to it as read by John Lee, it kept my attention to the end and made my hours of driving pass quickly.

The FOUR Musketeers

"The Three Musketeers", written in the 1840's by Alexandre Dumas, is Soap Opera Extraordinaire! In his (and his ghost writer's) inimitable style, this classic adventure novel, where revenge and insufficient care for human life are two major themes, stars one super-evil woman (Milady) and 4 buddies, 3 of whom are Musketeers and one - the main character - M. d'Artagnan (whose first name we never learn but I think it is Charles), who is not a Musketeer but a member of the Company of Guards. Later he becomes a Musketeer, but far into the novel. Thus, to me, the surprise was that the story was in fact not necessarily about Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, (the actual Musketeers) but really about the nasty plotting and evil-doing of a very bad woman (known mainly as Milady) and the romantic and adventurous exploits of d'Artagnan. Not disappointing, just not truly about the title characters.

The book is long (784 pages!), and at times too overly detailed, especially during the ranting and raving of Milady, explaining her plots and intrigues and machinations involving a whole host of important and not important people in the early 1600s, during which time France and England toyed with war. There are great historical religious implications in much of the story. Milady repeatedly fails to kill d'Artagnan (a plot feature necessary to advance the overall story). And we find the young d'Artagnan impetuous and (we might say) perpetually sexually aroused by any number of women, including Milady. Lots of people are killed or die in the course of the story. While chivalry is not dead in the early 1600s, valuing human life has not achieved importance.

You'll learn a lot of the history between France and England during that era, improve your vocabulary and have a good laugh or two. If you succeed in managing the length of the novel, you'll be rewarded at the end. but it's the story itself that has value in modern literature. Of course there are sequels, as Dumas was the master of serializing his stories (in the 1840s) for rabid public consumption and his own personal gain.

Der Ich-Erzähler und der arrogante Schachweltmeister Mirko Czentovic kommen sich auf einer Schiffsreise von New York und Buenos Aires erst näher, als sich der Schachweltmeister dazu bereit erklärt, gegen alle Hobbyspieler gemeinsam eine Partie zu spielen. Jetzt greift ein ominöser Doktor B. in das Spiel ein, als dieses schon verloren scheint und schafft es, aus der eigentlich aussichtslosen Situation ein Remis herauszuholen.

Durch das komische Spielfieber des Unbekannten neugierig gemacht, will die Hauptperson mehr erfahren. Darauf berichtet Dr. B. von seiner monatelangen Einzelhaft im Gefängnis der Wiener Gestapo, wo er dem Durchdrehen nur entkam, indem er in einem entwendeten Schachbuch sämtliche Meisterpartien durchspielte, was bei ihm letztlich zu einer Art "Schachvergiftung" führte, die ihn beinahe wahnsinnig machte und schließlich seine Entlassung zur Folge hatte.

Die Partie gegen Czentovic ist seither wieder die erste von Dr. B. Das zweite Spiel gegen den Noch-Weltmeister gewinnt der Exhäftling souverän. Bei einer Revanche kehren jedoch wieder alle Symptome der "Schachvergiftung" zurück, worauf der unbekannte Retter das Spiel abbricht und keine Figuren mehr anrührt.

Stefan Zweig (1881-1942), in Wien geborener Autor, lebte von 1919 bis 1935 in Salzburg, zog danach nach Großbritannien und emigrierte 1940 nach Brasilien. Neben seinem epischen Werk gelangte er durch seine historischen Miniaturen ("Sternstunden der Menschheit") und biographischen Arbeiten zu Berühmtheit.

There are two things that really annoyed me:

(1) The Foreword (from the editor) gives out too much details about the plot. Once you have read it the reading experience of the Schachnovelle itself is spoiled.

(2) There are a number of typos (in particular with umlauts and punctuation marks), some wrong hyphenations, and at least one out of context line. It is clear that prior to printing there has been no thorough proof reading.

It's a shame.

Life in a 'Skinner Box'

I didn't esteem this acclaimed novella when I first read it on assignment in a German Lit class at Harvard in 1962. Perhaps the class met too early in the morning, or perhaps I didn't respond to its polished conventionality, its old-fashioned artifice in that era of exaggerated literary experimentalism. Otherwise I can't explain why I dismissed it so heedlessly. Not only is it splendidly composed -- flawless in fact except for one odd glitch in the 'timing' of the narrative -- but also it should have spoken plainly and powerfully to my own milieu. I'll try to make amends, to give credit where credit is certainly due and overdue.

Die Schachnovelle tells of an improvised chess match between two passengers on a ship. One is the 'world champion' Mirko Czentovic, a surly, illiterate peasant with Apsberger-like monomaniacal genius at the game. The other is Dr. B, a Jewish Austrian royalist, who had been interrogated by the Gestapo following the Anschluss in 1938 and who has now been 'granted' exile.

Heartbreakingly beautiful tragicomedy of old Celestina and her ensemble

This is the classic edition of "La Celestina" ("Tragicomedia de Calista y Melibea"). Dorothy Sherman Severin composed it in the 1960s at Harvard under the direction of Stephen Gilman, the "greatest Hispanist of his generation."

It is a novel in dialogue; there have been many attempts to put it on as a play, but it never works as well as the dialogue read aloud.

I remember reading parts of it in my AP Spanish class when I was 17; I was astonished at the beauty, the sexual material, and the tragedy that tore one's heart out. "Did they really know all that in 1499?" I thought, amazed (hadn't we invented sex and death in the '60s??).

High classes, low classes, the brilliant, corrupt old pander Celestina who misses the days when she herself was a prostitute, beloved by men from lords to priests.

Mosts of the characters meet terrible ends (including Celestina herself); the one who is left to mourn is the heartbroken father of Melibea, who finds out the hard way that the Wheel of Fortune turns to make everyone fall or jump to death.

If you want it to study it might be perfect for you

Same thing with another book from this publisher. I did read the comments before I took the final desicion of buying it. The true is that you have to think why you want to buy this book. If you want it to study it might be perfect for you, but if you just want to read it and analyzed it on your own is not a good choice. It is not terrible as many people were saying is just not the right want for me.

Otro clásico de la literatura, una historia fascinante y fácil de leer.

Muy bien y muy interesante

Más sencilla de leer que la versión con grafías antiguas. Pocas anotaciones para las que yo esperaba, o es que no entiendo bien el significado de [Anotada]. Aunque esto también contribuye a una lectura más sencilla, y menos "erudita".

Sobre un clásico como este, sólo destacaría lo sorprendente que me ha resultado, como no entendido, por el humor y el trazado de los personajes por debajo de sus extensos parlamentos.
