    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
"SOMETIMES A GIRL JUST WANTS THE BAD BOY...
Nicholas Anthony's spirit has been corrupted. A moment of spite four hundred years in the past turned him into an immortal monster. Now he is obsessed by an unnatural hunger, feasting on the good in others while seeking the good in himself. But unlike the vampire of myth, it's not the taste of blood that draws him, but the very essence of his victims. The soul. Fortunately for Nicholas the evil that dwells within him has not destroyed his conscience, his ability to care, because that in the end will be his salvation.
    That... and Regina Miles.

    Romance with a hard edge
    Any additional comments?
I don't think this book got a fair rating by the last critic. I read it and wanted to listen to it again while at the gym, which I do a lot with books I like. This is not really a hard core horror book. It isn't a sweetie-pie romance either. But at heart it is a romance. It is the painful transformation of an essentially selfish man, who has been changed into a monster by gypsy revenge. Wicklund is not easy on him, which could turn off some readers. In fact, I definitely disliked him at first. The thing is, she manages to hook you into the characters slowly until you know he is either doomed to become the most self-loathing creature who has ever faced immortality or the heroine will in fact save him at the possible expense of her own soul/life. And she makes you care. You will not know until the end. Tragedy or redemption, I can't say or you will all want my throat--me too, I hate spoilers. All I can say is this is a gripping book for anyone who I enjoys a good vampire with their romance.
    2.5; unmemorable; unromantic
This paranormal, barely-romantic tale is the story about wealthy soul-stealer, Nick, and, physician, Regina/Reggie. In large part, its about Nicks internal struggle and Reginas struggle as a result of his internal struggle, since she ends up being critical to that struggle. The story was so mediocre, passionless and ho-hum that its hard to put a finger on what is wrong with it. It has no foul language and has 3 or 4 neutered sex scenes, though I hesitate to even call them that. I think the idea was good but just poorly executed. It was .5 level above boring. Still, I give the author credit for not being obvious in which of the 2 choices would be the ending. And the narrator didnt help. Her voice of Regina was bad because it was too close to a little girls voice.
Overall, it was just like the meal you get to give it a try for the first time, and realize, after the first bite, that its not good and its not bad. You can finish it and do, but do so by giving some to your dog and feeling relief when its done because you didnt throw away food. The taste is not so bad that you cant finish it or need something to wash the flavor away in your mouth, but you are very clear that you will never get it again.

    Futile Efforts
This is a great collection. Mr. Piccirilli brings a literary flare to what could easily be standard genre efforts. His prose digs in deep and you're unlikely to be the same afterwards. Highly recommended.

    Members Reviews:
When you just can't see yourself being a lamb to the slaughter why not start a rebellion.
{{** Some Spoilers Alert **}}This Omnibus is a collection of short stories all culminating toward the same ending. Each of the six books centers around a part of a Rebellion against the Gods who demand a Sacrificial virgin on their 21st Birthday. The Sacrifices are the first born of the Supernatural world, for giving up their first born they receive bounty from the Gods which means that some families get more due to their status and wealth while others get almost nothing. Weres, Shifters, Vamps and Witches must all give up a first born. All those slated to be sacrificed have an assigned Guardian Angel to protect them from other families who want to break a families power hold, or just to make sure that virgins make it to the alter intact. Each book is not very long and can easily be read in less then an hour making the Omnibus a great relaxing read before bed. It is an Adult set of books because every book has someone falling in love or meeting their mates, the sex is tastefully done and not overly pornographic. Book 1 centers around a young woman three days from her sacrifice, her Father crossed a business associate who put out a hit on her. While a friend is being sacrificed his guardian Angel saves her from being killed. He tells her of a prophesy that will end the senseless sacrifices of the fist born and they set off to start a rebellion. Book 2 is the actual start of the fight and escape of those they consider their inner circle that includes the Mother of the friend sacrificed just days before. Book 3 centers around the twin of the main character and her boyfriend being captured by the Angel Leader determined to break them down and remold them as spies. Book4 tells the tale of two characters a were and a Vamp/witch hybrid and there coming to love and trust each other. Book 5 centers around two female guardians that search for others to join the rebellion and their history and efforts to save those they can before the Gods have all the other Guardians killed. Book 6 is the culmination of all the tricks, twists and betrayals and help from unforeseen forces that allow the Rebellion to succeed in over throwing the Gods, ending of Sacrifices of the first born. S.W. Benefiel writes a very nice book and splits it into manageable novellas, they make a quick read for a lunch break or an evening relaxation. The characters you cheer for or boo at seem realistic if you can suspend reality and step into a world where Supernaturals, Angels and greedy Gods abound. There is just enough twists turns and betrayals, some that turn into allies. It is not boring or super silly, it really does come across as a whole book if you read the Omnibus but each book can be gotten separately if you want to read it in short bursts. I enjoyed it and have no problems saying it's worth the money to buy it.
I loved getting lost in this story.
Ms Benefiel has a such a talent for character development. Every character in her books leaves me wanting more. The Day of sacrifice (omnibus) was was no exception.

I am about the only member of audible who listens to Steve Vernon. Most of his writing is pretty off key and seems too silly or disgusting to many. It is unfortunate that I can not recommend this book. None of the stories are awful, but none are great either. It does not help that all his recordings sound like they are produced in a drafty basement. I have now listened to everything available at audio and suggest if you are interested, start with NOTHING TO LOSE: THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN NOTHING

    Dark, but enthralling.
Would you listen to Judgment Night again? Why?
Yes. Fifteen minutes in, this narration grabs you and doesn't let you go.
What other book might you compare Judgment Night to and why?
Holloween. Like Halloween, this composition twists and turns.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Pony's manipulationg of the devil.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The shutters coming down is particularly un-nerving.
    Any additional comments?
This piece is very well written and the narration is stellar. Nancy Collins and Bill Kates team up to give the listener some top notch horror.
    Kept Me From Sleeping
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. A very effective story. One of the best horror stories I've read in the past couple of years.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Judgment Night?
    Opening the crate.
What about Bill Katess performance did you like?
    The timbre.
If you could take any character from Judgment Night out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    Really?
    Any additional comments?
Its been my opinion that horror is one of the hardest genres to create an effective and original story in during this day and age of vampires, zombies, and psycho killers. To be honest, Ive been basically burned out with these storylines for the past couple of years. I want goose bumps when I hear a horror story. And boy did I get them with this talein spades.
JUDGEMENT NIGHT by Nancy Collins starts out with the setup for your run of the mill horror movie. Four teenagers from the wrong side of the tracks enter into an old mansion, intent on vandalizing the place and causing general mayhem in the place. You, the reader, know exactly where this story is going. That is until the kids find a human-size crate with air holes drilled into it.
    And then they open it
Without giving away any spoilers, things immediately go south for the boys and the suspense is ramped up significantlyunrelenting to the end.
Theres a lot more Id love to say about the story, except it would go into spoiler territory. Ill just say this
The title, in my mind, has a double meaning.
I highly recommend JUDGEMENT NIGHT. Its one of the best horror stories Ive heard in the past couple of years.
Just keep the nightlight on when you go to bed after listening to this tale of terror.
    Wonderfully creepy!
This little jewel is perfect for one sitting, my preferred seat being in the car. It is a wonderfully creepy little tale!

Next door to us, crowded on the east and west by large houses, was the Mantles' narrow little brick place. It seemed to be subsiding crookedly into the earth like an ill-laid tombstone, and was a sunless warren, dim humidity in summer, dim moisture in winter. The laneway to its back door ran flush against our side wall, and beneath the Mantles' lounge-room window, a furze of moss grew a quarter of an inch thick on the mortar.
    Critic Reviews:
From the best-selling author of Schindler's List.
    Members Reviews:
    Well.. ..I am prejudiced
Tom Keneally writes a good 'yarn' and Peter Hoskings is an ace reader of Australian stories.
The publishers in their summary obviously do not wish to spoil the story by telling you much. If you do read their summary and have an eye for literature, you can guess this story is well written.
If you look at the artwork you will notice an old car and an old plane. If you listen to the sample you can tell it is a story from a young boy's perspective.
For Australians it is a great Summer Holiday listen and for everyone else who likes Keneally, it is sure to please.

    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Harry Stevens inherited his Uncle Henry's mansion after his passing. During the reading of Henry's Will the lawyer handed him a letter that was written by his Uncle Henry just before he was murdered. The letter stated that there is hidden treasure in the mansion that no one knows about except Henry. Dr. Stevens couldn't make out the rest of the writing because it was soaked in his Uncle's blood. Dr. Stevens took total occupancy of the mansion the following week.
As Dr. Stevens was sitting at his Uncle's desk in the library at the mansion he decided that he would invite some of his so called friends over to spend the night and hunt for his Uncle Henry's hidden treasure. The doctor couldn't stand any one of them because all they cared about was money not his friendship. Dr. Stevens said, This is a perfect idea. I'll mail out invitations to them to spend the night in the mansion which is said to be haunted and tell them whoever finds the treasure by morning will receive a $100,000 dollar reward for finding the hidden treasure.
