Title: No 1 Branch Line, The Signalman
    Author: Charles Dickens
    Narrator: Anthony Donovan
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-19-13
    Publisher: Naxos Audiobooks
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
This is a story from the "Chilling Ghost Stories" collection.
A chilling collection of ghost stories containing Rats by M. R. James, The Raven and Berenice by Edgar Allan Poe, The Birthday of the Infanta by Oscar Wilde, A Tough Tussle by Ambrose Bierce and The Signalman by Charles Dickens. In Rats, Mr Thompson comes to regret his decision to investigate a locked room in a country inn, and in The Signalman, the subject of the story is haunted by ghostly appearances that always precede tragic events.
    Editorial Reviews:
The tension creeps up almost imperceptibly in this dark tale from Charles Dickens thanks to narrator Anthony Donovan's tightly-controlled performance. The narrator of the story meets a signalman who appears to be frightened of his presence. After the narrator's reassurances, the signalman calms down and later confesses that he is being haunted by supernatural apparitions. Donovan gradually intensifies the eerie mood of the story, and his depiction of the characters' voices - from the narrator's eloquence to the signalman's rough tones - grounds it with a sense of realism.

    YULETIDE YARNS
This is a 2-cd set with two stories per disc. The second disc has a couple of frighteners from E F Benson; the first contains a particularly interesting M R James effort but leads off with the famous (or anyway once famous) Dickens short story The Signalman. In listening to the four tales I took them in the order they are given, and that is what I would recommend anyone else to do.
The Yuletide is coming on again. It has to share its dates with the Christmas season, but it is a pagan observance, and its special atmosphere of godless threats and unsanctified suspense has thankfully not been lost, because it is a lot of fun over Christmas in the northern hemisphere. These stories also revive the tradition of being read to. I used to read M R James to my own children, but here we are taken back a century and more to the era before electronic media or even radio, and it all evokes the atmosphere of dimmed lights, a crackling log fire and listeners enjoying the unthreatening thrill of preternatural threats to men and women long ago, all with the television switched off and beakers of steaming mulled wine or hot toddy to keep us warm against the December chill now banished outside the double glazing.
It all calls for quality - quality in the story-writing and quality in the reading. The reader is Andrew Sachs, who apparently was Manuel in Fawlty Towers. His voice is urbane and beautiful, and he does not overdo effects or impressions, although he does particularly well with the persona of Julia Stone in The Room in the Tower. If you ask me (or even if you don't) stories such as these are far more effective than, say, Steven King. I am almost tempted to say that the less outright horror they purvey the greater the atmosphere and suspense there is. Benson is a good writer, James is a very good writer indeed, but the king of them all (no pun intended) is Dickens himself. For sheer suspense this narrative would be hard to beat, especially nowadays when a visit to a lonely signalbox at 11 p.m. would spoil the effect because it could not itself be taken as innocent or harmless.
The James piece is particularly interesting in one way.

This is a story from the "Great Ghost Stories" collection.
A spine-tingling collection of classic ghost stories a perfect way to pass those long winter nights! This set contains "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Horla" by Guy de Maupassant, "Sredni Vashtar" by Saki, "The Mark of the Beast" by Rudyard Kipling, "Lost Hearts" by M.R. James and "The Furnished Room" by O. Henry.
    Editorial Reviews:
Short story writer, poet, and novelist Rudyard Kiplings dark tale will surprise the many listeners who only know his work celebrating the British Empires outpost in India, as well as the Disney version of his Jungle Book. Dermot Kerrigan is artful with his performance of the different characters, as well as the horror that builds from a drunken man who desecrates a statue of a god and is then bitten by a leper. Seemingly captured by an "evil spirit", his escape is made possible through a local priests kidnapping. This selection is from the Great Ghost Stories collection.

Great book for beginning ghost readers
Many of these stories have been oft-anthologized (On the Brighton Road, John Carrington's Wedding, among others)....however, there were enough new stories that I was unfamiliar with that made me give this collection 5 stars. "The Water Ghost of Harrowby Hall, although humorous, is highly recommended....and Chetwynd-Hayes story, "She Walks on Dry Land", is also recommended.....
    I love it
I am a sucker for a good ghost story and these are good ones to read at night when you're all alone.
    Alright
This book was published in 2004 and collected 25 works by as many authors. It was a selection from among the 193 stories that had appeared in the Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories, Vols. 9-20, published between 1973 and 1984 under editor Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes. This selection from among the stories in RCH's Fontana series was made by Stephen Jones.
There were 15 authors from Great Britain, 6 from the United States, 2 from Ireland (LeFanu, George Bernard Shaw), 1 from France (Maupassant), and 1 anonymous contribution.
The earliest work was by DeFoe, from the 1720s. From the early to mid-1800s, there were Walter Scott, Washington Irving, LeFanu and Amelia Edwards. Those from the late 1800s to the 1920s included Shaw, Maupassant, Edith Nesbit, Bierce and F. Marion Crawford, with token humor provided by Jerome K. Jerome and John Kendrick Bangs. For the period from 1930s to the mid-1960s, no pieces were selected. Representing the tail end of the 1960s was an early work by Stephen King. Writers from the 1970s and 80s included Brian Lumley, Ramsey Campbell, Tina Rath, Steve Rasnic Tem and RCH himself. Of all the stories in the collection, roughly two-thirds came from the 1920s or before, with the remainder from the late 1960s to 80s.
Jones's introduction mentioned a boom in the horror field in Great Britain in the 1960s and 70s, which led to a number of anthologies edited by Robert Aickman, Christine Bernard, Mary Danby, RCH and others, containing classic ghost and horror tales, tales from Cornwall, Scotland and Wales, even tales from outer space.

He finally decides to take action - to help the only person he really likes, the autistic boy next door who's being bullied. But, well, that doesn't really go his way either.
    Editorial Reviews:
    P. J. Ochlan vividly and brilliantly performs Cordelia Strube's eclectic cast of patched-together caricatures driving the messy, screwball plot of well-meaning Canadian Milo Krupi's failure of a life. Ochlan excels at the many accents in Strube's modern, multicultural and motley crew, including Cuban roommate Pablo with his endless, humorously hackneyed, spiritual and romantic advice, and the over-the-top Englishness of friend Wallace's mother Vera.
From hippie painter and avant-garde director to HR professional and dissolute First Nations youths, Ochlan's wide range and snappy pace perfectly captures the madcap levity of the characters who rise above their ugly world of perpetual disappointment in uplifting dark comedy Milosz.

    Blood Echo {COMPLETE READ}
When I picked up Melissa Simonson's first novel, Doubles, I was stunned by the sheer depth and power of her writing. When you read her books, you feel a full connection with her characters and quickly become one with the novel. In `Doubles' I was trapped in the basement, held captive with the main characters. In `Hazard Pay' I was by her character's side as she sought revenge, and in Blood Echo I felt so fully the emotions of Iris and felt the struggles in her mind.
I loved Blood Echo for many reasons. A rehabbing young woman in the higher epsilons of society, Iris has witnessed the death of her suicidal best friend and searches for stability as those around her fall like cards. This novel is haunting, with a vamprillic tinge and an undercurrent of the unknown that will cause your heart to race as you work out the mystery of death this novel revolves on.
I could not stop reading until the end, and now I sit in great anticipation of Simonson's next release.
Simonson is a mastermind of the dark.
    where is the ending????
this is a very compelling story with very interesting characters, but I really feel very very let down with the extremely abrupt ending to the book. you are led to believe who the murderer is, but there is no tying up of loose ends or exactly what happened at the end or what happens to those left at the end. I feel let down and cheated and that I have wasted my time for no payoff. with a satisfying ending I would have given 3 stars and maybe 4 if a good editor went over the book with a fine toothed comb!!
    Woah!
First, I would like to warn that this is almost a morbid novel. Although it is very well written, there are many suicide references.
"Blood Echo" is a quick read as it keeps the audience wanting more. I continually asked myself what was going to happen next. The end kind of hits you like BLAM and you wish there was just a little bit more to go on.
    attention grabbing
This book grabs your attention and leaves you eager to know more.....the ending is completely jaw dropping.....great read!!! I highly recommend this book!
    Just couldn't get into it
There was not a character in the book that I could either love or hate. Everyone was just equally slimey. Except for the homeless guy, who doesn't get any time at all.

Guy de Maupassant's tale of classic horror will enthrall you.
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderfully creepy.
I found this book on Oxford University Pressâ timeline of vampire literature, but the horla isnât like your stock blood-sucking vampire from other Gothic literature. If youâre more into psychological horror, the horla is scarier. I casually tossed the book aside after finishing it and thought, âWell that was something,â but then later that night I didnât even want to sleep with the lights off. The best part is the ending, which can be interpreted in a couple of equally chilling ways and will leave you wondering whatâs worse â a monster or your own delusions?
This edition has all three versions of the story that Maupassant wrote. The first one in the book is the final version (the spine-tingling one). I donât know if the other two are really worth reading; they didnât add much to my appreciation of the final product. I guess they were included because the book would have been too short without them. Altogether, this is a very quick read with only 74 small pages. Despite the brevity, I feel that my 8 dollars well spent. I highly recommend this.
    I Heart Short Books
If you like short books you'll love this one. This skinny little book contains three versions of the story.
Although the introduction claims this isn't in any way autobiographical it is a fairly good example of something that seems to have been written by a paranoid schizophrenic. Was he schizophrenic? I don't know, Wikipedia says he had paranoid delusions because of syphilis and committed suicide (not long after writing this book.)
    This Reader's Musings ...
The Horla - 1887 (final version) - Fantastic piece of Gothic horror! I've read Maupassant before but this is my first time reading this story. A series of journal entries as a man tells how he is not feeling well. He takes various vacations, feels better but his illness always returns when he gets back home. He starts to believe he is going mad as his physical ailments lead to hallucinations and eventually he muses upon whether he is a rational man having hallucinations or simply a madman. However, things take a different turn when he believes his hallucination may be real and perhaps his problem is a being not of this plane. A perfectly paced example of the Victorian Gothic.
Letter From a Madman - 1885 (first draft published under a pen name) - This is a mere 10 pages compared to the over 40 of the final story and is only a hint of what would become "The Horla". A man writes a letter to a doctor asking him to be put away in the madhouse and then explains what he has been suffering. Starting out as an essay on the five senses and then going on to the man's hallucinations of experiencing the missing senses, this is not a particularly exciting short story though it does end on a creepy note. There are a lot of scenes and ideas that have been used in the final story "The Horla".

So much action (In a good way)!
So much action (In a good way)!! I really enjoyed getting pulled into the world, and Arthur made it very easy with immersive descriptions. I especially enjoyed the use of the comic book chapters as a tool to get us into the mind of the child (trying to not give spoilers, but it was a successful "distraction").
Frostarc is a refreshing new take on zombies.
I really enjoyed Frostarc. It's a sci-fi apocalypse type story with intelligent zombies and the big question: Who is Kozz and what is he hiding from?
I'm a fan on the zombie genre but feel it is getting a little tired and overdone as of late. Frostarc is a refreshing new take on zombies. The infected are intelligent. They can set traps, tear apart vehicles and communication devices, and they can be healed. Yes, it's possible to heal.
There is more plot and suspense than actual blood and gore. McMahon doesn't rely on shock factor to draw his readers in. So, good on him :)
I liked the characters. Kozz, the main character, is rough around the edges and has some secrets that as a reader you're dying to uncover. There are clear set bad guys and good guys and you really don't like the bad guys.
McMahon writers great dialogue and setting. His descriptions are beautiful. But, I felt he internalized thoughts a little too often, taking the reader out of the action, so to speak, more than I'd like.
I'm not too familiar with omniscient viewpoint, but I think that's what Frostarc is written in. It took a little getting used to, and I can't say I'm a huge fan, but McMahon does seem to pull it off without confusing the reader as to whose head we're in.
There is a cliffhanger ending, so don't expect a neatly tied up story. I wasn't nearly ready for this book to end when it did, and can't wait for book 2.
I'm giving Frostarc 4 out of 5 stars.
    Waiting for part two
Ok I'm dying for part 2! This book has everything. It read it twice since I bought it and the suspense is killing me. When will part two come out! Zombies, aliens, gunslingers and love. this book has it all!
    Great Adventure
Enjoyed this book. Great adventure. Good twists and turns. At first I thought I had a good sense of where the book was going but, after the first few chapters I saw that it had a number of surprises in store.

Serial Killer Genre for ESL Readers
This is part of a publisher's series called "Rapid Reads". These are very much adult books but are written on reading levels ranging from 2.0-6.0. They are intended for adult literacy, ESL or possibly persons simply looking for a one sitting read. Honestly I didn't know what to expect from this particular book with an RL of 5.6. The plot intrigued me and sounded like the usual serial killer thriller I like but ... would *I* enjoy a hi-low book for adults? Yes! I loved it. A very quick read for me but also a highly intelligent, well-paced mystery/thriller (not for children!) from a popular Canadian mystery writer for adults (who I hadn't read before but am now eager to read). I really enjoyed the character Charlie D.
AudioBook Review Stars: Overall: 5 Narration: 5 Story: 5
In the most adult-themed of the stories, itâs Valentineâs Day and the station that Charlie D and Nova work for now has been purchased by a new owner: former escort and now wife to octagenarian millionaire, Misty. Tonightâs show topic is satisfaction, namely pleasing your partner, and Misty, now heavily pregnant is the featured guest.
I like Charlie: heâs a part of the less than stellar neighborhood the stationâs building is in: he knows the denizens and nightwalkers, downtrodden, troubled, not all on the right side of the law. In the years since starting his show, he has become friendly with Doris, an aged prostitute who is known for her kindness and loyalties. Giving Doris the 13th rose from the bakerâs dozen he bought for his producer Nova, Doris tells him of a disturbing groundswell of violence and hatred emanating from another host at the station.
The show is interesting with several of the regulars calling in to chat, lots of music and plenty of frank discussions until a video link is sent: a man is murdering a woman on film - and they are told that another woman will be killed shortly. The race is on to find the killer or killers - and to get the brash, Limbaugh-like windbag into the station to call off his dogs.
Bowen manages to bring in the visual and the emotional in this short read: we see Misty as much more than just a rich manâs wife, and her determination and desire to stop the killer, and to bring the banty-rooster like Ken to heel, are an intriguing and tension filled story.

The man he used to be was stabbed in the head by an assailant. After months of catatonia, Cryer awakens in a mental facility to find that his former life is almost completely forgotten. Now Cryer is free again and trying to track down an elusive killer through his own unknown past. But how do you investigate the murders of your loved ones when you can't remember them? When you have no idea who your friends or enemies were? Where you lived and worked? And what secrets you might have once had and failed to keep?
And how is he supposed to deal with the little man who keeps crawling in and out of his skull?
Cryer is a nobody now, but that won't stop him from finding a vicious murderer and making him pay.
    Praise for The Nobody:
"The Nobody is a dangerous exploration into the mind and soul of man. Piccirilli's beautiful prose allows us to take a peek into the abyss of our consciousness and shine a light into those places that warmth has long ago forgot. You cannot read this book and not be changed." (Larry Roberts, Bloodletting Press)
"Cliches: can't live with 'em but, as I discovered when I read this remarkable novella, you can't live without 'em. Part vigilante procedural part hard-boiled PI yarn and part examination of post-loss-survival weepie, The Nobody is Tom Piccirilli at his uncompromising best. The dialogue is so crisp it's like Leonard on speed, and the second and third pages are the literary equivalent of being hit in the face with a shovel. A roller-coaster ride? You bet. A page-turner, even? Yep, no question. A palpable atmosphere, larger-than-life characterization and impeccable plotting? They're all there. Like I said - cliches: can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em." (Peter Crowther, PS Publishing)
"A revenge tale almost mythic in its simplicity. Shocking, tragic, beautifully written, insightful and nuanced, mournful and uplifting - everything we've come to expect from Tom Piccirilli, done to perfection. From its brutal opening scene to its heartfelt final pages, The Nobody is Pic at his finest." (RJ Sevin, Creeping Hemlock Press)

Sweet or no? I would have liked to see it end differently. More details into the killers mind and victims. But well written as always.
    Intriguing read
Such a short book yet such a lingering memory (pun not intended). How would you revenge a murder if amnesia over the event caused you to not know your own name? Yet this character manages it. Also some insight about the indifference shown to people with mental impairments.
    Wow
Loved it. Keeps you saying wow. Where did he get this stuff? Dark and intense. Dramatic yet ends in redemption.
    good story, powerful
I've been reading so many bad books lately, I was starting to get discouraged - but this story made up for them. A powerful novella about a man left for dead by the man who killed his wife and daughter. He has no memory of what happened or his family, but he finds the killer and gets his revenge. It's a very good story, well told.
