    Title: The Temple of Camazotz - An O. C. L. T. Novella
    Author: David Niall Wilson
    Narrator: William Dufris
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-06-12
    Publisher: Crossroad Press
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Headless bodies are turning up along the Mexican border. The Mexican government blames overzealous US Border guards. The border guards blame drug runners. In a village just on the Mexican side of the border, they have other ideas. There are legends, older even than the Mayan civilization that has died away, of a God. A bat-headed vengeful demon. Someone is fanning the flames of that superstition, and the piles of bodies continue to grow.
Geoffrey Bullfinch, folklorist, dabbler in the occult, and Wendell "Mack" Macklemore, computer genius and extreme sports enthusiast, are called down to investigate. There are plenty of questions, but can they find the answers before the body count gets too high? Is it possible that they should have let sleeping gods lie? Find out in this action-packed O.C.L.T. adventure.
This novella and Brought to Light by Aaron Rosenberg, are the first introductions to the members of the O.C.L.T. team. Next will be the full-length novel The Parting, also by David Niall Wilson, and then the creation of the actual team follows in Aaron Rosenberg's Insurrection. Look for many adventures to come in this Crossroad Press original series.

    Great read
Every one of the O. C. L. T. that I have read are excellent adventure/fantasy adventures. I'm now anxious for more to be released.
Great new series bursts into life
The Temple of Camazotz sees the launch of the exciting OCLT (Orphic Crisis Logistical Taskforce), detailing a loose group of experts who investigate and counter the stranger things in the world that most organisations wouldn't even know existed, and plunges us headlong into creepy goings on in Northern Mexico.
The two characters we meet; Wendell `Mack' Macklemore, a multi-skilled computer systems whizz with an eye for strange goings-on and a computer program for every eventuality, and Geoffrey Bullfinch the eccentric folklorist with a penchant for danger and tweed,, are both cleverly written and curious characters that drive the adventure along.
Exploring what seems to be the return of a particularly nasty bat-headed god, our two must battle superstition, corruption and downright terror as they search for the long-lost Temple and uncover the gruesome mystery behind the headless bodies that have turned up all over the area.
With a climax that hints at the fantastical and mysterious direction the series is likely to take, the Temple of Camazotz is a gripping Novella that will have you hungry for more in the series.
If you like this one, check out the first full-length novel in the series, written by David, The Parting, or the other currently released Novella, Brought to Light (written by Aaron Rosenberg).

When Klaus Von Kroft brings his band to the mountain village of Rathburg to perform a concert, a generations old tapestry of blood and darkness draws about him like a shroud. But Rosa is far more than mysterious. She has stolen the blood and souls of men on the mountain above Rathburg for centuries. As Klaus is drawn into her web of vengeance and blood, his friends are dragged along behind. Can he unravel the mystery of the mountain and overcome the call of blood...or will they all fall to Rosa's game of hunger and revenge?

    Dark and gripping
This is a book for those who prefer (mostly) traditional vampires; you know, brooding but not emo, passionate but not whiny, and most definitely not sparkly!
Our dwellers of the night are, as it happens, rather fond of the High Arts, and by design a promising band makes its way to Rathburg - as the Lead singer follows his heart home for what he believes to be the performance of his band's Magnum Opus.
What unfolds is a terrible plot of long-awaited vengeance, of dark desires, power and control. The townsfolk shiver in fear, and only the band members and the local priest offer any hope of survival as they rush to save their friend.
Written with a knowing eye (or is that ear?) for the soul of music, and all the mountain-bound, secret-lair dwelling, all-begrudgingly follow the head vampire tones of a classic tale - this is a roaring read that will keep you gripped to the final chord.
    Great Vampire Tale
This was a great vampire story with liberal splashes of music and vivid imagery. A story of lust, cruelty, revenge, love, rock and roll!
I recommend it to those who prefer Dracula and/or St. Germain sort of vampires over the more modern types being portrayed in fiction now a days.

How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's reading is flat and lacks any interesting inflection.
    Any additional comments?
I have made myself listen to the first few hours of this book hoping that it would grab my interest. Unfortunately, after days of listening, I finally had to stop. I absolutely hate giving up on a book that others have reviewed as pretty good, so I may give it another attempt sometime later.

    Publisher's Summary:
Edgar Allan Poe's tale of Hop-Frog, the practical-joke-loving king's crippled dwarf servant, draws upon Poe's affinity for tales of vengeance and the horrific.
The fat king and his seven ministers treat Hop-Frog and his female friend Trippetta, who is also a dwarf but beautifully proportioned, with disrespect whenever the king loses his temper. As long as the king and the likewise raucous seven are about their merriment and Hop-Frog joins them in their 'play', all is well. But beneath this lightness, the King has a dark and violent nature.
When the king forces his crippled joker/fool to drink wine, which he despises, Tripetta tries to intervene on Hop-Frog's behalf.
The king knocks her to the floor and dumps wine in her face. This angers Hop-Frog, and his plans to wreck vengeance upon the king and his court are quickly decided.

    Enjoyable Poe tale
Narrator of the story is difficult to understand at times because of his pronunciation of words. However, this is an entertaining story with a surprising (albeit gruesome) ending.

    Publisher's Summary:
An unamed narrator marries Morella, a woman who delves into mysticism. As a result of her experimentations, her soul can never die, but her physical form continues to deteriorate. She spends her time in bed and teaches her husband the black arts. Realizing her curse, her husband, the narrator, becomes frightened and wishes for his wife's death and eternal peace. She dies in childbirth but her soul passes into the new baby.
As the daughter gets older, the narrator notices she bears an uncanny resemblance to her mother, but he refuses to give the child a name. By her 10th birthday, the resemblance to Morella is frightening. Her father decides to have her baptized to release any evil from her, but this event brings the mother's soul back into her daughter. At the ceremony, the priest asks the daughter's name, to which the narrator replies, "Morella". Immediately, the daughter replies, "I am here!" and dies. The narrator himself bears her body to the tomb and finds no trace of the first Morella where he lays the second.

grows to look more and more like her mother
An interesting story, though I'm honestly not likely to remember it. The narrator's wife dies after giving a strange proclamation. Her child, a daughter, grows to look more and more like her mother. What is the reason? And is this resemblance a gift from above, or something else?
Given that this doesn't go fully into horror, I'd have liked to see a bit more of Poe's melancholy. There is a fair potential here to craft a really good tragedy by relating more about the narrator's feelings for his wife and child, but it isn't quite there.
I listened to the free audio production by Librivox. This story is in the public domain.

FIRST TIME ON AUDIO.... An unabridged novella unavailable in any collection!
Tapping into our primal fears of modern technology, which made Cell a number-one best seller, Stephen King sets his sights on the latest high-tech gadget in UR, in which a mysterious e-book reader opens a disturbing window into other worlds.
Reeling from a painful break-up, English instructor and avid book lover Wesley Smith is haunted by his ex-girlfriend's parting shot: "Why can't you just read off the computer like everyone else?" He buys an e-book reader out of spite, but soon finds he can use the device to glimpse realities he had never before imagined, discovering literary riches beyond his wildest dreams...and all-too-human tragedies that surpass his most terrible nightmares.
From vintage cars (Christine and From a Buick 8) to household appliances (Maximum Overdrive) to exercise equipment (Stationary Bike), Stephen King has mesmerized us with tales of apparently ordinary machines that take on lives of their own. UR gives this classic theme an up-to-the-minute spin, resulting in a horror masterpiece for our time and for the ages.

    OK
Full of product placement for Amazon's Kindle, this short story is quite poor, and this comes from a huge King fan.
The basic premise is interesting, but it never really goes anywhere. The ending was frustrating.
I can understand this was commissioned by Amazon to promote the Kindle (you already had to own one to download it though), but I have the feeling this was rushed by King to meet a deadline. The product placement could have at least been more subtle.
    Well read by Holter Graham.
    Didn't grab me
This is the first Steven king book to drag. The ending just popped up at a point which could equally have been the middle.
    What an intriguing premise
What an interesting and intriguing story. I really enjoyed it - and especially the range of emotions and moral dilemmas covered.
Made me wonder - what would I do?
Fascinating from a sociological and psychological perspective, as well as being a blooming good story. Thank you again SK, from another 'constant reader'

Had to read this since it is represented on many great novels lists but can't give it 4 or 5 stars; but I can give it a solid 3.5 stars. No doubt the book established the norm for Vampires and Gothic literature to which it deserves it's high standing, but is weak in it's repetitive verbiage regarding the constant praising of the main women characters of the story, Lucy and Mina. Once you endure that the story line is captivating and well worth reading. After all it is a classic and has been a favorite for many years. On a side note, I found it interesting to go to maps on my computer to locate the area where Count Dracula lived, Transylvania, and especially the mountain pass near his castle. Even though the story is fiction the places well described in the book become real when you see the surroundings and locations on a map.
    The Dracula I Never Knew
On a recent trip to Romania, I decide to finally go back and read Dracula (had to get tips for how to protect myself). It's a really great story, told through a series of journal entries by all the major characters. Like many novels of its era, the plot velocity is patchy. It starts of well enough and then slows in the middle, finishing rapidly, almost in a rush. If you find yourself getting bored in the middle, force yourself to keep going. It does pay off in the end. The plot is somewhat predictable, but that's also because we've had over 100 years to absorb it. What struck me most about the original story is how much I didn't really know it. Rather, I had been indoctrinated by decades of movies and TV series that all put their own unique spin on vampires and those have so enmeshed with popular culture that nobody knows about the original. So, do yourself a favor and give this a read. It's free and the Kindle version is pretty well formatted and usable.
My favorite novel of all time
Don't know why, but I love this book. I started reading it again a few days ago. This is about the 8th time I've read it, and it never gets old. I love the romantic language and the chaste, Victorian attitudes. I love the way the horror and terror of Count Dracula is gradually revealed, the frustration and tragic pain of his pursuers, the cat-and-mouse game they play. Who is the pursued and who is the pursuer?
I've always marveled that there is no dialogue, per se, in the entire book. Every line of the book is a diary entry, journal entry, newspaper article, bill of lading, telegraph, etc.
