More Ludlum than Herbert

Having grown accustomed to the chilling horror stories of James Herbert, I found this book to be quite different than the usual fare. While the writing and the plot might both rate 5 stars, coming from Herbert I expected something different. However, I do enjoy the mystery and espionage genre, and in that respect, The Spear fulfills its duty. It's fast paced action with unexpected twists and turns as you investigate a secret that's deeply buried in the plot. There is no lack of thrills and devious villains, narrow escapes, and adrenalin-pumping action. But it is a long way to the horrifying conclusion in which the spine-chilling Herbert finally emerges.

This book is different and unexpected from Herbert, but enjoyable on its own merits.

Blunt plot fails to hit the mark

Although the topic of modern-day Nazis and the supernatural are great premises for fiction, Herbert's novel is just too filled with inconsistencies and plot gaffes to entertain. The protagonist is awfully close to being a cardboard cut-out action hero (think James bond without the depth of character), and the villains are simplistically rendered to the point of being vacuous proxies for 'evil'. In a way, the Nazi plot-line and the titular spear are mostly incidental props for what is essentially a cheesy spy-horror mashup that fails from the outset.

Then there's the writing itself. I'm just not sure how Herbert became this successful if this is his norm. His style is schlock horror, complete with scenes meant to gross you out (but don't), and laughable creeping ghoul-type stuff that are reminiscent of old Tales of the Crypt stories.

Agricultural at best. Avoid.

Herbert Wades Into Tricky Waters And Produces Another Gem

Horror writers have been using Nazi Germany as a jumping-off point for decades; such illustrious works as Ira Levin's THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL and James Herbert's contemporary Ramsey Campbell's THE PARASITE have resulted from such forays into the horror that was Hitler's Reich. So it is only natural that James Herbert would wade into the same waters, and the result is THE SPEAR, an intense, moody, creepy novel that stands proudly beside all other efforts in the genre.

Unlike most of Herbert's previous efforts, he does not leap on the reader and begin assaulting him with horror. THE SPEAR is slightly more conventional in that Herbert takes the time to set the scene.

London, 1978. Harry Steadman, a former agent for Mossad, is seen entering the private investigation firm he has formed in an effort to live a normal life. His past is filled with atrocities that he wants nothing so much as to forget and put permanently behind him. But it is not to be; a Mossad agent appears in his office, demanding his help once again.

She knew that, sometimes when Mommy and Daddy went out and Nanny Carla sent her to bed, noises came from Nanny Carla's room. Once she'd crept to the hallway and watched, but there wasn't a monster. Instead, Mr. Harper the gardener came out of the room with a guilty look on his face. She didn't know why he went to Nanny Carla's room, but she knew the sounds meant something was happening. When she tried to ask Mrs. Harper if Mr. Harper made noises in their bedroom, Mrs. Harper looked shocked. Before she could answer, Nanny Carla whisked her away with a swat on her bottom and told her she was being improper.

The point was simple, though, even for a little girl like Melanie. Noises meant something, and there were noises coming from the cellar. She wanted to know what was making the sounds. She wasn't afraid, not really. Mommy, Daddy, Nanny Carla, the cook, and the maid all went down into the cellar every now and then, so there wasn't a monster. That was sure. Still, why couldn't she go down? Why couldn't she see what was there? It was maddening, like when she had to stay in the nursery while Mommy and Daddy entertained guests in the parlor. It was like how she had to drink milk when everyone else at the table got pretty red wine from fancy bottles, fancy bottles from the cellar.

She dropped her doll when she heard a bump from the cellar. The bump was definite and real, and it was louder than the noise the branch made when it bumped up against her window. "Did you hear that, Nanny Carla?"

Nobody answered and she looked up. Nanny Carla wasn't in the kitchen anymore. She was gone. She was gone and that meant that she wouldn't try to stop her. She stood to her feet, trembling a little bit and took a step toward the cellar door.

I was expecting something totally different. I have to say that twist got me by surprise. I love it a good short horror story

Hm.

I wasn't thrilled with this. It ends with no answer as to what is in the cellar. Kind of disappointed.

wtf?

This is the worst 99 cents I've ever spent. No build-up, no plot, no climax, no conclusion. I feel like my teenager could have written this, only better. Damn.

Uneventful Short Story

There was a little girl.

There was a bumping noise in the cellar.

Mom and dad upset about what's in the cellar.

The end.

Okay so there's a little more to the story but I didn't want to entirely spoil it for you. Bottom line, the "story" could have easily been told in four sentences.

Borrrrrrring

Not one story scared me. Not even a little. There were a few that made me think " huh? " . Now I gave it 2 stars because the stories weren't bad , just not scary - at all.

Mr. Vernon is a storyteller. These were some good tales. I always recommend this author.

The first

introduction that I ever enjoyed in a very long time almost 12 years, in her intro not only were we given a brief of her stories we got a view of who she is. I enjoyed her stories three is her magic because triple shot will shoot her to being famous. Please keep up the standard of integrity you have set for yourself and your stories

Great Threesome!

Normally, I don't like short stories. Most authors just can't pull it off, and they don't make sense. Not the case with these three! If I had to choose a favorite of the group, Ten Good Reasons would be it. Mike's decent was a fun ride! Now, I have to decide what to read next - Warewolves or Zombies...

Three great stories. The last one has a great hook. ;) would definitively recommend these short stories to anyone looking for a quick good read.

"Triple Shot of Strange" is a must read, I can't tell you enough about how good Tonia Browns books are and recommend them to anyone who likes a good read.

Great set of short stories. Couldn't put them down. Tonia Brown knows how to write creepy and she does it well. Definitely worth a read. I received this book as a prize. I'd have gladly purchased it.
