An Air Adventure

The audio version of this air adventure was absolutely incredible, and added so much to the excitement of the story itself.

Cal Bradley, an amazing pilot, is contracted to fly in the National Air Meet by Speed Kyle - a company famous for building top of the line planes. Speed Kyle, though known for their planes, is having financial problems, so it is imperative for them to win the competition. Why? Because the one that wins, will be given a contract to build the air mail carriers. Speed Kyle knows this is the chance they need to get back on their feet.

As for Cal Bradley, he is happy to do it, as he is dating Georgia, Speed Kyle's daughter. Bradley knows this will be a great opportunity for the two of them to spend some much needed time together, as the competition seems to be a no-problem win. That is, until the event begins.

When Bradley is in the middle of one of the events, he looses control of his plane. Sabotage! There are other not-so-honest businesses that too want the contract, and are willing to do what they have to so they can win the prize. Bradley spends the rest of the competition trying to keep the saboteurs away, and his planeup in the air.

It was almost frustrating to listen to at times, as all we wanted was for Cal Bradley to easily win. But I guess then there would be no story would there. Listening to this one, was almost like listening to sports, so many emotions as you sit and hope everything works out the way you want it to.

So if you are looking for an exciting, and truly amazing to listen to air adventure, then I completely recommend Hurtling Wings.

If you like pulp-fiction, this is a great book. Hubbard excelled at good pulp fiction stories; they flow, there's action, and the story moves at a good clip.

Breezy Read

Very fast paced and pleasant read. Good for one sitting. At the conclusion I felt that I had listened to a classic radio mystery, complete with explantion of how the hero solved the crime.

The biographical info provided was certainly a fan of pulps but went to great ends to boost Hubbard's rep and to me was trying to sell scientology and it's creator. The story ws written pre-dienetics and scientology so they they don't spoil a pretty good yarn.

It's over the top, it's politically incorrect, and it's loads of fun to read. You'll find the story old-fashioned, but it's an excellent example of why the pulp fiction craze of the twenties and thirties was so successful.

A walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson

If you are a fan of the Lewis and Clarke expedition, or Thomas Jefferson and his creations at Monticello, then this is a must read.

Pleasantly surprised

I thought I'd like at least 50% since I've listened to several anthologies Charlaine Harris (author/editor) has done. I enjoyed each of them. Even though I didn't know a majority of these authors. I was very pleasantly surprised. The stories were true mysteries, with the paranormal twist. I got this on sale and I didn't use a credit, but for what I paid I got lots of hours of listening enjoyment. Thanks Charlaine for pulling off another great anthology.

Although some stories were better than others, this was a great audio book. I like that they alternated narrators to fit the stories.

Great storys, bad male reader

I had a hard time finishing any of the stories Cummings read. After a while he just sounds nasally and loud and whiny. It's too bad, the stories and the other reader are excellent.

Meh

The collection just did not hold my attention. A few were quite good but too many made me zone out. Sorry.

Short story dud! Save the credit.

A good short story opens in the middle of action, this one did but the action was uninteresting. Originally published in a magazine, I found the premise reasonably but the character utterly unbelievable. Weiner did not convince me that Mrs. Piper DeWitt is believable. She failed to make her argument and to create any sort of conflict or tension. The 1 hour and 11 minutes were a meandering and rumination that is best left unread or in this case un-listened. The only bright spot was the narrator. Save the credit and look elsewhere.

Boring...

I have had telephone conversations that are more interesting and longer than this story.

There is no real plot or character development. Just a "pick yourself up and dust yourself off" tale.

Disappointing

I have read all of Jennifer Weiner's books, and have enjoyed them. I was looking forward to listening to this one, but was terribly disappointed. It was too short, and seemed to be a quick book that was written for a deadline. It read more like a magazine story than a book. Too much money for too little content

I'm more interested in novels, people who only need a short story would find this one good.

"The Withered Arm" rivals "Fellow-Townsmen" as Hardy's best short work; though lacking the latter's novelistic sweep, it is more tightly written and thus a better success in pure short story terms. Anyone interested in Hardy should read it, but the fact that it is in so many collections - e.g., The Withered Arm and Other Stories - makes it hard to justify a standalone, especially as some collections cost little or no more than this.

This may even be Hardy's most superbly plotted and masterfully executed tale of all; the mysterious and foreboding threads coalesce in a dark, seemingly inevitable ending exemplifying Hardy's cruel fate twists. It does not take on grand concerns to the extent most of his best work does but is in many ways one of his bleakest stories; its vision of humanity headed toward a tragic end with little or no control over events is unforgettable. Hardy's best novels are replete with such drama, but no prior short story conveyed it so fully or well. "The Withered" is also an appropriate close for the book, being in many ways the culmination of Hardy's fiction to that point. It is one of his few works to have central scenes in both Casterbridge - the largest town in Wessex - and the surrounding countryside, while the cast of milkmaids, hanging judges, wronged women, and nervous new wives seems to have stepped out of a myriad Hardy stories. Not least interestingly, though much of Hardy's work is steeped in rural Southwest England folklore, this is virtually his only fiction with a strong supernatural element. His editor and friend Leslie Stephen criticized the element's ambiguity, saying he was unsure whether to believe or not, but this was surely Hardy's point; he again lets us judge. Great faith based stories

These short stories are great examples of faith. The story by Tia McCollars is pretty funny as well. I loved these stories.

Real Talk

All of these stories kept my attention. From the gambling preacher, fallen football player, and the single lady with a good heart. I feel any reader could associate themselves in the lives of any one of these stories/characters. I really enjoyed the southern accent of Daria's mother in the third story!
