This is for young readers, But it was written so long ago that I think most younger readers won't understand it. I bought it because it is about motorcycles and only 99 cents. The author uses different words for black people that are very inappropriate today. And that blacks are way stupider than whites, Also there is one "slur" about how women are the "weaker sex" . The author would not get away with that stuff today.

Tom can do it all, and more

You want vintage stories written for teens? This is the character you should follow, Tom Swift. Yes, people complain about racism in the books but these stories were written almost a hundred years ago. People don't condemn the Bible for reviling people of the Jewish faith because it's all taken in context; well you can enjoy this book also if you take it in context of the times it was written in. Tom is the adventurous inventor/mechanic/fix-it person extraordinaire and has plenty of good clean adventures, although he does get into violent situations. Overall, this is a great series to stimulate younger minds into thinking instead of pushing x-box buttons for fun.

Enjoying Tom Swift today as much as 55 years ago

I read the Tom Swift and Nancy Drew books in elementary school in the middle and late 1950s. So, these were the original books written decades earlier. I am now enjoying rereading them many years later. I can somewhat understand that the books were updated for release in more modern times. In particular, the negro Eradicate character could be considered racist today. However, I am sorry that the Nancy Drew books were condensed. Today's kids should be expected to read the original (or updated but not condensed) books. Low expectations just produce low results.

Buy this book from another vendor. We were unable to read it. The printing on every left page was bad, like they were running out of ink. This could be a one time occurrence, but the other problem is the print size. If a normal book uses a 10 point font, this was about a 5 point. It was horrible.

Good book

Well written captivating story. You have a hero, bad guys and a pretty woman that needs saving, all the elements to a good story.

Hurricane is rip-roaring fun!

Another excellent story by Hubbard albeit far more violent than some of his other pulp fiction. The relentless pacing, grim villians and stark action make this a worthy addition to your pulp fiction library. Essentially a novella, Hubbard had a flare for endearing characters and wild plots. Hurricane is no exception, but as I mentioned a tad more violent than some of the other stories reprinted by Galaxy Press. But don't let that turn you off - this is pulp fiction action at its best!

Exciting!!

Mr. Hubbard has a real knack for taking a character who is so down and out that you could not believe he would ever come up and having him through strength of character, absolve himself and save the day!! This is a great story! Entertaining in the extreme.

Action/ adventure good for a lazy evening.

L Ron Hubbard is an excellent writer. Many people associate him with Dianetics (scientology) He was not a scientoligist. He was an excellent writer that started in the early days of pulp fiction and wrote many wonderful books. This is a simple action/adventure book, a good evenings reading.

He Has a Name, Just Never Says It

Another great outing from the Nameless Detective. This time a collection of stories. Reaching back into the vaults, author Bill Pronzini grabs a few to represent his detective's progress. This is a great read.

It can be your introdution to the Nameless series, or just some seasoning to the ongoing stew that is his hero's life. BTW, the Nameless Detective has a name, he just never says it. Tough and gritty, Nameless cares more than he lets on, and is actually a fairly soft touch under the gruff tough guy. One of my favorites.

Set mostly in and around San Francisco, this series crushes most of the noir-ish imitators. One very strong book follows another through the whole series. I'm reading them in order, and am still 10 years behind. Pronzini is prolific, and expert.

great stories!

Just discovered Bills short stories and I'm really enjoying reading them. This book was particularly good. Don't believe there was a single one I didn't like. Not as depressing as one series I'd read. These were just good detecting stories. Gentle, non violent, no serious suspense, (I dislike suspense so that suits me) ,just clever plotting and enjoyable reading. Try 'em you'll like them!

Why am I paying $4 for stories that are also in other books??

That isn't right...each book should not have duplicates. I like the nameless detective but don't appreciate paying for a book that has several stories I've read in others.

Prime Nameless

Fans of Bill Pronzini's 'Nameless' detective won't be disappointed in this collection of short stories. For newcomers, it's a good introduction to one of the classic detective series of the post WWII era.

I don't know how many people have read and/or heard me recommend Bill Pronzini books, especially the Nameless Detective novels and short stories. Few current authors are this good.

I've just finished listening to this book whilst waiting for 'Close to the Bone'. Twelve stories, just the right length, each story so different yet all connect with each other. Stuart MacBride at his very best. Very highly recommended.

The detail of his stories, made me feel like I was right there, inside it experiencing it all myself. The way he makes his books makes me easy to forget that I am just listening to it and am not part of it

He has a very unique way of telling the story. It felt a little like story time back when inwas a child, just with a lot darker stories

Not really, all of the different parts were great

Cant wait to listen to my next stuart macbride book. I read them all so its nice to just expirience it all again while just listening to it.

Suicide Run

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Michael Connelly is my favourite author in the crime genre. However, it would have been better if 'The Poet' was included, as it is a prequel to 'The Narrows' and should be read first.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

All three books have well-crafted plots. They are real page-turners. Kept me riveted.

Michael Connelly has well-rounded characters. He has a real skill in portraying the human condition. I didn't laugh or cry; I just felt empathy with the characters.

Three LA Cop short stories

This book contains three short stories involving LA homicide detective Harry Bosch. I am a Michael Connelly fan and I have enjoyed many of his full length Harry Bosch novels, which I have reviewed on Audible.com and recommended. However, in this case, I would not recommend this audible book. The reason is that the style is exactly the same as his full length stories and so it is rather like a heavily edited version of one of Connellys longer books, meaning there are some jumps, fewer characters and less complexity than normal. If you are a real Harry Bosch fan and have read everything else then you will probably enjoy these new tales. What I learnt from this book is that (unlike Arthur Conan Doyle) short stories are not Connellys forte.

Even more short story investigations

I Listened to all 3 short story collections back to back to back. Im normally a fan of the long story, where the small side plots eventually feed into the bigger narrative. This collection isnt like that and feels like a group of stories that couldnt be developed into a bigger or more dynamic story. Each short is enjoyable enough but I didnt feel as fullfilled as I do with the longer Bosch stories. Very much worth a listen and Im glad I did as a Bosch fan. Some seriels change narators or use a good performer regardless of context but for me Len Cariou is Bosch, I dont know what Bosch looks like (I have an image in my head) but I know what he sounds like and its len Cariou is performance isnt the most textured but its perfect for the old time detective.
