Blending personal experience and real-world events in a fictional wrapping, Operation Ivy Bells offers a never-before-seen glimpse of these heroic men fearlessly facing death to gather the intel that tipped the scales to win the Cold War.
Although this book is classified as fiction, it is based so heavily on personal experience that it reads more like a memoir, or, perhaps, the literary version of a docudrama. For those who, as I do, love anything involving ships and sailing, (above or below the water) this is a gold mine of information and provides an insightful and fascinating view of life on a submarine, at its most calm and at its most frantic.
There is a lot of technical information, but the author skillfully presents it so that even this landlubber understands enough to follow what is being done, how and why. I found that, perhaps because the subject interests me, the wealth of technical information did not make the book drag, but this is not a thriller, at least in the traditional sense.
When things happen, though, they happen very quickly, but, because the author has prepared the ground very well, he can present the action with tension and immediacy, not having to stop the flow for explanations.
In contrast to the technicalities involved, the author presents the characters in very human ways, and we come to see then, not as moving parts of a demonstration of submarine operations but as individuals. There are some very moving moments, and a good bit of humor, especially in the interactions between the characters, and the author captures the way a good team works together very nicely. Granted I occasionally thought that the main character (drawn from the authors personal career and experience) seemed a bit *too* smart and versatile in solving problems, but perhaps the author is simply describing his actions, and the character is never too quick to take credit for his accomplishments. He is a team player, and often, ideas spark from the team, and he is able to combine them in some unique ways.
The story itself is amazing, more so because it is based on actual events. Again, the meticulous description of what the divers did, and how they did what they did enhances the story and gives in immediacy.
I found this narrators voice extremely pleasant, and enjoyed listening to his narration.

This was an excellent sequel to Night Heron and I can't wait for the next.
    Spy Games
I love Alan Fürst and Le Carres stories but Adam Brookes is my current Best Buy. In the closing stages of Spy Games I knew it was going to end but everything in me craved for more, for it to go on just a bit longer. I couldn't stop listening. I love Adams style of writing and I can't wait for my next Brooke's listen. Richard Coyles narration was absolutely excellent. Well done guys!!!

sorry, but despite the tempting description: No good for me!

I really enjoyed the first book in the series but this really missed the mark. the narration was great but the story was lacklustre. just when it starts to get interesting it's over.

    Publisher's Summary:
Private investigator Robert Brixton has always hated Washington. Against his better judgment, he decides to stick around and take a job as an agent in a new State Department security agency headed by his former boss at the Washington P.D. After work one day he meets his youngest daughter, Janet, for a drink at an outdoor cafe. Shockingly, a young Arabic woman blows herself up, killing Janet and a dozen others. Seeking revenge for his daughter, Brixton follows the tracks of the bomber to a powerful senator's son.
Brixton finds himself digging deep into what turns out to be a small but powerful cabal whose goal is to kill embassy workers from nations involved in the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. Donald Bain thrills again with Undiplomatic Murder, the riveting next installment in the Margaret Truman's beloved Capital Crimes series.

    Simply awful
    Any additional comments?
Plodding. Repetitive. Predictable. Characters that are rather sickly sweet or cardboard bad guys.Terrible acoustics that bounce from one speaker to the other.
And oh, sweet fancy Moses, the narration is just dreadful. In fairness, I think that Dick Hill could possibly narrate a different sort of book - maybe a western- but for this story, his style doesn't fit AT ALL. He makes the protagonist sound half-drunk most of the time, as well as a whining, annoying ass. I kept wondering if I might be able to like Brixton a bit if I was reading the dialogue instead of hearing the emphasis and tone of the narrator.
The female voices are even worse, utterly cringe-making - trembly, tentative and grating. To be honest, it's possible the book would be more entertaining in print. I found the narration so distractingly bad that I don't think I can judge the story fairly.
Many faceted, interesting and well paced
Unlike other reviews of the series since Ms Truman passed I have enjoyed all that I have read. Narration by Dick Hill can not be beat and the characters and stories are well constructed and developed.
Will continue to buy and listen And I do not believe you will be sorry you gave the series a "shot"...sorry
    Refreshing
A journey into good intentions twisted into events gone bad. Just a tad of personal social life on top of government agencies and social experiments, makes this a comfortable read. No great tension or smut. Very refreshing.
    Politics as usual
I I enjoy Bob Hill narration when he has a good book to read and this is a good book for his skill set.
This story could well come from any news service today. Current issues of students coming into a country and developing into long term sleeper agents for groups that ultimately want to destroy the host nation.
This story has character development, and a good sequence of events that help its believability.
    Good, But Somehow Unsatisfying
This story is engaging and interesting. . . focusing on very contemporary issues related to national security. Evil doers are close at hand, and with their riches, infiltrate even the highest levels of government meant to protect US citizens. (A bit too true for comfort.)
My main criticism is with the too-neatly-tied-up epilogue.

    Title: Task Force Desperate
    Subtitle: American Praetorians, Book 1
    Author: Peter Nealen

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Peter Nealen, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 34 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
    Alone, outnumbered, and outgunned.
Jeff Stone and his team of Praetorian Security contractors are marking time on counterpiracy duty aboard a freighter in the Gulf of Aden when the boredom ends abruptly. A major US base on the Horn of Africa is overrun in a well-coordinated terrorist attack, and those base personnel who survive are taken hostage. With the world economy tanked and most of the Western militaries dangerously thinned, the Praetorian operators find themselves to be the hostages' only hope of rescue.
The mission isn't going to be simple or easy. But as events in East Africa accelerate, and outside players start to show their hands, the Praetorian shooters start to realize just what a desperate gamble they are embarked upon and what this particular job is going to cost.
    Members Reviews:
Tough soldiers for a tough job nobody else will do
The original Praetorian Guard was a special force used to guard the tent or person of a general. This group is also a special force of seasoned soldiers, disillusioned by the politics and timidity of the American armed forces, now turned mercenary in order to keep fighting bad guys. They are hired to kill a top ISIS bad boy, and to rescue 200 hostages, mostly military. But there are only about 20 of this force, this is why it is a desperate mission.
We get to sneak, bribe and shoot our way around a couple north African countries, trying to decide whom to trust and whom to blow up. It does get just a tad tedious in the middle, but the action is all good, the characters are relatable, there is intrigue and deceit, there are teary deaths, and real men. I like that it is realistic, not everyone gets out with his hair unruffled; there are real losses. If you like soldier stories, this looks to be a good series.
I would not say that Wyntner Woody is a great narrator. He doesn't differentiate characters much, and doesn't do accents. But his deep, rough, tough voice works well with the task at hand. I noticed these failings, but didn't care since the story was good enough. I will be listening to the next one!
    Murphy bends them over
Action and adventure in the Horn of Africa. While on contract to protect shipping, a group of ex US special forces are asked to find US hostages in Jambutti. Murphy and the CIA do not help the Praetorian's
Excellent characters, great attention to tactics and weapons. I am waiting eagerly for the rest of this series to come out on Audible.
Wyntner Woody is a surprise as a narrator. I like his voice, and pacing. I guess it is okay for actors to not know how to check pronunciation. Audio book narrator IS a job. Do it with pride or find something else to do. Of course the words he screwed up are on my list of pet peeves for pronunciation.
All in all I give this audio book a 4.5 of 5.
    Good story, OK narration
Would you listen to Task Force Desperate again? Why?
This was a good action story about a private military company up against steep odds. I really enjoyed the story and it's realistic approach. I read a lot of fantasy and SciFi so this was a good change of pace. I got a little lost in some parts dealing with middle eastern and African politics and geography, which is a problem with audiobooks, I think.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
In war-torn Syria, the heroes of the SEAL Team Six series defuse an ISIS warlord's explosive plot.
After a meeting with a CIA source in Istanbul ends in tragedy, SEAL Team Six Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Crocker vows revenge. He suspects the men who attacked him and his contact are involved in the latest and most harrowing scheme SEAL Team Six is charged with preventing, in a region that grows more volatile by the day.
Syria's government is unraveling, with the alliances among rebel groups increasingly complex and ISIS dangerously in the mix. Farid al-Kazaz, aka the Fox, leads the most threatening of the ISIS factions. It's up to Crocker and the rest of SEAL Team Six to stop a ruthless killer and keep an explosive plan from detonating.

Now, Mann and Pezzullo use their experience and insight to tell the story of a terrifying plot ripped straight from the headlines.

    exciting book
exciting book looking forward to his next book . Good story line. good story line
Save the world, while your life goes down the drain
Liked the story and how it deals with the world today. Wasn't sure about the 2 writers getting it together but in the end they pulled it off
Betting this is better if read than listened to
I have listened to all the books in this series and have felt mixed emotions about how to rate them and finally figured out why, the narration. Peter Ganim over dramatizes his performance to the point it becomes irritating. He has done it to every book. So while on the one hand I like the story and have stuck with the series, it is over shadowed by my gritting teeth because of the narration. The narration isn't in your face awful (like doing a bad voice or accent) but relentlessly subtle over acting that wears on the listening.

2nd in a series, will not buy part three
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I liked the narrator so much in the first book ("Corridor of Darkness"), that I actually bought this second in the series (there are three total), by Patrick O'Bryon. Tim Campbell's pronunciations, enunciation and character voices were all remarkable. As far as the story goes, it was just part two of so-so reading/listening. While entertaining, it pales in comparison to the WWII stories written by Philip Kerr. I will not buy book three or any other by Mr. O'Bryon. There are much better writers out there.
    MAGNIFICENT BOOKS.
If you could sum up Beacon of Vengeance: A Novel of Nazi Germany in three words, what would they be?

    Sanoooooze
Just so boring I couldn't finish it. It sort of drones on and on and it's so dull that I really started losing track of the characters because I could stay focused on it.
    Weak & Stupid
Hours of everyone guessing just who the killer was, and also the boring interviews on and on. The final explanation for "all of it" made no sense whatsoever. Finally the reader was a very poor choice for this book ... it should have been a male reader, and this woman trying to produce all of the male characters just does not work at all.
    Save your credits.
    poorly written
this is about as corny as they come. groaned at the story constantly
perjaps the author should read some good authors negore trying again
    too bad!
While the author seems to have significant writing talent, she clearly could have put more work into researching the subject matter. Dialog often seemed as if it was from a bygone era. There were many ill ill-fitting details and unnatural male conversations. Speaking of male conversations, the narrator should probably avoid reading male voices in the future. It was easy to imagine the male characters inhaling helium from balloons in between statements.
    thrilling
As always, Savich and Sherlock are the best crime catching duo on print and in audio. Kudos to Ms. Coulter for once again keeping me captivated. She has yet to author a book which I have not loved.
