My Least favorite of Matt Helm SO FAR.
Where does Murderers' Row rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Near the bottom with Cardinal of the Kremlin. Its good. But none of the characters were interesting (except matt) and the tale itself just didnt grip me. It lacked the BEAUTIFUL tension of the other Matt Helm books ive read so far. It brought up some interesting changes in pace from the other books but it just wasnt great.
Would you recommend Murderers' Row to your friends? Why or why not?
No, I would suggest starting from the beginning of the series. It is hands down my least favorite one so far and has none of the magic from the other books before. The other books have themes of dire clutch moments, Matt's pragmatism and smart, simple and believable unfolding of the plot. This book had these things but it didnt shine like the other installments.
Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnickis other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. Just as amazing. He is a fantastic Helm and doesnt sound too silly when trying to emulate the women. His Helm voice tends to melt with some other lesser characters but it's few and far between and quite forgivable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There is a part where Matt get's grabbed and he recalls another character's injury. That shook me up because they did such a good job of painting a picture of the injury earlier. So the thought of it hit me like it hit Matt. Excellent.
    Any additional comments?
By no means bad it just didn't wow me. As a stand alone it's lackluster. As part of the series it's a low point. I get that it was suppose to be different and the differences in tone are crucial to a big part of the story.
    first rate as usual
having read and reread the book, this reading of the book series is really well done, maybe a mistake here and there, but if there actually is a mistake i haven't found it,Michael caine said he memorized all the scripts by going over and over a thousand times, this reading of the series seems to be really gone over the same way, because the readings are so well done!

    Didn't see the end coming
This was a good story and I didn't see the end coming. However, for my tastes, it was a little slow at times as the protagonist tried to deal with guilt of his wife's death. A guilt I never truly understood as he was not in anyway responsible but for some reason thought he was. Without giving away too much the ending proved my misgiving about his guilt was correct.
I'm from Baltimore and enjoyed the connection
Very well written. I'm from Baltimore and enjoyed the connection. The plot was excellent and kept you thinking.
    great mystery read
love the writing style - keeps you guessing all the way - seems there should be a sequel.

    harder to follow
A bit hard to follow with so many different point of views. I don't think it would have been as bad if I was actually reading it. Good story though.
    Love the storyline
Fills in several questions I had. PAX grabbed my attention as a supporting player in the other books
    Overview
The narrator was great. I wish the aunts would've been more involved with the plot. They were like dabs of frosting on a cake... pretty but didn't really affect the taste like they could have. I like the ending but thought it was a bit gruesome when she said she would be doing the killing in the family. Kind of sounded like a strange thing to say. Like the ethics of the characters. The good guys were good guys. The bad guy were twisted.
I hated to finish this. It was great!
I LOVE this series. This is another 4.5 star book from Joanna Bourne. There is so much that I like about her writing. The characters get great dialogue; it's smart and humorous. The characters themselves have interesting stories. And the plots make me really pay attention which I love in a book. One thing that bothered me, though, was the line that included "Maggie and the kids..." Were children referred to as "kids" in this time period? Great book, great narration (which annoyed me in the first book - American voice), and a great series. Pax and Cami's story is well worth reading. I wish it didn't end!
    Love this book!
The spies are brilliant. The side characters interesting and the story captivating! I had to buy the next in the series!!! Can't wait to listen to it!!!!

How fortunate to have such a great copy
The Best Stephen King Book Stephen King Didn't Write
Re-reading this book after twenty years or more it's hard to believe that Goldman was once the king of all media, and his novels and screenplays were snapped up fresh, hurtling to the top of the charts. He is still with us, I believe, but more or less a spent force. Here, in CONTROL, he effortlessly turns out one of the more interesting thrillers of the 1980s, a book that feels like the best Stephen King book not written by King. Parts of it are very much like King's FIRESTARTER, but ever since My Lai and Watergate many thrillers took as their underlying mise-en-scene a government corrupt on the inside with a specialty of bizarre military experiments that involved an absoulte disregard for human life.
In this one--well, it isn't fair to say. Goldman fans love his powers of invention and his grasp of all kinds of characters--an elementary grasp, but a powerful one, like Schwartzenegger's handshake. Here he goes back to BUTCH CASSIDY form to re-stir yet another buddy-comedy plot, in this case a young cop and an old cop, who hate each other, then love each other, that is perhaps the best thing about the novel. I don't think Goldman's true talents lie in trying to imagine the inner life of an ambitious female painter--no, that is beyond him. The paintings that Edith Mazursky accomplishes are, we are told, great behemoths of something entirely new; her dealer swoons over them, the critics rave, but we never believe any of this for a minute.
The savage killer, "Billy Boy," is another laughable cliche, but perhaps time has supplied the laughs and back then in 1982 he wasn't such a carbon copy of every other sociopath. I'm undecided about this and will give Goldman the benefit of the doubt.
Finally, the creation of the tutor, Theo, and the spoiled rich princess, Charlotte, is something new under the sun, and still, years and years after Goldman first wrote CONTROL, this subplot is still daring enough to take the reader's breath away.

    Incredible
What made the experience of listening to The Wrecking Crew the most enjoyable?
A combination of the Narrator and how well the character Matt Helm is written.
What did you like best about this story?
How clever, cold and pragmatic Matt is while still being a human believable character. He doesn't have any obligatory humanizing traits yet never feels like a superhero.
Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnickis other performances before? How does this one compare?
Other Matt Helm novels. Just as amazing.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It started off a little spread out. Then it was a litttttleee hard to follow. However when it all started coming together, near the last third, I just couldn't stop listening.
    Any additional comments?
Matt is truly a professional and a joy to ride along with. The well illustrated tension makes his skill much more respectable. As a Clancy fan, Matt Helm is not quite as technical as I like BUT it makes up for it with soul and interesting yet believable characters.
greatest spy novels ever written great actor
If you could sum up The Wrecking Crew in three words, what would they be?
    great characters/plot
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    constant surprise yet always convincing
Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnickis other performances before? How does this one compare?
his Helms series is always superb
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes and no. I wanted it to last forever.
    Any additional comments?
I hope that Rudnicki will get round to Hamilon's The Interlopers, one of the greatest of all spy thrillers.
    Great series.
I absolutely love these stories. Much better then 007 in my opinion, more authentic and personal.

Patriots sacrifice everything for this country and get very little appreciation. and want no recognition.
    Frey and Daniels' worst work
I believe I have read or heard all of Stephen Frey's books. This one is just over the top silly. It's like he dropped a jumbled Rubik's cube on the floor, it bounced a couple times and ended up with solid colors on all the sides. And Luke Daniels? When I got to the end I could not believe it was Luke Daniels. Usually he's just fine. This time I think the best was to describe it is to say 'imagine a couple 9-year-olds playing Batman'. It wasn't quite bad enough to return or quit on but near the end I was thinking 'Please, God, just let it end soon.'
    ACTION!!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES!! The hole series what action after action, if you like that then this is the Series for you!!
Some of the story did not coincide with the other
Some of the story did not go inside with the other books there's a lot of discrepancies in between each one
    Weak.
Performance was very poor, story shallow with too many references to previous book plots. I won't purchase more from this author.

The third installment in the legendary Matt Helm thrillers
A year after having been reactivated as a spy, Matt Helm receives a message from his ex-wife asking for his aid. The threat is an enemy agent named Martel, disguised as a mob hit man. To protect his family, Helm must remove the threat before his own children pay the ultimate price.
Originally released in the era of the James Bond novels, the Matt Helm novels were considered grittier and more realistic than Bond, garnering them critical praise and ardent fans.
    Members Reviews:
    Perfectly paced. Excellent thriller.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Removers to be better than the print version?
Didn't read the print but the narrator really added to my experience.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Removers?
A scene with Agent Paul. It reaffirms Matt Helm's callousness, pragmatism and professionalism. This is important because whenever Matt is in trouble or off balance you believe it. He does not go for any of the typical weaknesses of "heroes". Not one. When Matt worries, you worry. I never felt like he was cold just to be cool. He always feels human. Just a rare type of human.
Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnickis other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've listened to him in other Matt Helm novels. His performance should be celebrated. He has a very masculine and intelligent projection. He speaks like the character telling you about his life not a narrator telling you a story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The line that was to the effect of "she conceded to get raped when she didn't shoot". Super cold in a very real way. It was a commentary on people not willing to do what they have to and then being displeased with the situations they end up in.
    Any additional comments?
This was a good one. Perfectly paced. The tension explodes and is resolved in a fantastic manner. The conclusion just sort of happens. Things get wound up really tight and it just breaks. A lot of storys have that "HERE IT COMES" feeling. Matt Helm novels just winds up tighter and tighter and tighter. You never know when its going to snap but when it does... wow.
Quite gritty. No flourish. I found myself REALLY feeling up and down with the characters because everything was so realistic. Real hate. Real need. Real violence. Real plight.

    Members Reviews:
Incredible first story from this author.
What did you love best about The Hunter?
The dark side. There is no hero, he is no hero.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The British assassin. Because he is a slightly twisted fellow.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    The beginning
    Loved it
Fast paced right from the go and kept me on the edge of my seat.
Will definitely buy the next one in the series.
Hunter and Hunted. Good action story.
Have you listened to any of Daniel Philpotts other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was the first one. His accents and characters are very good.
    Any additional comments?
Though its not all that this book is about, but Tom Wood has a good grasp of depicting hand to hand combat, he either researched well or has experience - either way the story is richer for it. Looking forward to the next book.
    Overkill
Would you try another book written by Tom Wood or narrated by Daniel Philpott?
Probably would not try another book by this author, but the narrator was good overall.
Would you recommend The Hunter to your friends? Why or why not?
Not really. Whilst the writing is good and the plot reasonable, if not startlingly original, I felt that there is just too much action and not enough intrigue to maintain interest. In fact, the almost constant gun battles and chases are unrelenting and, eventually, terribly tedious. I gave up completely about an hour out from the end when yet another fight and chase broke out in exhaustive and exhausting detail and I lost interest in the outcome of the story and the fate of the main character.
Which character as performed by Daniel Philpott was your favourite?
The narrator played the various parts without overdoing the accents, but the characters were hardly engaging enough to choose any favourite performance from Mr Philpott.
Did The Hunter inspire you to do anything?
Luckily, I'm not given to indulging in murderous rampages with automatic weapons, so no.
    Any additional comments?
I love a good action story - Frederick Forsyth, Gerald Seymour etc.

    Collateral Damage Out of Control
Would you consider the audio edition of Shadow Maker to be better than the print version?
It is hard for an audiobook to compete with the print version. Obviously, the narrator's choices for character voices are not the same as the voices I hear in my head. That said, I thought all of the narrator's choices were good, except for Nick, who I never though of as so East Coast.
What other book might you compare Shadow Maker to and why?
Shadow Maker is a heart-pounding exploration of what might happen when a black ops hero runs afoul of a terrorist genius. The dominoes begin to fall and the collateral damage spins out of control, hitting very close to home. The action and covert ops feel puts Shadow Maker in the same category as Black Site, and some of the more recent Clancy material, with the exception that there is no foul language. I enjoyed getting all the intensity and action without cringing from an overabundance of F-bombs.
What does Luke Daniels bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Luke Daniels brings his own intensity to the narrative and dialogue. He also adds grunts, breathing, etc. that add realism to the action.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The most moving moment in this story occurs in the small chapel where Nick and Drake are hiding out, when the priest stands over Rami and the mother of the murdered girl.
