    Title: The Deceiver
    Author: Frederick Forsyth
    Narrator: Christian Rodska
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 32 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Sam McCready is The Deceiver, one of the Secret Intelligence Service's most unorthodox and most valued operatives, a legend in his own time. The end of the cold war has, however, strengthened the hand of the Whitehall mandarins, to whom he seems about as controllable as Genghis Khan, so Sam is to have his fate decided at a special hearing.
As part of the proceedings, four of Sam's key operations are reviewed: a clandestine mission into East Germany in 1985 to contact the top Russian spy General Pankratin; a KGB colonel who wants to defect; an audacious Qaddafi-inspired plot to ship arms to the IRA; and the occasion when McCready presided over the aftermath of political murder and mayhem in the Caribbean....

    The master storyteller
    Excellent
    Forsyth at his finest.
Left me wanting to hear more about Sam McCready. Narration is superb.
    superb short stories
Where does The Deceiver rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Again this is Fredrick Forsyth at the top of his game. Each story is really well crafted. Very different from each other and full of excitement. All to do with the secret service and the cold war.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character in all the short stories McCready was my favourite. He triumphs in all the stories, and so he should he was very, very good
What about Christian Rodskas performance did you like?
Really, really good. He has the ability to change accents so well. Because it is short stories each story is in a different location and Christian Rodska is brilliant at each and every voice. It makes the listening so much more enjoyable, rather like listening to a play rather than a book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would love to have listened to it in one sitting, but it is 17 hours long, as it is I stayed in my kitchen cooking and baking far too much so that I could listen for longer.
    Any additional comments?
I have over 200 audio books and Fredrick Forsyth is so near the top of my all time favourite books, I listen to them several times and always hear something I missed first time round.
    Not what I expected
What made the experience of listening to The Deceiver the most enjoyable?
I'm not sure how true the characters are behind the book, but they seem very very real and that just makes the book a great listen. It's as though I'm there alongside the action.
What did you like best about this story?
How close it seemed to real life
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
How some situations appeared so normal and then they turned out to be so dangerous. The jobs some people to keep us safe.
    Any additional comments?
Just great, thank you as a first Frederick Forsyth book it was superb
    Frederick Forsyth at his best..
What did you like most about The Deceiver?
I've always liked Frederick Forsyth - his plots are intricate and the detail total convincing. He is a thorough writer who totally pulls you into the plot. This is one of his best I think, almost several stories in one book, all linked together.

    Midnight Sun
Where does Midnight Sun rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Midnight Sun is a good thriller with non-stop action from start to finish. The first chapter is well-written, compelling, gut-wrenching, and offers some excitement and tension along the way.
    Midnight Sun
All of my favorite characters from previous Basil Sands stories. Sweet, exciting, & emotional. A few problems with the quality of the audio but still worth a listen for Sands fans.
    Wish I could return
    Total waste of a credit
Wish they hadn't changed the return policy
    Don't waste your time
    Writer should not narrate
    Excellent!
Another wonderful book by Basil Sands! I would love to see his books become a tv or movie series. Action packed, suspenseful, and just plain awesome! If my husband were to read books, he would love these! I have and would recommend this book to others. can't wait to hear more of his work.
The narration was great as always! I can't say anything bad about this book or any of his books! keep them coming!
    Fun listen
It was a bit of a pulp story. The narration was quirky. I enjoyed the story and the characters that Basil created.

I Would have liked a little faster pace than this. Still it kept me interested enough to finish it.
    A master at work
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Ludlum wrote the book under the name Jonathan Ryder around the time of Watergate. His disdain for corrupt politicians and corporations comes through with incredible intensity.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The conversation with Bonner when he discovers what's really going on...
    Any additional comments?
His writing style is amazing, the words just flow through the story. The narrator who performed the book does an incredible job!

    very cool,
loved it, it is very cut throat but it was well done
might even consider more books by this author
    Fuel for the edrenaline junkie!
In "Arctic Fire," Stephen Frey introduces us to Red Cell Seven (RCS), an ultra-secret arm of the U.S. intelligence apparatus. RCS has been operating for over 40 years and is apolitical, protecting the interests of the United States rather than any one political ideology. The new president, however, is not willing to let RCS operate with impunity any longer and is threatening to dismantle the organization. Certain rogue elements within RCS will not allow that to happen, no matter what it takes to survive.
Troy Jensen is an operative in RCS, unknown to all his family except his father, former Marine Colonel and CEO of one of the worlds largest banks. Jack Jensen, Troy's adopted brother, thinks Troy is just a spoiled rich kid, traveling the globe in search of adventure. But while Troy is off climbing mountains or fighting bulls, he is actually gathering intelligence and using his "hobbies" as cover. His latest adventure sees Troy working on a crab boat in Alaska, one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. But it would seem Troy tempted fate once to often and his family is notified that he was washed overboard by a wave during a storm.
Jack had never come to terms with his being adopted. In addition to wondering who his real parents were, he never could seem to live up to Bill's expectations. Troy was seemingly the perfect son and the pride Bill had for him was painfully evident. Jack thought part of the reason was that blood was thicker than water. But Jack cared for Troy as only brothers can, adopted or not, and he did not believe the story of Troy's death. Troy was a survivor. There was no way Troy would have been the only person washed overboard. If anything, he would have been the one to save the others as he had done in the past. Jack quits his job as a bond trader and treks to Alaska in order to find the truth. But Jack makes some very dangerous people nervous and is soon running for his life.
This was an enjoyable read, fast paced and full of action. The plot was, for the most part, very believable if not somewhat scripted. The ending was a stunner and seemed to come out of left field. I am not really sure what the author was intending with it. It is obvious he was setting it up for a sequel, but the ending seemed to raise more questions than necessary. That being said, if you are an action junkie, then you will enjoy this book.
Choppy in places but overall good read
I really enjoyed the story concept however I think at times the author was looking for page fillers.

Best Bond audiobook - Most up to date story and great performance
This book is spectacular. The best Fleming book in the series. It feels very up to date in many aspects and the characters are round and have depth in them.
Jason Isaacs performance is superb and enjoyable.
    Terrific!
Would you consider the audio edition of Thunderball to be better than the print version?
    Yes
What about Jason Isaacss performance did you like?
Jason's ability to capture the accents and personalities for all of teh characters added so much to the enjoyment of this book.
    Great story, well read...
Would you consider the audio edition of Thunderball to be better than the print version?
I read all the original book as a teenager, what a treat to hear it again in my 40's on my daily commute. Jason Isaacs does a wonderful job.
    Hello to Jason Isaacs!
    Sorry...
I could listen to this narrator for a long time, Great story and perfect narration. Probably my favourite narration so far, I'm listening to these Audio Go releases in order of the original releases.
    Dark Bond
Having never read the books and only watched the movies, I was surprised at how dark and cynical this novel was. It is well narrated and worth listening to, but it is also a novel of its time too.

    Members Reviews:
    Surprisingly different from the movie
Great story with a no less great interpretation from Hugh. Was surprised to see a difference in the final narrative that climaxed the story as opposed to the movie, but nonetheless effective at keeping me interested in the story. Goldfinger is still my favorite movie in the franchise, and the book is by now my favorite as well.
    Bond at His Best
Where does Goldfinger rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It's up there among the best. I've listened to this read by Rufus Sewell in the past which was excellent, and I feared listening to the 'Earl of Grantham' do Bond may feel odd, but the narration was great.
What did you like best about this story?
This Flemming at his best. Bond is on excellent form having been on night duty for a number of months and when he gets his chance to head out into the field again he grasps it. The golf scene is a real classic.
What about Hugh Bonnevilles performance did you like?
I liked the fact that I barely noticed it was wasn't Connery. Hugh Bonneville doesn't attempt any awkward Connery impression, he does it in his own style and it works.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Um... The name's Bond, James Bond.
    Any additional comments?
    Well worth a listen.
