    Publisher's Summary:
Will Marion has two perfect kidneys. His daughters aren't so lucky. Question is: Which one should he save?
Will's 47. His wife bailed out when the twins were in nappies and hasn't been seen since. He coped OK by himself at first, giving Georgie and Kay all the love he could, working in a boring admin job to support them. Just after the twins turn sixteen, Georgie suffers kidney failure and is placed on dialysis. Her type is rare, and Will immediately offers to donate an organ. Without a transplant, she would probably never see adulthood. So far so good.
But then Kay gets sick. She's also sixteen. Just as precious. Her kidney type just as rare. Time is critical, and he has to make a decision. Should he buy a kidney - be an organ tourist? Should he save one child? If so, which one? Should he sacrifice himself? Or is there a fourth solution - one so terrible it has never even crossed his mind?

What would have made The Donor better?
A set of twins who both need kidneys raised by a single man without a job. No money, no prospects. Their mother is a drug addict and her kidneys aren't an option. Dad can't spare two. He has to decide which kid he wants to donate to. One kid is loveable, affectionate and adores him. The other is disagreeable, hostile and hates his guts. Who will get the kidney? Is there any way he can save them both? He considers suicide so that he can save them. By the end of the never ending story I just didn't care. It was too long and too boring.
The accent took me a long while to get used to
Good story line but not that great. The main character was a sap lol lol
    Great Ending!!
Would you listen to The Donor again? Why?
I never listen to any books twice.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Donor?
'The shock' I can't say it would spoil it for other listeners
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Made me cringe at the gaffs the poor Dad kept on making. You couldn't help, but feel for him.
    Any additional comments?
This is one book I think I would have liked to have tried out the kindle book whispersynch on. It would have worked well.
    rather cleaver
    Any additional comments?
sometimes while listening to this one I wasn't sure if I liked it, certainly several of the carachters where unlikeable , I presume this was the authors intention. I didn't understand why the author chose to start the book with the ending, but it all made sense in the end , and was actually rather cleaverly put toghether
    A different book
I really enjoyed this gripping, plausible story, looking at the seedy side of life and real family values. I found the ending somewhat predictable, hence the four stars. Well worth listening to.

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-25-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios

    Publisher's Summary:
The first novel by Man Booker Prize-winning author Eleanor Catton
A high-school sex scandal jolts a group of teenage girls into a new awareness of their own potency and power. The sudden and total publicity seems to turn every act into a performance and every platform into a stage. But when the local drama school decides to turn the scandal into a show, the real world and the world of the theatre are forced to meet, and soon the boundaries between private and public begin to dissolve.
The Rehearsal is an exhilarating and provocative novel about the unsimple mess of human desire, at once a tender evocation of its young protagonists and a shrewd expose of emotional compromise.
Eleanor Catton was born in 1985 in Canada and raised in New Zealand. Her debut novel, The Rehearsal, was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize, and longlisted for the Orange Prize. The novel garnered prizes and acclaim around the world, including the 2009 Betty Trask Award. It has since been published in 17 territories and 12 languages. Her second novel, The Luminaries, won the 2013 Man Booker Prize. She lives in Auckland, New Zealand.
    Critic Reviews:
"A wonderful debut by a truly exciting new writer (Kate Atkinson)
As debuts go, this one is astral - as well as teasing, intelligent and knowing - Catton anatomises brilliantly the psychology of youth, its sexual mores, it's posing pretentiousness, its worries, its bravado - So much accomplishment carried so lightly (Scotsman)
It represents a starburst of talent and the arrival of an author wholly different from anyone else writing today (Sunday Times)
Timeframes overlap and collide in this ingenious ontological kaleidoscope of a debut, but the experimentalism - which demands that the reader keep all her wits about her - is tempered by a real knack for narrative and a cast of painfully familiar teenage characters who are all desperate to be as confident, cool, charismatic and funny as possible. These are qualities that the extraordinary Eleanor Catton has in spades (The Times)
The Rehearsal is no rehearsal. It's a supremely confident piece of writing - the clarity of its thought and language make it a definite contender for debut of the year (Independent)
Brilliant - What Catton does so strikingly, and in such honeyed prose, is to capture the essence of adolescents - Catton has formidable talent (Daily Mail)
This astonishing debut novel from young New Zealander Eleanor Catton is a cause for surprise and celebration: smart, playful and self-possessed, it has the glitter and mystery of the true literary original - the prose is so arresting, the storytelling so seductive, that wherever the book falls open it's near-impossible to put down (Guardian)
    Members Reviews:
    Why was it written
Plot jumped all over the place and didn't really go anywhere. Seemed no point to the book
    Polished but why bother?
Would you try another book written by Eleanor Catton or narrated by Nicole Arumugum?
The narration is fine. I'd have no worries about trying another book narrated by Ms Arumugum. I don't think I'd try another novel by E. Catton.
What will your next listen be?
    Don't know yet.
How could the performance have been better?
Tricky to say how this work could be improved. I suspect some readers will enjoy it far more than I did. The use of language is very competent, as is the overall structure of the plot.

    Publisher's Summary:
After a devastating loss, Jamie Shire accepts a mysterious live-in job with an equally mysterious employer in the wine country of northern California. At Fallow Springs Estate, Jamie struggles to understand what her employer, Akasha Duvall, wants of her and who Akasha really is. As secret after secret unravels within Fallow Springs, Jamie discovers healing by addressing the suffering of others. Beneath an African sky, among the Darfuri people, whose land and loved ones have been violently ripped away, Jamie finds the strength to reclaim her life and the courage to step forward into her greatest passion. Suspenseful, heartbreaking, inspiring, and deeply moving, Out of the Shadows both surprises and satisfies, vividly immersing the listener in wrenching, yet uplifting, human experiences that take place in worlds apart.
    Critic Reviews:
Tragedy turns into triumph in Carlson s debut novel about a young woman who regains her self-confidence after multiple losses and years of dejection. Before readers meet 28-year-old Jamie Shire, she has already hit rock bottom. Jobless, she drinks away her days on her best friend s couch as she wallows in loneliness. Among Jamie s troubles: Her mother died when she was a child, the only man she ever loved wouldn t reciprocate, her unborn daughter died, and she continuously feels rejected by her father and brother. After a chance encounter with a wealthy woman at a coffee shop, Jamie accepts a live-in job researching philanthropic causes at Fallow Springs Estate. Reaching out to the house staff and eventually working with Darfur refugees afford Jamie some valuable context for her own pain; she s able to gain confidence as she learns to stop fearing rejection and start pursuing her dreams. Throughout the novel, the author skillfully creates mood. In the beginning, when Jamie borders on depression, her emotional touchiness and oversensitivity will create an uneasy feeling in readers. But as Jamie slowly regains confidence, readers will also feel increasingly optimistic. Alongside the main character s emotional struggle is the struggle faced by Darfur refugees, although this plotline doesn t advance too far; yet details from Jamie s trip to the refugee camp in Chad the types of beer served at the aid workers bar or a depiction of a young refugee sitting blank-faced and tied to a pole because he might run away effectively transport readers to faraway places. Jamie s story will interest readers, but, with a weak ending, the story leaves many unanswered questions. Who is Jamie s wealthy employer? Does Jamie s work in Chad help anyone but herself? And what of the conflict Jamie feels between herself and the refugees, between the haves and the have-nots? With so many minor questions left unanswered, Carlson s captivating novel proves to be more about the journey than the destination. --Kirkus Review

Emotionally involving, strong story line, important subject
Kimberly Carlson has followed in the footsteps of writers who take us to a different culture (Africa), seen through the eyes of an American woman who is driven to help the long-suffering people of war-torn Darfur. She succeeds in making us care about her protagonist, and her journey from personal sadness to seeing the world differently. She also succeeds in creating compelling characters and a strong narrative drive. I had to keep turning the pages.

"It is the curse of living too close to the soil when you have clouds in your blood."
I am totally in love with Timi, the narrator of our trip to a small town in Uzbekistan .he lives in Moynaq" the sickest place on the planet. He has reserved his judgment on the aide workers but frankly worries about the female medic who often utters"uh" while talking. "Uh" means vagina in Uzbek. Timi has a dream to be the best motorcyclist on the planet, but has an old Minsk. Some aide workers left some camels that no one understands, one of whom broke a leg in a zest for mating. This collision of the two worlds of the villagers and the NGOs is described with warmth and disbelief. This "sickest place on the planet" is portrayed with despair and deep affection.
All of this is impossible to convey without resorting to slapstick or condescending tone but Ochsner has achieved it. It is witty and funny without being self conscious. I would love , love, love to know how this woman author from Oregon has achieved the feat of conveying the wry observations of a young man in Uzbekistan. In fact, Gina, if you read this review, please drop me a line.
Read this short work, you will not be sorry.
A glimpse into a fascinating world
This very well written book offers a glimpse into the life of a lively young man in a distant corner of the former Soviet Union. Caught in a backwater--with little actual water around--he views the rest of the world through the internet and rare contact with Westerners. His ideas are bigger, and at times funnier, than the world around him. The author tells this all, better than I do. I recommend this!
    Good story
This book deals with a small community in Uzbekistan, with as main character a young man obsessed by his motorcycle and influenced by internet.
The author also criticizes, in a lighthearted way, the role of undoubtedly well-meaning NGOs in poor countries. From my own experience I know that local communities are very often not asked about their needs, as is the case with the camels in this story, which are pretty useless.
    Recommended.
    Story slight, but writing excellent
Inventive, charming, funny, and colorful. Gina Ochsner can write and I will look for more of her work to read. The delightfully crazy language reminded me of Jonathan Safran Foer's in "Everything is Illuminated." Nevertheless, "Pleased to be Otherwise" lacks the satisfying arc that such a story demands. I'd push the four-star rating up to an A- and hope for an A+ next time.
Wonderful story, just too darn short
This short is not for everyone, but for those who like more meaningful writing, it is a beautiful and humorous glimpse into the strange life of Timi, a rather special Uzbek kid with big dreams.

    Publisher's Summary:
From Argentina to Italy, the intense, metaphysical and poetic story of a gardener in love, by Italy's most prominent writer. "A man's life lasts as long as three horses. You have already buried the first." Somewhere along the coastline of Italy, a man passes his days in solitude and silence, tending a garden and reading books of travel and adventure. Through these simple routines he seeks to quiet the painful memories of the past: a life on the run from Argentina's Dirty War; a young bride 'disappeared' by the military; a terrifying escape through the wilds of Patagonia.Yet everywhere he turns, new life is pulsing, ready to awaken his senses, like the force that drives his fruit trees into bloom. People and events from the past and present migrate into patterns assigned by a metaphysical geometry. A woman of the world re-introduces him to love. An African day laborer teaches him the meaning of gratitude. In this intense narrative, every acute observation, every nuance, becomes a means of salvation. Using a language that is both gripping and contemplative, Three Horses is an unforgettable tale.

    A novel by a poet
This is a very poetic novel. De Luca can evoke vivid images with very few words. Sometimes the story was hard to follow because it moved from present to past frequently, but I will read it over and over because the writing is so pure and beautiful. It was probably quite a challenge for the translator to capture the author's voice, but he seems to have done an excellent job.
    like 3D narration
Authentic experience interpretation, detailed spatial depiction, like 3D narration; Humanistic issues and psychological attenuation.
"In nature only beauty contradicts gravity."
In prose that transcends country and time, the protagonist is connected to the earth, his world narrowly defined through the soil, the daily tending of trees a nostrum for the soul. A violent past looms, unexpurgated, years of armed rebellion in Argentina at the side of the woman he loves until forced to escape, sailing away with others who also flee the searchers. He goes first to England, later to Italy, where he builds an uncomplicated existence as a gardener, tending the trees of a rich man, drawing sustenance from the land. At half a century, he has come to a place of peace, at a distance from chaos and heartbreak, where his needs are few. Then he meets Laila, a young woman who sells her body but awakens thoughts of his lost Argentinean wife, the sweet mysteries of such an entanglement drawing him into a complex mix of past and present: "Being with her is like life in Argentina, without a day after."
An African stops at the garden gate; the two men begin a quiet friendship as the narrator offers excess blooms that Selim sells in the market. The gardener believes he has finally finished running, that "now my verb is to stay. There is a woman to love." But reading the ashes of their fire, Selim tells his new friend that he must leave: "The ashes see blood, including yours beside it. The ashes don't say love." But the man has finished with leaving, comforted by his work, the growing of things, nature replenishing itself.

    Quite Interesting
Where does My Life as a Silent Movie rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Have listened to 100's of audiobooks and would say this ranks somewhere in the middle.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Definitely Emma~so much loss and sadness. She seemed to be just a shell of her former self. I loved the way she described Paris, her interpretations of the silent movies, and was able to recover from the tragedies she had experienced.
What about Rosemary Bensons performance did you like?
Enjoyed her performance very much~especially as Emma's brother.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, because I found so much sorrow in the story.
    Any additional comments?
The ending was just perfect.Audiobook provided for an honest review.
The Narrator made the book come alive!
Would you listen to My Life as a Silent Movie again? Why?
Yes. Rosemary's narration brought me to Paris and Moscow. Her ability to make each character their own voice and inflection was amazing. This was the first fiction book I've listened to and if I find other book's that Rosemary narrated it will not be my last.
What did you like best about this story?
Family centric theme and our need to belong.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    The hospital scene.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I cried several times. I was moved by the raw pain that Emma/Vera was experiencing, I've suffered some of the same loses. The hospital scene and how life and death are so closely connected.
    Any additional comments?
Highly recommended this book. The writing came alive with Rosemary's terrific narration. I was cuddled up sick and it was like having a good friend come over and read to me, soothe me, entertain me.
    Rosemary Benson is exceptional Narrator
    Any additional comments?
My Life As A Silent Movie By Jesse Lee Kercheval and Narrated By Rosemary Benson.
Our story begins with Emma, a Liberal Arts Creative Writing Instructor, who receives a knock on her family's front door. A neighbor who has news that will change Emma's life forever.
The Neighbor had seen Emma's car in the intersection, and was informing her that Emma's husband was driving and their daughter was in the back, and that they had been hit by an SUV and both had died at the scene.
Emma's distress was understandable and so consuming that she couldn't even look at the bodies. Emma shut down and checked out sleeping in a sleeping bag down stairs; not able to sleep in her now empty bed.
This sets the theme and emotional condition of the central character of "My Life As A Silent Movie".

Read this along with the book
I purchased Dust by Patricia Cornwell after a friend â who knew I was a big fan of John Grisham â suggested that I give it a try. In one night, I powered through several chapters, and I found myself both drawn in and slightly exhausted. Cornwell has an interesting writing style, where she and her characters bounce around a lot. While reading, I felt like I missing something, but I couldnât quite tell what. It wasnât until I put the book down for the night and replayed what Iâd read in my head that I realized that there was just so much information to take in. I purchased this analysis because I didnât want to accidentally miss any clues. Iâve done this in the past with other books, and the analysisâ always made for a much more enlightened read. This analysis was no exception. After reading a couple of chapters, I would check in with the analysis to review what Iâd read, and there were even a few times I found myself going back to the book because Iâd missed something! I definitely recommend this analysis to anyone whoâd like a better understanding on the novel.
Turned A Dense Novel Into An Easy Read
I've always enjoyed the Kay Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwall. This one-- her 21st in the series--is thus far her best. Its plot is thick with tragedy and injustice and as Scarpetta muddles through it all with her raw emotions in tow, she becomes a character more dynamic than ever. The downside to this novel is that its' so dense and confusing at times. I usually read a Scarpetta novel before bed, and though I like the premise and appreciate Cornwall's stellar writing, I'd like it to be a bit lighter on the brain. This review was my answer. I wish I had a review like it for every Scarpetta novel I've read. Not only did it help me gain new perspectives in terms of the various characters, but it gave me some more background into the story and its author. The fact that it helped me keep all the events and characters of the novel in line as a read was immensely appreciated as well.
