A gathering storm

I have had a very hard time finding the words to review this book. It is so well written with characters that travel in your head even when youre not listening. Traveling with Tom who carries Jack in his head as they get away from their care home to try to find their dad. And, through Toms thoughts, going back to the times before everything went wrong, seeing a warm and close family where the young boys felt safe and loved, but with a shadow already gathering overhead. Throughout the story you have the inescapable dread of how that shadow would spread, of how well intentioned decisions to shield the boys from sad, hard truths actually set disastrous events in motion that could never be taken back.

The narration could have been very tricky, but was handled brilliantly. Shifting constantly between Toms 18 year old voice and Jacks 10 year old voice as they competed to tell the story, and as Jack tried so hard to be heard in spite of Toms efforts to restrain him. Their interactions defined Toms struggle between maintaining old delusions and facing tragic truths. This is not a light story. It has weighed on me over the several days since I finished it. But if I cant say I enjoyed it in the entertaining sense, I can say that I admire its bravery and uniqueness.

Different!

What made the experience of listening to We Used to Be Kings the most enjoyable?

I'm not sure if you could say this book was enjoyable..but it was very good (in my opinion) It was a very sad depiction of a mentally ill boy who had experienced devastating loss in his young life. This story was quite unique. I havent read anything like this before.

Mysterious and lovely

A story removed from time and mysterious in its own way. The writing is lovely---pure Robert Nathan. I like Portrait of Jenny better, for several reasons. One is that with Portrait, the author was younger, and his life view fresher. Stonecliff has some slightly annoying speeches by an older character, and you can usually tell when an author is past her/his prime when they start pontificating from the stage of an elderly character. Another reason that I didn't give the book 5 stars is that none of the characters in this story were particularly engaging human beings. The book is worth reading for the magical qualities and the mystery that remains about life and human character, though.

Bad Effort

This is a really bad effort by a good writer. I didn't care for any of the characters. The skimpy storyline felt merely a device to lecture the reader about things of interest to Nathan and of things that had changed in the world that bothered him. I had no interest in what happened to the people of this story. They weren't developed at all.

Lovely, romantic, nostalgic read

One of Nathan's later works, and actually re-uses several phrases and images from previous books (the plot of the book being written by the author is from one of Nathan's other books)...but it has many of the lovely qualities of his novels.

An incredible author!

I hv loved Robert Nathan for many years. His writing is like poetry and it takes me away to the places he describes. This story is reminiscent of Portrait of Jenny - gentle, tender, spellbinding. It is a love story, of course and the rhythm of it is slow to captures the reader's heart and ensnare you. It requires patience as does love itself. I would recommend this and other books written by Mr. Nathan to those who enjoy poetry, mystery and the magic of the heart.

Compelling story

I could not put this book down. It is interesting and added to my knowledge of WWII. The author brings you to the Alleutian Islands and I felt and experienced every emotion and experience of the people in the story. The descriptions and emotions of his writing style draws the reader in and leaves you personally feeling it all and never wanting to put the book down til it is finished. Even then the story and emotions stay with the reader as though one has actually had a new experience.

Learning experience about Aleutian Islands in WWII

I enjoyed this book mostly because of the history. The writing was good enough to make it suspenseful as to how it would end. The story was slow at times. Overall, parts of it got boring and parts of it were amazing. I recommend it.

Wonderful writing

I would give this book 5 1/2 stars if I could. The writing was superb, and centered on Alaskaâs Aleutian Islands during WW2 - the only battle fought on American soil during that time (and kept quiet). John Easley (a journalist for National Geographic) desperately wants to document the Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands despite the ban on reporters. He accompanies a crew of American soldiers on a flying mission, the plane gets shot down by the Japanese-held island of Attu, and there he is stranded in the worst possible conditions. Meanwhile, Johnâs wife, Helen desperately wants to find her missing husband, who has not communicated since his hasty departure. She joins a USO troupe (as an entertainer) traveling to Alaska in hopes of finding him. Parts of this book reminded me of the movie âCastawayâ â John lives in a cave; endures a tooth extraction; and keeps a picture of a young native girl to distract and give him hope. The descriptions of the terrain and weather conditions are vivid.

Excellent Story

Interesting story about an important part of WW II I have not heard about. The Aleutian islands and the battles fought there and the role of the USO.

Worth every minute

This is an episode from Wall that I knew nothing about and was fascinated by the survival story and the history.

Really good read from start to finish.

I'm going to buy the book and read this one myself. The narrator doesn't pause during her read. It's like a huge run on sentence.

Battling the Darkness

I was mesmerized by the story of sweet little Victoria, the baby born to black parents . . . a baby who looked more white than black . . . and was rejected by her parents . . . sent to be raised by two childless aunts. Victoria was raised to love Jesus and it was several years before she would face the wrath of her parents and the evil in their household . . . and even more years until she learned the history of how it began. Very helpful

Gone Girl was recommended to me by my coworker, but when I looked it up, honestly I felt like it had a lot going on. Bad marriage, a forced move, parents who stole a trust fund, and throw in a dying mother in law- it just seemed like too much. My coworker assured me I would like, but I wasnât sure.

I decided to purchase this review because I know they do an excellent job highlighting the good and bad of the books they review. The review highlighted the book as being good for thriller fans who enjoy a more intellectual approach to psychopathic killers, which I found particularly interesting, as I didnât get that feel at all from other website reviews. That is what sets Expert Book Reviews apart. They can perfectly identify who would like a book, even when the reader themselves are in doubt. Contrary to my suspicions, the part of the book that was most highlighted as âbadâ was mostly about the format. Expert Book Reviews says a large portion of the book is set up, however that is true in many of the books I typically read, so that doesnât bother me. This review squashed my fears of the plot line being too busy, and to the joy of my coworker, convinced me to purchase Gone Girl.

Awesome book

I didn't realize it was YA which explained the lack of sex. However, The Holocaust is a subject near to my heart as many close friends and family members lost their families to it.

I love being able to read the other side of the story because it reminds me that it was a sick man and sick people who followed Hitler and that regular folks were stuck there without much they could do. I know of people who also had family member survive due to the help of righteous people who risked their lives to do the right thing.

I need to be reminded that any kind of mass hate it as damaging to the person who feels it, as the target of it.
