In this latest novel from acclaimed author Cindy Myers, big changes are afoot in the warm-hearted small town of Eureka, Colorado....
With local Maggie Stevens' baby on the way - not to mention her wedding to Jameso Clark in the works - spring in Eureka promises to be a time of rebirth in more ways than one. To add to the excitement, and refill the town's depleted coffers, Lucille, the mayor, has wooed a movie producer to Eureka, throwing folks into a tizzy - and inspiring some to reach for the stars. As if that weren't enough, the bogus Lucky Lady mine the town partially sold turns out to really have gold in it - and possibly a ghost to boot. But with each silver lining, there seems to be a cloud....
With Eureka's financial future at stake, Lucille will have to wrangle Lucky Lady's greedy half-owner to regain control. Meanwhile, just as Jameso is getting comfortable with the imminent role of husband and father, his wayward sister, Sharon, comes to Eureka to escape a troubled marriage. Can the residents of Eureka find the courage to stand up to ghosts of all kinds and get their beloved town back on its feet in time to welcome their newest addition - and celebrate the gifts of spring...?

Very disappointing and unrealistic ending
I love Shreve's writing but wow. . . I could not believe that Margaret--a strong, intelligent, independent woman--stayed with the condescending, sexist and completely unsupportive cad of a husband. She chose playing tennis and climbing up a mountain over true love with Rafiq? It didn't make sense. It didn't ring true. The character that Shreve created in Margaret would have LEFT such a husband and followed Rafiq to London.
fun, and inspiring
This is Cindy Myers' third book in a series that takes place in the small village of Eureka in the remote Rocky Mountains. As in the first two books, "The Mountain Between Us" and "The View from Here," the author weaves a continuing saga that is fascinating, fun, and inspiring. The life stories of transplanted Texan and unlucky in love Maggie, her suitor Jameso, Eureka's mayor Lucille, contrarian librarian Cassie, curmudgeon Bob, and a dozen other quirky characters will have you laughing out loud and wiping away tears. Young love, old love, and once bitten, twice shy love, "A Change in Altitude" has what it takes to warm the heart and leave you with a smile. Note to author: May the series continue!
Less absorbing than the usual Anita Shreve
I usually find myself absorbed in the world of Anita Shreve's characters. This one I felt this sense of distance most of the way through, not sure why, it just felt like the character was kind of an observer herself. Maybe the setting too of an African country felt less familiar than her other work. I did feel for the main character who was treated most unfairly in my view. The setting of the novel was a good insight into the political and human rights environment in a unsettling period of change. And also the casual racism. Ending was inconclusive although her endings often are.
Readable
I enjoyed this book for the descriptions of African scenery and life.
I was very disappointed with the characters. The only character we got to know was Margaret. It's not clear to me how she and Patrick managed to get married because there doesn't seem to be much love between them.
