So interesting and great performance!

What a well written book for young people! I am an adult and enjoyed it immensely even though I think it would be best for 5th - 9th graders. Especially those interested in science or engineering, but really anyone who just wants to know about history.

I knew very little about the subject of the Manhattan Project and I would not be interested in an entire adult book on this subject, so this was perfect. The author keeps the suspense going as if it is a spy novel, which is basically is, except it is all true!

After finishing this I went right to the Internet and looked up all these people and places for more information. The actual book gives great timelines and further resources and photos, but the audio is great just for the absorbing story.

Clear and Concise History of the First Bomb

Please note that this book has received awards for its excellence for young adults. I was hesitant at first because I was looking for an adult book covering the science and history on the making of the first nuclear bomb and about Robert Oppenheimer, the father of that first bomb. This book is not in any way childish. It gives a clear and concise history of all the events. I am completely satisfied with the book. It is an excellent place to start. Having read this you want more details, more in-depth information about the main characters. I prefer starting with a background of the entire event before plunging into a book focused on Oppenheimer himself. Now I want to know more about this man. He is fascinating; first he makes the bomb and he is at the same time one of first to be aware of its dangers! I have already begun American Prometheus by Kai Bird, a biography focused just on Oppenheimer.

I gave this book three stars because I like it. It reads like a good Wiki article. It has all the prominent facts. This happened and this happened and then this. One event after another. You get a picture of the path toward the making of the bomb, its actual construction and the political environment of those times WW2, the race for the scientific knowledge and McCarthyism. It is amazing how differently the people spying for the Soviets were punished.and why each thought the Soviets should have this knowledge.

Having read this book, I now can easily go further. There is little character analysis in this book, and that is what I am looking for in my next book on this topic. You certainly cannot start your education in the tenth grade..now I have prepared myself.

Concerning the audiobook narration by Roy Samuelson, it was excellent.

Father And Daughter Agree!

My oldest started reading this as part of her summer reading list heading into her 5th grade year. I agreed to read along with her. Now in full disclosure she was reading the hardcopy. But being able to discuss this together over dinner and other times during the week was AWESOME. The story is well done and full of empowering messages I know she will hold onto. Just to be clear.....this dad enjoyed the story as much as she did.

Finished in One Night.

This story was entertaining, but be forewarned in between each chapter is weird singing. The narrators have nice voices but the music is horrible. For me, it didn't hurt the book. I still enjoyed the story and the singing is very short lived (thank God). The singing & intermittent music is the only reason I took one star away from this book.

As my headline says, I literally finished this book in one night. I got attached to the story and intrigued by the little princesses. They are definitely underdogs. Although I had though the main characters reasons for feeling outcast and what they can do with rock speaking could have been taken so many other places, the author found intriguing ways of moving the story forward in a somewhat predictable but very likable manner.

If you like this book you will like the Selection series even more. Similar idea but more depth. Another good, similar series is the Countess.

Don't Let the Title Throw You Off

When my daughter was young and still into all things "princess", she had this title on her shelf. We never read it at the time and I think it was probably because I was so burnt out on princess stories. Many years later, this book showed up on one of the girl empowerment feeds I read so I decided to give it a go and I am so glad I did!

The story is one of family love, tradition, the power of education, friendship, and making life affirming changes within that framework. I truly enjoyed the story and loved the full cast performances.

You will read lots of reviews slamming the music between chapters. It was odd at first but very quickly became part of the story.

I have now read the second book and am getting ready to read the third. So far, the series has moved along and kept my attention even though at at 51 I am not the target audience.

IT BROKE THE HEART OF EVERY HEARTED PERSON

With all the mysteries of book one solved in book one, Lisa McMann had no where to go with this book, so it turned into a long boring conversation book. I listened for almost four hours, but could not stay awake for any more. Instead of a continuation of book one, I think a prequel would have been more interesting.

Excellent Story!

I really liked the story, but I would have liked it better if the narrator from the Unwanteds: Book one was narrating this book as well. This narrator was not quite as good as the last one. Overall it was very good.

I have read the last two books with the audiobook. Helps a lot. The narrator has been amazing, the way words are said really makes the characters come alive!

Bad "big picture" plot structure. Bad-guy plan succeeds through sheer luck, rather than any intelligence on their part. Makes for lower stakes for protagonist. Good reader, though not quite as good as the reader for book 1.

Norway WWII small community rebels against invader

What made the experience of listening to Snow Treasure the most enjoyable?

I felt as though I could see what was going on in this small community, with the fear and anxiety of being overrun by the Germans. Between the author and the expressive voice of the reader, we found ourselves in Norway.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Snow Treasure?

The children having to sneak past the German troops with their sleds.

Which scene was your favorite?

Sledding when they were bringing the gold.

Love this book

Love this book. Had it when I was a child it was my favorite book then and still is. I was so happy to find this here as I want to share it with my Grandchildren and my book pages are so old yellow and brittle I won't let anyone touch it.

Alcatraz Really Hate Those Librarians!!!

Fantastic 4th addition to this series.... I love the new characters that are added here, and i love how damn annoying Alcatraz could be.... He could be really annoying sometimes, when you start the book, don't worry regarding the chapters' numbers.. I had to go back to make sure i didn't skip a chapter by mistake, don't do that... just go ahead!!!

Alcatraz is put in a new place with huge responsibilities, which was a great change, and gets to discover some truths regarding his family.... some are really funny!!!

Great books. And not just for kids either

wonderfully unconventional magic/technology/questionable history story. Brandon Sanderson always does a great job. Always great stories with unique twist in plots and magic that is not something dumb or over used like many fantasy based stuff like witches, goblins, or Disney like princesses and stuff. He writes good stuff. Now go read all his books.

fun humorous boisterous story. I have read all of Sanderson's other books and stories. I left this series out because it was written for the younger audience. to my delight this series is as much fun as anything else I have read from Sanderson. wittybanter with a lively world of magic and technology. fascinating! the reader is highly skilled and helps to make the world and the humor believable.

Well worth the wait!!!

We're so glad to finally get the history on Mister Benedict! We missed Reny, Sticky, Kate & Constance, but you'll find out why Mister Benedict connected to them so much in the first three books. This is a great story and it stands alone - you don't have to read the earlier books to enjoy this one. The story features some great new characters. We can't wait for the next MBS story - whether it features the young Nicholas Benedict or Reny, Sticky, Kate & Constance!

Awesome prequel

This was a wonderful story and performance. We were left wondering a few things we thought would be resolved in this prequel!

Refreshing contemporary fiction with heartwarming narration

This book, which is the prequel to the Mysterious Benedict Society, was the first in the series we listened to a few years ago. It captivated us from the beginning with the well written character descriptions from the mind of an extraordinary orphan boy in "ordinary" orphan circumstances. The plot has a great many features: secrets and mystery, struggle and suspense, deep friendship and ultimately a wonderful and unexpected ending that leaves every reader wanting to make the world a better place right where they are. This is the theme that continues throughout the series, and we've recently purchased the boxed set of paperbacks after having listened to each story 2-3 times on audible. These books are indeed one of the greatest series of our time and should be sought out and valued as the great treasure that they are!

The narration by Del Roy is perfectly suited to the character of Nicholas Benedict throughout the series and enriches the experience even more. My 9 yr old daughter says she loves that as she reads the books in print, she hears Del Roy's voice in her head, as do I: the gentle, intelligent, animated and constant voice of the extraordinary, mysterious Nicholas Benedict.

excellent wrap up

Loved it. It was very sad in parts but had a great message about telling the truth. He also overcame bullying through his own ingenuity. A very touching and compelling story.

What did you love best about Chomp?

I loved the relationship between Wahoo and his family. Makes the whole book seem even better.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were smart funny and likable. I was in the everglades in florida when i listened to this. I even tried to figure out if there was a stuffed alligator at the air boat tour I took my children on.

What does James Van Der Beek bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He is a great reader. He does a good job of making all of the characters come to life.

I wish the author would write more about this family. Bring back Tuna.

What would have made Chomp better?

The narrator was reading so quickly I couldn't understand one out of every 10 words he said. I love Carl Hiaasen but I tried to listen to this book for 1 hour, 30 min each time and had to turn it off. I am very disappointed and would never purchase another book read by this narrator.

a great engaging story

My husband and three boys listened to this story in one hit on a long car journey. I was amazed at how it captivated the boys and drew them away from their own electronic devices. It is a very contemporary story, very relevant, funny, informative and entertaining. We all loved the reader. Made the trip very easy

Never let Van Der Beek narrate...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I love Carl Hiaasen and wait for each book to come out. Unless I buy the book to read I might not make it through this one.

Fantastic Story, Great Narrator!

I will admit that I bought this mainly because Jim Dale was narrating and I'd enjoyed him so much with the Harry Potter books. This story, though, is beautifully written and well-plotted. The characters are well-developed in the best way: you're shown who they are via their actions rather than told. The mythology of this "other London" is realistic in the manner of the best fantasy books. This is a great tale for all ages. (And Jim Dale, as usual, does a bang up job with the voices -- he had me laughing aloud at The Dictionary.)

Would you listen to Stoneheart again? Why?

I will definitely be listening to this again because it's a truly unique twist on what we perceive to be reality, and it exists right under our noses.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Stoneheart?

I don't want to give too much of a spoiler, but I liked Edie's glinting - which you'll just have to listen to the book to understand what I mean. I can't really tell you why either without the risk of ruining an important piece of the plot for you.

What does Jim Dale bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He's Jim Dale! If you've heard him read the Harry Potter books, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Every character gets their own voice and personality that the listener can identify and recognize even before he reads who's speaking. When Jim Dale reads a book, the words become the characters with real depth and life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I had had the ability to, I would have.

Unlike the HP series which ages with its characters, the Stoneheart series remains at its original age level and, while I enjoyed it as a full-grown adult, is appropriate for children as young as 10 without the need for parental concern. Of course you'll want to listen to it with them anyway because, let's face it, why should they have all the fun?

There are a couple of foul words used in the story, but they're minor ones and I don't feel that there is a risk of young children wanting to pick them up.

L.O.V.E. the story + Jim Dale

Jim Dale has got to be the best narrator in the history of narrators. He is so magnificent I could literally listen to him read a phone book (do they even make those anymore?) and find it riveting. When you add in the fact that he is, in fact reading a rather exciting and charming story that is unique and engaging, it makes for such a brilliant combination and a book I wanted to keep listening to.
