    Title: Two Weeks' Notice
Subtitle: A Revivalist Novel, Book 2
    Author: Rachel Caine
    Narrator: Julia Whelan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-20-13

    Publisher's Summary:
After dying and being revived with the experimental drug Returne, Bryn Davis is theoretically free to live her unlife - with regular doses to keep her going. But Bryn knows that the government has every intention of keeping a tight lid on Pharmadene's life-altering discovery, no matter the cost. Thankfully, some things have changed for the better; her job at the rechristened Davis Funeral Home is keeping her busy and her fragile romance with Patrick McCallister is blossoming - thanks in part to their combined efforts in forming a support group for Returne addicts. But when some of the group members suddenly disappear, Bryn wonders if the government is methodically removing a threat to their security, or if some unknown enemy has decided to run the zombies into the ground.

    Great Middle Book!
Read from October 29 to November 02, 2013
    Listened/Read for Fun (Audible/Paperback)
    Tracking Books Read Review (Short)
    Overall Rating: 4.25
    Story Rating: 4.00
    Character Rating: 4.50
Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)
First Thought when Finished: OH MY Two Week's Notice was such a good listen! I am so glad I had Terminated ready to go when I finished.
Overall Thoughts: I have pretty much devoured this series back to back. Two Weeks Notice did exactly what the middle book in a trilogy should do: advance the story. We got more action, romance, back story, and emotion. Middle books should always be the "meat" of the trilogy and this one delivered. Bryn (the leading lady) is probably one of my favorite characters in Urban Fantasy. She is kick ass but mostly she is just dealing with the hand that she has been dealt. I tend to admire the leading ladies that are "human" about their circumstances. The rest of the cast of characters are great too. My favorite thing about Rachel Caine is she writes characters that I care about and want to root for! The Revivalist series though is probably my favorite!
    Audio Thoughts:
Narrated By Julia Whelan /Length: 9 hrs and 52 mins
Julia does a fantastic job with Bryn and the rest of the characters in this series. Her pacing and rhythm are very well done. She also has one of those voices that you can listen to on higher speeds and it doesn't distort at all. Overall very well done.
Final Thoughts: I love this series!
Oh Snap! Bryn 2.0 is going to be very interesting.
    Issue(s) I Had:
I dont understand why the revived people are being called Returne addicts. Addicts are people who can (if they choose to) stop doing something like drinking or drugs. But the revived NEED the Returne drug or they die. Its like calling me an oxygen addict. I dont get it.
    The Story:
Bryn is now working for the government in order to get her doses of Returne to stay fresh. But little does the government know, she has her own private supplier. The crazy ex-FBI mad scientist, Manny is trying to tweak Returne so that Bryn and the revived do not have to get their supply from the government.
While Bryn works her first assignment for the government she is trying to find her sister, Annie that was also killed and revived in Working Stiff. But Bryn is not alone; Joe is still working for Bryn at the funeral home and doubling as her back/bodyguard.

    On my must buy list!
    Read/Listened for Fun (Kindle/Audible)
    Overall Rating: 4.50
    Story Rating: 4.25
    Character Rating: 4.75
Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)
NOTE: I did originally get this from Edelweiss but did not download it in time for review. I purchased my own copies through Amazon/Audible.
First Thought when Finished: Dead Man's Deal by Jocelynn Drake was excellent! This series is now on my must buy as released list!
Story Thoughts: Oh Gage! You are the king of getting yourself tangled up in the most impossible situations. Granted you always do it because you want to protect those you love BUT man this time you got yourself tangled up in all sorts of madness. Dead Man's Deal is all about what would you do for the people you love! The fact is, Gage will do anything for them. There was tons of action, suspense, and moments of "oh crap". This series is shaping up to be one of my favorites!
Character Thoughts: I love the characters of The Asylum Tales. Gabe, Bronx (wasn't enough of him), Trixie, Sofie, and Gideon. They are where Jocelynn Drake SHINES! You care about them! You root for them! You cry and scream at them! Overall you just want to become part of their world and hang out with them. I really do love them all! In Dead Man's Deal though it was Sofie who made my heart grow 10x!
    Audio Thoughts:
Narrated by: Michael Urie /Length: 11 hrs and 50 mins
I love Michael Urie's narration of Dead Man's Deal (with the exception of his voice for Trixie). He is spot on with Gage, Bronx, Sofie, and Gideon. His pacing is fantastic and the emotion is perfectly suited to the story. Trixie, the voice for her is just a little to over the top for my taste.
Final Thoughts: I need the next one NOW!
Another Great Story in the Series
    First Thought:
    Still loving this world!
    The Set Up:
Gage was outted to his friends as a warlock in Angels Ink and now not only is Gage in danger of the White Tower but so is his friends and family.
Reaver, the dark fae mobster in Low Town is blackmailing Gage with the threat of doing harm to Bronx so that he has to work for him. So not only does Gage have to worry about the witches and warlocks he has the glorified thug on his back too.
Then theres Trixies pass that comes to town and the Elves of the Summer Court is threatening to take Trixie back home so she can be the Kings baby maker.
Gage is doing is best to run his tattoo shop, The Asylum, keep himself alive and protecting his loved ones. All while trying to solve the Elves of the Summer Courts baby making problem. Its just another Tuesday, what could go wrong?
Gage really steps up his game in the magic using way. He already owes one year of his life because he killed someone with magic in the last book. How many years can he rack up?
    Issue(s) I had:
NONE! Im loving this world and these characters.
    The Narration:
It took me a little while to get into Uries narration of the first book, Angels Ink. But now I cant see anyone else doing the narration.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
This book won a World Fantasy Award. It's remarkable: The stories are rich, fascinating stuff - creepy and unsettling and phantasmic. Imagine what Tolkien's Lord of the Rings would have been like if Tolkien had tried to tell that story sympathetically from the point of view of the human denizens of Mordor and you'll have the slightest sense of what you're about to wade into... but only just a sense.
These stories will make the same demands on you that they made on Brian: They will command and compel you, and fill you full of terrible wonder. And when you've finished them, you'll find yourself wanting more.
    Members Reviews:
    Awesome content, annoying release.
Great stories told with mastery. The only complaint I have is with the release itself. The chapters vary between 2 to 20 mins in length with no indication where one story begins and another ends, which, in a collection of stort stories, is a major annoyence.
I still strongly recommend this book to anyone with a fondness for wierd horror or dark fantasy.
    A Gateway Book...
I had never heard of this title or author. I am an avid reader of science fiction and have dabbled in fantasy, but I have rarely read a horror book when not assigned to do so. I would describe this as horror fantasy, somewhere between George R. R. Martin and H. P. Lovecraft.
I bought this title to listen to during my flights over Thanksgiving, after the recommendation from the "Stuff to Blow Your Mind" podcast. Once I started it, I had to finish it. It was addictive. In fact, I have enjoyed this collection of tales so much, that I plan to further explore horror fiction.
I had a visceral reaction to this book!
What did you love best about The Throne of Bones?
This book is so well writen and so well preformed, I had to put it down from time to time, because it started to effect me. This book is unabashed horror theater. I felt threatened by the outstanding narration, the menace in the narrators voice and the plot of all the short storys made me feel uneasy and frankly disgusted at times. I don't think ive had as much of a visceral reaction to a book or a preformance than i did to this one.
What other book might you compare The Throne of Bones to and why?
The short story "The King in Yellow", "Our Lady of the Flowers" " The Story of the Eye" "Crash" The movies "Irreversable" and "The Road".
Which character as performed by Wayne June was your favorite?
I forget the name, but the story of the nobel and his wife who wants to become a ghoul, and how that happens, is an insight to horror fiction and mental illness.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    You can't unseen this Movie!
    Any additional comments?
I thought about this book and writer, he is so talented and at times makes the horror so realistic and simple that it might put you off; and maybe thats why he might not be as well know and well read as he should be. This book and mostly the narration actualy made me feel unsafe and replused, at times, if i dwelled on it too much. This review maybe over the top, the writing is well crafted.
Great Horror Fiction -- Lovecraft with more tits
A great read for people that enjoy love craft and related authors. This book is original though and does not rip off or imitate other works. Only thing that sucked was googling author and finding out he is dead.

    Get them all!
Audible needs to get evety book written that has anything to do with the Vadamar Series. Including the Black Griffin books. The stories are good enough to buy no matter who reads tjem.
    A great story
Where does Storm Rising rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Middling . . . the story is great, but the reading could use some work
What other book might you compare Storm Rising to and why?
Anything else by M. Lackey. It's very much in her style with many interesting characters but common threads bringing them all together.
What three words best describe David Ledouxs voice?
    Annoying, monotone, steady.
    How to ruin Mercedes Lackey
I didn't think it could be done, but here we are. Of all the people they could have had read stories by this author, WHY did it have to be this person? I have read Mercedes Lackey for most of my life and I'm a tried and true fan of her work. Having this man read has ruined the book. It is a truly terrible narration. Don't waist your time, your money, or your credits...
    Terrible narration
Another good story by Lackey, but the kindle version is completely riddled with typos. Very annoying. The audible performance is terrible: the reading is painfully paced, with very long pauses between words or phrases which are alternately vocally drawn out or read quickly. On top of that, the narrator uses excessively dramatic intonation, making the story feel whiney and angsty.
    Calm down, please!
The guy who is reading this story sounds like he's on some sort of and feta mean all the time. I can never tell when the action in the story is building because the way the guy talks every. single. thing. he. does. is. exciting. It's as if this guy doesn't know how to modulate his voice at all. I like the story, but I really don't like the reader.

A fascinating look at Fae and humans
Sam was just seeking a sufficiently private place to relieve himself after getting excessively drunk after work because his wife was working late again. Instead, he witnesses a body being carried out of the Museum, and becomes entirely too interesting to some of the Fae-touched who want to keep him quiet.
Cathy was just trying to remain out of sight of the Fae and her Fae-touched family so she can continue her university studies in Mundanus. Instead she's trapped and brought home by her brother Tom, and informed that she's now betrothed to William.
William has his own ideas, including a preference for Cathy's sister Elizabeth initially, and then for new arrival in Aquae Sulis, Amerlia.
And with the Fae having little interest in humans except to show off their own power, and the Great Families among the Fae-touched (including Cathy's and William's) being mostly almost as sociopathic as the Fae, surely nothing can go wrong, right?
The story unfolds slowly, in intriguing layers. What seems simple at first is revealed as tangled and complicated. Newman's language and style match the story beautifully, and the Split Worlds, Mundanus, Exilium, and the Nether, the land in between where the Fae-touched live, is an interesting take on the relations between Fae and humans.
    Recommended.
    I bought this book.
Great story, great narration... Oh, great, now I've got to buy the other two books
By turns the lead character needs a hug and a good spanking. Except she's an adult and should be all grown up by now. But her crappy upbringing didn't teach her how to be one. Yet she soldiers on, quite bravely in fact. Her fiancé deserves a medal. And a spanking of his own. He's going to get the girl. He's even going to deserve the girl. But is he going to appreciate her? And is she ever going to realize that she's got her nose just as far cocked in the air as the rest of the people in her world?
With all of that going on, where did Emma find the space to have so much action and adventure going on? And such interesting and quirky and familiar characters? And how did she make it seem so easily accessible no matter how weird it got? So many authors would have lost me 10 chapters back, but not Emma. A soul, trapped in a walking gargoyle statue because the soul jar was destroyed? Makes total sense. At least as Emma presents it.
Look, why are you still reading this review? Click ""Buy" and start listening to Emma Newman read you her story. And don't worry about it being "read by the author." If there's one thing Emma does better than write, it's narrate audiobooks.
I hate writing Bad reviews but.....
This could be a great story but the narration is not very good.

    Members Reviews:
Over react much? Narration is not that bad.
    Any additional comments?
After all, books are for entertainment and this is a Fantasy Paranormal.
Abby Craden is not the best, but did not desire the 4 chapter rant that Sheri gave!

    Absolutely Awesome Great Story
I wasn't sure starting out reading this storyline but I was surprised that it was extremely enjoyable and glad I didn't listen to any negative reviews both on this book of the series or before because I am so happy I stuck with this series and. narrator!!! Wish their were more books similar to this one !
    Narration Also killed the book
Normally I save my thoughts about the narration of the audiobook to the end of the review. But since I almost gave Flesh and Blood a 3 star rating based on the narration I going to talk about it first.
Abby Craden's narration of the main characters was pretty good and her "reading" voice (non dialogue narration) was good. Where I had a problem with the narration was her choices for A LOT of the secondary characters more to the point the minority characters. For example Katsumi is an Asian vampire and Craden's narration of her sounded like siamese cats from Lady and the Tramp. I had that song "We are Siamese if You Please" stuck in my head whenever Katsumi can on scene.
Another character I had problem with was Doc. I read the first book, Blood Rights and I didn't either remember or picked up on the fact that he is Africain American but listing to Carden's voice for him I thought, is Doc black? So I asked my two read along co-hosts that recently read Blood Rights and they were not sure either. I looked him up on the House of Comarre website and saw a picture of the character. Yep, he's Africain American. But I didn't enjoy the stereo-type voice that the narrator gave him; she made him sound like a street thug mixed with a white raper (Vanilla Ice). I thought he would say Yo-Yo at any moment.
I was so focused on how much I disliked the narration of the minority characters that it took me out of the story many times. But I thought it was unfair to lower my rating of the writing that Kristen Painter brought to life. It's just a case where I will read the rest of the series instead of listening.

    Critic Reviews:
Max Gladstone has created a fascinating universe and equally fascinating characters. Its a world in which magic is craft and religion has some very practical rules, and he shows it through the stories of some very interesting characters. This is his first novel. I cant wait for his second. (Jerry Pournelle,
    New York Timesbest-sellingauthor)
This has so many of my favorite things: an intriguing world, fun characters, a puzzle of a story that manages to be both funky fantasy and legal thriller.
Three Parts Deadis simultaneously fast paced and thoughtful, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. (Carrie Vaughn,
    New York Timesbest-selling author)
The story remains suspenseful and fast-paced throughout, and the diverse, female-led cast is a joy to follow through the fascinating and unusual landscape. (

Great story, but the narrator was off
I really liked this book. The story was significantly above average in quality, but not perfect. I will be reading the following books in this series in the months to come despite the imperfections. I could consistently see humor and good story telling in the story, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My one suggestion to the author would be to add more humor in the future, so we had something funny or a joke every two or three pages instead of every ten or twenty.
My main issue was the narrator. She just didn't click with me. I liked 9/10ths of the voices she used, but disliked the voice she used for Tara. She made one of the main characters sound as if she had a lisp, or something. It was super minor, but it bugged me.
    Cool story, awful horrible narration
Unlistenable narrator. Story seems really cool though. Would have to recommend staying away from the audiobook version of this.
Claudia Alick reminds me of a muddle aged librarian reading to children, and in general was robbing any kind of interest or depth from what otherwise seemed an enthralling story.
A narrator can make or break a book for me.
I wanted to like the book but this narrator just wasn't for me. I thought she asked a question, and so I replayed that part and it was not a question. I couldn't get into this book at all.

Great continuation of the Thursday Next series
I wish I could rate this at 4.5 stars. It falls a bit short of 5 stars, but deserves better than a 4 star rating.
A must read for anyone following the series. But if you're following the series, you know you'll read this book eventually.
While the book before this (One Of Our Thursdays Is Missing) occurs almost completely in the book world, this one occurs almost completely in the real Thursday's world. The story was interesting throughout, and narration was perfect. I don't usually listen to an audiobook again immediately after finishing it, but this one was interesting enough that I did so, and managed to pick up some nuances I missed the first time around.
I would not recommend this book to anyone who hasn't read the Thursday Next series before, however. I started with one of the books in the middle and it took a while figuring out what was going on. Start with the first book for maximum enjoyment.
    Jasper Fforde is back! Awesome!
What did you love best about The Woman Who Died a Lot?
I've read all of the Thursday Next series, and I thought the last 2 or 3 books not as good as the first few, but with this edition I thought Jasper Fforde got his stride back. This story definitely had that extra spark that the last few books were lacking. The writing was spot-on and hilarious. This series is one where I frequently find myself laughing out loud, which is really embarrassing sometimes when I'm sitting in my cubicle at work and people start looking at me weird.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the new story with the Library Service and Fforde's explanation of that branch of the military(?). This whole alternate reality that Fforde has created with Thursday Next is continually expanding and this was particularily humorous in this book.
What about Emily Grays performance did you like?
Emily Gray does a very good job shifting through all the characters. She definitely is a great narrator with perfect comedic timing.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Well, these stories bring more laughs than tears most of the time, but the bit about Jenny at the end was kind of saddening, but hopeful. I don't want to give to much away there.
    Any additional comments?
Definitely worth a listen for any Thursday Next fan! You'll be really happy you did. I'm already gearing up for the next edition.
    Excellent Series Addition
The Thursday Next series continues, as mind-boggling, entertaining and thought-provoking as always. Emily Gray's reading again makes the most outlandish situations seems perfectly reasonable. The humor is both timely and timeless. I loved reading the book and love the audio edition too; I have already listened to it a second time.

To young Tan-Tan, the Robber Queen is simply a favorite costume to wear at the festival - until her power-corrupted father commits an unforgiveable crime.
Suddenly, both father and daughter are thrust into the brutal world of New Half-Way Tree. Here monstrous creatures from folklore are real, and the humans are violent outcasts in the wilds. Tan-Tan must reach into the heart of myth and become the Robber Queen herself. For only the Robber Queen's legendary powers can save her life...and set her free.
    Critic Reviews:
"Robin Miles's voice is deep, rich, and rolling. The story is written in a kind of patois, and her narration makes it easy to understandprobably easier than reading it in print. She effortlessly creates unique characterswhether male, female, young, old, sentient birds, ghosts, or aliens." (AudioFile)

Even Through the Dimensions, Girls Are Not Safe
Robin Miles narrates Midnight Robber with a strong patois that was initially a turnoff for me. It was like listening to narration in a foreign language. The story itself is an unusual mix of old and sci-fi, there are 'aware' buildings with artificial intelligence the characters interact with and devices like toilets that measure one's physical health. There are also 'duels' with machetes and a lot of rank poverty. It reminds me of Firefly, with its combination of space ships and people riding horses. I believe the narrator's patois is of Haitian derivation, lots of 'oui's' and I definitely learned to love it. I found it musical and mesmerizing when all was said and done, DoDo. I listened to the novel at least three times and found things I missed in each subsequent listening. I grew to love Tan Tan, the main character in the novel. We meet Tan Tan when she is about 7, and lord, does this child have trials and tribulations to endure! In the end endure she does. I felt the story was also a reflection of the treatment of native, indigenous peoples. I find Nalo Hopkinson an engaging artist, introducing characters of locales of interest. I found the primary story line sad, however. Even into the future, across dimensions, girls are not safe. Despite that, I gave the novel top ratings across the board. I will read Nalo Hopkinson again. I actually think there is a good possibility of a sequel to Midnight Robber. I want to know what happened to Iony, Melon Head, Chichibaud, Tifa and other characters it would be a spoiler to mention here. I recommend the book, it is very good and I'll probably listen to it a fourth time. That's one of the things I love about audio books, you can always invest in another reading!
A fabulous narration bolsters a pretty good story
You will probably either love or hate the narration style. But if you aren't immediately comfortable with it, I urge you to relax, be patient, and let it flow for a while. Robin Miles is a capable and versatile narrator, and this is some of her best work.
