Aida - Diplomat by other means

We now find Aida as a major and her transformation continues to make her more emotionally human with this book having her involved in a, minimally, physical relationship. Due to the total annihilation of both the SOLCOM and Alliance fleets for reasons unknown, both sides agree to meet to discuss a peace treaty and Major Aida has been given the unwanted assignment of acting as the SOCOM ambassador's personal bodyguard. While both sides had ulterior motives (mostly intel gathering), neither wanted any conflict that might start another war. Unbeknownst to either side, a third party had other plans and early on, things went sideways.

ah, Aida was now in her element!

Both the writing and narration are still quite good.

The end was left wide open for another book

Is there any word of another? I really enjoyed the first four in the series, but as the pages wound down I was afraid the plot and storyline wouldn't be wrapped up, and unfortunately they weren't. I am a fan of Mr Currie and am awaiting the June release of Warrior King to continue that series. I hope there is another book in this series as it really needs at least one more.

Aida is expanding her resume of skills

By Other Means is Evan Currie's 5th installment of the Silver Wings series. As the aliens have elected to open talks with the humans, the story opens with negotiations in progress. Humanity has learned of at least 119 alien species in the Alliance with specialization as a major theme. Aida, now a captain, is assigned to the diplomatic protective detail, but her main role is to gather intelligence about the various players and their particular region of the galaxy that could prove useful should talks break down. While Aida gets to display her operator skills, she also branches out into traditional spook activities. She has also gained a well deserved reputation as a jinx for any spaceship she is aboard. Humans continue to surprise with their jack-of-all-trades adaptability.

The sci-fi elements are in line with previous installments, although the Ross ability to manipulate space and gravity is further explored. At the same time, Aida's experimental implants are deemed a failure, but they begin to imbue her with wild abilities that almost defy logic.

Buckets of blood, battles with horrible monsters. It's all there. Not for the faint hearted but I thoroughly enjoyed The Red Knight. I will be keeping an eye on Miles Cameron for more. I also have a new favourite narrator in Matthew Wolf. Recommended for fantasy lovers.

Sigh... I already bought this on audible. But they changed the cover and didn't tell me I owned different version... please give me my credit back. :/

Epic!

What made the experience of listening to The Red Knight the most enjoyable?

It's the marriage between authentic detail, subtle humour and a range of different and carefully wrought story-lines that makes this one of the best books I've listen to in a while. It's a rather novel take on the fantasy genre, too. It's a fantasy/historic novel cross-over and not the worse for it.

What did you like best about this story?

It's really engaging and the characterisation avoids stereotypes. There are heroes dressed as anti-heroes and vice-versa. There are as many powerful women as men, which always gets my vote. Equally, there are vain and shallow women but just as many men sharing the same unflattering characteristics. There are a range of interesting themes such as the class-system, dysfunctional relationships and the rights and wrongs of other cultural, moral and social constructs. The story-lines are carefully constructed and despite the length of this book, they never seem laboured.

What about Matthew Wolfs performance did you like?

Wolf's performance is another highlight. He has to cope with a massive range of characters and the variety of accents he manages are believable and generally well maintained. Yes, there are a few accent inconsistencies but there are so MANY characters this minor criticism hardly seems worth mentioning.

These books are addictive

Listening to these books is like carrying a tv mini series in my pocket. He really writes great bad guys and awful situations and since it's scifi they are a fun listen.

Not A Bad Book

Finally we find out the reaction of the people on Earth One to the existence of the other Earth. It's just what you might expect from our paranoid country to which 9/11 has happened. Rampant paranoia and the determination to 'get' those alien animals, who probably aren't even human beings. Sadly the book is far too short and imho should have been made into parts of books 2 and 4 with some strong editing.

Good Installment

This is a really good installment for the series. I really enjoy the narration - I think the narration makes the story better than it actually is . Really wish we could break down the ratings more, because the story is more like a 3.5. The author borrows heavily from the rest of the genre. Having said that, I really do enjoy the main character - his humor, quips, and general cranky attitude. The love story aspect is ....stale, not sure what to say exactly, but the love story could have been better or left out. Great characters and I'll be ready for he next one.

I totally enjoy this series so far. Book 3 is still going strong. The action and dialogue are fantasist in. I like Daniel Faust and his friends. They are so loyal to each other and I like that. Craig Shaefer writes a fantastic series with black magic, sorcery, cops and the gangs. Truly action packed thoughout. Adam Verne does a good job with all the different voices. He does female voice well too. I am continuing book 4 which already out and I know I will definitely love it.

Another enjoyable entry in the Faust series

Great book for the car. The Faust series was interesting to get into as a prequel to the Harmony Black series. Would definitely recommend for commuters interested in the subject.

Daniel! How does he do it?

Daniel! How does he do it? I love how Crag Schaefer writes these books. There is so much plot that I can never imagine how Faust is going to get out of the mess. And it is normally the mess that he has created.

This one is no different. There is a bit more from the previous stories so technically you could read this without reading the others. However, I would recommend reading them in order. Although there are a few reminders for the first two books, it still is not enough to really give you the sense of the characters and all that they have gone through.

That said, there are all the same old characters in this. Thank goodness too! Book three and they are starting to feel like family.

Ok for pre-teen

Granted, this was the only book in the set that I read. As a student of political science, the story line lacked feasibility in many respects. Most objectionable to me personally was the premise that 700 years from now racism was still so blatant and polarizing. I found the storyline very shallow and predictable.

Perfectly Serviceable Urban Fantasy

Likeable main character. Love that there's only light romance and plenty of swearing. Good humored. Short. It's just not doing anything terribly unexpected or surprising.

Review Murder of Crows

We move at a quick pace into the mysterious events that are happening to a people in a place our main character would rather have forgotten. Her clash with the supernatural sets the stage for the next book and at the same time it's pulling you in deeper. Great job Folly Blaine bringing Annie Bellet's work to life.

Level Up

I had a fun enough time with Bellet's first novelette in this series -- the characters were amusing and Folly Blaine's narration was delightful -- so I listened to this short book in between some other long and more complicated novels.

As a result, I had a surprisingly good time with this one. Bellet did a very solid job of upping the stakes this time out. Jade is in a happy romantic relationship and is gaming with her friends. She's expecting the bad times to come, and when an estranged family member shows up, Jade faces it all with determination. The stakes are upped this time out, and the emotional weight and the fallout exacts a certain strain on the characters and their relationships with each other. In the previous volume, Jade and company seemed to get along a little too well. By the end of this book, that familiar comfort has been replaced with uncertainty and conflict, and I found myself ready to queue up the next one. (WHEN DOES IT COME OUT?!?!)

Folly Blaine continues to captivate, hitting all the right notes between romance, humor, adventure, and horror. She's the perfect narrator for this series, and a big part of the reason I'm ready for the third installment.

This isn't a complicated urban fantasy that subverts all the tropes of the genre. Instead, it's just an awful lot of fun and easy listening, and I'm looking forward to more.

Editors Select, March 2015 - When The Fire Sermon was presented to the team here at Audible, my ears immediately perked up. I am a bit of a YA junkie, and this fresh and compelling take on dystopian YA lit was exactly what I was looking for to get my next fix. 400 years ago, Earth experienced an apocalyptic event that nearly wiped out humanity. Ever since, any child that is born has a twin one is an Alpha and one is an Omega. Alphas are the rulers in society, while Omegas are treated like second class citizens. While most twins are separated soon after birth, Cass and Zach remain together until they are teenagers, and their separation may lead to a war between the classes. I can't wait to dive into this inventive new world with Lauren Fortgang a personal favorite narrator of mine guiding my way.

Cannot make it!!!

Rarely do I stop a book, but this one I can't finish. It's painful.

The writer had a good concept but overwrites constantly with similes and metaphors. The character is not developed. You only meet the main character for a long time.

It reminded me of a wanna-be Divergent or Hunger Games, but very little development of plot.

The reader -- yawn -- fell asleep twice. Again - she read exactly like Hunger Games with very little change in pace or voice. To be fair - there were few direct quotes.

It's mostly an author telling about a story rather than letting her characters speak.

It's one of my worst reads, and I love this genre. I generally am pretty accepting of new ideas.

Disappointed.

I had high hopes for this and liked the concept, but it never really panned out. At points it was like reading to Thoreau. Too much descriptive detail without much plot.

Everyone has a twin. Your twin dies? You die. A+!

another homerun story and slam dunk of a performance, Peter and Pete do it again

why change the pronunciation of a name?

The story was pretty good, the narrator was good apart from one thing. Why change the pronunciation of a lead characters name? Ragen keeps getting pronounced as Reagen in this book. If the narrator had changed I could understand - but when it's the same narrator that did the other books so well? I honestly struggled to finish this one.

Fun well written short!

Excellent story that helps pass the time between series books. Cant wait for more!

Great Story, Narrator's Voice Too Quiet At Times

i do not tisten to audio books in a quiet room with earbuds. I plug my phone into my car stereo & listen while i drive to work at 70 mph on the freeway. OK, I like the story a lot! I like the timbre of the narrator's voice. But I have a problem with the wide range of volume he uses. Usually he is easy to understand but when he decides to be dramatic in a tense moment in the tale I find him to be difficult to understand. My Phone volume is all the way up and so is my stereo. It is ridiculous!!

Unremembered, Unforgotten, and Unchanged

At its heart this series is about how corporate greed can so easily come to define a society. Its about how misguided ambitions can masquerade as technologies that are revolutionary. As well, this tale is about how consumers come to covet products and services without even questioning the safety of what is being bought and the motivations of the makers of products. In this case the product happens to be genetic enhancements but it is possible to substitute any service or product on the market today for the Sci fi tech described in this tale. Brody's writing style complements Julia Whelan's narrative skills to build a series full of realistic characters facing difficult choices. Whelan masters the heartless and manipulative villain as well as the innocent and passionate heroine who has her mind wiped again and again. Together these 3 books challenge readers to consider what parts of humanity are worth preserving and what parts are worth fighting against.

Narrator is awesome!

I started this series because of the narrator (she's my favorite). I finished this series because the author captured me with her words! Loved it

Bittersweet!

The last installment of the Unremembered series was probably the best in my opinion. I couldn't quit listening to it. It was super action packed and full of twists and turns. Serafina has had her memories so messed up and the associated feelings that go with them to the point in this third book she is not the girl we knew in books one and two. She is guilt ridden and anxious and trying to please Dr. A. She has been brain washed to think the "objective" is all that matters.

She is manipulated by those for her and also by those who want to bring the company down and her along with it. After some serious events occur she looks for the origins of who she really is. There is a lot of soul searching in this book, though she wonders if she has a soul.

It did not end at all how I thought it might. It was a bittersweet melancholy ending and I keep thinking about it. I'm not happy about the ending but I am satisfied with it even though it would not have been my first choice.

I've read a lot of YA series and this one could just as easily be categorized with adult fantasy. I'm sad it's over.

What disappointed you about Broken Wings?

I couldn't figure out if the writing was just so bad that the narrator couldn't revive it or if the Narrator was just so annoying that she ruined the book...either way it was really irritating and I can't understand why it has so many good reviews!

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The story itself was good...in the hands of a better author, it could have been amazing.

Would you be willing to try another one of Susannah Joness performances?

My first reaction is to say absolutely not! But...maybe, just as an experiment...maybe she wouldn't be so annoying reading a well written book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Broken Wings?

I would cut back all her silly swooning at the most idiotic times...it's so random, her life can be in mortal danger and she's talking about how cute some guy is? WTF?

I had to force myself to finish listening to this book, it's TERRIBLY written and while I gave the second book a chance i'm not sure if I'll be able to make myself read the third.

The way the story line intertwines with mortal and immortality. A 17 yr old girl being portrayed as what would appear to be a 13yr old

I like the second installment of this series. There is a lot of struggle in this one, but I am still hooked.
