How the Garcia Girls lost their reader

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I was expecting this book to be entertaining per previous reviews. However, i found myself lost in a myriad of stories and points of views. The book changes from a narrative of at least 5 characters the do not even give perspective into the same "story". They each go off into different times in the life that have no correlation. It's almost as if the book should have been broken down into several short stories of different people at one point or another in NY or the Dominican Republic. While some of these stories were good, overall the book was lacking a seamless transition.

Has How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents turned you off from other books in this genre?

It will not. I'm always excited to find new authors.

I continue listening to this only because I paid for it. If I'd borried it from the library, I'd return it before listening to the end.

It's tedious. It lacks the joy of life inherent in hispanic culture. Each character monotonously probes their inner feelings.

Could not wait to finish book.

No overall big plot or theme. Seems like just mundane tales of everyday events. Boring.

Difficult to follow

I normally listen to all books start to finish but I just couldn't keep going with this one. It felt disjointed, the stories jumped all over from time and place. It was jumbled and I was left disappointed.

Compelling

This book is extraordinary: graceful, imaginative writing; excellent narration; fascinating story. But for those wishing for a lightheartedly merry romp through imaginaryland, you should consider another book. The novel explores grim aspects of our nation's early history - it is gripping, but also heartbreaking. Read it! But not when you're down in the dumps.

YA fiction at its very best

A fantastic book. Set in Boston before and during the opening of Revolutionary War, Octavian Nothing tells the odd story of a young boy of African origin, who is raised with the finest classical education by a college of philosophers as part of a noble experiment. Yet, there is much about the world he has been kept ignorant of, including the fact that the men who would establish a new democracy prosper from the labor of slaves who look like him and have no intention of freeing them. Though this might have been a pedestrian premise in the hands of another author, Anderson's colorful characters, keen wit, and delightful use of 18th century language make for a rich, unique narrative, its fanciful-sounding tone artfully masking a moving, serious work.

Like the very best YA authors, Anderson never sells short the reader's intelligence, putting Octavian in situations where the truth isn't always pretty and questions without answers lead Octavian to even more challenging questions and ideas. Some of these are probably a little over the head of the average 13 year old (or likely to annoy the kind of overprotective parents who can't accept that their kids might be able to reason for themselves), but Anderson handles the weightier concepts with subtlety, allowing them to exert their gravitational pull on the reader's mind without interfering with the story. Which is entertaining, full of twists, poignant, and wonderfully written. The kind of book someone can read in adolescence, then enjoy again in a few years as an adult, with a different take.

If you enjoy American history from a different angle, language, and storytelling at its finest, don't overlook this one. M.T. Anderson rocks.

difficult to listen to

We found the narrator difficult to understand, and when following along in the book we noticed that he missed words altogether. After Dad recovered from his cold, he finished reading this one aloud for us. Loved the story, though. It was written in the 19th century, and therefore don't expect cultural sensitivity and scientific accuracy.

Not so young

I bought this for my 11 year old son because he was interested in ancient Rome and especially Hannibal. However, I did not realize this book was written in 1887. The Victorian era prose was, shall we say, not to his liking. After reading the Publisher's Summary, I had for some reason thought the book was more current. Anyway, I would have liked to have been aware of this before buying it.

I'm J E A L O U S!

I am supercalifragilistic jealous of their epic detour. MAN did I ever want to be on it. If you love America, travel, hot boys, unexpected "detours", full interesting characters, fun, laughter, music, love ECT. Then this is the book for you.

Its inspiring, fun, heavy, and lighthearted. I KNOW! Narrator was also great, not distracting and a good flow.

So what are you waiting for? Get to it!

The narrator saves the day

All I was hoping for was a nice, quick summer reading, however I found myself struggling to make some progress with this book since it was so dull.

Thank heavens I picked this audiobook up and ended up enjoying the story, otherwise I suspect I would have not finished it.

A very cute, very fun summer read. Perfect for fans of Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard. The ending was a little un-realistic (for me) but I enjoyed the book as a whole.

Slow and a bit boring

What disappointed you about Amy and Rogers Epic Detour?

The pacing was just so slow. I realize not a lot of action can happen during a (realistic) road trip, but even the conversation was at a snails pace. They played 20 questions a lot, too. Uh, yeah...no thanks.

This is going to be quite a short review, I fear. I am having difficulty coming up with words for my opinion on Amy & Roger's Epic Detour.

Amy Curry was in a car accident several months before the start of this story. An accident in which her father died. With her brother, Charlie, shipped off to rehab and her mother across the country setting up a new house...Amy is alone. She is waiting out the end of the school year then will be transported from California to Connecticut. Transported by a virtual stranger. Roger.

Roger is on his own journey of sorts. Recently the victim of a breakup, he hopes to track down in ex-girlfriend in the hopes of winning her back. Driving Amy cross country is a means to an end.

What they each find on this trip was and unexpected bond, unexpected feeling and an eventual healing. The healing of Roger's broken heart and Amy's broken soul.

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour should have been a great story. It could have been filled with great moments, fun filled adventures and heart breaking confessions. Unfortunately, it was filled more with boredom than anything else. The pacing was entirely too slow for me and the playlists at the beginning of most of the chapters had me rolling my eyes.

Could have been more touching

I liked the idea and concept, but the characters lacked real emotions. It felt like an episode of Degrassi or something. I wish the characters were more believable and that the dialogue was more fulfilling. Still worth a read

Great message, Good Story

I'm a Teacher Librarian who read this selection with my high school student book club. This story is an excellent vehicle to bring wonderful messages to young and old alike on how to live a good life. There is a lot of football action in the story which at first was off-putting but as I continued, I found that I learned a great deal about playing football from the players viewpoint. There were times I yelled at Mike, the main character because of his choices & being oblivious to the solution to his problems But as the story progressed, I could see things from his point of view. It's a truly unique approach - dealing with loss, the war in Afghanistan, the way people deal with grief - or don't deal with grief. Totally worth reading. I highly recommend it.

very interesting read!

this was my first book by Cheryl rainfield. that being said, I didn't really know what to expect. I will tell you that I really like dark things comma so I really enjoyed this book. I appreciated the author's style and the power in her words. As I said before though it is a really dark book so I will say that it could be triggering for some people comma butt it's a very interesting read or make that listen and I will definitely be listening again. Plus on a side note the narrator did a really awesome job with the story as well.

It really resonates

I love this book. As someone who was abused and who still engages in SH because I've never sought therapy, it resonates so clearly. My abuser wasn't my father and I'm not gay so I didn't face those additional challenges but sometimes, through Kendra, it is like Cheryl is writing what I felt - and still do. I want to listen to it again and again.

Very Interesting Premise and Story

I'm a senior citizen, but I loved the Janey series by Caroline B. Cooney. Our library had all but this book, so I donated it, to finish their series.

The way the author describes the murder scenes you feel like your there and the character when it happens and the music and French lady talking sometimes just made it even better. I love this book.
