    Soon to be a major motion picture with Bette Midler, Laverne Cox, and Abigail Breslin!
    Meet Billy Bloom, new student at the ultra-white, ultra-rich, ultra-conservative Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy and drag queen extraordinaire. Actually, "drag queen" does not begin to describe Billy and his fabulousness. Any way you slice it, Billy is not a typical 17-year-old, and the Bible Belles, Aberzombies, and Football Heroes at the academy have never seen anyone quite like him before. But thanks to the help and support of one good friend, Billy's able to take a stand for outcasts and underdogs everywhere in his own outrageous, over-the-top, sad, funny, brilliant, and unique way.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Freak Show has it all. It's hilarious, sad, sexy, and glamorous - just the way life should be." (Perez Hilton)
    "Gutsy, funny, over-the-top Billy Bloom is a profile in courage." (The Washington Post)

    Amazing story
    I loved this book!
    But I gotta say, not from the beginning. At first I hated the way it was written, and considered taking it off my list (of books, I have to read - in order), but then I looked at some pages further into the novel, and I just wanted to read it. And suddenly I couldn't put it down! I started liking Billy, and I really liked BlahBlahBlah, and thought it was amazing to just not really give a character a name, or at least not right away.
    The story has deffinitely changed me, and I feel proud, when I read it. And the way the people treat Billy in most of the book, hurt me to read. Especially because us non-straight-people have it so easy in Denmark compared to that anyway!
    Since I finished the book, I began with another one, and I only read two pages. Cuz it's just not the same, it's not FREAK SHOW! So I think it will take a while for me to enjoy other books.
    I deffinitely need to read other of James st. James's books, cuz he knows how to tell a good story and make it seem real. I cried several times, while reading, but at the end, I couldn't, and I hated that, cuz I really wanted to cry. First because of the ending, which was very touching, and second, because it was over.
    as expected
    as expected
    We're all Freaks
    Looking forward to seeing the movie version coming out soon. The story was a bit hard to get in to at first but once the main characters developed it was hard to put down. I would rate this at 3.5 out of 5 and recommend it to straight and gay teenage readers along with adults with the same interests.
    Fun and Fab!
    Fast paced and fun! I ended up reading it in one sitting because I had to know what was going to happen next!
    I also love the first-person narration for the story, as I think that everyone (teen drag queen or not) can sympathize with at least part of Billy's story - finding your own identity, looking for love, the pressures of high school, moving to a new city, being out of one's comfort zone, or persisting against the odds.
    While some of these themes are as old as time, the drag queen in training aspect of the story is a fresh twist. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for something out of the ordinary.
    Five Stars
    Great Condition item!

    Isis Blake hasn't fallen in love in three years, 43 weeks, and two days. Or so she thinks.
    The boy she maybe-sort-of-definitely loved and sort-of-maybe-definitely hated has dropped off the face of the planet in the face of tragedy, leaving a Jack Hunter-shaped hole. Determined to be happy, Isis fills it in with lies and puts on a brave smile for her new life at Ohio State University.
    But the smile lasts only until he shows up. The menace from her past - her darkest secret, Nameless - is attending OSU right alongside her. And he's whispering that he has something Isis wants - something she needs to see to move forward. To move on.
    Isis has always been able to pretend everything is okay. But not anymore. Isis Blake might be good at putting herself back together. But Jack Hunter is better.

    Satisfying Conclusion, Not the Best in the Series.
    I thought this was a great conclusion to the series. The humor and heart that I loved so much starting with the first book was very much present here as well. My main criticism, and reason for giving four stars instead of five, was because of an overload on the strange way Isis talks. Don't get me wrong, it's something I love about her, and it's a big reason I found the first book so unique, but in Remember Me Forever it felt a bit like a gimmick. There was sooo much of it and because of that if ended up sometimes feeling a forced. I will say that for that same reason though, the times when Isis was serious and not making strange jokes did feel all the more important.
    ~~~~~~
    MINOR PLOT SPOILERS (though really, none of this should be a surprise, because it's what we all assumed would happen)
    ~~~~~~
    It was awesome to finally see Isis and Jack really get to be together. Getting to see Nameless get his due was very satisfying. It would've been nice for Nameless to be a little more humanized... I think the best villains are people who are not 100% evil overall, even if they are totally evil TOWARDS their victim. And since all we really got to see of him was from Isis and even Jack's perspective, he came off as this completely evil person who you can't believe was somehow able to fool everyone else into thinking he wasn't satan's spawn.
    The new secondary characters were fine, but I found myself missing the cast of characters we got to know in the first two books. Kayla and Wren were there, and there was a moment with Avery, but the new characters didn't live up to the same standards I came to know from the B-characters in the earlier books.
    ~~~~~~
    BIG SPOILER
    ~~~~~~
    Why does EVERY book seem to HAVE to end with the couple either getting engaged or married in the epilogue? Huh?? I'm really kind of over that. Though I do appreciate seeing that glimpse of them happy in the future. So whatever, I guess.
    Ohio State
    Isis, Jack and Will Cavanaugh all are hugely intelligent people, and when the scenes open on a college campus, I hoped I was reading about freshman life at Stanford. It turns out that Isis has not felt comfortable leaving her mentally fragile mom at home alone, however, so she enrolls at the nearby state college campus with a plan to visit her on weekends twice a month. Isis's decision lures creepy, attractive Will to follow her there. The book opens and Isis and Jack are estranged.

    Publisher's Summary:
    An emotionally raw debut about the dangers of blind faith - and the power of having faith in oneself.
    The cult known as the Community has taken everything from 17-year-old Minnow: 12 years of her life, her family, her ability to trust. And when she rebelled, they took away her hands, too. Now their Prophet has been murdered and their camp set aflame, and it's clear that Minnow knows something - but she's not talking. As she languishes in juvenile detention, she struggles to un-learn everything she has been taught to believe, adjusting to a life behind bars and recounting the events that led up to her incarceration. But when an FBI detective approaches her about making a deal, Minnow sees she can have the freedom she always dreamed of - if she's willing to part with the terrible secrets of her past. With a harrowing poetic voice, this gripping story is perfect for listeners who like their novels dark and smart.

    The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly
    The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes intrigued me in so many ways. I was immediately drawn into the story from the very first sentence! A girl who has no hands - extremely sad. A girl whose hands were cut off purposely by someone else - horribly tragic and frustrating. Minnow's hands were taken from her just because she didn't want to marry someone who already had eight wives. When Minnow was five, her family joined a religious cult lead by a prophet named Kevin. Therefore, they were known as Kevinians.
    This compelling story has so many different facets, so once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. The cult life, Minnow's anger and confusion, the sadistic prophet, Jude and his struggles, Minnow's escape and first confrontation with a city dweller, and the forensic psychologist Dr. Wilson and his affect on Minnow. This book is inspiring with the message that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or believes, it only matters what you think!:)
    I honestly didnât expect it to be this good, but Iâm so glad I finally read it
    ***Review originally posted on lysskreads.wordpress.com***
    âBeware of false prophets, which come to you in sheepâs clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.â
    The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly had me on such an emotional roller coaster. Oakes had me wanting to cry for Minnow, cringing when she felt pain, and absolutely shocked. I coulddnât have asked for more from this book. I honestly didnât expect it to be this good, but Iâm so glad I finally read it. From that first line, âI am a blood-soaked girl,â I was caught up in Minnowâs story.
    Minnowâs story is set in a juvenile detention center, in which she is realizing everything sheâs been told is a lie and trying to learn whatâs true about the world. With flashbacks to how she escaped the Community and what led up to it, Minnow Bly keeps you on your toes wanting to know more about her life as a Kevinian.
    Raised in the Community from the age of five, Minnow has always questioned the Prophet about God and the Kevinian religion, much to the Prophetâs dismay. After a disturbing announcement, Minnow starts to fight back and , but in the end sheâs held down and her hands are cut off under the Prophetâs orders for her blasphemous behavior.
    That scene in the book had me cringing and wanting to cry. It was absolutely terrible.

    Publisher's Summary:
    From critically acclaimed author Alice Oseman comes a smartly crafted contemporary YA novel, perfect for listeners who love Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl. This is an utterly captivating and authentic new teen novel from the author of Solitaire, which VOYA said "could put her among the great young adult fiction authors".
    Frances Janvier spends most of her time studying.
    Everyone knows Aled Last as that quiet boy who gets straight A's.
    You probably think that they are going to fall in love or something. Since he is a boy and she is a girl.
    They don't. They make a podcast.
    In a world determined to shut them up, knock them down, and set them on a cookie-cutter life path, Frances and Aled struggle to find their voices over the course of one life-changing year. Will they have the courage to show everyone who they really are? Or will they be met with radio silence?
    Members Reviews:
    Simply amazing
    I love Alice Oseman's previous book Solitaire and I love Radio Silence just as much. One thing I love about Oseman's books is how realistic her teenage characters are. It's refreshing to read a book about teenagers where they actually sound and act like teenagers. (It helps that she is only a few years older than her characters.) I also love the diversity in this book in terms of both race and sexuality. It is something that is very much needed in books for all ages.
    One of my favorite things in this book is the friendship between Frances and Aled. They are both so sweet and wonderful and their friendship was great. I loved how it helped both characters grow. I especially loved their text conversations, they always made me smile.
    I didn't expect to love the side characters as much as I did. I also didn't expect to hate a character as much as I did. Every character is three-dimensional and so interesting to read about. It's hard not to care for them (except for the one).
    I appreciate how Oseman included an emotionally abusive relationship in this book. In other books I've read that mentioned abuse it was almost always physical abuse. Emotional abuse can be just as damaging so it's good it's talked about with the same level of seriousness.
    I did have one problem with the book and that is that the beginning is a bit slow. The chapters throughout the book were short so that made it easier to keep reading, but I felt like it took a bit to get the story really moving. However, once the story gets going I couldn't put it down.
    Overall, Radio Silence is a wonderful story full of laughs, heartbreak, and beautiful friendship. I can't wait to read it again.
    Strong friendship and message
    The book centers around two friends, one who is the anonymous Creator behind a podcast and one (the narrator) who is a fan of the podcast. It's a very fandom-y story at times, though not in a love letter to fandom kind of way; you both see love and support from fans but also harassment and doxing. Despite that, there's definitely a sense of the creation of this podcast and its associated art being home for the narrator and her best friend.
    A big point of the book is that there's not one best path for everyone after secondary school. "University isn't the right next step for everyone, even people who get good grades" is probably the most key message here, and I thought it was handled well.
    I read this largely because there's a demisexual character.

    Soon the other families are asking for their own goodbye days with Carver - but he's unsure of their motives. Will they all be able to make peace with their losses, or will these goodbye days bring Carver one step closer to a complete breakdown or - even worse - prison?
    Includes the song "The Motion of the Earth" by Jeff Zentner, performed by Jeff Zentner and Elin Palmer.
    Critic Reviews:
    "One of the most stunningly heartfelt, lump-in-your-throat novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Hold on to your heart: this book will wreck you, fix you, and most definitely change you." (Becky Albertalli, author of Morris Award winner Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda)
    "Zentner does an excellent job in creating empathetic characters, especially his protagonist Carver, a budding writer whose first-person account of his plight is artful evidence of his talent." (Booklist)
    "Narrator Michael Crouch's tonal changes are crucial to the story of Carver, a 17-year-old whose texting has contributed to the death of his three best friends. Crouch expresses Carver's regret and grief.... Crouch relieves Carver's anguish with glints of humor that are fully realized in the flashbacks of his adventures with his friends. Crouch equally succeeds with the secondary characters.... Crouch's shifting tones highlight the many aspects of grief and the power of connection." (AudioFile)

    Text "car accident"
    While this maybe unnerving for whether coping with the loss of friends or a grieving mom and Dad.
    This book was phenomenal from to finish. Sad,funny at times, and thought provoking.
    Read this one before Zentner's debut novel.
    Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
    Well, it's not one of those books that leaves me wishing I could get those hours of my life back, but it's also not one that I will remember ever happened.
    What does Michael Crouch bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    I don't think that the narration was anything remarkable, but I think the narration was better than the story.
    Do you think Goodbye Days needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    No, this is a stand alone story.

    "Narrator Robbie Daymond's soft, calming tone is appropriate for the peaceful world of 17-year-old Sal.... Daymond's narration, though low-key, gives rounded portraits of all the story's characters and doesn't minimize Sal's heartache or his attempts to control his temper." (AudioFile)

    Happy Birthday to me!
    I just want to say that I love the way his books make me feel. I love that there's no real plot, we just get to live with the characters for a snip-it of their lives. I love the way the author describes what's in the hearts of his characters. I just feel so good all over... I hope someone is loving this author. Cause I want to put him in my pocket and keep him with me always. I finished this book on my birthday, and there couldn't have been a better gift for myself.
    good story, OK narrator
    story alright, narrator does not pronounce words/names with mexican accent, ruined some moments for me.
    Dragged on
    Beginning was good and the end was good...inbetween dragged on. The writing was good but not as beautiful as other books.
    Heartfelt and endearing, although a little simple
    Another Saenz story that hits the heart and pulls the strings. I love the author's ability to develop characters that I find so similar to my own experiences. Excellent storytelling. A great read for a teen or adult.
    Such a great story
    The story was amazing. I love the author. My only complaint is that the narrators version of a girls voice is not good. He had that cliche version that people use.

    Amazing
    Amazing book that everyone can relate too and never gets boring no matter how many times I listen
    Just as Awesome as reading it
    While I could listen to Chris Colfer read to me from the phone book, this was much more fun. Chris makes all the characters come alive with the different voices and wonderful narration. I had read the book first, which was great, but listening to it being read by the author really makes it one of the best. I love how we can know exactly how he envisioned the scenes and inflection of the dialogue because the actual author is reading it to us. great job
    Fantastic!!
    I had chills the last two chapters! I really loved this book from start to finish. Chris Colfer never disappoints!
    Fabulous story!!
    I officially adore Chris Colfer. This is an amazing story that manages to invoke a range of emotions, ideas and feelings that I will probably be processing over the next couple of days. I've read most of Mr. Colfer's stories and there is a sincerity across all of them.
    The story is dedicated to his best friend, who he says has better memory than him and will remember what of it actually happened - so of course, I found myself wondering how much of it was 'real' and came away with the feeling that, like all good stories, it had the ring of truth in every moment. It is empowering and affirming and deeply sad, like a kaleidoscope of the beautiful and tragic of life.
    I hope he writes a lot more for years to come!
    A story to remember and think about.
    This book had me feeling different ways about these characters throughout the whole thing. I didn't think the under tones of Gay and Trans acceptance would be a huge part of the story but when I learned about the characters and lives they lived without anyone else knowing was fun and exciting. There are issues like passing was a bit odd at times and there are some times where a character is out of character but there small issues in an otherwise great story. One last mention the narrator was great (besides when a character cried that was off sounding.)

    A lot to unpack
    What made the experience of listening to American Street the most enjoyable?
    American Street is a lot to unpack. There were so many topics tackled in this book, it felt like a lot to wrap my head around, but if any book could juggle it, this one did it well enough where I wasn't extremely overwhelmed.
    Fabiola, the main character, is forced to deal with a ton of self discovery and issues when her mother is detained by immigration. She's forced to live with her relatives who while she knows them, there are many cultural differences between them. While Fabiola was born in the US, she was raised in Haiti. All her cousins are American raised, and living in a small urban area in Detroit, a lot of culture clashed between them( btw there was alot of background inclusion, Black Muslim characters, queer Black characters, traditional Vodou within the text without being demonized).
    I really felt for Fabiola. She spent a lot of the book knowing how she would help her mother become a citizen when approached by law enforcement to rat out a drug dealer. The conflict that came with finding out who the "real" dealer was, was so heart breaking and I wasn't sure she'd ever reunite with her mother.
    What I liked about this story was how Haitian people meshed with African-American folk and how Blackness wasn't a monolith. A lot of people are confused by Haiti, and as an fellow Afro-Latinx person, I dont feel like there are enough contemporary books with Haitian main characters about young people, especially living in the US.
    Immigration is often told from a brown perspective, often Central/South America folk who don't identify as black. This story reminds us that immigration doesn't have a specific face, the journey to a better life is a race-less desire.
    For lack of better way to describe Fabiola, her foreign-ness brought that out more ways than if she had been socialized and raised in the US.

    Ariel and Maya's lives collide unexpectedly when Ariel's mother shows up out of the blue with wild accusations: Ariel wasn't abandoned. Her father kidnapped her 14 years ago.
    What is Ariel supposed to believe? Is it possible Dad's woven her entire history into a tapestry of lies? How can she choose between the mother she's been taught to mistrust and the father who has taken care of her all these years?
    In best-selling author Ellen Hopkins' deft hands, Ariel's emotionally charged journey to find out the truth of who she really is balances beautifully with Maya's story of loss and redemption. This is a memorable portrait of two young women trying to make sense of their lives and coming face to face with themselves - for both the last and the very first time.

    A+++
    once again, Ellen Hopkins does an amazing job. she is favorite author. highly recommend reading all her books! I know I have!
    Invested start to finish.
    I know the paths of Maya and Ariel had to cross somehow. The way they do catches you off guard. The reader of ariels story is such a great voice actress, she had me tear many time throughout the book from the pain she mimics from the characters.
    10/10 will listen again.
    Not Ellen Hopkins' Best
    What did you like best about The You I've Never Known? What did you like least?
    The narrators for this book were beautifully chosen, and added a lot of personality to the characters. As for what I liked least? The plot summary! There is a MAJOR spoiler in the plot summary that completely ruined the experience for me. Rather than having that event come out of left field the way it was intended, I was waiting for it to happen. Very disappointing.
    How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    Change the plot summary and remove the spoiler! Also, the book felt a little long for me. There are definitely points at which it could have been shortened.
    What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    I am a big Ellen Hopkins fan, and have read physical copies of most of her novels, but this was my first audiobook experience with her. The story seemed to move along nicely in the audiobook version, and as previously stated the narrators performances added a lot of depth. But in future, I will probably just read her books rather than listening.
    Was The You I've Never Known worth the listening time?
    Yes and No. While it isn't my favorite from this author, it is an entertaining read overall.

    Amazing Narrator
    A thrilling story with a narrator who makes you feel like you are experiencing everything the character is experiencing. I loved every minute and was sad when it was over.
    So good!
    This book is so interesting. I love that it takes the mystery genre to Africa. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep anyone enthralled. The reader is great. I learned a few new things about Kenya and The Congo as well. This is well worth a credit.
