An unforgettable story of bravery, grief, and love in impossible times.
The missing girl is Jewish. I need you to find her before the Nazis do.
Amsterdam, 1943. Hanneke spends her days procuring and delivering sought-after black market goods to paying customers, her nights hiding the true nature of her work from her concerned parents, and every waking moment mourning her boyfriend, who was killed on the Dutch front lines when the Germans invaded. She likes to think of her illegal work as a small act of rebellion.
On a routine delivery, a client asks Hanneke for help. Expecting to hear that Mrs. Janssen wants meat or kerosene, Hanneke is shocked by the older woman's frantic plea to find a person - a Jewish teenager Mrs. Janssen had been hiding, who has vanished without a trace from a secret room. Hanneke initially wants nothing to do with such dangerous work but is ultimately drawn into a web of mysteries and stunning revelations that lead her into the heart of the resistance, open her eyes to the horrors of the Nazi war machine, and compel her to take desperate action.
Meticulously researched, intricately plotted, and beautifully written, Girl in the Blue Coat is an extraordinary, gripping audiobook from a bright new voice in historical fiction.

    A most powerful book
Where does Girl in the Blue Coat rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
top 10% with Willa Cather and Kent Haruf
What was one of the most memorable moments of Girl in the Blue Coat?
there were many but I particularly appreciated the discussion following the ending.
Have you listened to any of Natalia Paynes other performances before? How does this one compare?
Natalia was amazing. Pronouncing the Dutch words and making the story so vivid. I have not listened to her narrations before
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I was on a cruise in Tahiti so I listened at night. But I am on my second listening.
    Any additional comments?
Thank you Monica for falling in love with the Dutch and presenting such a tumultuous time so well and powerfully.
A gripping Story of Love and War
Another reviewer did provide a spoiler for this book. Without reiterating it, I thoroughly understand why things unfolded the way they did. I enjoyed the author's sense of character, time and place. Her characters were mostly young people, trying to navigate a world at war, at an age when you think everything should be black and white and they realize, too late, that there's so many shades of gray.
I love the characters, their bravery, their cowardice... it's a young adult novel that will appeal to adults. The writing sucks you in and won't let go, the narration is good (with some imprecise dialogue and slightly-off accents). Well worth your time and credit.
    Very weak book
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    The performance was fine;
What was most disappointing about Monica Hesses story?
The characters were not believable; why would a gentile switch ID's with a jew then get captured and not attempt to talk her way out of trouble? Totally and completely unbelievable
    Wow!
What a great story,I love to anticipate the story but was not able to do that.

    Format: Unabridged

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-22-16
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 244 votes
    Genres: Teens, Fiction & Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Speak, this extraordinary debut novel shares the unforgettable story of a young woman as she struggles to find strength in the aftermath of an assault.
Eden was always good at being good. Starting high school didn't change who she was. But the night her brother's best friend rapes her, Eden's world capsizes.
What was once simple is now complex. What Eden once loved - who she once loved - she now hates. What she thought she knew to be true is now lies. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she's supposed to tell someone what happened, but she can't. So she buries it instead. And she buries the way she used to be.
Told in four parts - freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years - this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman's strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.

    Rough but Rewarding Read
    Any additional comments?
This book is not the easiest to finish due to the emotional content. I remember taking it in smaller doses when it got to be too much. Other times, I took large doses and stayed up till 6 in the morning. Overall, I was really moved by this book. It brought me back in time to when the popular, older girls would hang in the bathroom in high school and put their make-up on in the mirror. It brought back memories of being a freshman living in my first college dorm. Alas, it was hard to sit and wait for her to finally be able to tell someone she was raped, but the book was worthwhile.
    moving
the story was utterly fascinating. couldn't stop listening. was very moved by the whole message. thankful for this book.
Hard to read, but didn't stop tell it ended
Tears, tears, tears. Good story that everyone should hear. Everyone needs to understand the fear that she felt for so long.
One of the best books I've ever read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If they want to understand what it means to experience sexual trauma, then yes.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Way I Used to Be?
Character's description of how she tried to overcome the experience of rape by forcing herself to have sex and eventually becoming promiscuous. This made sense of a phenomenon that on the surface of it, makes no sense.
Have you listened to any of Rebekkah Rosss other performances before? How does this one compare?
    no
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    .
    Unbearable
What did you like best about The Way I Used to Be? What did you like least?
That Eden finally told someone. The fact that it portrayed a girl of 14 having sex ,this book showed how rape can destroy. This book could have ended 3 hrs earlier.
Has The Way I Used to Be turned you off from other books in this genre?
    not sure
    Which scene was your favorite?
When she finally opens her mouth and tells
Do you think The Way I Used to Be needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    No

    I couldn't wait to walk
I listen to my audiobooks when I exercise each day. As much as I dislike exercising I found I could not wait to get out and walk so I could hear what was next. There was so much to love about this book. The characters, the twists and turns, imagining the different endings that could turn out. I highly recommend it
A must read for girl's and women born to narcicistic Mothers
Save yourself the trouble of years of trying to figure out your relationship with your self absorbed Mother. All of the answers are here in this wonderful fiction novel. Excellent reader as well. Read this and be free! It was never you fault
    What an amazing read!
I couldn't have asked for a better story. Listening to this young woman struggle through her past to find her truth, I felt like I was reading a version of my own life story. Deeply moving.
    My heart drowned
Cassie grows up in an emotionally and mentally abusive household. It's not a secret and it's not something that she will walk away from easily, especially because her mother checks her into a mental facility at age 15. Now Cassie is 18 and has checked herself out of the facility. With no one to guide her through a free life, how will she navigate?
I found this book to be so completely soul destroying on so many levels. You go through playing the blame game, knowing full well where to place the blame but by the end you kind of wonder if maybe you were wrong about that. There are a few real heros in this book that make you want to jump into the audio waves and hug the characters. Cassie's best friend is just magical in her ability to forgive and to accept. Cassie's therapist makes me want to try therapy again. And that is saying something. Ha. The author, Kerry Kletter, although I do feel like she could have spent more time in certain places during Cassie's life and less time in others, really told a story that was so engrossing and emotional. Really, very good.
Jorjeana Marie is a favorite of mine. She plays rolls of young women so exceptionally but can also turn around and pull out a New Jersey accent or a male voice that is so believable, there is no questioning it. The audio quality was stellar as well. This is an all around 5 star audio.
    Could not stop listening!
This mother/daughter relationship story transcends age groups. Kletter manages lyrical prose to awaken senses, humor to release tension, and uncanny insight to wars of the heart.

    Critic Reviews:
"...this is an exquisitely drawn, deeply heartfelt look at a time and place not often addressed. Hitchcock's measured prose casts a gorgeous, almost otherworldly feel over the text, resulting in a quietly lovely look at the various sides of human nature and growing up in a difficult world." (Booklist)
"Using alternating narratives, debut novelist Hitchcock deftly weaves these stories together, setting them against the backdrop of a native Alaska that readers will find intoxicating. The gutsiness of these four teens who, at heart, are trying to find their places in the world and survive against challenging odds, will resonate with readers of all ages." (Publishers Weekly)

Wonderful compelling story weaving. I enjoyed the intensity of the characters emotional lives and how it ended.
Best 5 hours I've spent all summer
Beautiful story. Lovely characters. Highly recommend. My sincere thanks to the author and performers. Bravo.
    Amazing, Heart Lifting Stories
I loved this book! Four compelling stories of four teenagers leading separate, yet intertwined lives. The story is beautifully written with emotion, dedication, acceptance, loyalty, excitement and selfless love of each character in different ways blending all together in the final chapter of the book. All the narrators are truly amazing in their unique characterization of the character they are portraying. The author and narrators are outstanding. This a very enjoyable, captivating audiobook, and I highly recommend it.
    What a wonderful story!
I absolutely loved this book! The writer is incredibly gifted at painting a picture that puts you right there with the characters - right down to the smells surrounding them.
The story of Ruth, Dora, Alice and Hank and the way their lives and stories intertwine is beautifully written and read wonderfully by each of the characters.
    What a wonderful surprise!
    Absolutely wonderful
I loved the story so much. I loved the different perspectives in each chapter and seeing the characters appear throughout the story. I loved all the different connections made and was completely blindsided by most of them. Absolutely wonderful and addicting.

Fifteen-year-old Amadou counts the things that matter. For two years what has mattered are the number of cacao pods he and his younger brother, Seydou, can chop down in a day. This number is very important. The higher the number, the safer they are, because the bosses won't beat them. The higher the number, the closer they are to paying off their debt and returning home to Moke and Auntie. Maybe.

    Sweetness and bitterness...
This book is a difficult read, describing the slave labor of children to produce what will ultimately become chocolate. It is well-written, well-read, gripping, and hopeful.
A little bit of post-production could have improved J. D. Jackson's terrific performance, and the author ties things up a little too tidily. But that being said, after reading this book you will never think of chocolate the same way again.

A sharply honest and moving debut perfect for fans of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Ask the Passengers.
Riley Cavanaugh is many things: punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy and others as a girl. But Riley isn't exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in über-conservative Orange County, the pressure - media and otherwise - is building up in Riley's life.
On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it's really like to be a gender fluid teenager. But just as Riley's starting to settle in at school - even developing feelings for a mysterious outcast - the blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley's real identity, threatening exposure. And Riley must make a choice: Walk away from what the blog has created - a lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe in - or stand up, come out, and risk everything.
From debut author Jeff Garvin comes a powerful and uplifting portrait of a modern teen struggling with high school, relationships, and what it means to be a person.
    Members Reviews:
    Read this, right now!!
While I was growing upat least where I was growing upthere werent any discussions about gender. The whole notion of anything besides the binaryin fact, any discussion about the term binary itselfwas simply nonexistent. So I grew up with that vague notion that something was amiss for me; that I was different, too different to put into words.
I knew that I never wanted to be defined as a woman. That the idea of having that label was annoying, to say the least. I didnt want to be identified as a man, either; I simply didnt want to be identified, period. I wanted to be human, nothing else. To be judged solely for my character and actions, not by gender. Being a feminist and, therefore, pro equality, helped with some understanding but it still didnt feel enough.
Then, recently, I read about nonbinary and genderfluid people and a new world opened to me. I finally found the definition Id always tried to express; why having to check the F or M in any form made me cringe so much. Why having to go to events about Womens day at work made me want to scream. I am nonbinary. I despise gender roles, I hate being dismissed by what may be between my legs. I dont care about the gender binary and I dream of a world where any person will have the freedom to define themselves as female or male as they wish or not to define themselves at all if they prefer. Where there wont be any boxes to check or, at least, an N/A option.
And then a friend read Symptoms of Being Human and raved about it on Facebook. I was immediately interested, craving the chance to have representationdone rightin a novel. And oh, how wonderful the experience was!
This is a magnificent book. It is important, it is well written, it is such a powerful testimony it seems like nonfiction. And yet the writing is so lyrical, so poetic, I couldnt stop noting quotes. Sharing quotes. Thinking about quotes.
Rileys story is a simple one, one that is happening right now to so many people out there. And thats the brilliancy of it; it speaks to hundreds of thousands of people who so far may be hiding, may be lost, may not even have figured out what is going on with them. Not just young people eitherremember what I said at the beginning, and Im almost 40 years old.

    Any additional comments?
I've had Rise of the Six on my kindle forever, but had never gotten around to it. Then I noticed that Jeff Hays was the narrator for the audio version and decided that was a good a way to make sure I got around to it. My problem with Rise isn't Jeff's narrations. Once again he does an excellent job bringing an varied cast to life. My problem was with the story itself. Was it bad? No, not at all. My problem is that it didn't seem as if it knew what kind of book it wanted to be. I'm not adverse to authors mashing several genres together, in fact I often like it, but this one just seems to be trying too hard and in the end I got the sense that the book was having an identity crisis. Is it a sci-fi book, a fantasy, a superhero book, a YA romance (kind of odd are plenty of elements of a love triangle without all the characters in the love triangle actually being present for the majority of the book), a horror (zombies)? So many of the parts of the books made me think of different books/movies I've seen over the years, everything from Wizard of Oz to The Matrix. (of course I'm sure some people who've read it will totally disagree and wonder how I could think such things, but hey it's my review/my opinion.) IN the end I just couldn't get a good feel for what Matt Ryan was aiming for. It's interesting, and I'll admit a part of me would like to know what happens next, not enough that I'll be jumping into book 2 right away, but perhaps someday.
    good concept, okay writing
Overall interesting story line, though some of the writing wasn't great. I will probably read the next book in the series

    not a happy reader
I found it distracting, how much the writer seems to hate women. I expect a female author to create amazing female characters. i felt the author was being catty and petty to the women she wrote. I was disappointed.

On the Fence, was a really good book, I should've been read this book. I couldn't stop listening to it once I started on it. Charlie, and Braden, I knew they were going to end up together close or at the end. That's how most stories end.
Also, the narrator did a good job when she was talking as both male and female.
    Nice story
I liked the atmosphere of the story .. the narrator did a good job in capturing Charlie's voice, there were some things that bothered me in the story and some deep issues were brushed off like it wasn't a big deal but I liked it nonetheless .. not sure if I recommend it but if you do read be prepared for some insane time with Charlie's brothers :D
    Heartwarming and funny!
This books was so cute! First book in a really long time that I couldnt stop listening to. Even though it was very mushy, I enjoyed it. The relationship between Charlie and Braden was adorable and made me smile. Im a sucker for young love and this book portrayed it well.
    Witty and entertaining
This is my second book by this author and I'm definitely going to be purchasing more. It's a cute, light read that keeps you entertained. The narrator does a good job as well. Very happy with this purchase.
