Title: No Traveler Returns: The Lost Years of Bela Lugosi

Author: Gary D. Rhodes, Bill Kaffenberger

Narrator: J.T. McDaniel

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 hrs and 3 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-29-16

Publisher: BearManor Media

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes

Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios

Publisher's Summary:

"Gary Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger have added the final chapter to Bela Lugosi's career, combining fascinating unknown details of his film and stage activities with post-WWII film history. Superbly researched and written as an engrossing story of an actor's struggle against professional decline. A must-read!" (Robert Cremer, author of Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape)

"Gary Rhodes represents that elusive Gold Standard in narrative research into the full depth and breadth of Bela Lugosi's complicated career. Rhodes' devotion to the banishment of myth, and to its replacement with frank and humanizing truth, has provided a wealth of historical storytelling that, in turn, renders the actor's known body of work all the more fascinating and comprehensible. Just when I catch myself believing I know all there is to be known about Lugosi, along come Gary Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger with a fresh brace of revelations. The process advances immeasurably in No Traveler Returns: The Lost Years of Bela Lugosi." (Michael H. Price, coauthor of the Forgotten Horrors series)

"In No Traveler Returns, Bela Lugosi scholar extraordinaire Gary D. Rhodes and Bill Kaffenberger provide a fascinating time travel journey back to the late 1940s/early 1950s, when Lugosi - largely out of favor in Hollywood - embarked on a Gypsy-like existence of vaudeville, summer stock, and magic shows. While many historians have considered this era a limbo in Lugosi's career, with precious few facts unearthed, Rhodes and Kaffenberger take the listener along for a wide-eyed ride as Bela performs in a nightclub so notorious that armed guards keep watch on the roof, dresses as Dracula in a magic show where he and a gorilla (a man in a suit) play football with the guillotined head of a woman (a dummy), and races from one stock engagement to another without ever missing a cue. Never in his American career was Bela so busy, and never did his light shine so brightly, as he valiantly troupes to support his family, dominate age and illness, and please his audiences. It's a fastidiously researched education in the show business world of the time - and a stirring tribute to the charm, brilliance, and inexhaustible professionalism of the star who was Dracula." (Gregory William Mank, author of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff: The Expanded Story of a Haunting Collaboration)

Members Reviews:

Very well written and researched

This aspect of Bela Lugosi's career, when this magnetic performer was past his prime, may not seem to yield much of interest, but the authors have done an excellent job of unearthing some fascinating information. Lugosi was largely away from the silver screen but he was working feverishly, zig-zagging across America doing stage work, trying to position himself for a Broadway comeback, and maintaining his poise and dignity as he dealt with personal and professional decline.

There is much of interest for the Lugosiphile; my favorite chapter deals with the speculation that Lugosi's career was impacted by being blacklisted (as many actors were during the late '40's). Buy this well researched book to read the author's conclusions.

Title: John Cleese: The Inspirational Life Story of the Comedian, Public Speaker, and the Movie Star Who Helped Introduce Monty Python to the World

Length: 42 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-13-16

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios

Publisher's Summary:

John Cleese was born on October 27th, 1939 in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. He was the only child of Muriel and Reginald Francis Cleese. His parents earned a modest living. His father worked as an insurance salesman while Muriel was a stay-at-home mother, but they still sent their young son to private schools, intending to give him the best education and opportunities imaginable. John began his schooling at St. Peter's, a preparatory school when he was eight years old. Early on, Mr. Cleese showed promise, receiving a prize for English. Additionally, John was an athlete, excelling in cricket and soccer for much of his young life.

Unfortunately even during his early life, John had a complicated upbringing. His relationship with his mother was strained. Cleese is quoted as saying, "When I was a child and I was upset about something, my mother was not capable of containing that emotion, of letting me be upset but reassuring me, of just being with me in a calming way. She always got in a flap, so I not only had my own baby panics, fears, and terrors to deal with, but I had to cope with hers, too. Eventually I taught myself to remain calm when I was panicked, in order not to upset her. In a way, she had managed to put me in charge of her. At 18 months old, I was doing the parenting." Cleese would later go on to say that his mother was "supremely self-centered" and that she "did not take interest in anything that did not immediately involve her." Those issues would persist throughout much of Cleese's life.

OK if You Want a Quick Light Read

This is short and choppy.

More like a collection of vignettes.

Chapters are abreviated and don't go into much depth - basically a series of snpshots

Enjoyed most the quotes from Cleese's own augobiography

Reading this while recovering from back surgery, I could laugh the British way, with some restraint, so as not to bust my stitches! Enjoyed most the quotes from Cleese's own augobiography. Thank you! Jan

Title: Learning to Live out Loud

Subtitle: A Memoir

Author: Piper Laurie

Narrator: Piper Laurie

Format: Unabridged

Length: 14 hrs and 40 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-27-16

Publisher: Piper Laurie

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 9 votes

Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios

Publisher's Summary:

The intimate memoir by three-time Oscar nominee Piper Laurie, one of Hollywood's most gifted and respected actresses, read by the author.

At the age of 17, in the glory days of moviemaking, Piper Laurie was living every little girl's dream. A contract star with Universal, Piper was elevated to the heights of Hollywood, her name emblazoned on 1950s marquees across America for hit movies like The Prince Who Was a Thief, The Mississippi Gambler, and Ain't Misbehavin'. Meanwhile, Piper's beauty was admired by the likes of Ronald Reagan, Howard Hughes, Paul Newman, and Tony Curtis as well as dozens of directors and legions of fans.

But Piper discovered early on that the little girl's dream was not her own. Mortified by the shallowness of the roles and movies she was given, she longed for the freedom and fulfillment of her own artistic vision, finally finding the courage to leave her contract behind. After leaving the oppressive studio culture, Piper began to star in the live TV shows, plays, and films that became her career hallmarks: The Glass Menagerie on Broadway, the original Days of Wine and Roses, The Hustler, the iconic Carrie, and Twin Peaks - earning three Oscar nominations and winning Emmy and Golden Globe awards during her impressive career.

This memoir is the inspiring tale of Piper's perseverance to break from tradition and to practice her craft at the highest level. She started life as a withdrawn, mute child who couldn't find her voice and was transformed into a woman who learned to live out loud by her own rules.

Members Reviews:

Amazing woman and life.

Would you consider the audio edition of Learning to Live out Loud to be better than the print version?

I don't know as I have not "read" the printed. I do know there is something wonderful about Ms. Laurie's voice that makes this audiobook a true pleasure to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

I never got bored. All of her life and stories about old Hollywood and the movies, Theatre, and TV she has done are all so fascinating to me. She was a woman ahead of her time!

Which scene was your favorite?

So many of them I loved but I would have to say all the Twin Peeks info was great fun to learn.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laughed a few times. Did not cry but I did feel her pain many times.

Any additional comments?

This is one of, if not the best autobiographies I have ever read. She is so honest about herself and her life that you cannot help but be drawn into her telling of it. There are things many people would have left out but not Ms. Laurie. She lets you see her warts and all. I loved every step of the road she took me on with this book.

An absolute gem - don't miss it

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Ms. Laurie tells her extraordinary life story with enormous gusto. Few would guess, from her public persona, that she has lived one of the most colorful lives in show business.

What did you like best about this story?

A lot of surprises. And Ms.
