Publisher's Summary:
Walter Brennan (1894-1974) was one of the greatest character actors in Hollywood history. He won three Academy Awards and became a national icon starring as Grandpa in The Real McCoys. He appeared in over 200 motion pictures and became the subject of a Norman Rockwell painting, which celebrated the actor's unique role as the voice of the American Western. His life journey from Swampscott, Massachusetts, to Hollywood, to a 12,000-acre cattle ranch in Joseph, Oregon, is one of the great American stories.
In the first biography of this epic figure, Carl Rollyson reveals Brennan's consummate mastery of virtually every kind of role while playing against and often stealing scenes from such stars as Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart, and John Wayne. Rollyson fully explores Brennan's work with Hollywood's greatest directors, such as Howard Hawks, John Ford, and Fritz Lang. As a father and grandfather, Brennan instilled generations of his family with an outlook on the American Dream that remains a sustaining feature of their lives today. His conservative politics, which grew out of his New England upbringing and his devout Catholicism, receive meticulous attention and a balanced assessment in A Real American Character.
Written with the full cooperation of the Brennan family and drawing on material in archives from every region of the United States, this new biography presents an artist and family man who lived and breathed an American idealism that made him the real McCoy.

Not very interesting
Not a good read. To much of the book is devoted to describing the movies which he was in and relatively little of interest about the man himself. But, then, maybe he just was not that interesting of a person. He did know a lot of fellow actors, but he says very little about them as persons.
and for good reason. Also
Walter Brennan was in many films over many years, many B grade, where he had a minor part. The book goes into too much detail on the plot of these movies, which have been long forgotten, and for good reason. Also, there is the usual name dropping at parties and other occasions. It spends too little time on Brennan's personal life and life style. I found the book boring and had to skip through much of it looking for substance. ..MAT Sun City Center FL.
A character actor who was the star.
"The Life of Walter Brennan" is a reasonably well written book covering the career of a man who made his acting reputation from well portrayed character roles. You'll learn interesting details of Brennan's career and his ways of creating memorable characters. This biography made me appreciate Walter Brennan the actor. In many instances his characterizations outshine the star!
Good read.
I liked the book, Brennan was a really good actor and person and family man. Didn' know he was so versatile and could play older men when he was young.
Great Actor from the 30's through end on 60's
Fun book to read, Walter Brennan did so much more than the TV Series 'The Real McCoys'..Check out the 1940 film "The Westerners" where Mr. Brennan plays Judge Roy Bean....I believe he received an Oscar for that movie..
