Wry indeed.
Trent Zelazny's novelette "Found Money" appeals to one for the characters and the way the author handles their dialogue, although their internal monologues are also often entertaining. And as a story in which the characters dance around one another quite a bit, rushing near and then dashing away again until the final crashing climax, there's a lot of this juicy dialogue. Trent has a couple of modes that I've seen so far--I'd say that the first sometimes seeks to answer the question, "How dark can 'emotionally dark' possibly get?" Well, this is the other one-- a much-less-heavy look at not so much the dark side of humanity per se as the stupid side-- a side so stupid that you have to laugh, or at least smirk in satisfaction.
Madcap mayhem from master of noir
Trent Zelazny is known as a noir writer, but Found Money is the sunny side of noir. Bad guys everywhere, good guys with pretty shaky morals and lots of almost-gritty action. Except every time someone wants to really land a punch or even eliminate another bad guy, things just, well, they just don't work out. Sometimes it's stupidity, sometimes it's piss-poor luck.
Zelazny leads these characters on a merry chase, up one side of crazy and down the other side at 90 miles per. Have you ever heard about someone finding a huge amount of money, in some really bizarre location and you think "what moron loses that much money?? If I had that kind of money, I'd hang on to it, fer Christ's sake"? Zelazny gives us a romp of an answer to that question and it's fun to see the usually grim-voiced Zelazny put his considerable talents toward writing humor.
Fabuloso
Review by Ruth Blair...
Loved this. I already read it in The Day the Leash Gave Way and Other Stories, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it the second time over. That's what I've found to be one of the great things about Zelazny's work, you can re-read them and still enjoy them, sometimes even moreso the second time around than the first!
I strongly recommend picking this one up. It doesn't take long to read, and if you enjoy it, then you should definitely pick upThe Day the Leash Gave Way and Other Storiesnext! It's an awesome collection that gives you a vivid glimpse into Zelazny's twisted imagination.
Five stars without a doubt!
A Blast And A Half!
"Found Money" was a real treat, a quick short story for when I'm too busy or distracted for a novel. I read it in one sitting. I like crime/caper/stupid crook stories, so this one was a hit for me. Plus it was funny, something that offsets Zelazny's darker works. He has a nice flair for comedy. Nick was a very likable character. Everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. He was false accused of stealing from the bookstore he worked at and got fired. He sold his watch and the money was stolen. Then he finds a great deal of cash in an envelope on the street. I initially thought he should have just left it there, but that money ended up being very important to him for reasons I won't say.
