Damn good yarn this one mate

What made the experience of listening to Dr. No (with Interview) the most enjoyable?

Hugh Quarshie is fantastic on the accents. His pace is perfect and style easy to listen to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dr. No (with Interview)?

The centipede.

What does Hugh Quarshie bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Could be his background or the ability to make the Jamaican accent so perfect. His interview at the end is very enlightening.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I am not sure if Hugh Quarshie could have done a good show on the previous books but I am quite prepared to listen to any book he narrates. His soft voice is a little hard to decipher with road noise in the car at times. Splendid work on his part.

Fleming Bond books are amazing!

Epic story telling. Working my way through the Bond books and they does disappoint! Can't wait to read more.

Heat and danger in Jamaica

Possibly the best Bond novel, set almost exclusively in the steamy heat of Jamaica, which Fleming conveys brilliantly. Following the mysterious disappearance of the local operatives, Bond is called in to find what happened to them. The story holds its tension throughout, the villain is suitably cold-blooded, and the token beautiful woman has character for once! Hugh Quarshie is a great choice for the narrator with his rich dark voice, transporting you directly to the sun-drenched Caribbean, though his Jamaican characters are so well done that I found them hard to follow.

Bond as it should be read.

Hugh Quarshie has a very soothing voice to listen to.

Better than the last book

Cut out features characters from the last Dave Riley novel and an interesting twist on who the Bad guys are. Although it does suffer slightly from a dated technology level, no one calls them 'portable' phones anymore, the writing and plot are very good. Highly recommended for Dave Riley fans and would make a decent introduction into the series even though it relies on Characters introduced in the previous book. Performance is excellent as I have come to expect from this reader.

Better than a mob story

Dave Reilly becomes a bodyguard going up against the mob. This is one novel where you don't know what to expect next and it was a fun read from cover to cover.

Hallinan is a writer at the very peak of his power

This is the fifth novel in the Poke Rafferty series. Frankly, I didn't think he could top the Queen of Patpong, Wisely, he hasn't tried to do that. Queen was a love story to Rose, in addition to being many other things. Here, Rose and Miaow are exiled, almost to the point of disappearing. What Hallinan does do, however, is brilliant. Poke's half-sister, Ming Li, who had a vivid role in a prior book, is brought forward as a major character in this one. Hallinan writes women so well that, even though we miss Rose and Miaow almost viscerally, Ming Li is so compelling that she almost fills the void. The story is typical Hallinan Bangkok, with Poke running around like a chicken with his head cut off trying to stay alive. The CIA and the Phoenix Program from Viet Nam and the US Embassy and a villainous Major Shen and a horrendously dangerous mass murderer from Viet Nam, an American named Murphy, a flock of old spooks who desperately try to keep their old lifestyle alive: all these and more, much more. Poke's friend Arthit appears in a heart-breaking role, and we find ourselves still mourning the loss of Nui, his dead wife. Once again we get Bangkok in all its lurid splendor. Once again Victor Bevine does a marvelous job of bringing this masterful work of creativity to us lucky Audible listeners. I hope Tim Hallinan has a string of these in his remarkable mind, ready to write, because I could listen to his stuff for just about ever.

Very enjoyable and highly recommended

I admit to being a fan of this series and put down everything else I was reading in order to listen to this book. I was not disappointed. The Fear Artist is a worthy sequel to The Queen of Patpong, one of my all-time favourites. The book opens with an accidental encounter on a street in Bangkok - guns, paint, cameras, and police acting more brutal than usual - and Poke Rafferty somehow ends up on the run. Rose and Miaow are out of town for most of the book and I missed them. This being said, the story is more believable for their absence. This is a problem Poke must solve without his Thai family. Even the stalwart Ardit is sidelined - recovering from the death of his beloved wife, he is not his usual insightful, wry self. Mr.

Would you try another book from Steve Berry and/or L.J. Ganser?

I have read more than ten books from Steve Berry and am a fervent fan of Cotton Malone, and have and will read more of his books if he keeps his moralistic pretentions to himself.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I am a dozen authors I follow closely and what will be read next depends on who produces the next book.

Have you listened to any of L.J. Gansers other performances before? How does this one compare?

L.J Ganser performed well with this audiobook. I am sorry, but did not find him to be extraordinary, but overall did a fine job.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Third Secret?

I think Steve Berry's craftsmanship when writing a book is overall excellent. His stories are creative and entertaining. Do I think he is John Stuart Mill or James Madison? No, but he writes a fast paced, entertaining tale and I do not have specific parts of this book I would eliminate if I had the choice. I do have a significant problem with the morals he is trying to thrust upon others.

I have never written any extended comments on the thousands of books I have read in my life; however, I feel compelled to do so in this case.

Excellent performance but far fetched.

The performance by the reader is close to faultless and helps to make the story deeply intriguing and entertaining.

The story itself however, I personally found a little hard to believe. The key points in the plot seemed quite unlikely scenarios. On the whole though, a very entertaining listen

Detailed espionage, character development shallow

If character development and a story that revolves around the character are important to you (Baldacii, Grey Man Series, Berenson. Eisler to name a few), then skip this. However, if that isnt important to you and a decent espionage story is your cup of tea, give this a try.

Great series!

Ive gone through most of this genre and somehow this had escaped my notice. It was like finding money in your pockets because I love the Scorpion. Right up there with the best of the single actor heroes. Love that I have two more left.

Missing an ingredient

Having read/listened to other Tom Harper books, I thought I knew what sort of adventure Secrets of the Dead might have in store for me. Sadly, it wasn't to be. In the others, there was an air of mystery as to whom the character (not present day) was, and why and how their tale was connected. Secrets of the Dead swung that mystery around the other way, leaving you wondering just how the present day was involved with the well-defined past. The fuzziness of the present day jarred with the crispness of the past. Our present day characters seemed to lurch around, struggling with what would turn out to be a lame adventure story. And the past - well explained, uneventful, and disappointing.

Francis Greenslade has a somewhat monotone voice, which had never bothered me before, even enhancing The Lazarus Vault, but here I felt it added to the general feeling of slowness; of dragging the story around like an ancient ball and chain. It sounded weary, it felt weary, and I'm sorry to say, I just lost interest.

Not your typical spy novel...

As I was reading this novel, the level and quality of the details made me think that Caplan had some 'inside' information. There were details regarding the disabling and shipping of nuclear weapons that rang very true. But, it was when I read the political concerns regarding exposure of lost nuclear weapons, that I was convinced he had some help. Sure enough, when I read the acknowledgments Caplan recognized the contributions made by President Clinton. So, all in all, a good, but very detailed novel. Stick with it, you will learn a lot and look at the daily headlines a little differently....

A little unpolished in places. Heavy on the luxury brand names. A good read.

Bill Clinton's preface is beautifully written. The novel is full of names of places & luxury goods to the point of being distracting. Most of the plot is plausible and enthralling. Designed to be part of a series.

Many aspects of the book have clearly been carefully calculated - to the extent that this "write by the numbers" character becomes distracting. Sex, romance, glitter, high-tech, highly intelligent villains, details of "exotic" locations, massive display of wealth, some violence - all are thrown into the pot.

sleeper - not in a good way

I love to read action and spy novels. However this was soooo slow that it literally put me to sleep. I like to read for an hour before going to sleep, but this book had me falling asleep within minutes of picking it up.

Entertaining

This was a book about a group of domestic terrorist trying to take out our government in one well time attack. The plot unfolds like you would expect and has your stereotypical cast of characters. Even so I found the book to be enjoyable and for $5 (I picked it up on sale) it was well worth the money. I also found the narrator MacLeod Andrews easy to listen to.

So good I listened to it all in less than 2 days

I couldn't stop listening. Usually I listen to my audibooks while falling asleep but this book is far too exciting than to be a "sleep inducer". In fact, when I had things to do around the house, I kept listening. I usually don't do this (so I can focus on either the story or on my work) but I just couldn't stop listening. Loved it! Will definitely look for more books by this author.

Good Story, However...

I enjoyed the book, a good and believable storyline. However, Howard needs to check location facts. Nothing drives me crazier than knowing some facts are wrong ie McLean is in Fairfax Co, not PG Co.and you look at the White House and the Washington Monument from the Hay Adams not the Capitol, this type of screw up bothers me.

great story. at times maybe a little predictable but fun. it also is a fast story. looking for more by Howard Gordon.

Missed the Target

When I read that the author was a writer for Homeland, I purchased this book since I love that series. Was I disappointed! For a mystery it was slow moving, had poorly developed plot and characters and I gave up listening after the first half. I have a feeling it was quickly written for a TV episode and perhaps it might work in an hour time slot, but to listen to it drone on and on, was not entertaining for me. If you like Homeland this is not the same caliber at all.
