Save yourself the time and just go to sleep.
I love espionage books, and I have listened to Dick Hill before, but this was boring and poorly performer. He often dropped the accent mid sentence and the story itself was mundane and grueling to listen to.

In this explosive best seller, the United States and the Soviet Union are poised on the brink of Armageddon. Glasnost has failed, Russia is economically desperate, and Gorbachev's successor has launched the first strike in what may become World War III. Only one man knows the full extent of the impending horror - a CIA operative trapped in the Kremlin.
Written by a former Marine Corps pilot, DEFCON One is a blistering scenario of men and war - exciting, tense, and frighteningly real.
    Members Reviews:
High tech, high suspense, high tension!
Cold war heats up to the brink of Armageddon! Geopolitical intrigue. Small inner circle politburo cabal of Soviet hardliners opposed to glasnost are convinced that the only way to achieve the Communist goal of world domination and return the Soviet Union to its former glory is to destroy the United States in a surprise all out nuclear first strike. The depth of the author's knowledge of the inner workings of the respective governments and the military command structure made the story real enough to be an account of history thst could have been. The realistic dialogue and detailed description of the aerial combat scenes put me back in the cockpit
The narration was first class - literally made me like I was present as a participant. Overall, a great and thrilling read.
    The reader is so bad!
The reader's breathing is so loud it wreaked the book for me. Gave up on chapter 3.
Poor imitation of Red Storm, 2D characters
Would you try another book from Joe Weber and/or Keith Szarabajka?
Not unless I read amazing reviews. This had zero character development despite its length and the "tech" was pathetic when it was not horribly inaccurate. It was a really sad knock-off of Red Storm Rising, without the characters or the realistic battles. If I had not purchased it, I would not have finished it.
What was most disappointing about Joe Webers story?
Everything was literally US vs. Soviet formula, with really bad stereotypes. You never got to know any of the characters or care about what happened to them and the military/battle scenarios were short on details and believability. There is no protagonist, just a lot of shifting scenes from ships to planes to Kremlin to White House. I would only consider another of his books if I could get it from the library for free.
Have you listened to any of Keith Szarabajkas other performances before? How does this one compare?
The reading performance was okay. Not stellar, but he didn't have much to work with, so would not be fair to judge the performance based on this book.
Do you think DEFCON One needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
NO! Weber needs to stay on his day job at the call center.
    Any additional comments?
Audible really needs to get a bigger library. There are a lot of really good books out there on audio, as I have obtained many from our local library system and sometimes purchased disc versions. Got a feeling I'll have exhausted the Audible collection within another few months unless they come up with some better way of indexing that allows a better browsing interface.

    Publisher's Summary:
Former CIA station chief of Azerbaijan Mark Sava has given up the spy game and become a professor in the city of Baku. But when a gunman makes a brazen attempt on his life in the hallowed halls of the national library, Sava suddenly becomes a persona non grata in his adopted home.
The Azeri government gives him only a few hours to leave the country, and the CIA wants him back in the US. But Sava learns that his friend John Decker has been kidnapped - and knows he has no option but to find Decker. He teams up with ex-CIA spy and former girlfriend Daria Buckingham, and the two soon find themselves being chased by Chinese intelligence agents through the underworlds of Turkmenistan and Iran, caught in the middle of a secret conflict over oil that has the US and Iran tumbling headlong into war.
The explosive sequel to The Colonels Mistake, The Leveling brings to life in electrifying detail one of the most dangerous regions of the globe.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent espionage thriller series!
The Leveling is about internal intrigue within Iran concerning the country's nuclear program and the reaction of the US government to it. Ex-CIA agent and current CIA contractor Mark Sava is living and teaching at a university in Baku, Azerbaijan when he is brought into the situation. Sava's friend John Decker has been kidnapped and is being held in Iran. Sava and ex-CIA agent Daria Buckingham leave Turkmenistan to enter Iran and attempt to rescue Decker. Most of the action in the novel occurs in Iran and, to a lesser degree, Turkmenistan.
This is an excellent espionage novel. Christopher Lee's narration is outstanding.
I recommend The Leveling and the 4 book Mark Sava series to those who enjoy espionage thrillers.
    Excellent!
Mayland does a great job of placing you in the culture of his stories. A follow-up to The Colonel's Mistake, I'd recommend reading it first, but this will stand on its own.
    On to Spy For Hire!
    Incomplete
I did not read or listen to the first book in the series; this feels like it might be a continuation of it . And it feels like this book is just a middle book moving you onto the next - the third book. As a stand alone, it isn't very satisfying. The characters aren't all that likable, the action is ok, the torture is over done. It really is a rather dark book. While there was enough to keep me listening, there isn't enough to make me to the next book in the series.

    Publisher: Ian Fleming Publications Ltd
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
When sudden emergencies arise, James Bond is there to meet them. Whether dealing with the assassination of a Cuban thug in America, the destruction of an international heroin ring or a mysterious death in the Seychelles, 007 gets the job done in his own unmistakable style.
Contains the short stories: From a View to a Kill; For Your Eyes Only; Quantum of Solace; Risico and The Hildebrand Rarity.
Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Samuel West.
Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica. Since then James Bond has gone on to become a global phenomenon.
Samuel Wests theatre work includes ENRON, Hamlet for the RSC and starring opposite his father Timothy, in A Number. TV credits include Cambridge Spies, Any Human Heart, Eternal Law and Mr Selfridge, and he has narrated many TV documentaries. Among his films are Hyde Park on Hudson, Van Helsing, Iris, Persuasion and Howards End. He has also directed ten plays and two operas.
    Critic Reviews:
"The girlsare as wild and luscious as ever." (The Times)
"Urbane savagery and mighty smooth tale-spinning." (New York Herald Tribune)
"The Bond ambience is persuasive." (Times Literary Supplement)
"Five separate long, strong drinks, all different in flavor and effectthe familiar and ever-welcome touches are not lost." (The Sunday Times)
"The most forceful and driving writer." (Raymond Chandler)
    Members Reviews:
    Surprising nice neat stories
For film buffs, the only similarities are the titles. These stories, usually an hour long are nice short reads. As you already know Bond and the support characters there is no need to go back and give us their stories and so the narrative moves along nicely. I found the way Ian Fleming told the story of 'Quantum of Solace' was beautifully done. Samuel West is excellent narrating these stories and didn't skip a beat with any of the characters even the womens voices. I found 'A View to a Kill' a little tripe but the other stories enthralling. Now I am ready to move onto 'Thunderball'.
    Another Great Listen
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, Read on and you will know why I love this book.
What did you like best about this story?
Having listened to the previous James Bond stories, I have come to look at Bond in a very different way than the persona portrayed on film. He is not the brash arrogant larger than life character the films put over, even the more recent films try and play this down but not completely. Bond is a man with, as West puts it, a job I would not want to do. The stories in this series though exciting as you would expect, not Quantum this is another level altogether, give a much deeper view of Bond and who he is.

    Publisher's Summary:

Three months later she is shocked when a friend in the British government says Nick was spotted in Moscow and is now notonly a suspect in his boss' murder but also potentially involved in illicit Russian oil deals. With her every move now closely watched, Sophie moves to Washington, DC, to be with family and friends.
There Sophie is drawn deeper into Nick's shadowy world. While photographing an exhibit of two never-before-seen Fabergé imperial eggs at the National Gallery of Art, Sophie is confronted by a Russian oil tycoon, implicating her former husband. On the run from Nick's enemies, Sophie plays a high-stakes game of Russian roulette as she tries to determine friend from foe and prove her husband's innocence.
Weaving together political intrigue, art history, and espionage, this fast-paced story marks the start of a promising new series.
    Members Reviews:
Flawed plot, and I don't enjoy the narrator
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Sophie keeps making bad decisions in my opinion. Why wouldn't she report when her apartment is ransacked?? There are leaps of faith and streaks of naiveté. I wasn't buying the whole pretense.
If youve listened to books by Ellen Crosby before, how does this one compare?
    NA
What didnt you like about Caroline Shaffers performance?
I thought the attempt at accents was pretty bad. Why did the DC photographer sound like he was from the Bronx? The Boston accent was hardly "Harvard Yard", more Revere! I was continuously put off by the voices and accents.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No

    Worst. Narration. Ever.
An engaging storyline is the only thing that kept me listening to an overly nasal dialogue, with little to no difference between male and female vocalization. Perhaps I've been spoiled by Barry Eisler...

"Sexily brooding Allon... must be the most famous superspy not played by Daniel Craig." (Daily Telegraph)

    Members Reviews:
Silva is always solid and does well to focus on plot and build up
I enjoy Silvas Allon series very much, you know what youre getting and there is a clear formula he follows with each book. Its not going to wow you with literary gymnastic (but that is not the intention), instead it is deserving of best seller status through its methodical, well researched and energetic story lines. The narrator was enjoyable, nice tone to his voice but all his accents sounded the same to me regardless of if they were Russian, Corsican or Israeli.
A Masterpiece by Silva one of the best books ever
Here's a brilliant story told expertly with characters; read about b4 in other works Exquisitely. It could go on for more chapters.
Silva brings the pages off the book into you're very soul. Don't miss this one EVER!
    Gabriel strikes again
I love the Gabriel Allen books and have read many of them including this one. It was also great to have it as an audio book and enjoy it all over again brought to life with voices to add to my perspective of the people
    It's great and very enjoyable
    Gripping story
Truly gripping story with the panache to carry off the truly incredible. Not the first I have read of this series and certainly not the last. A touch of class!

    Title: Skinner
    Author: Charlie Huston
    Narrator: Jay Snyder
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-09-13
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 45 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Known by the name of the psychological experiment that fostered his emotionless brutality, Skinner founded his career in "asset protection" on fear. To touch anyone under Skinner's protection was to invite destruction. A savagely effective methodology, until Skinner's CIA handlers began to fear him as much as his enemies did and banished him to the hinterlands of the intelligence community.
Now, a cyber-terrorist attack on the US power grid is about to end that long exile. His asset is Jae, a roboticist with a gift for seeing the underlying systems violently shaping a new era of global guerrilla warfare.
At the root of is all is a young boy, the innocent seed of a plot grown in the slums of Mumbai. Brought to flower, that plot will tip the balance of world power in a perilous new direction.
A combination of Le Carre spycraft with Stephenson techno-philosophy from the novelist hailed by the Washington Post as "the voice of twenty-first century crime fiction," Skinner is Charlie Huston's masterpiece - a new kind of thriller for a new kind of world.
    Members Reviews:
    Off beat psychological spy thriller
Huston's Skinner is an intriguing variation on the espionage thriller genre. The title character is so named because of have spent his early years as an experimental subject by his parents, in a box isolated from the rest of society (in the psych field, this is called a skinner box). Skinner is basically a highly intelligent, high functioning autistic sociopath who specializes in "asset protection" or basically a personal bodyguard for someone that is the target of others. In this case, Skinner protects a woman renowned for her "supercomputer-like" brain that can discern patterns and piece together the big picture particularly useful in intelligence / spy fields. The duo is on the trail of an apparent cyber attack on the US electrical grid that has led to several deaths.
The sci-fi elements are minimal with some loosely relevant small robots and nondescript computers and software. The timeframe is current. The story concerns the detective work piecing together all the disparate connections which leads to a totally unexpected plot twist at the end. The appeal of the tale is the interaction between the two main, but mostly asocial characters. The story is related in a nonstop series of staccato bursts both in terms of actions and dialogue that offers a glimpse into the minds of these two fascinating persons.
The narration is outstanding and mirrors the tenor of the author's intentions with a unique perspective into the thought processes of the individuals.
First audible book I have truly despised
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Better narrator, less monotone, creepy cyborg killer voice
Would you ever listen to anything by Charlie Huston again?
I love Charlie Huston's work. This story was awful, however.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jay Snyder?
Any other human on the face of the earth (or Mars)
    Any additional comments?
    I want a refund.
