Bruno Salvador has worked on clandestine missions before. A highly skilled interpreter, he is not a stranger to the Official Secrets Act. But this is the first time he has been asked to change his identity and, worse still, his clothes in service of his country.
Whisked to a remote island to interpret a top-secret conference between no-name financiers and Congolese warlords, Salvos excitement is only heightened by memories of the night before he left London, and his life-changing encounter with a beautiful nurse named Hannah.
Exit suddenly, the unassuming, happily married man Salvo believed himself to be. Enter in his place, the pseudonymous Brian Sinclar: spy, lover and perhaps, even, hero.
    Critic Reviews:
"An incendiary tale ... le Carré's understanding of how the world ticks is, as always, machete sharp." (USA Today)
"Le Carré's insight into the dense, dangerous nexus of corporate and government interests is chillingly assured." (The New York Times Book Review)
"To categorise le Carré, as many do, as a 'spy' novelist is to do him a disservice; he uses the world of cloak-and-dagger much as Conrad used the sea to explore the dark places in human nature." (Washington Post Book World)

    The Mission Song
Carre intuitively details character and circumstance to write a beautifully human story. It is wonderfuly read by David Oyelowa whose narration is sensitive and energetic. I'll look out for other titles he's read.
    Hard work but rewarding
This le Carre book is magnificently narrated which helps makes sense of the different players of all nationalities and persuasions. There's a lot to keep up with but it is a well crafted tale which leaves you feeling that it is all too true.
    Hard work and Slow
The book didnt really take off, you keep expecting the next chapter to start getting better-but no.
Not one of Le Carres best.
    Well worth the price
What did you like most about The Mission Song?
This is a beautifully written story which is both compelling and authentic. The combination of Le Carre's writing with David Oyelowo's narration is something that I would like to experience again.
What does David Oyelowo bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
The rich variety of accents and intonation bring the story alive. He is right on the money with his narration.
    The Mission Song
    Perfectly written, perfectly read.
I took much longer to finish than expected, because I kept going over parts because of the beauty of the writing.
Salvo's realistically delineated character emerges naturally from his background , and the plot is exquisitely crafted.

He makes the story more interesting, love the voices that he does, and just his normal reading voice.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book made me laugh outloud, but I believe it was combination of the reading and the writing.
    Excellent Series!
I love Amber and Hawk's story. Aside from a very romantic affair, the story is filled with details that bring laughter, anger, satisfaction and entertainment. You won't want to miss this one.
    Hot Stuff
Would you consider the audio edition of Hunter to be better than the print version?
The audio enhanced the pleasure of reading the book
What other book might you compare Hunter to and why?
it is a continuation of her excellent cross fire series
Which character as performed by Kevin Foley was your favorite?
I absolutely loved listening to Kevin foley seductive performance of Hawk. I also enjoyed his voice for Lily.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
As it was so action packed and exciting to listen to it was easier to listen to it a couple of chapters at a time.
    Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed the exciting story as I fell in love with Hawk straight away and Amber was a very fitting heroine. With Kevin Foley's seductive and sensual voice made Gennita Low's marvellous story so easy to listen to.
    Supercharged
Talk about a supercharged story, just wow. For most of the story, my heart was beating so fast logged up in my throat. This is Hawk and Amber's book, they meet, sparks fly from the get go. Loved the way the story unfolded, the author throwing in some twists when least expected. A world of intrigue, suspense, tragedy peppered with some hot sexy scenes, some comical bantering makes this an awesome read. I highly recommend it. I loved it when I read it, but listening to it narrated by Kevin Foley ... WOW ... his voice is amazing, flexible and versatile. With so many characters, genders, nationalities, I didn't have to figure out who's talking, Mr. Foley did a great job. Thank you for hours of enjoyment.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jake Adams finds himself in a Tunisian prison, being held for murdering an international terrorist who happens to be well connected in that country. When a mysterious man suddenly shows up to offer him a get-out-of-jail-free card, Jake is a bit suspicious. But what choice does he have? To secure his release all he has to do is one favor for a wealthy Texas senator - find his sister who is missing somewhere in Europe. No problem. When Jake picks up a tail almost immediately after leaving Tunisia, he quickly discovers that this case might not be as easy as it seems. The case takes Jake across Italy, from Rome to the catacombs of Sicily, and finally to a harrowing rescue that could get him killed.
    Members Reviews:
    ~~Action, adventure and a mystery~~
Jake takes a romp through Europe with his usual "skill" sets. He is hired to find a missing professor, Sara Jones. She is the sister of a US Senator from Texas. And, her father is one of those wealthy Texans!
Antiquities of old are the items that a Greek tycoon (Petros Caras) desires. He is also known for his wealth and love of Slavic women. And, he is well known to the Central Intelligence Agency.
This novel is full of action, adventure, mayhem and a mystery to solve. The scene in the Cessna plane with Elisa piloting is priceless and the lady Svelta Kallina also plays a starring role. Some humor by the SEAL team creates a break for the reader at a critical time.
I must admit that I recently read "Rising Tiger" and went back to see what other stories this author had written with Jake Adams in this role. And, now will have to go back again and read some of the earlier ones.
    Highly recommended.
A bit like Indy Jones and James Bond
I have to admit, I like these kind of stories. It seems there is a new direction after a few pages, so you keep reading to see what is going to happen next. Thankfully there are points where you feel safe putting the book down for the night or taking a break. I gave it 4 stars only because some events are a little on the edge of disbelief, but it really doesn't kill the feel of the story. The other reason is that many books seem to focus on how bad governments are and some of the people in them.. This one brushes on those topics; the other reason for 4 stars.. read it and see if I am right.
    Another great action/adventure!
The eighth installment of the Jake Adams chronicles is a strong one. Jake is asked to locate a missing college professor, and at the same time figure out why a Greek billionaire is after her. His detective work takes him to Sicily, mainland Italy, and Malta, via boat, plane, and the occasional stolen car. He's paired up with a beautiful Italian intelligence agent, and Jake being Jake, they are soon rattling the sheets together, LOL. Good story, and it's well-written, fast-paced, with action and intrigue around every corner...all that we've come to expect from this series.
I was mildly disappointed in #7 (Without Options), but this one rebounds nicely. There were some continuity issues conflicting with Without Options, but they weren't major enough to disrupt the story. And I chose to ignore the author being directionally challenged in the early going...leaving Tunis one would not look south to see Sicily's rocky coast, nor would one sail west from Santorini to get to Israel.

    Thin plot and implausible scenarios
Is there anything you would change about this book?
You would expect substantially more technical accuracy from someone with her background knowledge.
Would you recommend The Geneva Trap to your friends? Why or why not?
It filled in a long journey across France!
What does Julia Barrie bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
I think this needed a make narrator.
Was The Geneva Trap worth the listening time?
    Generally no.
    A gripping read
A very believable book which kept me intrigued up to the end. It is my first Stella Rimmigton & I look forward to hearing more by her
    Not for me
Struggled to finish and returned. everything about this book was well below par. Don't buy
    Excellent espionage.
Very enjoyable especially as it was written from someone who was truly in the know
    A tolerable read
This is my first book by Stella Rimington, and it didn't really live up to my expectations. I quite liked the main characters, but the action and the plot were rather mundane. Idon't think that I would bother to buy another by this author.

    Publisher's Summary:
The dead hand of a long-defeated Nazi Third Reich reaches out to Portugal, London and Marrakech in Deighton's second novel, featuring the same anonymous narrator and milieu of The Ipcress File, but finds Dawlish now head of the secret British Intelligence unit, WOOC(P).
The Ipcress File was a debut sensation. Here in the second Secret File, Horse under Water, skin-diving, drug trafficking and blackmail all feature in a curious story in which the dead hand of a long-defeated Hitler-Germany reaches out to Portugal, London and Marrakech, and to all the neo-Nazis of today's Europe.
The detail is frightening but unfaultable; the story as up to date as ever it was. The un-named hero of The Ipcress File the same: Insolent, fallible, capricious - in other words, human. But he must draw on all his abilities, good and bad, when plunged into a story of murder, betrayal and greed every bit as murky as the waters off the coast of Portugal, where the answers lie buried.
    Critic Reviews:

(Sunday Times)"Deighton is so far in the front of other writers in the field that they are not even in sight" (Sunday Times)"Nobody now seriously doubts that Deighton is the most credible of all the spysmiths" (The Scotsman)"I want to raise a cheer to Mr Len Deighton whose unnamed hero in his second brilliant thriller is all too like the rest of us except that he works for MI5" (Financial Times)"Mr Deighton is really something special" (Sunday Times)
    Members Reviews:
Second of the Harry Palmer Novels
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There is probably a practical reason for Horse Under Water not being filmed, but it may be that the convoluted plot and lack of a clear-cut Cold War stand-off are explanations. The novel also ends with a number of appendices, suggesting that the novel doesnt accommodate the historical context, dating back to the 1940s, and the aftermath of the plots resolution particularly well.
If youve listened to books by Len Deighton before, how does this one compare?
One reason why Len Deightons 1960s spy-novels read so much better than his 1980s Berlin Game and its sequels, featuring Bernard Samson and his family and colleagues, is the character of the first-person narrator-hero. Whereas Deightons later novels rely on the motifs, plots and standard characters of the genre, Horse Under Water, The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain have Harry Palmer, as the first-person narrator is retrospectively called after the film versions came along. John Le Carré found a different and equally successful narrative solution to Deighton. He, too, encompasses the varied angles and multiple deceptions that make up a spy novel, without making any character and certainly not the reader all-knowing.

Len Deighton's classic first novel, whose protagonist is a nameless spy - later christened Harry Palmer and made famous worldwide in the iconic 1960s film starring Michael Caine. The Ipcress File was not only Len Deighton's first novel, it was his first best seller and the story that broke the mould of thriller writing.
For the working class narrator, an apparently straightforward mission to find a missing biochemist becomes a journey to the heart of a dark and deadly conspiracy. The film of The Ipcress File gave Michael Caine one of his first and still most celebrated starring roles, while the novel itself has become a classic.
    Critic Reviews:

    Members Reviews:
    A great classic
This is not a book for listening to when you're going to sleep as you have to pay attention to the detail of this complex plot, but it is a rewarding listen. There is far more to this story than was included in the film. For anyone who remembers the 60's it takes you back to the atmosphere of the time, both in terms of lifestyle and the ever present cold war paranoia. It is very well read by James Lailey who, I'm pleased to say, doesn't attempt to imitate Michael Caine, but does give the hero the right working class voice - essential in a story which is as much about the overturning of the upper class establishment as it is about the world of spies and spying.
    Superb!
What did you like most about The Ipcress File?
    Cracking story well read.
What other book might you compare The Ipcress File to, and why?
Similar to the best of John le Carre. Same subtlety, good writing and non-heroic hero.
What does James Lailey bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
His reading did make me smile with its hint of Michael Caine who played the main character in the film.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It's not really that kind of book.
    Any additional comments?
I've read this book before and seen the film and I never tire of it. I shall give it a few years and listen again.
    Brilliant narrated classic
Would you listen to The Ipcress File again? Why?
A very stylish, very well written Cold War thriller. It's so well narrated that I would certainly listen again
What did you like best about this story?
I really love the way conversation is written.

Well, the narrator was very good. But the story was just ridiculous. The villain was a cartoon character who in no world could ever succeed, and had less of a clue than Dr Evil from Austin Powers.

    Surprisingly good espionage thriller!
During the last 18 months I have purchased over 200 novels in both the Kindle ebook format and the Audible audiobook format from Amazon using the Whispersync for Voice option. In every case the purchase price for both formats combined was less than the cost of an Audible credit (which is $10.56 in the Platinum Annual plan to which I subscribe). Indeed, more than half of the books cost $4 for both formats combined and none cost more than $7. Spy for Hire cost less than $7 which is slightly less than the $7.34 price for the Audible book alone.
Many of the books I purchased using Whidpersync for Voice are solid 5 star mystery/thrillers. Spy for Hire, the third book in the Mark Sava series, does not quite reach 5 stars but it is still an excellent and very worthwhile espionage thriller. Mark Sava is an ex-CIA agent who now subcontracts for the agency. He lives in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. This suspense/thriller is set in the countries around the Caspian Sea and in the Middle East. It involves the kidnapping of the 2 year old heir to the throne of Bahrain. Action and suspense are near constant. Christopher Lane's narration is superb!
