Leadership is Best Viewed as a Partnership...
Although this is a business book it is written in the style of a Novel and the author has done a fantastic job with it. She articulates the key points and learnings while also keeping the reader interested in how Alan (the main character) will progress in his quest to become a better leader.
What particularly resonated with me was the emphasis on Relationships as the catalyst to building Employee Engagement and create a Better Place to Work. Alan (through ongoing interactions with others) realizes he must connect with the people he is working with and recognize their individual and unique skills, ideas and needs. He works out that leadership needs ongoing attention and is best done as a partnership with those being led.
This is a great little read that can be completed in under 90 minutesâso itâs perfect for a flight, evening read before bed or spread over a couple of lunch breaks.
    Great New Book Release!!
I picked up this book on a whim. It was on the "TopÂHot New Release" list. It's a quick read with lots of great skills every leader and sales person should utilize. The story is entertaining and relatable. The questions and exercises at the end of the chapter drive home the message and encourage you create a plan to have a greater impact on those around you. I highly recommend this for anyone in sales, HR, leadership, or any entrepreneur looking to impact their customers & prospects.
    I like the book
I like the book, eavesdropping always holds my attention. I can be free to hear the solution and then apply it to my own situations.
As an employer of many, leadership is far more than a checklist, it's a number of personal characteristics that you may possess but may need to be brought to the surface and Laurie-Ann gets that point across.
    Simple Yet Profound
Laurie-Ann gives us another simple yet profound story of leadership development. The lessons will resonate with all those who lead or who aspire to lead their organizations into the future. I really appreciate books that help me hone my leadership skills; Rethink Your Leadership is one of those books. I look forward to sharing it with my team.
Laurie-Ann's parable is an easy read, and a good lesson/reminder on leadership
Laurie-Ann's parable is an easy read, and a good lesson/reminder on leadership. The story is woven in such a way that it's like you are at a nearby table, watching the characters as they discuss the issues over the coffee or meal they are sharing.

    Members Reviews:
    Very predictable and poorly written.
The whole story is very predictable and is written in a very amateur style. Everything in the book is marketing 101, business 101, sales 101 and maybe that is giving it to much credit. It may be more high school level. I would not recommend this one.
Get a Grip is a much better choice for a business fictions book with very practical applications.

    Tour de force for techies
I found the book to be engaging, funny, and a fun, fast read about everything in the "Global Silicon Valley". I'm recommending this to all of my friends who are in startups, venture capital, and doing work related to innovation!
    A must have for entrepreneurs!
This book is exactly what an entrepreneur needs! An incredibly fun and highly informative guide to some of the most interesting and entrepreneurial cities in the world.
Everything you need to know about Silicon Valley.
Everything you need to know about how Silicon valley operates. Great resource for anyone starting a company, will save the entrepreneur time and effort. For everyone else a fast interesting read.
    Four Stars
    Interesting
    Disappointing, Lacks Substance
Pretty disappointing. I was expecting that this book would have insightful commentary about the tech industry, industry trends, some good Silicon Valley insider stories, etc. but overall the book really lacked substance. The vast majority of the book consists of about 50 short chapters on 50 cities around the world, that briefly describe the tech scene in those cities and provides lists of angel investors, VCs/accelerators, places to eat, drink local beer, meet people of the opposite sex, local events, top funding rounds in those cities, etc.

  • Teach to Work Audiobook by Patty Alper

    Title: Teach to Work
Subtitle: How a Mentor, a Mentee, and a Project Can Close the Skills Gap in America
    Author: Patty Alper
    Narrator: Karen Saltus
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-17-17
    Publisher: Bibliomotion, Inc.
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
The United States is abundantly rich in adults with know-how. By connecting mentors - educated adults with expertise and knowledge - with mentees - teens and young adults who lack motivation, experience, and role models in their lives - we can begin to close this gap dramatically. We can prepare the next generation for the jobs of tomorrow by adding real-world, project-based experience to their education.
Teach to Work is a call to action for mentors currently sitting on the sidelines. Whether you are a banker, a lawyer, an architect, an accountant, an engineer, an IT specialist, or an artist, you have the experience and skillset to become an ambassador of talent, grit, and transferable skills. The book provides a step-by-step guide to help professionals share their knowledge with the next generation of workers through this intergenerational experience.
Based on Alper's 15 years of mentoring inner-city high-school students, Teach to Work proves how corporations, professionals, and boomers can have a significant impact on the professional future of America's youth. Drawing from real-life stories and letters received from students, teachers, and fellow mentors describing pride of accomplishment, Alper helps professionals embark on this journey to transform lives, mentoring one student at a time.
    Members Reviews:
You, too, can impact our youth in ways you never thought possible. And this book will guide you through every step of the way.
This is an outstanding book that will both inspire you, and provide a step-by-step guide for you to inspire others through mentorship. Patty Alper first makes the convincing argument that project based mentorship is the best way to bridge the growing gap between what corporations are seeking and what students are learning in classrooms. She then walks you through every aspect of being a mentor, from building or joining a corporate mentorship program, to preparing for classes, to leading our youth to follow their own corporate and entrepreneurial ambitions. Teach to Work is filled with real-life mentor stories, mentee quotes and interviews, and accounts from corporations that have successfully implemented project based mentorship programs. Not to be missed is the included glossary of mentorship entities across the country that are actively seeking corporations and skilled professionals.
As Alper proclaims, by sharing some of yourself as a mentor, you will change lives, one student at a time. And you will probably even change your own.
The Magic of Mentors: 'I did this. Here's how'
Patty Alper has two important insights to share: first, mentors give young people something that parents and teachers don't always impart, a simple message of "I did this and you probably can too;" second, mentors can move past initial inspiration and focus on ""Here's how." Her book builds on years of encounters with young minds, and miles of lessons learned. A number of her students were listless and discouraged-- until the experience of conceiving and managing an enterprise illuminated a new direction for them. Alper, informed by years in real estate, marketing and strategy development, argues that intelligent mentoring can fill a troubling gap between education and working life. Hopefully, there are many potential mentors who will choose to fill this gap.

    Title: You Can't Order Change
Subtitle: Lessons from Jim McNerney's Turnaround at Boeing
    Author: Peter S. Cohan
    Narrator: Sean Pratt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-09-17
    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
The first audiobook to explore the unique leadership style of Boeing's acclaimed CEO.
Jim McNerney was one of Jack Welch's top protégés at General Electric and a finalist to replace the retiring Welch as CEO. McNerney lost that competition in 2001, but since then he has emerged as one of the most effective leaders of his generation.
You Can't Order Change tells the amazing story of McNerney's turnaround at the world's leading aircraft manufacturer, which had faced a series of tough problems. Boeing is extremely hard to run, with more than $66 billion in annual revenue and 161,000 employees. A new product like the 787 Dreamliner costs billions to develop over many years, with global production hurdles and little margin for error.
Peter Cohan interviewed people who worked with McNerney throughout his career to explain why his consensus-driven style sets him apart. The title comes from a McNerney quote about the importance of winning hearts and minds with a clear vision of future success.
McNerney combines Midwestern integrity and humility with the brilliance and drive of a Harvard Business School and McKinsey alum. This audiobook reveals his approach to accountability, growth, cost cutting, leadership development, customer focus, and other universal challenges.

    Title: The People Equation
Subtitle: Why Innovation Is People, Not Products
Author: Deborah Perry Piscione, David Crawley PhD
    Narrator: Jeff Hoyt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-02-17
    Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
For too long, companies and their leadership teams focused primarily on their products or services. Leaders are deeply dialed into the minutiae of their companies' operations. But veteran Silicon Valley consultant Deborah Perry Piscione says investments in new technologies or operations do not create innovations - people do. For innovation to happen organizations need to be people-centric. In this breakthrough book she shows how, by following her People Equation, every organization can develop a mindset, an organizational structure, and a product development process that will maximize creativity and innovation.
Using examples from her own consulting work and from her deep research into successful business practices, Piscione shows how to create a culture where risk-taking is rewarded, mavericks are encouraged, collaboration between highly competent people is nurtured, and, when experiments and new initiatives are proposed, the response is to ask "how" rather than question why. This requires upending the usual organizational pyramid, giving more decision-making power to front-line workers and less to the C-level executives traditionally at the top. Once this is all in place you can take advantage of Piscione 12-stop Improvisational Innovation process for bringing new products and services to market. This is a comprehensive guide to harnessing the creative energy in every organization.
    Members Reviews:
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED, SO WHY HASNâT MANAGEMENT?
In my opinion, this is an absolute must-read for business leaders. What this book does best is bring several critically important issues together, addressing the issues such as:
    - creating psychological safety at work
    - building better skills and systems for risk-taking (which is sorely lacking these days)
    - re-learning how to communicate and collaborate (and yes, email and text are lousy substitutes)
    - avoiding "group think" and embracing the quirky
    - harvesting the genius in every worker
    - finding inspiration from the passions and dreams of your employees
One of the few business books that is truly worth the time to read!

    Members Reviews:
Not bad. The flow is choppy.
I think the principles and ideas are great and helpful. the concepts could be more clearly presented in the stories without the expansion after. I think it more like a series of papers than a book.
