A good story
I enjoyed reading this book with my daughter. I think she enjoyed it more than me, and I think she'll read it for herself in a year or two's time.
It's a well written story with well described characters- the children, the parents, the grand-parents. Splitting the action between London and Italy works well as the story moves forward. The young girl Sylvie is an engaging character.
The story is really about wanting something unattainable. The puppy Star turns out to be too much of a handful. The chapter at the end where Sylvie lets him go and join the wolf-pack is very well written.
This is a good book, with credible and sympathetic characters and an interesting premise. I'd have liked it to be a bit faster paced, and rather fewer adjectives at times. My daughter however enjoyed it, and liked this context and found it helped her understand the story better. She found some of the night scenes quite scary.
This book is a good children's story and I think most girls between 6 and 12 would enjoy it. For independent readers it's probably for ages 8 to 12.
