For Charlie Hillier, a posting to Cuba could be the perfect place to start his new life - if he survives it.
With his career stalled and the office abuzz about his soon-to-be-ex-wife's indiscretions, Ottawa bureaucrat Charlie Hillier is desperate for a change. So when the chance at a posting to the Canadian embassy in Havana comes up, he jumps at it, grateful to get as far away as he can from his ex and his dead-end job at Foreign Affairs headquarters.
At first, exotic Havana seems just the place to bury his past and start anew, but he didn't count on finding a couple of kilos of cocaine under his bedroom floor, the kidnapping of a fellow diplomat, or the unsettling connection he uncovers between the former occupant of his house and a Colombian drug-runner. Before long, Charlie's only concern is whether he'll survive his posting at all.
    Critic Reviews:
"A highly entertaining, fast-paced mystery." (Publishers Weekly)
"A bit of romance, a bit of gentle humor, several bits of official corruption and drug-related violence, and a chance for the mild-mannered hero to rise to an impossible challenge." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Havoc in Havana!
Ooh this touched more than one nerve â as well as a funny bone. Having had some experience of working in foreign embassies abroad, there was a lot here that was so true, it brought back many laugh out loud moments as well as others which had me covering my eyes and holding my breath. Iâm happy to say that there is a lot more slapstick and funny events in the book compared to real life â a LOT more â but the events and situations of his every day are familiar in spirit.
Charlie moves from Ottawa to Havana â two of my favourite places on earth and he expects Havana to be a rest! Well itâs certainly hotter than Ottawa and a lot more dangerous than Charlie realises. This is a light hearted look at events â I mean politically there is a light dusting of real history to the proceedings but the humour and watching a Canadian in Cuba is the real gem of the book.
The Canadian sense of humour, the Canadian spirit mixed with the Havana heat and twists and turns of both the political landscape as well as the streets made me want to stick a flag in it and declare it as a one to revisit.
Two cultures, two locations and a lot of diplomatic threads weaving it all together!
This is the start of a new series of adventures and I canât wait to read more.
Visit thebooktrail.com for even more of a trail to the story
A fun new series with this installment set in Cuba
Escape to Havana was such a fun read! I love the main character, Charlie Hillier, and think he makes a great addition to my list of favorite mystery protagonists. Having just recently read another mystery set in Cuba, Ghosts of Havana, I frequently found myself comparing the two mysteries, and Escape to Havana was the clear winner. Nick Wilshire does a wonderful job of portraying the personality and culture of Cuba today â the dilapidated buildings, the wonderful food, the anti-Americanism, the ancient cars, and what it is like to live there as an expat. Canadian himself, Wilshire chose to make Charlie Canadian too which allowed Charlie access to Cuba through the Canadian Embassy, something an American could not have done.

  • A Little White Death Audiobook by John Lawton

    Title: A Little White Death
    Subtitle: An Inspector Troy Novel
    Author: John Lawton
    Narrator: Sara Coward
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-09-18
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
England in 1963 is a country set to explode. The old guard, shocked by the habits of the war-baby youth - sex, drugs, and rock and roll - sets out to fight back. The battle moves uncomfortably close to Chief Inspector Troy.
While Troy is on medical leave for a nasty case of tuberculosis, the Yard brings charges against an acquaintance of his, a hedonistic doctor with a penchant for voyeurism and uninhibited young women. Two of these women just happen to be sleeping with a senior man at the foreign office and a KGB agent. But on the eve of the verdict, a curious double case of suicide drags Troy back into active duty.
Beyond bedroom acrobatics, the secret affairs now stretch to double-crosses and backroom deals in the halls of Parliament, not to mention murder. It's all Troy can do, fighting off some bad habits of his own, to stay afloat in a country immersed in drugs and up to its neck in scandal.

Rich in Detail, Ponderous to Read
Like other Lawton novels, this one is rich in detail, interior monologue and post-war British history. But it flowed like a shallow river in summer: slowly. However, Lawton is a professional and thus, his characters are very well drawn and his England setting is very ably described. Protagonist Freddy Troy, Scotland Yard's top detective, is a memorable character. The book is a continuation of Lawton's Troy series which now brings our hero up to the early 1960s and the racy British sex scandals of that period. I found it all very interesting, but not quite compelling. At some point it became a struggle to keep reading -- it's a long book -- and I grew impatient to finish it. But finish it I did and I will probably read the rest of Lawton's books for his characterizations and his descriptions of England. I just hope they move a little faster than this one did.
    A Little White Death
I stumbled onto John Lawton's books when I was drawn to the cover of his newest, A Lily of the Field. Since that time I have enhaled all of his Inspector Troy series. Sadly, A Little White Death is the last until he produces a new one. I love the blend of history and fiction. The series ranges from the 1930's into the second world war and beyond. Mainly set in England; Russia, Vienna and Paris are also visited. Troy deals with international spies and plots that cross borders and time. The use of the British vernacular is sometimes difficult to fathon, but adds authenticity. Lawton has a great range in vocabulary. I love his books and hope he writes another in the series.
    another great Lawton novel
As I've said before, for his other novels, if you like the period (WW II and thereabouts), and a slightly off-kilter detective, you'll have to love these books. Literate, great characters, great plots. I am actually sad that I have read them all now. Hope to see more in the future.
    Troy is back
This can be read as a stand alone novel, or part of the sequence of novels about this police detective who manages to stumble his way into every important political and historical event in Britain from the 1930s to the 1960s. It is well written, a bit dark, fast and complex.
    Originally a trilogy?
I read recently that the Inspector Troy series was originally intended to be a trilogy.

What will happen to Jason now?
This is another really good addition to the Jason King series. Jason, Slater and Esla have been taken into custody following their discovery of kidnapped healthcare workers who were being forced to fight to the death in underground caves in Russia. The financing came from very bored, very wealthy men who found this entertaining and had set up broadcasting to those who could afford the price.
After the ship the three are being held prisoner on is attacked by Russians King, Slater and Esla escape. They go to an acquaintance of Slater's in Dubai who owes his his life. But is this man really a friend? He seems too willing to make all of his resources available to them. Could he be this altruistic?
What follows is a globe trotting and escalating battle that leaves many dead and Jason's whole future in question.
This is an adrenaline rush book. Nothing heavy , more fun and exciting and very fast paced.
Roger Wayne does an excellent job narrating.
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

    Publisher's Summary:
The stunning third novel from multiaward-nominated author Adam Brookes is paranoid, tense and spy fiction at its very finest.
In many ways, Pearl Tao was a typical American child. She spent summer days at the pool, played softball and lingered at suburban barbecues in her home city of Washington, DC. Yet she is also an academic prodigy, with a university place sponsored by a secretive advanced technology corporation.
Only now, aged 19, has she begun to understand the terrifying truth of what her role is to be. What her parents intend her to become. Pearl's only hope of escape lies with two British spies: one, Trish Patterson, sidelined in disgrace; the other, former journalist Philip Mangan, gone rogue and following a trail of corruption. Helping Pearl might be the most important and dangerous thing either will ever do.
    Editorial Reviews:
"Authentic, taut and compelling. Brookes is the real deal." (Charles Cumming)

This was an excellent third book in a truly gripping series of spy novels. I found it hard to stop listening whenever I started. Cannot wait for the next one...
Best book of the three so far.
Really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next. Now that I know the characters well from the previous two books I found that I could concentrate more on the story. Each time I finished a chapter I immediately wanted to listen to the next. The story was gripping throughout and I didn't want it to end.

    Ugh ...
Needed a serious editor. Silly, too many characters, preposterous situations, nonsensical sub plots ... a pretty ridiculous story.
    Much Better Than Last Entry
I enjoyed this installment of the series. After the last book, I got the impression the author was throwing the character overboard. Obviously that was not the case. The story was well developed and Will was back to his old self. I am not sure how to interpret the ending of this book...so I hope the author does the right thing in the next book...

    Top Read
A top read. This is one of those books that is so easy to pick up and read. The plot has potential to lead the reader anywhere. Whoâs the real target? Who can the Nowhere Man trust? Heâs helping two people at the same time, which goes against all his training and his code of âOne mission at a time.â But can he trust either of them? If not, they are really, really good at deception. There are no tell-tale signs. On top of all this thereâs a possible love interest. It could work out, but how can he let someone else into his world?
Whatever happens the reader is sure right from the beginning that this book is heading for an explosive climax. But against who?
Anyone who loves a protagonist who is daring and audacious, who uses intense force to resolve other peopleâs crisisâs, who works completely alone, who infiltrates dangerous situations with ease, who is a weapons expert and who is exceptionally resilient and destructive, yet who can blend into the background with ease, will just love Orphan X

    Language: English

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 89 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
In this exciting international thriller featuring Japanese antiques art dealer and PI Jim Brodie, a double murder at the Kennedy Center forces Brodie into a dangerous game of espionage - putting him in the crosshairs of the Chinese, North Korean, and American governments.
Jim Brodie is an antiques dealer, Japan expert, and second-generation private investigator. When two theater friends are murdered backstage at a Kennedy Center performance in Washington, DC, he's devastated - and determined to hunt down the killer. He's not the only one.
After the attack Brodie is summoned to the White House. The first lady was the college roommate of one of the victims, and she enlists Brodie - off the books - to use his Japanese connections to track down the assassin. Homeland Security head Tom Swelley is furious that the White House is meddling and wants Brodie off the case. Why? For the same reason a master Chinese spy known only as Zhou, one of the most dangerous men alive, appears on the scene: Those murders were no random act of violence.
Brodie flies to Tokyo to attend the second of two funerals, and his friend's daughter, Anna, is kidnapped during the ceremony. It is then Brodie realizes that the murders were simply bait to draw her out of hiding. Anna, it seems, is the key architect of a top-secret NSA program that gathers the personal secrets of America's most influential leaders. Secrets so damaging that North Korea and China will stop at nothing to get them.
Publishers Weekly said, "Readers will want to see more of the talented Jim Brodie", and The Spy Across the Table is an edge-of-your-seat thriller in Barry Lancet's wildly popular and highly acclaimed series.

Best Espionage book I've heard in a long time!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and did not want it to end! This is the 4th book in the Jim Brodie series. I don't think it really matters if they are read in order as each book is a stand alone mystery, the author gives some background to relationships in each book.
This book begins with Brodie introducing his friend and college roommate to a Japanese friend, they are both murdered and Brodie feels extremely guilty. In The meanwhile the First Lady of the US contacts him as his other person killer used to be her roommate in college. Following the murders Brodie goes to Japan for his friend's funeral and the woman's daughter is kidnapped during the service.
Here begins a wild espionage story that will keep you not only interested but on the edge of your seat wanting to know more. Traveling through Japan, China and N. Korea Brodie doesn't know who to trust. Even with the President and First Lady assisting from the states Brodie still manages to get himself kidnapped while trying to rescue his deceased friend's daughter. He is tortured for information and scheduled for execution... I have to end my commentary there or ruin this excellent book for someone else.
The end was kind of sad and I'm not sure if it will be a lead into the next book or (?).
Scott Brick does a phenomenal job narrating.
    This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
