Publisher's Summary:
The intrigue of The Raven Boys and the "supernatural or not" question of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer coalesce in this young adult mystery, where nothing is quite as it seems, no one is quite who you think, and everything can change on a dime.
Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.
Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, with wild red hair and freckles. Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee. Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them. Wink. Poppy. Midnight. Two girls. One boy. Three voices that burst into the audio in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.
What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.
For fans of Holly Black, We Were Liars, and The Virgin Suicides, this mysterious tale full of intrigue, dread, beauty, and a whiff of something strange will leave you utterly entranced.
Members Reviews:
The Dr Suess way of repeating words is distracting.
The narrators are fantastic.
The tone of the story is reminiscent of The Raven Boys (kind of dark, poetic cadence etc.) and the story itself is very good. You want to keep reading, to find out what happens (even though you already have an idea).
My biggest issue with it is the writing style. This is the first book I've read from this author so I don't know if it's something that happens in all of her books but it's insanely distracting and left me feeling anxious. She repeats words over and over in succession.
"Rip. Rip, rip."
"Rustle leaves, rustle rustle."
"Squeak, squeak"
Etc etc etc
It's throughout the entire book and only once (during some kind of manic inner dialogue) did it seem to fit. The rest of the time I kept inwardly groaning or finishing the sentence for the characters and wondering why the editor didn't suggest she tone it down.
The characters are wonderfully dimensional though so through so I kept the 4 stars instead of my initial 3.
Mesmerizing tale
I walk when I listen to audiobooks, and I had to keep on walking to get to the end of this compelling story. The excellent performances added to the intensity of the tale. Michael Crouch was perfect as Midnight, the young boy caught in the middle. The female narrators also captured the mystery of Wink and the cattiness of Poppy.
This story grabs you
I really enjoyed this book. I also highly suggest if you're looking for something else to read that a slightly like it you pick up the book of speculation.
Fairy Tales, Villains & Heroes
If you could sum up Wink Poppy Midnight in three words, what would they be?
Friends or Bullies?
Who was your favorite character and why?
In the end, I really did not like all 3 characters because they were all unreliable with their secrets
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
I listened to this audiobook as part of the 2017 Hub Reading Challenge and totally loved the Narration by Michael Crouch as Midnight, with Alicyn Packard & Caitlin Davies as the dreamer, Wink who believes in villains & heroes and mean girl, Poppy who did not care about anyone (other than Lief, Wink's brother- but he could not abide her nasty ways). I am not a lover of unreliable narrators and oh were these three unreliable.
