This review is from: The Open and Shut Case: Volume One of the Case Books of Octavius Bear (Paperback)
Many books these days can easily be read via scanning pages in rapid succession--while keeping an eye on a pot of boiling spaghetti, say, or an ear on a baby monitor. This is not one of them. Harry DeMaio's multi-layered plot line, his quips, puns, witticisms, word plays, and cultural references, his filled-with-foibles animal characters who have taken over the world (quite possibly an improvement over the current status quo) require a reader's full attention. Otherwise, some of the best jokes will slither right by. Sort of like the old Rowan and Martin Laugh-In piggyback style--but a thousand times more sophisticated.
So picture a gorgeous, sexy, diamond-wearing cheetah named (what else?) Chita. A villainous duck gang named (what else?) the Black Quack. And, of course, a crime-solving Kodiak named Octavius whose brilliant, scientific mind has eliminated his species' need to hibernate (such a horrific waste of valuable time), but like all of the sleep-deprived among us, has a tendency to doze off at inopportune moments. High-energy narrator Maury Meerkat sees and knows all, sort of like the omniscient observer played by Omar Sharif in Dr. Zhivago--but with more insight and a sharper sense of humor. He relates, for example, an attempt to help his friend Octavius to reinsert a dropped contact lens, since the bear has paws "the size of volleyballs," but gets tossed halfway across the room for his trouble. Yet he keeps smiling. As will every reader who relaxes, doesn't rush, and thoroughly enjoys this wild ride.
A Keeper Becomes a Classic
Suspend disbelief. Open your mind. Be prepared to be entertained from the first page. Yes, the characters in this book are animals, wild and domesticated. Yes, they have evolved, after a cataclysm wiped out homo-erectus, to have human traits of speech, thought, dexterity and emotion. Go with it.
Harry DeMaio, the phenomenally clever and playfully wise author, (a human who avoided the cataclysm evidently) establishes the premise and never lets go. Octavius Bear, the genius Kodiak, who has cured hibernation but not the unfortunate side effect of the cure - narcolepsy, is called in to solve the Case of the stolen Deep Blue Sapphire. The culprits, Imperius Drake and the Black Quack Gang, a Mandarin duck, a cheetah and a baboon (brains, beauty and brawn) outsmart Chicago's finest (Drum roll please - each and every one named Daley!). The villains stay one step ahead of Octavius's team of Maury Meerkat and Inspector Wallaroo.
The twists and turns are devious, the asides to the audience (the reader) are delightfully snide and the explanations of animal adaptation to the human world seem possible. Mr. DeMaio respects his reader, welcoming us into his world with elegant language, intelligent malapropisms and double-bladed puns.
