    Publisher's Summary:
As the supposed new owner of property coveted by the Church of the Everlasting Sin, she'd be irresistible bait for the reclusive and charismatic Reverend Samuel. His fortified compound in the mountains near Grace, North Carolina, had been the last known residence of two women murdered in ways that defied scientific explanation. Though hardly as naive or as vulnerable as she appears, Tessa knows she has a lot to learn about using her unique gift. She also knows that Bishop and the SCU have to be desperate to rely on an untried psychic agent in an undercover operation so dangerous. And desperate they are.
For the killer they're hunting is the most terrifying they've ever faced and shakes even the most seasoned agents: a soulless megalomaniacal cult leader who can use their own weapons, talents, and tactics against them.
By entering the cult's well-guarded compound, Tessa will be exposing herself to the dark magnetism of a psychopath on an apocalyptic crusade of terror that spares no one, not even the youngest victims. And Samuel has protected himself within a fanatically loyal congregation, many of whom occupy surprising positions of power within the community. Even Grace's chief of police, Sawyer Cavenaugh - a man Tessa will have to trust with her life - may be unable to protect her. Because no one, not even Tessa herself, can guarantee she's strong enough to resist - or powerful enough to battle - a killer who's less than human.

Unfortunately for Lena, though, she knows that best-case scenarios only happen in the movies. The murder is the first in a series of brutal crimes against beautiful women thought to be perpetrated by the same man, a killer dubbed Romeo in the press. It's the case of a lifetime, and promises to either elevate Lena to the upper echelons of a publicity-hungry department in need of heroes, or bring about a very public and painful fall from grace. Lena has been in the public eye before, on the night her rock-star brother was gunned down on a dark street in Hollywood - an unsolved murder so grisly she's never recovered. She knows the score when the press and the LAPD collide.
As the investigation plays out and a massive forest fire blankets the city with acrid smoke, a cloud of conspiracy descends on Lena's investigation, and she knows she'll have to grind this one out...because Nikki Brant's death just breathed new life into more than one closed case...because the web of conspiracy is spun more intricately than she can possibly imagine... and because Lena knows there's only one rock-solid rule to murder in L.A.: The bigger the spectacle, the deeper the horror.

    incredible
As a longtime listener and reader of mysteries and thrillers this is one of the finest of both these genres combined. Ellis is a breath of fresh air in the congested world of writing. Well plotted, twisty, surprising and excellent character development. Couldn't ask for more.
Robert Ellis is one of my new FAVORITE authors!
I checked out The Lost Witness through my library and loved it. I then did some research on this author and found that he has only written 4 books. I found City of Fire through Audible and was just as pleased with this book. I contacted the author and found that his first two books only came out as paperbacks ): . The narrator does a very good job with character changes. This thriller is for all that love twist and turns up until the last page and enjoy staying up all night to finish. You will not be able to put this one down!
    Good to the last drop!
Just like a good cup of coffee, this book held you to the very end. You were constantly trying to figure out who was the good guy and who was the bad guy -- and who was the really bad guy.
Great story and excellent narration. I am anxious to move to her next story.
It was interesting to have a man write such a striking novel about a woman -- thanks.
    Too Many Words...
Maybe Robert Ellis got paid by the word? How else to explain the tedious detail thats like sand in a useful machine? Imagine something like,
She looked down. There was grass. No not grass, but green, maybe shamrocks? Or maybe just weeds on the surface wet with dew. Dew? Yes, dew that the LA sun hadnt boiled from beneath her brown shoes. Dew that meant there was a night before. Dew that covered the world. So she looked up and at her watch and wondered about time
Get it? Tedious details that advance neither the plot nor narrative, nor even character complexity. Im reminded of third grade essay assignments that demanded us to hand in 200 words, words we counted and recounted until they added up.
Pity, since the story is good, the plot intriguing, and the characterizations reasonably deep and resonant.

Who stole one of Egypt's most priceless treasures? That is the question that haunts the authorities after a distinguished British gentleman with an upper-crust accent cons his way past a security guard and escapes into the desert carrying a world-famous, one-of-a-kind historic relic. But the Egyptian authorities and Interpol believe they know the identity of the culprit. The brazen crime bears all the earmarks of the work of one "Sir John Smythe", the suave and dangerously charming international art thief who is, in fact, John Tregarth, the longtime significant other of Vicky Bliss. But John swears he is retired - not to mention innocent - and he vows to clear his name by hunting down the true criminal.
Vicky's faith in her man's integrity leaves her no choice but to take a hiatus from her position at a leading Munich museum and set out for the Middle East. Vicky's employer, the eminent Herr Doktor Anton Z. Schmidt, rotund gourmand and insatiable adventurer, decides to join the entourage.
But dark days and myriad dangers await them in this land of intriguing antiquity. Each uncovered clue seems to raise even more questions for the intrepid Vicky - the most troubling being, Where is John going during his increasingly frequent and unexplained absences?
The stakes are elevated considerably when a ransom note arrives, accompanied by a grisly memento intended to speed up negotiations - because now it appears that murder most foul has been added to the equation.

    I love Vicki Bliss
The Vicki Bliss series has always been my favorite of Elizabeth Peter's work. I am so glad she revisited Vicki. The trip back has been wonderful. Look for the other titles, Borrower of the Night, Street of Five Moons, Silhouette in Scarlet, Night Train to Memphis, Trojan Gold. These earlier works are somewhat dated, but great stories all the same.
    An absolute hoot
Where does Laughter of Dead Kings rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is not the "best" Elizabeth Peters novel in terms of complexity of character development or literary merit. It is, however, the funniest thing that she has ever written -- the author's ebullient satire of Vicky, Amelia and even herself. I loved the book, I love Vicky, I adore Amelia and embrace Mrs. Mertz, who deserves to have the most famous swordsman in Europe as her adoring admirer. This fast-moving farcical thriller will be celebrated most by the millions of fans of Vicky Bliss and Amelia Peabody, but it can be appreciated by anyone whose sense of adventure is as broad as her sense of the absurd.
Bliss is back!! We should all rejoice.
After too long of an absence Elizabeth peters returns us to the world of everyone's favorite art historian Dr. Bliss. If you enjoyed her earlier books you will love this one. It is full of all the stock characters we've come to know and love. Elizabeth brings us breakneck adventure and intrigue without insulting our intelligence. I can recommend without any hesitation that others buy this book.
I've already listened to this book many times!
Vicky Bliss is one of my favorite characters. Her stories are funny and serious and full of action. I wish there were more in the series, and hope there are more to come. This one is set in current time, so that cell phones are involved.

    Another great Peculiar Crimes mystery
I just love the Peculiar Crimes mysteries. They are so much fun to listen to! And the narrator is fabulous. You can't go wrong with these books.
    addictive, always a pleasure
Wonderful, absolutely perfect narrator; endearing, lovable characters that I can't get enough of; masterful narrative structure.
Sure, the ending is a bit of a stretch, but it still goes down well. This series is one of my major addictions.
    Loved this book!
I just finished White Corridor and am crestfallen that I have now listened to all the books in this series. I adored every one of them, but have to note that White Corridor may be my favorite. The plot is absolutely riveting, the characters complex and interesting and, of course, the two aged detectives, just as bright and captivating as always. Mr. Fowler is a brilliant writer and Tim Goodman, as narrator, is superb. I have listened to a number of the books multiple times. If you like a good, quirky, contemporary, engaging mystery with surprise twists-and-turns, you can't beat White Corridor. I highly recommend this - and all the other Bryant and May books - if this is your genre. I am missing my two detectives already!
    Dreadfull
Starts out with a group of suburban women sitting around killing a moth they have captured under a glass by concentrating their minds on this pointlessly cruel task and yapping about how "all women" have some sort of "extra" psychic power which they can use to defend themselves against men. And moths, apparently. Delightfully encompassing sexism, classism, and animal abuse all in the first paragraph. I am returning this and have no idea what happened next.
    What????
What a disappointment after so many great B&M novels. This one has too many rambling plots and is very slow to get going. Seems to be trying too hard.

Length: 10 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-20-07
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 58 votes

Tensions in the city have been running high. The previous week, a police officer shot and killed an unarmed mother of two in what he claims was self-defense. In the aftermath, protestors have waged increasingly agitated anti-police protests. Crenshaw's death, it seems, is not unrelated - within a matter of hours, police arrest two young men who appear to have embarked on a crime spree in the aftermath of the protests.
The case looks straightforward, especially when one of the suspects confesses. But then the man recants, claiming coercive police tactics, and Samantha finds herself digging for more evidence in a search that leads her through an elaborate maze of connections between the city's drug trade and officers in the bureau.

Publishers Weekly)"Burke, daughter of author James Lee Burke and once a Portland prosecutor herself, delivers a politically charged, gritty thriller." (

    Members Reviews:
    Good book. Bad narrator.
I was pleased to see a title written by the daughter of one of my favorite authors. I was not disappointed by the story and the quality of writing. Ms. Burke stands on her own feet, and I'm looking forward to more by this author. This is really quite good, especially for a new author's debut.
The Brit-accented narrator, however, was an ill-suited choice for a story set in Portland, Oregon. The accent was most disconcerting.
Aside from Brit accent, the narrator was irritating. This is the narration of a failed actress. Trying to add feeling to the story, the narrator over-acted. The narration featured phoney laughs, meant to punch up the warmth of the interactions between the characters. This effect really fell flat. These phoney laughs were sprinkled liberally throughout. It was as un-nerving as listening to your stupid boss who laughs at his own jokes--HAR-DEE-HAR. This narration sounded less like an audiobook to me, and more like a crazy, cat-hoarding old woman reading to her pets. I guess the producers of this audiobook didn't figure a new author merited a narrator of any quality.
My conclusion--I'd better enjoy the works of this author in real-book format until after she's got more notches on her literary belt.
    Awful, terrible reading.
This may be a good book but I'll never know.
Attempting to listen for the third time and it's so badly done I can't bear listening for another minute.
    Wasted money.
Why does Audible allow this to happen to it's subscribers?
    Good story? Who knows?
I love James Lee Burke, and was so eager to hear this book by his daughter Alafair (her first book was "not available in my region"!?) I bought it without a second thought. But I couldn't even finish listening, thanks to the AWFUL narration! Her mispronunciations, inappropriate timing and emphases, phony laughter, bad accents, and really - just her voice - ruined it for me. Her "Happy Birthday, Girlie..." irritated me so much I almost threw my ipod out the window. Since I couldn't finish the book, I will get a copy to read instead and never again fail to listen to a sample before selecting a book.
Ignore the warnings at your own risk...
I read the reviews by other readers and ignored the warnings regarding the bad narration. I am so sad, as I have completely wasted a credit.

"Kate Shugak is becoming a leader among her people and is already a leader in the sorority of women detectives." (Publishers Weekly)
"An engaging plot, the fascinating Native American frame, the well-developed characters, and the vivid depiction of the Alaskan wilderness add up to another strong entry in this consistently satisfying series." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
You will be WIDE AWAKE during "A Deeper Sleep"
It must be very difficult for Stabenow to write a bad mystery book, as she doesn't disappoint here. This book is a bit more sombre fare than some of the earlier Kate Shugak stories, perhaps because we get flashbacks to earlier deaths from the point of view of the victims. The setting is the Park, so we get further development of the Park Rats we have come to know through the previous volumes and we become invested in learning the outcome of the events. I recommend reading as many of the previous books as possible to get more out of this story.
Dunne did a good job with the narration; however, those who have become acclimated to Marguerite Gavin's narration of Stabenow's universe (both the Kate Shugak and Liam Campbell series) may be distracted by Dunne's rendition of the voices. I am fan of Dunne's other narrations (particularly of "The Sharing Knife" series), so I wasn't off put by her narration, although it did take an adjustment at the beginning of the book.
Read this one & do not listen if you like the other books.
Would you be willing to try another one of Bernadette Dunnes performances?
NO!!! She was horrible & cannot pull the characters off the page. I only finished the audible as I was on a long drive & couldn't read the book. She made everyone sound like school girls or cartoon characters none of which fit Dana Stabenows books.
Was A Deeper Sleep worth the listening time?
No, if I had realized it was not Margaruite Gavin & listened to a sample when I purchased it I would have read it instead. Bernadette Dunne should not be a narrator.
    Any additional comments?
Love the books but this was painful to listen too. It was my fault for thinking it would be the same narrator as the other books.
Change in Narrator was a big disappointed.
What did you like best about A Deeper Sleep? What did you like least?
The change in narrator this far into the series made it difficult to objectively judge Bernadette Dunne. Margaret Gavin has become the voice of Kate. I stopped listening and thought I was finished with the series but I see that Gavin is back in the next book.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bernadette Dunne?
    Margaret Gavin
Same great writing but suffers from new narrator.
Would you listen to A Deeper Sleep again? Why?
    Yes. I love the writing.
What did you like best about this story?
Vivid detail makes you feel like you know these characters personally. Alaska is as much a character as any of the people.

"An entertainment of almost Byzantine complexity in which practically nothing is as the facts would seem....Highly satisfactory." (The New Yorker)
    Members Reviews:
good entree to the Hard Boiled
THE CHILL, or the author Ross Macdonald was recommended to me as a good entree to the "hard boiled" detective novel. The book was written I think a good fifty years ago, so there is a moment of adjusting to that stylistic time. Well worth it though since a tight, yet complex story emerges in the gritty underbelly of a time when California was a blossom. If this isn't doesn't catch your interest, pass--but if you've wanted to know the origins of our favorite detectives you will be entertained.
Ross MacDonald is the high king of hard-boiled
Ross Macdonald might write Chandleresque noir as good or better than Chandler. Some of the lines from 'The Chill' were so sharp they could cut a day into dark chocolate, bite-sized hours. 'The Chill' had a pretty good twist at the end. The only downside to the novel was it almost needed an overcoat with extra pockets for all the characters. By the end, I needed a small pocket book to keep all femme fatales and dead women straight.
Like most Macdonald novels, the dénouement of 'the Chill' seems to snake into your pants, squirm and bite you before you are quite ready for the book to end. That is one thing about Macdonald: he ties up ALL the snakes at the end.
There is a popular trope (often attributed to Brian Eno) that the Velvet Underground's first album only sold 30,000 copies during its first five years but that everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band. I think the same thing can be said about Macdonald. He was one of those writers who probably sold less than his talent deserved, but whose influence on the modern-day detective novel is practically unsurpassed. He was a writer's writer, the professor of pulp, the high king of hard-boiled, the prophet of classic myths retold as California crime fiction. He was a god and you bet you ass every single word was a sacred creation.
    Complicated
A complex whodunit but it all comes together beautifully in the end. Slight spoiler alert, perhaps only Freud or the Greek gods could have seen this one coming. Loved it!
    Brilliant plot
One of McDonald's best among so many good ones. Always a great twist at the end.
A Classic! Like Raymond Chandler at his finest!!
A winding mystery with unexpected twists and turns that will have you spellbound to the very end. Masterfully performed, you'll feel like you've immersed yourself in the best of film noir as the words jump to life in your imagination!

Two years after the events of Case Histories, which left him a retired millionaire with an occasional girlfriend in Julia, a former client, Jackson has followed her to Edinburgh for its famous summer festival. The incident of road rage he happens to witness sets in motion a chain of events that will pull a wealthy almost-widow, a timid crime novelist, and a female police detective into Jackson's orbit.
    Critic Reviews:
"Atkinson hits the jackpot again, putting her skill with complex plots to excellent use, in a literary mystery infused with her characteristic quirk and verve." (Atlantic Monthly)
"[With] crackling one-liners, spot-on set pieces, and full-blooded cameos...this [is yet] another absorbing character study from the versatile, effervescent Atkinson." (Publishers Weekly)
"In One Good Turn...the deft and tricky British author Kate Atkinson shows again, in her inimitable bleakly funny way, how much easier it is to explain a death than to solve a life." (The New York Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
    Abriged
I did not notice that this was abridged when I downloaded it. Having just finished listening to Atkinson's wonderfully vibrant Case Histories, I couldn't believe how dull the characters in this book were and how flat the story. Then I noticed the word "abridged." I checked out the full length book on CD from my local library, downloaded it and listened. You want to know how they cut an almost 11 hour story down to 5? They take out all character development. You know, the stuff that make you care about the characters? Their history, the things that allow you to become emotionally engaged...This is a great story and the narration, both the abridged and unabridged, are spot on.
I won't be fooled again. Avoid the abridged version like the plague.
Kate Atkinson should never be abridged
I had picked up "Case Histories" last week and was absolutely mesmerized by not just the characters and mystery, but by her fluid writing and timeshifting narrative. While it was interesting to catch up with the characters from that story, this didn't nearly have the character development or cohesive storyline of the first novel, but that could be due to this only being available in the dreaded abridged format. The narrator is not nearly good as Susan Jameson, but he does a decent job (even if his default accent sounds like someone british trying to do a vaguely American accent, even though there are no American characters in the book.
    The Cliff Notes version
Kate Atkinson is a wonderful writer and I've listened to all her other books. But this abridgement eliminates the richness of the writing, leaving behind only a fast-forward series of plot elements. Not worth the money.
    Should've read the fine print...
What disappointed you about One Good Turn?
Like an idiot I didn't notice this was an abridged version. The book is great, but they've butchered it. Anyone know if there is an unabridged audio version available?
    Why abridge anything by Atkinson???
I love Atkinson, and was disappointed when I belatedly realized this book was abridged. Shame on me...I wanted more, of course. The narrator wasn't that good either, unfortunately.

He should have listened to his intuition. Ed awakens on the morning after his 40th birthday to find that Barbara has vanished, and Ed's money from his business, his bank, and his brokerage accounts has been wired to the Cayman Islands. Barbara, it appears, drugged his birthday wine, neatly cleaned him out, and then fled to Mexico, from where she can't be extradited. And as if that weren't bad enough, when Ed arrives at work that morning, he discovers he's been assigned a new client who looks like nothing but trouble: Joe Big Bear, a part-time mechanic charged with a triple homicide.
Ed hires two slightly shady investigators to search for his wife. But when they track Barbara down in Puerto Vallarta, they discover that Joe Big Bear may also be embroiled in Barbara's plot. Ed soon finds himself caught in a scheme much more far reaching and deadly than anyone could have expected.
    Critic Reviews:
"Scarcely an excess word gets in the way of the briskly moving plot." (Publishers Weekly)
"Woods first introduced Eagle in 1992, in Santa Fe Rules. He was then, and still is, a fascinatingly flawed character." (Booklist)

    am a new fan
really good story- I read the sequel first and couldn't wait to get to the prequel!!
    Too much sex
I started to enjoy a well-written and well-narrated story with lots of surprises in the plot but was disappointed by the degree of graphic sex that showed up in the second half.
    Don't Waste Your Time
Couldn't even finish listening to this one. It dragged on and on and on.
    Short Straw
I like Woods. His book Chief was so good I could not stop listening. However, Short Straw was painful. The repetition of lines was impossible to the point it was uncomfortable.
    Starts OK- becomes ridiculous
I enjoyed the first portion of this book but as it went on it seemed the author lost any sense of needing to tell a story that was at least plausible. I finally stopped listening when it became so implausible I lost interest in the characters and started feeling annoyed at the author for being so sloppy.
