    the best!!
I am a long time Erle Stanley Gardner fan. This dramatization is so true to the original Perry Mason. Jerry Robbins and the Colonial Radio Players bring this story to life with such class. Very entertaining! I listen to this story often and enjoy it more each time I listen to it. Love the Colonial Radio Theater-keep up the good work.
    Good
    I enjoyed it
If you enjoy old time radio, you will enjoy this one
    Perry Mason rules as always
    Very enjoyable
I listen to Perry Mason radio stories while gardening. Perfect length (hour and a half). Great narrators, clear voices. Thank you
    Not My Perry Mason
This might not be a fair review. I'm told that this version of Mr. Mason is the way Earl Stanley Gardner wrote him and, being fair, since I haven't read any of the novels in more years than I care to count, that might be true.
But, if you are looking for a story about a straight shooter, playing by the rules, lawyer's lawyer, this isn't it. This Mr. Mason subverts the system, mishandles evidence, even suggests that his client lie (subourning perjury???).
I read about a zillion books per, and I listen to just as many. I won't be listening to more of these - why waste my time on a protagonist I don't like.
Oh and I was disappointed by the performance too. No passion, no verve.
Interrupted by a loud "bang" at end of each scene
A very uncomfortable read due to the unduly loud noise every 3 or 4 minutes, used - presumably - to mark the start of a new scene. Not neded and certainly far too loud.
The narration is very good but I found the story very far fetched

    Title: The Sherlockian
    Author: Graham Moore
    Narrator: James Langton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-01-10
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 392 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In December 1893, Sherlock Holmes-adoring Londoners eagerly opened their Strand magazines-- anticipating the detective's next adventure-- only to find the unthinkable: his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, had killed their hero off. London spiraled into mourning -- crowds sported black armbands in grief -- and railed against Conan Doyle as his assassin.
Then in 1901, just as abruptly as Conan Doyle had "murdered" Holmes in "The Final Problem", he resurrected him. Though the writer kept detailed diaries of his days and work, Conan Doyle never explained this sudden change of heart. After his death, one of his journals from the interim period was discovered to be missing, and in the decades since, has never been found.
    Or has it?
When literary researcher Harold White is inducted into the preeminent Sherlock Holmes enthusiast society, The Baker Street Irregulars, he never imagines he's about to be thrust onto the hunt for the holy grail of Holmes-ophiles: the missing diary. But when the world's leading Doylean scholar is found murdered in his hotel room, it is Harold - using wisdom and methods gleaned from countless detective stories - who takes up the search, both for the diary and for the killer.

    Worth purchasing
I recommend "The Sherlockian" to any Sherlock Holmes fan. (I didn't know that they were called "Sherlockians," did you?) Although I don't quite qualify as a Sherlock Holmes fan, I have listened to all the stories at least once, and enjoyed them. This author -- Graham Moore -- definitely qualifies as a Sherlockian, and knows whereof he speaks. He has woven an entertaining tale (actually, two concurrent tales) around the mystery of Holmes' creator -- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- and his (apocryphal) missing diary. Using the technique of interweaving two stories -- one set in the present day, and one set during Doyle's time -- Graham Moore explains why Doyle resurrected Sherlock Holmes ten years after he had killed him off. Apparently, Doyle considered himself well-rid of Holmes, and never wanted to write about him again. However, Doyle's public never forgave him for killing off their favorite detective, whom they definitely did not consider fictional. If we can believe the stories emanating from that time, it would seem that all of literate England was thrown into angry turmoil at the abrupt loss of Sherlock Holmes. (Maybe they felt the way I did when Harry Potter grew up ...!) As far as I can determine with a little quick research, Graham Moore invented the missing Doyle diary in "The Sherlockian" to create an intriguing mystery for his Sherlockian protagonist -- Harold White -- to investigate, using Holmes' protocols. At the same time ... well, actually, 110 years earlier ... Doyle himself is investigating a series of puzzling murders. Both investigations spin off into unlikely territory (requiring the loss of a star in my rating), but they do lead to a satisfying resolution. The British narrator, James Langton, has a good voice, and does an excellent job of narrating "The Sherlockian." Like many British actors, his rendition of the American accent sounds funny -- betraying how yucky we Americans must sound to the Brits -- but I expect American actors trying to do any of the myriad British accents probably sound pretty funny to the Brits, too.

Like watching an hourglass! Occasionally amusing.
This is the third of the series that I have read and the least engaging thus far. The story is dragged out to indulge Montalbano's sexual appetite in addition to his familiar palette, his bureaucratic intrigues, and comical neuroses about aging, surrounded by passing references to the case at hand. Worse, it was easy to determine the villain and the motive before I was half way through. Montalbano, whose abilities to see beneath the surface are legendary, is incapable of seeing beyond the end of his nose in this book. This episode in the series is much over-rated.
Grover Gardner was an entertaining narrator, as usual.

One of my favorite in the Scumble River Series
Would you consider the audio edition of Murder of a Wedding Belle to be better than the print version?
I would not wish wedding planning on anyone especially for Skye's cousin Belle. As always Scumble River is full of great characters and I feel like I know them.
    Not That Impressed
What was most disappointing about Denise Swanson???s story?
Story was ok but the rudeness of everyone Skye talks to gets on my nerves.
What about Christine Leto???s performance did you like?
    She was fine.
    Love love the series
Can't wait for the next one. Guess I will have to read the earlier ones, really enjoy it. Great characters, keeps the interest, funny moments, narrator is good.
    Brides Maids
What did you love best about Murder of a Wedding Belle?
I am not sure, I enjoyed this book but for some reason it really didn't excite me like all the other books I have read in this series have excited me. It actually took me longer to listen to this book than it has any of the other books.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
No not really, even though there was a murder that took place, I thought most of the book was around the wedding and wedding party. I know the wedding planner was the person who ended up getting murdered but when Sky took over it just seemed that the whole book was just really about her planning this wedding, not until the end of the book did she start really getting into solving the murder. There were little times throughout the book where she did try and find out things about the murder but for the most part it was wedding stuff.
Which character as performed by Christine Leto was your favorite?
That is hard to say because there were many different characters that she had to give personalities to, and she did an amazing job at not only doing the regular character but all the extra characters from the wedding party.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No not really, don't get me wrong it was a good book but to me most of the book was about Sky planning this wedding and not solving the murder. I got spoiled and used to there being different mysteries to solve within each story and this one only had 1 mystery which was who killed the wedding planner and why.
    Any additional comments?

    A Wedding of Nightmares
It wasn't terrible, it wasn't great. Pretty good for reading fluff. My problem with it were the characters and the resolution of the story.

Montalbanos long-suffering girlfriend, Livia, joins him with a friend - husband and young son in tow - to keep her company during these dog days of summer. But when the boy suddenly disappears into a narrow shaft hidden under the familys beach rental, Montalbano uncovers something terribly sinister.
As the inspector spends the summer trying to solve this perplexing case, Livia refuses to answer his calls - and Montalbano is left to take a plunge that will affect the rest of his life.
Fans of the Sicilian inspector as well as listeners new to this increasingly popular series will enjoy following the melancholy but unflinchingly moral Montalbano as he undertakes one of the most shocking investigations of his career.
    Critic Reviews:
The joys of August Heat arise less from the central plot than from its margins: Montalbanos never-flagging fondness for food, his ruminations on aging, and his commentaries on Italian society. (The Washington Post)
Camilleris tenth mystery to feature [Inspector] Montalbano (after 2008s Paper Moon) cleverly balances a compelling story line with engaging characters. (Publishers Weekly)

There's No Fool Like An Old Fool!
These Inspector Montalbano mysteries are what I call travel quality; short enough to finish on a long ride or while waiting in an airport; engaging characters with a story that does not require intense concentration. It was sometimes LOL funny; I imagine it is even more entertaining in Italian. My biggest disappointment was with the ending. Past a certain point, it was out of character for Montalbano.
I enjoy listening to Grover Gardner's narration-good accents, clear enunciation, distinct characterizations.
This is the 10th in a series of 20 mysteries that, looking at reader reviews elsewhere, vary quite a bit in quality. This is only my third but is considered one of the best, which is why took advantage of a sale to buy it. To date, it appears that only the first 15 have been translated into English. The series has been made into a very popular Italian TV show. Separately, it has been scripted and performed in English, now in its second season on BBC Four, I think.
Check out the wikipedia article about the author. Now 87, he published the first of this popular series when he was 69. He's no fool.
    Something different in detective fiction
I enjoyed this, my first, Montalbano mystery. Apparently there are more than a dozen stories in Italian, some translated to English, and an Italian TV show based on this interesting detective. The narrator of this audiobook is skilled with various voices and accents appropriate to the characters. The story is unusual, but not improbable. I found Montalbano likeable, a real person who's good at what he does with a few little quirks here and there. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to my next Montalbano audiobook.
FYI: Some profanity that some may find offensive and a graphic description of the sexual assault/murder.

    Publisher's Summary:
When solitary marine biologist Doc Ford focused his telescope on the woman in the white boat, he didn't know his life was about to be capsized: that his conniving uncle, Tucker Gatrell, would discover the Fountain of Youth, that the National Enquirer would write about it, and that the law would beat down his door in search of three missing men.
But Doc Ford is about to find these things out - the hard way. Because in the shadowy world of Southwest Florida, where gators yawn, cattle craze, and Indian bones are buried, mysteries great and small have found the man to solve them.
    Critic Reviews:
"Like fellow Floridian Carl Hiaasen, White is adept at weaving ecological concerns into an oddball narrative with no loss of steam. The fate of the three missing men, even by bizarre Florida crime fiction standards, is inspired." (

A real Florida girl loves a real Florida story
Great book. Well researched. Entertaining. Humorous without making us Florida Crackers look stupid. I just wish they had told the narrator the right way to pronounce the Tamiami Trail.
I am so glad I didn't start the series with this
    Any additional comments?
This was a struggle for me. I absolutely hated the character representing Doc's uncle. This guy drove me crazy and reminded me of someone from my past. The story was a bit weak and predictable. At the bottom of the list of books I read this year.
    It was different but entertaining.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, certain friends would find it amusing; others maybe not so much.
What other book might you compare The Man Who Invented Florida to and why?
    None
Which character as performed by Dick Hill was your favorite?
Tuck dominated this book.. the Joe character was funny too, until the end.
Do you think The Man Who Invented Florida needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I don't know. If one had the imagination to write this one who knows what else is possible. I really liked the ones that were more centered on Ford and his associates and their activities on the water.
Slow moving with uninteresting central characters
I've read and enjoyed other books in the Doc Ford series but I found this one to be very tedious. The first part of the book meanders as slowly as an Everglades current and I kept losing interest as it plodded along.
The accents of the old men really annoyed me. They seemed almost cartoonish for some reason. Maybe my disinterest in the plot spilled over to the performance. Usually, Dick Hill is a wonderful narrator.
I wouldn't recommend this one unless you have a long boring drive to make and nothing else to do.

    The best yet
I really enjoyed this book and I think it might be the best in the series so far. The plot changes in the book seems natural. Abby is also growing up more. I look forward to the next book.
    WONDERFUL!
These books just keep getting better and better! The Narrator is perfect and does exactly what I think "Abby" would actually sound like (if she were real) After buying and listening to the 1st book, I loved it so much that I bought the whole series and I must say, there are NO Regrets! It'st a delightful way to spend time in traffic, doing chores or stopping for a break at work. My Spirit Guides are telling me "Read or listen to everything she writes, you WON'T be disappointed" Can't wait to start on the new book "Vision Impossible" it's getting great reviews already!
    Terrible reader
Would you try another book from Victoria Laurie and/or Elizabeth Michaels?
The narrator cannot pronounce words correctly to save her live. For instance, one of the most annoying mispronunciations for me is cavalry. She keeps pronouncing it as Calvary. When you want help don't ask for a biblical location! Her voice is also nasal and she sounds like an old woman. If I didn't like the series I could never put up with her.
The gang moves to Austin, one by one
It's almost too much to believe that Abby and her FBI boyfriend Dutch would both find jobs in the same FBI office in Texas as opposed to Michigan AND be followed individually by home contractor Dave, Dutch's old best friend from the police department, while Candace preceded them there and had already bought her condo as had Bryce, Dutch and Abby's boss. They all arrived separately but coincidentally for all different reasons.
It felt a lot like old home month, but the office was a new environment for Abby. She was working with the cold case squad, and by weeks' end had reached the group's goal for the year! Abby didn't do that alone nor did she claim to. However, her boss Bryce, also Candace's boyfriend although they both were too unsteady to admit that, changed the group's methodology in that same first week.
Bryce immediately saw the value in Abby's skills. He had her prepare a lecture/lesson for the squad to show and teach her intuitive ways. No one showed up. However, they all went the following week when she taught them how to gain access to their own feelings. With the interactive fashion of "show and teach," the group was much more enthusiastic.
Candace and Abby began working a case of three missing and likely dead pre-teen girls. It became entangled in a dangerous accident, distraught friends, and an ex military man. A group back at the squad was working another case that Abby also felt was at some turning point at the same time.

    Rather be dead
Rather than focusing on the main characters of this series, Dead or Alive concentrates on a cold blooded killer that never makes a mistake and has no redeeming qualities. I kept fast forwarding, hoping it would get better but it just dragged on and on and on. I wouldn't listen to this book again at gunpoint!
    take your antidepressant first
A few years ago I read a book in this series titled Everybody Dies. That should have been reserved for this book. I usually enjoy the Kearny series and it has been getting a bit too sweet with the wife and family...but Mr McGarrity went overboard fixing that in this story and he mixed saccharine with bitter to no good effect. I guess read it to keep the series outline in case it is necessary for the next book..but don't have a gun in the room you might be tempted to use it. George Guidall makes anything wonderful to listen to but this subject matter nearly overwhelms his narration.
    good one!
McGarrity, Connelly, and Sandford are my favorite mystery writers. McGarrity has stopped writing mysteries, I think this was his last. The bad guy is especially bad in this one, but it is an excellent story.

The suspense is high as she fraternizes dangerously with the enemy, even becoming briefly involved with an Aryan supremacist. Black knows Paris well, and in her first-rate debut she deftly combines fascinating anecdotes from the city's war years with classic images of the City of Lights." (

Literate prose, intricate plotting, and multifaceted and unusual characters mark this excellent first mystery. Strongly recommended. (

    Members Reviews:
    Good story - odd telling
It's unusual to have a compelling story that is not very well told. A murder mystery in present day involving WWII and contemporary Nazis, the persecution of Parisian Jews in the Marais, and a reluctant detective who would rather be solving computer crimes, provides for a rich landscape in which to tell the tale. The author, however, must not think the reader too clever, as she reminds us of clues she has already given and re-identifies her characters, as well as providing unnecessary explanations of feelings behind bits of dialogue. She throws in a bit of French to remind us that we are in Paris, but ony chooses the words that most people would already know, leaving us with the feeling that these people are all bilingual. The narrator does not help the author's style, as her Parisian French accent is good, which makes for a jarring juxtaposition with the Standard American Dialect of the rest of the story. An interesting group of characters in a unique story are worth the listen, but it could have been more satisfyingly told.
    For young female audience
When I ran a public library I would have put this in the "Young Adult" section (officially age 12-18). I would have been happy to see a girl age 12 to 15 check it out. It has geographical and historical information that would be informative. A reviewer (for another item in this series) complained about the narrator's slow speed. She goes slow in this one too. I think she wants to be sure a young adult can follow what is being said. For what it
is, this selection is not bad.
    A bit simplistic and slow
I have already read several reviews that say pretty much what I would say about this book. One person said that this might appropriately be placed in the "young adult" section in a library. I might have said that it read like a young adult's first efforts at writing a book.
It just was awkward. I had thought perhaps it was a translation from the french, but I checked, and no, this is an American author writing in English. So, if you can accept that this has something of the feel of not-quite-polished writing about it, and manage the discomfort of the narrator, who speaks so maddeningly slowly that you want to jump in and say the next word for her, we are left with the story.
    I'm a sucker for Paris.

In 1969, Jake Cazalet saved the life of a Frenchwoman in Vietnam, and a brief, passionate affair ensued. Years later in Paris, he was introduced to another beautiful young woman - his daughter. For many reasons, their relationship remained a secret.
Now Jake Cazalet is president of the United States. Somehow, someone has discovered the truth about his daughter, and she is seized by a vicious extremist group. If the president does not comply with the kidnapper's demands - or uses any of America's security agencies to track them down - they will execute her. He has ten days to decide.
Desperate, he turns to British operative Sean Dillon and FBI agent Blake Johnson. And if these two men cannot find his daughter, the president will have to make the most momentous decision of all.

Not up for of the rest of the series. Too many cliques
Other reviews were correct skip the one. I will continue the series for now anyway
    Not up to standard
Would you try another book from Jack Higgins and/or Michael Page?
I am a fan of the Sean Dillon series. This book was disappointing. The dialogue was so full of cliches that I often found myself saying the next line with the narrator. The plot was predictable and overall this was a disappointment. I will however get the next book in the series and hope for a return to form.
Would you ever listen to anything by Jack Higgins again?
    Yes.
Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Pages performances?
Probably will have to if he performs other books in the Dillon series.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment
    Didn't receive the whole book.
Only one chapter. How do I get the rest? It is paid for
