But Lily finds something else: the body of a wealthy patron of the school. In between running the store and seeing her new boyfriend, Max - a "mythbuster" who is uncomfortable with her witchcraft - she uses her sleuthing skills to try to solve the murder. Soon Lily senses something from the school's vintage clothes, but it's not the smell of mothballs - it's the unmistakable aura of evil intent.

"Set in a vintage clothing store and starring a sensible and entertaining witch, this series will please paranormal fans." (Romantic Times)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is the second book of the Character Lilly Ivory as she grows more comfortable with being a witch and embracing her power. I'd this one as I did the first: funny and light, not violent or obscene. My observation for book two is the same as it is for #1; I wish the writer Juliet Blackwell would allow herself to give more depth to the characters. The French nuns were a major point in the book, but I still didn't really get to know these women and why they chose that path or why/if they had been deceived; the point was glazed over quickly in the story. I still liked the story however.
Would you recommend A Cast-Off Coven to your friends? Why or why not?
One could enjoy the book apart from the series, but I would recommend that you read book one first and the series in order.
Have you listened to any of Xe Sandss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Other than this series, no, but I like how Xe Sands reads for the characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wish I had that type of time, but I certainly wanted to read it all the way though.
    Any additional comments?
Audible should put more Juliet Blackwell book on Audio.
    Pretty good
If I could give this 3 and a half stars I would. It is a pleasant story with solidly developed characters. The characters are the reason I liked this book. The plot was good and the story flowed nicely. All in all it's a solid paranormal story. I can't give it more than 3 and a half stars because the story lacks suspense. It is worth the credit.
    Excellent audio!

She has an affinity for old clothes she can feel the previous owners past emotions in them so she opened a vintage clothing store which is becoming successful because she has a talent for pairing her customers with the exactly the right items. In the first novel Lily made new friends, gained Oscar the goblin for a familiar, met a hot investigative journalist named Max, and solved a murder.
Now Lily has been asked to come to the local Fine Arts school because the students think there may be a ghost living in a closet full of vintage clothing.

    Publisher's Summary:
Randy Wayne White has long been known for suspenseful plots, complex characters, and an extraordinary sense of place. His new series has them all - and then some.
Hannah Smith: a tall, strong, formidable Florida woman, the descendant of generations of strong Florida women. She makes her living as a fishing guide, but her friends, neighbors, and clients also know her as an uncommonly resourceful woman with a keen sense of justice - someone who can't be bullied - and they have taken to coming to her with their problems.
Her methods can be unorthodox, though, and those on the receiving end of them often wind up very unhappy - and sometimes very violent. And when a girl goes missing, and Hannah is asked to find her, that is exactly what happens....

Plot of the Story was good, but not great
    Any additional comments?
I've been reading R.W.W. for several years now, after I picked up an audiobook from the library about five years ago. I really like the majority of his work. The book was pretty good. I like Hana Smith, she's definitely the type of woman that I would find attractive. I like her down the business nature and no nonsense demeanor.
What I don't like so far is that the book is essentially set in the same location as the Doc Ford novels. I love Doc Ford, he reminds me of my Grandfather. The guy who is underestimated, but is surprisingly strong willed and strong minded.
What I really dislike most about the direction of this book is an alluded to romance between Doc Ford and Hana.....(YAWN!) This is so over done in novels, movies etc etc. Doc and Hana will play cat and mouse, they would be perfect together...but wait, they had that moment and if only "that thing/event/phone call/doorbell" didn't interrupt them......Randy, Move Hana somewhere else! James Patterson has both Alex Cross and Lindsey Boxer, but they work in much different parts of the United States.
Hana has the makings of a strong character, move her butt out of Florida and into Savannah, Tybee Island, Honolulu, Astoria (OR), Charleston, St. Pete or some other place where she doesn't touch Doc Ford again. This Character needs to be independent of Ford!
    Great new protagonist
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes
What other book might you compare Gone to and why?
Any of his Doc Ford novels
What aspect of Renee Raudmans performance would you have changed?
With the main voice being that of Hanna Smith, a SW Fla born and bread woman and fishing guide, she would have a more country / cracker accent.
    Any additional comments?
Like the new protagonist and the ties to the past novels of Randy's. Hope he keeps it up.
    Love Doc Ford. Hated this.
Would you try another book from Randy Wayne White and/or Renee Raudman?
I have all most all of Randy Wayne White's previous books, often in both hardback and digital. I loved his Doc Ford books, and would buy another one as soon as it becomes available. I also love the outdoor and adventure writing he did. Books like "Last Flight Out" and "The Sharks of Lake Nicaragua" keep me company on long kayak trips in the wilderness. I even like the early stuff he wrote as Randy Striker.

    Publisher's Summary:
The drag queen named Vera Reynolds swayed on-stage singing "Falling in Love Again". And a 16-year-old boy lay in Vera's fire-engulfed apartment very, very dead. He was a "rent boy", a sex-for-hire street kid who catered to the tastes of special customers. It was the kind of murder Soho's Vice Squad saw often. But the influential do-gooder who was a prime suspect in this one made the young boy's death different - a ticking bomb able to blast open the nasty, secret lives of politicians, judges... and cops.
Detective Jane Tennison had moved up the career ladder through sheer guts and an unstoppable passion for justice. Now, on her first day as the head of the Vice Squad, she caught a case threatening to wreck her career. She had been told whom to arrest - and whom to back off from - in the murder of the "rent boy". And she couldn't go with the program. She knew a destroyer of children was out there. She knew she had a choice: to save her future or go after him like an avenging angel, and damn the consequences to hell.

Not what I was hoping for at the end
I didn't like the main character very much. But I did read all 3 of the prime suspect books so I liked her well enough to read them all. When she became human....by being placed into a position that only a woman can really understand I liked her more but at the end we never found out where she went from there. Maybe there is another book out there somewhere.
    La Plante does not fail
Where does Silent Victims: Prime Suspect #3 rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Among the top 20
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
No, I have read all her books, but Davinia did bring the characters to life.
Which character as performed by Davina Porter was your favorite?
    Jane
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, when I find a good book and a wonderful narrator, I like to drag it out so it lasts longer. When you buy a book on tape, you never know if the narrator will ge good or the book interesting. With this book I already knew the plot, read it before, but I like Davinia so much, I wanted her to bring it to life again.
great story Loved it highly recommend it
thanks for the great narration. thoroughly enjoyed it Lynda la plante is wonderful hope you read it
    Great mystery novel
I've only discovered Tennison. These books are great. The stores or cases are very modern day and I love the narrator.
when you think you have a friend
I enjoyed this book, it was a bit sad to hear how all those boys were molested at a young age and to see how it affected them growing up if they didn't commit suicide. Jane did a good job at solving this case even with the other detective trying to go behind her back and sabotage her career she didn't let him win..

Forced as a child to flee the Nazis in Paris, Brouard was engaged in his latest project when he died: a museum in honor of those who resisted the German occupation of the island during World War II.
It is from this period of time that his murderer may well have come. But there are others on Guernsey with reason to want Guy Brouard dead: his wives, his business associates, his current mistress, the underprivileged teenagers he mentored - any of whom might have harbored a secret motive for murder. As family and friends gather for the reading of the will, Deborah and Simon St. James find that seemingly everyone on the history-haunted island has something to hide. And behind all the lies and alibis, a killer is lurking. In order to bring this person to justice, the St. James must delve into Guernsey's dark history - both past and present - and into the troubled psyche of someone who may have exacted retribution for the most unspeakable crime of all.
In A Place of Hiding,,best-selling novelist Elizabeth George marks new territory in the darker landscapes of human relationships. She tells a gripping, suspenseful story of betrayal and devotion, war and remembrance, love and loss...and the higher truths to which we must all ultimately answer.

    never again
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I vowed I'd never read/listen to another E. George novel unless it was abridged. Now I vow I will never read/listen to another abridged or not. Lame plot, cliche after cliche, no character development.
What could Elizabeth George have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Not written it.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Simon Jones?
The narration couldn't save it or make it any worse.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    disappointment
    Dissappinted
I don't think this book should be included in the Inspector Lynley series. An offshoot or side story yes, but not in the series. Also, I felt that the abridged version made it seem even more lacking in plot and the transitions were difficult to follow. In addition there were at least two characters who were supposed to be American and the American accent was poor and sloppy.
One of my most favorite authors!
I enjoyed the book very much. Her writing feels like an old friend!
I've read all of her fiction books.

For the next 10 years Kate grows up alone in Haiti, one of the most dangerous and poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Not a day goes by that she doesn't think of her father. Kate pushes herself to become stronger, mentally and physically. Every day is a struggle for survival. And yet she lives for only one reason ... revenge.
While looking for a drug lord via satellite in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, Jack Coffey, rookie FBI agent, spots Kate Huntley. She looks fragile and innocent, but every time he turns around she's putting another thug in his place.
In the beginning Jack wonders if Kate's distrust of his superiors is warranted or just simple paranoia. In the end, Jack realizes nothing is as it seems.
    Members Reviews:
Good grief.. I'll READ the book..
Terrible, terrible narration! When Kate was on the boat with her father, who had been stabbed and was dying whatever he said was said in a normal tone, no painful sounds, no nothing. When Jack had been shot and had been unconscious for 2 days when he woke up his speech was perfectly normal, bright and cheery. Really? No raspy voice, no nothing. Unbelievable! There was no emotions at all from this narrator and the mens voices were a little too feminine for me. This narrator didnt even try. All she did was read the book. If even 1 of the people who rated this book would have actually reviewed it honestly I would never have bought it. I gave 3 stars to Overall and Story to be fair to the author since I'm not going to finish listening to it.
I would like to say that the description tells us what the book is about or we can zip over to Amazon and look at reviews. This is AUDIBLE! What we need to review is the narrator. Does he or she suck? Why? Is he or she too nasal-y, too sweet for the kind of book he or she is reading, to gruff, too bland, too robotic, lacks emotion. Is he or she doing nothing but reading the book? Not changing his or her voice for the male and female voices? Is the narrator sounding the same whether she or he is reading a whisper spoken?
Most of us on AUDIBLE don't really care what the book is about. We want to know about the narrator!
    Unrealistic plot, with poor narration
Hmmmm. Why is it that when I post a five star review on Audible it appears instantly, but when I post a negative review it frequently just disappears??? I will try again:
I agree with another reviewer that the narration here was not good. The narrator just reads the book without any dramatisation and it does detract a lot from the quality of the story.
The actual plot line in this book starts really well and the first half is excellent - fast paced action with interesting H and h. Unfortunately the central characters lose all common sense and fail to notice who the "bad guy" was which was blindingly obvious to even the most obtuse listener.
The ending was unrealistic and implausible.

Better than I expected! Close to a 5
After reading some of the less flattering reviews I wasn't sure what I would get- but it was much better than the reviews led me to expect. I thought Maeve was a great new character and I've already purchased the next book in the series. some people criticized the narrator and that baffles me as well - I thought the narrator did a great job and I had no trouble following different characters. Though I'm often not a fan of switching points of view in this book I thought it worked well. I'm tempted to give it 5 stars just to raise the overall average. if there was something in between 4 and 5 star rating that's where I would put it. Couldn't stop listening. A great find in my opinion!
Glad I listened to this one last
I'm really glad that I listened to this book in the Maeve Kerrigan series last because had I listened to it first, I don't think I would have listened to the other books in this series, which are VERY good.
I found Louise to be very annoying in this book and the last hour of the book which is mostly a letter from Louise simply needed to finish!
I don't think this book is critical to Maeve Kerrigan series if you are interested in reading or listening to these books. All of the other books in the series are much better and maybe that is because of the interaction of Josh Derwent. He's a bugger and I love him! He adds to the story.
What is Better than Book 1 in a Series You Like ??
Jane Casey has done something difficult. . .successfully created a character who follows in the footsteps of Jane Tennison (Prime Suspect) and Anna Travis while establishing her own identity. The plots are clever, the dialogue smart and the narration superb. If you enjoy British police procedurals this is a wonderful series !
    Engrossing: well-written and well-read
I really enjoyed this book; it was predictable in terms of the culprit, but the structure of the book with changing narrators worked well in creating a suspenseful denouement and strong character creation. The narrator is excellent. Can't wait for the next in the series!
    Disappointing
What aspect of Sarah Coomess performance would you have changed?
It must really be a challenge to distinguish so many English accents as well as the different ages and characters of everyone in this book. Coombes makes a brave job of it, but some character's voices sound cartoonish, sometimes it's hard to tell who's speaking in a conversation where both voices sound quite similar. There are also times when the character is thinking the words, but it's hard to understand that except in retrospect.
Did The Burning inspire you to do anything?
    This is a ridiculous question.
    Any additional comments?
There are some interesting characters and events, and I did listen all the way through. The romantic relationships are incompletely drawn.

In his first case as lead investigator with London's crack murder squad, Detective Jack Caffery is called on to investigate the murder of a young woman whose body has been discovered near the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, southeast London. Brutalized, and mutilated beyond recognition, the victim is soon joined by four others discovered in the same area - all female and all ritualistically murdered. Members Reviews:
Graphic, that seemed a little gratuitous.
The story was great... that said I felt it was too bogged down by the detailed barbarities. I don't expect an author to sugar coat things. I fully understand the need to convey concepts that are unimaginable, even disturbing. However, scenes of violence and inhumanity, much like scenes of sex can easily cross over from being descriptive to unnecessarily explicit, vulgar.
I did enjoy the story, it was not predictable or implausable. Although another reviewer remarked on the cliche of prostitutes and drug addicts, this is an unfortunate statistical fact. It was a good listen overall, but buyer beware.
Okay, so Damien Goodwin's sometime's hard to understand
Black is a color, darkness is color's absence. Hayder comes very close to black. Certainly she goes places where the the fog makes you really uncomfortable even in mid day. Unfortunately Damien Goodwin isn't alway's the best guide through the murk since his various voices are often too British authentic for my American ears. Sometimes I wished that this Audio Book had subtitles.
Regardless, the book's bumps of dark patches and Goodwin's garbles don't overcome the way Hayder writes. If your ears can navigate Goodwin's regionalisms... and a trip through some very dark scenes... Well, enjoy.
    A darn good read!
This is the first audio book that I have enjoyed completely. A huge reason in my positive appraisal of this book, is due to the narrator. Super job! Do note that this story is Not for the squeemish! The actions of the killer are detailed and graphic.
    Creepy, but good
This is a very gross story, but it is very well done and you definitely get caught up in Jack Caffrey, the main police character. For whatever reason, I tend to like this stuff, but I definitely would not recommend it for the faint of heart.
    GREAT READ
Just the right pace to keep you reading. Every character seems alive. Makes your stomach churn at the right moments. Really tight, short chapters. The crimes are pretty grisly, but Jack Caffery is pretty intriguing and the mystery is good. I'm definitely into this series for the long haul.

    Publisher's Summary:
Cayce Pollard is an expensive, spookily intuitive market-research consultant. In London on a job, she is offered a secret assignment: to investigate some intriguing snippets of video that have been appearing on the Internet.
An entire subculture of people is obsessed with these bits of footage, and anybody who can create that kind of brand loyalty would be a gold mine for Cayce's client. But when her borrowed apartment is burgled and her computer hacked, she realizes there's more to this project than she had expected.
    Members Reviews:
    Horrible narrator.
Narrator absolutely ruined the story for me. She delivered a flat, droning rendition lowlit by jarringly amateurish accents. Wasted my credit.
    occasional pronunciation clangers
While not one of Gibson's greatest this is one of my favorites in spite of its flaws.
The narrator was very good with the strange exception of Americans to refuse to learn how English names and places are pronounced. Mainwaring and Bournemouth are not so obscure that a few minutes research would fail to produce guidance on how to say them in a way that is not cringe producing and embarrassing for a person and a company that makes its living from the spoken word.
    Interesting and very unique
Would you consider the audio edition of Pattern Recognition to be better than the print version?
I do not have a physical copy but Shelly Frasier has an outstanding performance.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Pattern Recognition?
I really enjoyed the final act. When you start to see the full picture and the character arc that has been happening this whole time smacks you in the face.
Have you listened to any of Shelly Frasiers other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not, but now intend to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    It made me think.
    Any additional comments?
Great book. Very unique but also very Gibson. I will need to re-listen or read. I was so caught up in the mystery that I didn't fully understand the story was about Cayce until it was almost over.
Dreadful ... as it lacks a (compelling) story
What would have made Pattern Recognition better?
I am a keen listener to audiobooks, maybe 70 so far! This sounded OK in the review but having listened to the first 3 hours I am having to return it. Just left me completely cold. Couldn't get into the non existent story.
What could William Gibson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    a more compelling story
A non - sci-if mystery very well read.
I chose this book on the basis of liking sci-fi and knowing Neuromancer. It has nothing to do with such works. It's a perfectly good story with plenty mystery. Lots of difficulties in the plot are smoothed over by having the main protagonist work for a company that can arrange anything. The ending was a bit deus ex machina for my liking, but maybe I'm being slightly unfair to Gibson. I now discover that it's part of a series; I shall look into that in case things improve in other volumes.
Shelley Frasier does an excellent job with the narration, using accents quite a bit, but not resorting to a gruff voice for the male characters. She is a definite plus. A good narrator can't make up for weaknesses in a story, but can make the best of what is there. Frasier surely does that.

A wealthy old man laid up in the hospital is desperate to understand the last months of his daughter's life before she was killed in a car crash in Mexico. It was puzzling. She'd cleaned out her considerable bank account, left Miami and hadn't been heard from again.
Travis McGee ventures into the steep hills and strange backwoods of Oaxaca through a bizarre world of dropouts, drug freaks, and kinky rich people - and begins to suspect the beautiful girl's death was no accident.

    Mexico, Hippies and Murder
Travis and Meyer are in Mexico at the behest of a disabled businessman that Meyer knows in passing. They're mission; and they've decided to accept it, is to travel to Oaxaca and find out how things were for the man's dead daughter in the last year of her life. What they find is two men and two women being controlled and manipulated by a predator. One of those women is the man's daughter. The story of their time in Mexico is nothing that they can tell her father; so what to do? while they're attempting to discern their purpose Travis is used as a sex toy by an eccentric English woman. They make a local friend; one Enelio Fuentes who helps them with local matters and introduces them to a couple of beautiful sisters who are secretaries in one of Fuentes' family businesses in Guadalajara.
There is also a gay man named Bruce Bundy involved. MacDonald had a tolerant attitude towards gay men at least for the era but his extreme bias against lesbians; revealed in The Quick Red Fox is again on display in this work. Though it is done a great deal more subtly in this book than it was in that one it is still there. Despite the limitations inherent in a book created 45 years ago in a culture that is radically different the work stands up fairly well. As always where this author is concerned the plot, the characters and the pace of the book are all well done.
A creepy view of the 1970s "Drug Culture"
In the early 70s I thought I was a hippie, but not like these folks. Perhaps there had to be some like these to supply the drugs that seemed to be everywhere at the time, but thank God I never met any. (That I know of!) I really enjoyed the vision of Mexico at the time though. It seems so strange to hear now that the "Mexican peso was rock-solid" and that American investors were lining up to invest in Mexico. This has to be one of my favorte Travis McGee adventures.
    The performance makes this series.
Travis McGee comes to life through the performance and isn't the same without the voice of Robert Petkoff.
An unusual story, sad and too close to reality.
Awesome story. Petkoff does an excellent job!
What made the experience of listening to Dress Her in Indigo the most enjoyable?
Great story and characters. And, Petkoff's ability to carry the dialog in the various accents
    A particularly good one
One of the better-plotted stories, and a great setting in Oaxaca. Meyer is there throughout, which always gives good balance. Some unnecessarily sordid notes and some non-PC stances, of course, but all in all a good one. Fantastic voice performance, complete with Mexican, French and Midwestern accents.
